• Ubuntu crashes with menu bar launcher freeze during software centre use

  I recently reinstalled Ubuntu 12.04 LTS on a Dell Studio 1588 64-bit and ran into crashes as I was installing some software on the software centre. Before this, I had display/screen problems that I needed to fix so I will briefly describe that in case it has any connection to the crashes. The problem was of screen crash/flickering (related to ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5400x) when trying to adjust brightness and so I followed guidance from an earlier chain (question 131967) to (a) use jockey to install fglrx update driver (deactivate experimental beta driver) and (b) edit grub to add acpi_backlight=vendor dell_laptop.backlight=0 The crashes that happened (twice, while software centre was just finishing installation in the background) was that all tabs (on open Firefox window) stayed open along with cursor control with mousepad but all menu bars disappeared completely along with the launcher and the keyboard also turned unresponsive. So there seemed to be no way to close windows or shut down the computer except for a forced hard shut down of the system using the start button. This is very similar to Questions #167540 and #298843, which seem to be closed. Why is this happening? Is there some update or fix I need to make? Thanks!

• Picking a suitable resolution for a modern low-res game?

  I'm working on a 2D game project right now (using SFML+OpenGL and C++) and I'm trying to figure out how to go about choosing a resolution. I want my game to have a pixel resolution that is around that of classic '16bit' era consoles like the Super Nintendo or Neo Geo. However, I'd also like to have my game fit the 16:9 aspect ratio that most modern PC monitors use. Finally I'd like to be able to include an option for running full screen. I know that I could create my own low-res 16:9 resolution that is more-or-less around the size of SNES or NeoGeo games. However, the problem seems to be that doing so would leave me with a non-standard resolution that my monitor would not be able to support in fullscreen mode. For example, if i divide the common 16:9 resolution 1920x1080 by 4, I would get a 16:9 resolution that is relatively close to the resolution used by 16bit era games; 480x270. That would be fine in a windowed mode, but I don't think that it would be supported in fullscreen mode. How can I choose a resolution that suits my needs? Can I use something like 480x270? If so, how would I go about getting fullscreen mode to work with such a non-standard resolution? (I'm guessing OpenGL/SFML might have a way of up-scaling...but..)

• How to turn off screen (DPMS) together with locking session in KDE?

  First of all, I'm aware a similar question for GNOME is asked here: "Switch off laptop backlight when locking screen". Objective I would like to turn off my screen on locking the session for power saving reasons. Actual problem Locking the screen on Kubuntu (KDE) inevitably triggers the screensaver as far as I can see. There's no screensaver option other than 'Blank screen' together with its background colour set to black that comes just close to my goal. It blanks the screen, but doesn't turn off the screen. Screen's backlight will still be on and not saving any power. Current workaround A workaround via a script + shortcut key is possible, however, it's just a workaround since it doesn't trigger on all ways to lock the session. Therefore, I think it should be possible to have it done more elegantly, for example by providing this option in KDE's configuration dialog of the screensaver. The workaround I am now using is the following. A script that locks the screen and turns off the screen: #!/bin/bash qdbus org.freedesktop.ScreenSaver /ScreenSaver Lock xset dpms force standby and let it run with a shortcut key via a custom menu entry. It works. Here's why I consider it to be a workaround rather than a solution. It doesn't work for other ways to trigger the locking of the session. My actual question(s) Do I need to touching/patching KDE's source? If not what are my options? If so, could someone point me to where I can get started? what do you think is the recommended place in the GUI for configuration? I'm using Kubuntu 12.04 and willing to upgrade to KDE 4.9 or waiting for the 12.10 release.

