• Suppressing "Could not change permissions" message after copying a file to NTFS Partition in Linux

  If I try to copy a file onto a NTFS partition in Linux, I get a warning message Could not change permissions for <file-name>. Is there any way to suppress this message ? I can live with this message while I copy the files in terminal, but when transferring from Dolphin a modal dialog box is shown and it gets pretty irritating. I'm using openSUSE 11.2, on KDE 4.4 RC.

• OSX's built-in VNC server disconnects me randomly, but frequently

  I've been using OSX's VNC service to connect remotely from a Windows XP box, via TightVNC. Everything seems to work normally, except that frequently - anywhere from ten seconds to ten minutes - the connection locks up entirely, without any sort of error message. The only solution is to reconnect and wait for it to lock up again. How can this be fixed permanently?

• BES 5.0 SSL Certificate

  I have recently installed BES 5.0 on a Hyper-V (i know it's not officially supported) 64-bit Server 2008 box with a remote SQL 2005 database. I successfully installed and was able to access the Blackberry Administration Service but was getting untrusted certificate errors so I followed the documentation for importing CA and BAS certificates with the Java keytool. They imported successfully but now the BAS webpage shows a "page cannot be displayed" error. TSupport is no help at all. Any ideas?

• Moving Server to new Hardware - SBS 2008

  Hi, We have very quickly out-grown our Small Business Server 2008 current hardware and have decided to purchase a complete new server. What is the best and easiest way to move the server to new hardware? It is one complete box, we do not have any SAN's or any complicated setup. We do have a couple of SQL databases running on the server and we also use Exchange. I'm sure there must be some easy way to move everything :-)

• Chmod 644 on /etc/ any way to fix?

  I tried to tab complete something and I guess it wasnt there. I know you are not supposed to set the permissions to /etc/ like that, but my permissions seem to be all messed up. whoami prints out cannot find name for user ID 1002 and I cannot cd into /etc/ anymore. passwd and shadow use 640 and 644 so I am not sure why this is a problem. Regardless, is there any way to fix this? • !! 0xc01a00d !! aka Vista won't boot

  Answer: Parts of the hard drive are corrupted. All of my user's code was checked in, so I'm just going to format the box. One of my users has an HP DV5-1235dx laptop running Windows Vista Professional x64. Last night, our WSUS server pushed out a few updates including "Security Update for Windows Vista for x64-based Systems (KB960859)". When we try to boot the laptop today, a black screen with white text comes up displaying: xxx/169894 (something) Where xxx increments rapidly and something is some dll or registry key. Eventually that stops and the screen displays !! 0xc01a00d !! 35566/169894 (\Registry\Machine\COMPONENTS\DerivedDat...) No other computers that received this update are displaying the same error. So far I've tried running CHKDSK off of HBCD. It repaired a thing or two, but the computer still doesn't boot. I tried repairing the Windows install from the Vista CD, but I get a black screen with white text displaying something along the lines of: 0 No Emulation System Type 00 1 No Emulation System Type 00 Select one of the above Booting in Last Known Good Configuration doesn't work. Booting in Safe Mode freezes at Loading Windows Files [snip] Loaded: \windows\system32\drivers\crcdisk.sys Please wait... My next step is trying to boot Safe Mode with Command Prompt and try to run rstrui.exe. While I do that, does anybody have any guidance? Edit: Booting into Safe Mode with Command Prompt will not work. See Booting in Safe Mode above. Edit 2: I managed to boot from the Vista DVD. I ran the system repair, and now I get a black screen with white text saying: !! 0xc0000034 !! 290/169894 (_0000000000000000.cdf-ms) Edit 3: I ran the system repair again, and it attempted to repair my hard drive. It failed.   Hello I have a MacPro that I'm using as a local file server. I mapped a directory on the secondary hard drive of the MacPro as a drive on our local Windows box. It worked fine for about a week and then suddenly stopped working. The windows computer gives the error that it's an invalid username and password however I have checked and double checked to ensure that the user and pass are correct to no avail. Anyone have any ideas on what's going on here?

I have run "sfc", no problems. There are no Device Errors in Device Manager. I have also run "vssadmin list writers", no problems. Whats going on??? Would it be a good idea to re-install Windows 7?

• "Integrated" VMs (As opposed to "Sandboxed")

  It is common for virtual machines to be sandboxes, their interaction with the host OS being limited to the absolutely necessary. Are there any projects that would try to integrate VMs (specifically Virtual Box) with their host OS (specifically Ubuntu on Windows host, but I'd be curious of other combinations as well)? Things like opening all files with a certain extension in either the host or the guest. Possibly other nice things I haven't thought of.

• extension shortcuts in chrome dont have text in them, windows 7

  I have a few extensions next to my URL bar in chrome on windows 7. When I press any of them, or even the bookmark star, the text box that pops up is clear. I am using the following extensions: ablock plus, googleTranslate, firebugLite, ghostery, avastWebRep, Ultimate UserAgent switcher, Web developer toolbar, desprotetor de links, DNT plus, and WOT. I am set to block popups but not javascript in chrome and have a blackout theme installed. any ideas?

I've run the following command: sudo aptitude install imagemagick Now whenever I try to run 'display' from the command line, I get an error saying display: delegate library support not built-in `' (X11) @ display.c/DisplayImageCommand/1888. • My EliteBook is not auto picking 1080p for external monitor, poor display on forcing

  I'm connecting my Samsung LED S22A300B to my HP EliteBook 6930p through VGA out. Laptop has Intel 4500MHD video card. I have latest drivers installed for both card and monitor. Only 800x600 and 1024x768 are shown. A lot of other people get this problem when they use it with docking station as discussed here. But I am not using any docking station. The monitor works great with my desktop though. As advised on the aforementioned page, one of the things I tried was to force the resolution using Intel's "custom resolution" feature. I installed PowerStrip on my desktop and copied advanced timing values(front/back porch,sync width, etc.) from there and then used the same values while defining a custom resolution in my laptop's Intel graphics utility. As a result, I got the 1080p resolution but the display is poor. Text has some weird colored shadow and sometimes on images too. What should I do?

(I could forward the mail to another mail service that does, but I'd like to try a proxy) Is there some simple software that could be run on a linux box to allow secure SSL POP3/SMTP connections to it, and transparently proxy/connect to the ISP email servers? This is to allow wireless mobile devices more secure access their email without needing the full vpn.

  Sorry that I can't be very specific, only symtoms are provided: Monday morning a CentOS box, 1GB ram, Pentium 4 web server (thin, rails) does not response (too slow) to a browser of another PC ping it, ok ssh into it, ok a few minutes later, the web server is back to normal speed, serving web requests well ping it, ok ssh into it, ok however, top does not run what should I look at, about this 'top does not run' symptom? thx

• Pages '09 reverts to a specific printer after choosing "Any Printer"

  When I select Any Printer in the Format For: drop down box for a Pages '09 document, the next time I reopen the document it reverts to formatting for the specific printer that was originally selected. Why isn't the Format For: selection persistent? I know for certain that this problem exists on documents that I originally created in an earlier version of Pages. I have not yet confirmed if it also happens in documents originally created in Pages '09.

• having trouble with bog standard openldap server db

  I am having trouble getting an "out of the box" openldap server working. The examples on the openldap site stiull refer to the slapd.conf file, but the install does not make that. if I start the server (service slapd start) I do not get any errors, but cannot connect ldap_sasl_bind(SIMPLE): Can't contact LDAP server (-1) anyone have a simple howto for v2.4 ? I am on fedora15, installed openldap-servers and clients via yum. I have phpldapadmin installed that I can try and connect with once I can get the command line working