• M-Audio Delta starts up at wrong sample rate

  When the PC starts my M-Audio Delta 66 is using 48000kHz sampling rate when it is set for 44100 in Envy24. This causes audio to play slower than it should. This is in Kubuntu 14.04 on my new PC using an AMD A8 6500 with 8GB. When I first installed it seemed okay, but at some point it went wrong and has been doing this consistently since then. Kernel is 3.13.0-24-generic #47-Ubuntu SMP Fri May 2 23:31:42 UTC 2014 i686 athlon i686 GNU/Linux steve@slarti:~$ cat /proc/asound/card2/pcm0p/sub0/hw_params access: MMAP_INTERLEAVED format: S32_LE subformat: STD channels: 10 rate: 48000 (48000/1) period_size: 441 buffer_size: 3528 I can get it to switch to 44100 if I disable/enable the Delta in Pulseaudio volume control, but I have to do this every day and the sound still seems distorted. I can't see any issues in any of the config or log files I can find. If I boot the PC with a Mint Live USB it starts at 44100 and sound fine. Originally reported on Youtube is playing at the wrong speed - maybe soundcard related, but I'll close that and have this more relevant question instead.

• Windows 8 and Cisco AnyConnect client issue

  As many of us are doing these days, I have fully moved to Windows 8 on my PCs (laptops and desktops).  And in my role as a consultant I work with many clients, many of them use different vpn technologies.  While pretty much every single vpn client I had installed needed a trick or two to work, well Cisco’s AnyConnect vpn client had some issues.  Installation went well, no problem there.  The problem appeared when I attempted to connect, as I received the following message: Pretty clear what the issue is, right? right??!!?? Doing a bit of research (Google knows!), I cam across the following fix: Using our new favorite shortcut:  Windows Key + X Then Run > regedit. We then Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\vpnva From the image you can tell there are additional characters in the DisplayName that interfere with the device being able to be correctly identified. This is what it looks like originally. We will remove those characters so it looks more like: Close all open windows and attempt your connection.

• External display resolution issue

  I'm new to Ubuntu. I've 'dabbled' in the past but Windows was annoying me too much so I finally made the change. One thing I use my laptop for is outputting the screen onto an external monitor. In Windows this usually works fine (but when there is an issue, it's a pain to resolve and has crashed my computer on many occasions). In Ubuntu it's a very simple case of "plug and play" because it displays the content immediately with no major problems. However, I can only alter the resolution of the external display to 4:3 formats, whereas the external monitor is 16:9, so the picture is stretched. In Windows there's loads of resolutions to choose from. If I disable the laptop's screen, it still doesn't allow me to display the correct resolution externally (on VGA). Further to that, if I close the laptop it keeps the external screen as it is, but when I reopen the laptop, the laptop screen doesn't turn back on until I restart. If it's a video I am watching, I can use VLC to alter the aspect ratio so the video looks fine, but it's quite an annoying work around. I used terminal to find my graphics controller, which is "Intel Corporation Mobile 4 Series Chipset Integrated Graphics Controller [8086:2a42] (rev 07)" (not great, I know... the laptop was a free gift with my mobile!) Any idea of how I can get the resolution on the external monitor to be correct?

• accessing live usb files from new hd ubuntu install

  After my live USB (ubuntu 12.04 lts) refused to boot, I proceeded to install the same Ubuntu version on the laptop hard drive (a dual boot next to Win xp). This all went well without a hitch. Previous to this, I spent several weeks enjoying and exploring ubuntu from the usb pendrive. During this time I changed lots of settings and customized Firefox and more. Now, I'd like to import the home folder from the usb drive into the new install home folder on the hard disk, which is the purported folder that holds all those special settings to my knowledge. Unfortunately and only being familiar with Windows file systems, the view of the usb file system from the new hdd install is totally perplexing. I can't find anything that looks anywhere close to the original file system. More, I can't find any of the files I had created and stored there, like the LibreOfficeCalc file that has all my passwords (this one is really discouraging) that was stored on the ubuntu desktop. Help me find this file alone and I'll bow down with full apologies to any and all computer gods. Being able to import all those customizing settings into the new install would be a major bonus also, but hey, I'm not greedy. I'll take the passwords file and be happy! And humble! I would be very grateful for some clear, understandable help on this. Thanks

• StyleCop Custom Rules

I’ve found a few useful things to point out: Debugging is difficult, but here are the steps (thanks to Tintin’s answer). “One way: 1) Delete your custom rules 2) Open Visual Studio (for dev), open your custom rule solution 3) Build & Deploy custom rules (a PostBuild action to copy the rules into the StyleCop folder is handy) 4) Open Visual Studio (for test) 5) Use VS (dev) and Attach to process devenv.exe (the test VS instance), set breakpoints in the rules you want to debug 6) Use VS’ (test) and right-click on project, Run StyleCop 7) Debug” ~ it worked once, now I’m having problems getting it to work again ~ I also get the message “Cannot evaluate expression because the code of the current method is optimized.” when I try to look at properties. Looking at the source code of the StyleCop.CSharp.Rules.dll that comes with the install. I used JustDecompile from Telerik. Create one xml file and name it the same as the one cs file (CodingGuildelineRules.cs and CodingGuidelinRules.xml) Deploy: 1. Build in Visual Studio 2. Close Visual Studio (Style cop is running so you can’t override your dll without closing) 3. Copy the dll from the bin to the C: \Program Files (x86)\StyleCop 4.7\ 4. • Basic is Best

  Fellow foodies will recognize the recent movement towards "farm-to-table" restaurants. These venues attempt to simplify their menus and source ingredients as close to the source as possible. I had the opportunity to dine at such a restaurant the other evening. I was gushing about the appetizer to my server when she described the preparation for the item and then punctuated her comments with "basic is best". I reminded my fellow enterprise architect diners there was an architecture lesson in that statement. They rolled their eyes and chuckled. But they also knew I was right. I'm reminded of Frederick Brooks' book The Mythical Man Month and his latest The Design of Design. The former must read book talks about complexity. But he refrains from damning all complexity. The world we live in and enterprises we strive to transform with enterprise architecture are complicated organisms, much like the human body. But sometimes a simple solution is the best approach. Fewer applications (think: portfolio rationalization). Fewer components. Fewer lines of code. Whatever level of abstraction you are working at, less is more. I'm reminded of the enterprise architecture principle "Control Technical Diversity". At one firm I created pithy catch phrases for each principles. I named this one "Less is More". But perhaps another variation is what my server said the other night, "Basic is Best".

• Calculate travel time on road map with semaphores

  I have a road map with intersections. At intersections there are semaphores. For each semaphore I generate a red light time and green light time which are represented with syntax [R:T1, G:T2], for example: 119 185 250 A ------- B: [R:6, G:4] ------ C: [R:5, G:5] ------ D I want to calculate a car travel time from A - D. Now I do this with this pseudo code: function get_travel_time(semaphores_configuration) { time = 0; for( i=1; i<path.length;i++) { prev_node = path[i-1]; next_node = path[i]); cost = cost_between(prev_node, next_node) time += (cost/movement_speed) // movement_speed = 50px per second light_times = get_light_times(path[i], semaphore_configurations) lights_cycle = get_lights_cycle(light_times) // Eg: [R,R,R,G,G,G,G], where [R:3, G:4] lights_sum = light_times.green_time+light_times.red_light; // Lights cycle time light = lights_cycle[cost%lights_sum]; if( light == "R" ) { time += light_times.red_light; } } return time; } So for distance 119 between A and B travel time is, 119/50 = 2.38s ( exactly mesaured time is between 2.5s and 2.6s), then we add time if we came at a red light when at B. • Precise: Evolution laggy due to IMAP -profile or due to some odd Sync -issue?

  I'm fighting with Evolution. Basically it's working fine -- but it is very slow to react in certain situations. There is apparently some problem with syncing and IMAP. Helper questios Could be that changing away from Bonobo has to do with slowing-down? There might be some trouble with the new engine and "asynchronous actions". What to do about it? I want to get the previous "working mood" back. How can I speed this thing up? Different scenarios when sending a mail, the composer window hangs there inactive for a couple of seconds, everything grayed out. Though there is a green check mark saying it's sent, I'm not sure a) why it's still blocking everything and b) whether I could simply close it without "breaking"/"losing" anything. In earlier versions, the composer window was closing pretty fast, and one could see the message being stored into the local "outbox" until it was sent, and one could immediately continue with the next task. I prefer that behaviour over the current. switching between modules. Coming from mail and switching to the address book takes a couple of seconds. Same for switching to the calendar. I read about different "possible causes" and tried a few things: I only have 3 local address books, so no networking should be involved here. To make sure, I switched to offline mode and then tried to access the address book. No noticeable difference. I use 3 Google Calendars. Switching to offline mode made a minor difference, but so minor that it also could be "imagination" since one might have expected this in this case according to some reports, disabling the tasks should help. Well, it didn't in my case, as I don't use them regularly (just two local items stored here)

• Oracle OpenWorld Highlights

  We are in the final days of Oracle OpenWorld 2012 and the data integration team have been hard at work giving sessions, meeting customers, demonstrating product and conducting hands-on labs.    It has been a great conference, but the best part is meeting our customers and learning about all the great implementations of our products.  Wednesday was the last day that the exhibition hall was open and attendees were getting in their final opportunities to see our products and meet with the product management team.   Two hours before the close of the hall, people lined up to learn about GoldenGate 11gR2, Monitor, Adapters, Veridata, and all the different use cases.    Here's a picture of Sjaak Vossepoel, who is our DIS Sales Consulting Manager for EMEA speaking to a potential customer on the options of using Oracle GoldenGate for heterogenous data replication.  Over the last two days, the GoldenGate team ran two labs; Introduction to Oracle GoldenGate Veridata and Deep Dive into Oracle GoldenGate.   Both of the labs were completely booked out and unfortunately we had to turn away people.   BUT,  all of our labs were recorded recently so if you were not able to get into the lab or did not have enough time to complete your labs, visit youtube.com/oraclegoldengate to see a  complete recording of the labs we used at OpenWorld plus more.  Here are a couple pictures from the Deep Dive into Oracle GoldenGate lead by Chis Lawless from the Product Management team.   Thanks to the GoldenGate Hands-on Lab team for putting on a great session!!! • Which Language Next? Python? Ruby? [closed]

  I am a beginning Webmaster (relatively), with 2+ years of php experience. I also have some java training and a bit of .net. My company is now close to redeveloping the website that I work on, which is coded primarily in php, but has some poorly-written .net in part as well (it's confusing and ill-planned, but I didn't make any of those decisions. Can anyone say action-oriented .net and JScript?). So, I'm trying to decide which language I should learn next to quickly develop a new site. I will probably just redevelop it at first in php because I'm very comfortable with it. However, I'd like to migrate in the next year to something newer and more forward-thinking. This being said, .net is out of the question a little bit. We need cheap developers who are fast and can get pages up quickly. In this part of the country, part-time .net developers are hard to find. So, we need something that will be pretty standard in the next few years, but we have some .net SOAP 1.1 APIs that we use on our actual service (separate from the corporate website), that we will need to integrate part of the site with. Developing with php and SOAP is much more difficult than doing the same thing. So, I may have to develop the API collaborative part in .net just to be easy, and then I'd like to use something else that is fast, flexible, forward thinking, and will be relatively standard and easy to find developers for. So, any ideas? Python and Django? Ruby on Rails? Another framework? Thanks for your thoughts. Sorry, I know this was long, but it's all very convoluted and confusing so I needed to be slightly long-winded.

• How to implement "bullet time" in a multiplayer game?

  I have never seen such a feature before, but it should provide an interesting gameplay opportunity. So yes, in a multiplayer/real-time environment (imagine FPS), how could I implement a slow motion/bullet time effect? Something like an illusion for the player that's currently slo-mo'ed. So everybody sees him "real-time", but he sees everything slowed down. Update A sidenote: keep in mind that a FPS game has to be balanced in order for it to be fun. So yes, this bullet time feature has to be solid, giving a small advantage to the "player", while not taking away from other players. Plus, there is a possibility that two players could activate their bullet time at the same time. Furthermore: I'm going to implement this in the future no matter what it takes. And, the idea is to build a whole new game engine for all this. If that gives new options, I'm more then interested in hearing the ideas. Meanwhile, here with my team we're thinking about this too, when our theory will be crafted, I'm going to share it here. Is this even possible? So, the question on "is this even possible" has been answered, now it's time to find the best solution. I'm keeping the "answer" until something exceptionally good comes up, like a prototype theory with something close to working pseudo code.

It would be better to finesse the specific target OSD notification to cancel, by using org.freedesktop.Notifications.CloseNotification(uint id). Is there an interface method that can put this on (in?) the DBus to fire when a particular notify event occurs? The method will need to get the notify PID to use as the argument for CloseNotification(uint id). Alternatively, qdbus org.freedesktop.Notifications \ /org/freedesktop/Notifications \ org.freedesktop.Notifications.CloseNotification(uint id) could be used from the shell, if the (uint id) argument could be determined. The actual command syntax would use an integer in place of (uint id). Perhaps a better question to ask first might be "How is the DBus address for a notification found?". In hindsight the previous question "How is the (uint id) for a notification found?" is rhetorical! • JavaOne Countdown, Are you ready?

  This is a great time of the year!  Not only does the weather start cooling down a bit, but it's time to get ready for JavaOne 2012.  It feels so long since my last JavaOne (last year I missed it because I was on a mom duty), so this year I couldn't be happier to be this close to the action again.  Have you ever been at JavaOne?  There are a million great reasons to love JavaOne, and the most important for me is the atmosphere of the conference: The Java community is there, and Java is in the air! This year we have more than 450 sessions, and there are HOLs (Hands on labs) to get your hands dirty with code.  In addition, there will be very cool demos, an exhibition hall. and a DEMOground.  During the whole time, you will have the opportunity to interact with the speakers, discuss topics and concerns, and even have a drink! Oh yes, I almost forgot, there will be lots of fun even apart from the technology!  For example there will be a Geek Bike Ride, a Thirsty Bear party, and the Appreciation Party with Pearl Jam and Kings of Leon.  How can this get any better! • Outlook macro runs through 250 iterations before failing with error [migrated]

  Description: I have an Outlook macro that loops through selected emails in a folder and writes down some info to a .csv file. It works perfectly up until 250 before failing. • Tracking "To Do" Items

  One of the challenges I struggle with is keeping a good "to do" list of things I need to do on the various SQL Servers I support. I have servers that I don't visit on a regular basis so my situation may be different than many of you. Though I'm sure you all have servers that you only touch every few months. (And it's usually the accounting server!) It's difficult for me to remember what changes I made and what changes I need to make. I've tried Outlook, OneNote and various other to do list managers and haven't been happy with any of them. Many are close but just don't give me what I need. As a result I've started writing my own. It's web-based so you can use it from anywhere -- including on a server. It also knows just enough about SQL Server to help structure your to do items and your notes. It isn't agent based and doesn't do any monitoring. Think OneNote or Evernote but with some "SQL Servery" stuff built in. If you'd like to try this or take a survey I'm putting together, add your email address to my mailing list.  I should be ready in a week or so.  I'm only going to use this list for notifications about this service. I'd like to find a small group of people that feel the same pain I do and maybe we can build something interesting.

• Forking a GPL dual licensed software with business owned copyrights

  After receiving some threats of the copyrights holder of a dual licensed software(GPL2 and commercial) to buy the commercial version for projects in production, I am thinking to make a fork. In a case of GPL2 and commercially dual licensed with business owned copyrights software, is forking the GPL2 version an option? Also, is forking a good way to deal with such cases? Background information The software is a web CMS released under 2 versions a GPL2 free open source edition and a commercial edition including technical support and extra functionality. The problem is that now, basing their argumentation on the "distribution" definition of the GPL2, the company holding the copyrights argue that delivering the software and some extensions to a client is considered as a "distribution". And that such a "distribution" falls under the GPL2 obligation to release the custom made extension code. Custom made extensions are mainly designs, templates and very specific functionality. Basically they give me 3 choices: Buying the commercial licensed edition for projects based on the GPL in production, Deleting all the projects in production based on GPL2 version, Releasing all the extensions as GPL2 code. The first 2 options are nothing realistic for finished projects. The third option could be fine, but as most of the extensions are very specific, cleaning the code to make it usable by other users means lot of works and also I am not sure the clients will appreciate to have their website designs and specific functionality released publicly. The copyrights holding company even contacted some clients directly, giving them the "choice". I know that this is a very corporate interpretation of GPL2, and a such action is nothing close to legal, but as an independent developer, I don't want to take the risk to get involved in some long and tiring legal procedures. • Name of the Countdown Numbers round problem - and algorithmic solutions?

  For the non-Brits in the audience, there's a segment of a daytime game-show where contestants have a set of 6 numbers and a randomly generated target number. They have to reach the target number using any (but not necessarily all) of the 6 numbers using only arithmetic operators. All calculations must result in positive integers. An example: Youtube: Countdown - The Most Extraordinary Numbers Game Ever? A detailed description is given on Wikipedia: Countdown (Game Show) For example: The contentant selects 6 numbers - two large (possibilities include 25, 50, 75, 100) and four small (numbers 1 .. 10, each included twice in the pool). The numbers picked are 75, 50, 2, 3, 8, 7 are given with a target number of 812. One attempt is (75 + 50 - 8) * 7 - (3 * 2) = 813 (This scores 7 points for a solution within 5 of the target) An exact answer would be (50 + 8) * 7 * 2 = 812 (This would have scored 10 points exactly matching the target). Obviously this problem has existed before the advent of TV, but the Wikipedia article doesn't give it a name. I've also saw this game at a primary school I attended where the game was called "Crypto" as an inter-class competition - but searching for it now reveals nothing. I took part in it a few times and my dad wrote an Excel spreadsheet that attempted to brute-force the problem, I don't remember how it worked (only that it didn't work, what with Excel's 65535 row limit), but surely there must be an algorithmic solution for the problem. Maybe there's a solution that works the way human cognition does (e.g. in-parallel to find numbers 'close enough', then taking candidates and performing 'smaller' operations).

• VMware9 fails to launch Virtual OS. Ubuntu 12.10 64bit (Unable to change virtual machine power state: Pipe connection has been broken.)

  Another issue I need help with. I use VMware for work on Ubuntu 12.04. However for some reasons my VMware Workstation software generates the following error: Unable to change virtual machine power state: Failed to power on '/home/pst007x/vmware/Windows 7 x64/Windows 7 x64.vmx'. Transport (VMDB) error -14: Pipe connection has been broken. Product: VMware® Workstation Version: 9.0.0 build-812388 Host OS Version: 3.5.0-18-generic Ubuntu 12.10 64bit Kernel Linux 3.5.0-18-generic I have seen patches, but nothing works, and the patches are not maintained, broken links. PLEASE NOTE: I know that this has been asked, but there was no answer given that resolves this issue. Unfortunately I have changed all my office and personal PC's to Ubuntu, and use Win7 in a vm, however since 12.10, vm now fails to launch. For me this is a catastrophe, and makes Ubuntu useless for me to use! I am in a desperate situation here, is there is anyone that can offer any help I would be truly appreciative. I have looked on the VMware forums and the only solution is offered for Fedora, but the people posting there are not clear about what the solution is! thanks PLEASE DO NOT CLOSE THIS QUESTION! I have tried everywhere to find a solution, but I have come up blank... Patches referenced to in other posts do not work in this version of VMware...

• Java - Using Linear Coordinates to Check Against AI [closed]

  I'm working on some artificial intelligence, and I want my AI not to run into given coordinates as these are references of a wall/boundary. To begin with, every time my AI hits a wall, it makes a reference to that position (x,y). When it hits the same wall three times, it uses linear check points to 'imagine' there is a wall going through these coordinates. I want to now prevent my AI from going into that wall again. To detect if my coordinates make a straight line, i use: private boolean collinear(double x1, double y1, double x2, double y2, double x3, double y3) { return (y1 - y2) * (x1 - x3) == (y1 - y3) * (x1 - x2); } This returns true is the given points are linear to one another. So my problems are: How do I determine whether my robot is approaching the wall from its current trajectory? Instead of Java 'imagining' theres a line from 1, to 3. But to 'imagine' a line all the way through these linear coordinantes, until infinity (or close). I have a feeling this is going to require some confusing trigonometry?
