  • Is there an equivalent of RDP?

    The "Desktop Sharing" settings that come installed by default seem to use VNC. VNC is a bit of a bandwidth hog, can only work at the resolution of whatever screen is attached to the host, and mirrors every action on the host. (It also seems to work poorly with compositing, but maybe that's been fixed.) I know about X tunnelling, but that's annoying to use and doesn't always work properly (or, more accurately, some apps don't work properly). Is there any kind of protocol in between the two, similar to RDP used for Windows? Specifically, something that can run at a different resolution to the host screen and is a little lighter on the network? (Ideally, the more the protocol could have in common with RDP, the better.)

  • Determining whether a visitor reached two different pages in one visit

    I have a funnel that I would like to track. Tracking this funnel won't work with the default "goal funnel" tracking in Google due to the fact that I am mixing events and pageviews. As such, I've created a series of reports: Visits to demo pages - An inclusion filter on "Page". Triggers an Event on these pages - An inclusion filter on "Page" and "Event Category". Does not bounce - An inclusion filter on "Page" and an exclusion filter on "Exit Page" for these same pages. Reach our storefront - ?? Purchase something - An inclusion filter on "Page" and a report that shows "Transactions". At a basic level, I need to track users who reached demo pages, then reached any page on our store. Intuitively, I created a segment, used two inclusive "Page" filters (one for the demo pages and one for any page in our store), and combined them with an "AND" operator. I thought this was working until I tried to do the same thing in a dashboard widget and on a custom report. When I tried the same thing in those areas, I got zero results. I figured this might be because widgets and custom report filters function differently from segment filters (the options are different for all of them), so I tried applying my "demo page && store page" segment to a report that gave me a general page list. All I saw was a list of the specific pages. I tried simplifying things by creating a custom report that showed all visits to store pages, then applied a segment that filtered for users who visited demo pages. This got me the same numbers as my "demo page && store page" segment, but showed a list of demo pages. This has led me to believe that the "demo page && store page segment" approach and the "demo segment && store report" functionally behave the same. However, this experience has left me questioning whether they're giving me what I want. Are these methods showing me all users who reached both sets of pages? Is there a better/easier/more standard way of doing this aside from looking at visitor flow reports? I'm trying to avoid a combination of custom variables/events and using the horizontal funnel approach since it would consume a large number of our limited goals and seems more complicated than is necessary for tracking this funnel.

  • Need a little help with sound in a JApplet

    I am working on a solitaire game in Java, and i need to implement sound when the desk is shuffled, card flipped, etc. I used the following sites as reference to try and get it to work, but i am getting Null Pointer Exceptions or mishandled URL exception (depending on what i tweak). here Also, i am using netbeans 6.7.1 as my IDE.   • How to generate a Program template by generating an abstract class

    i have the following problem. The 1st step is to implement a program, which follows a specific protocol on startup. Therefore, functions as onInit, onConfigRequest, etc. will be necessary. (These are triggered e.g. by incoming message on a TCP Port) My goal is to generate a class for example abstract one, which has abstract functions as onInit(), etc. A programmer should just inherit from this base class and should merely override these abstract functions of the base class. The rest as of the protocol e.g. should be simply handled in the background (using the code of the base class) and should not need to appear in the programmers code. What is the correct design strategy for such tasks? and how do I deal with, that the static main method is not inheritable? What are the key-tags for this problem? (I have problem searching for a solution since I lack clear statements on this problem) Goal is to create some sort of library/class, which - included in ones code - results in executables following the protocol. EDIT (new explanation): Okay let me try to explain more detailled: In this case programs should be clients within a client server architecture. We have a client server connection via TCP/IP. Each program needs to follow a specific protocol upon program start: As soon as my program starts and gets connected to the server it will receive an Init Message (TcpClient), when this happens it should trigger the function onInit(). (Should this be implemented by an event system?) After onInit() a acknowledgement message should be sent to the server. Afterwards there are some other steps as e.g. a config message from the server which triggers an onConfig and so on. Let's concentrate on the onInit function. The idea is, that onInit (and onConfig and so on) should be the only functions the programmer should edit while the overall protocol messaging is hidden for him. Therefore, I thought using an abstract class with the abstract methods onInit(), onConfig() in it should be the right thing. The static Main class I would like to hide, since within it e.g. there will be some part which connects to the tcp port, which reacts on the Init Message and which will call the onInit function. 2 problems here: 1. the static main class cant be inherited, isn it? 2. I cannot call abstract functions from the main class in the abstract master class. Let me give an Pseudo-example for my ideas: public abstract class MasterClass { static void Main(string[] args){ 1. open TCP connection 2. waiting for Init Message from server 3. onInit(); 4. Send Acknowledgement, that Init Routine has ended successfully 5. waiting for Config message from server 6..... } public abstract void onInit(); public abstract void onConfig(); } I hope you get the idea now! The programmer should afterwards inherit from this masterclass and merely need to edit the functions onInit and so on. Is this way possible? How? What else do you recommend for solving this?   • Creating ASP.NET MVC Negotiated Content Results

    In a recent ASP.NET MVC application I’m involved with, we had a late in the process request to handle Content Negotiation: Returning output based on the HTTP Accept header of the incoming HTTP request. This is standard behavior in ASP.NET Web API but ASP.NET MVC doesn’t support this functionality directly out of the box. Another reason this came up in discussion is last week’s announcements of ASP.NET vNext, which seems to indicate that ASP.NET Web API is not going to be ported to the cloud version of vNext, but rather be replaced by a combined version of MVC and Web API. While it’s not clear what new API features will show up in this new framework, it’s pretty clear that the ASP.NET MVC style syntax will be the new standard for all the new combined HTTP processing framework. Why negotiated Content? Content negotiation is one of the key features of Web API even though it’s such a relatively simple thing. But it’s also something that’s missing in MVC and once you get used to automatically having your content returned based on Accept headers it’s hard to go back to manually having to create separate methods for different output types as you’ve had to with Microsoft server technologies all along (yes, yes I know other frameworks – including my own – have done this for years but for in the box features this is relatively new from Web API). As a quick review,  Accept Header content negotiation works off the request’s HTTP Accept header:POST http://localhost/mydailydosha/Editable/NegotiateContent HTTP/1.1 Content-Type: application/json Accept: application/json Host: localhost Content-Length: 76 Pragma: no-cache { ElementId: "header", PageName: "TestPage", Text: "This is a nice header" } If I make this request I would expect to get back a JSON result based on my application/json Accept header. To request XML  I‘d just change the accept header:Accept: text/xml and now I’d expect the response to come back as XML. Now this only works with media types that the server can process. In my case here I need to handle JSON, XML, HTML (using Views) and Plain Text. HTML results might need more than just a data return – you also probably need to specify a View to render the data into either by specifying the view explicitly or by using some sort of convention that can automatically locate a view to match. Today ASP.NET MVC doesn’t support this sort of automatic content switching out of the box. Unfortunately, in my application scenario we have an application that started out primarily with an AJAX backend that was implemented with JSON only. So there are lots of JSON results like this:[Route("Customers")] public ActionResult GetCustomers() { return Json(repo.GetCustomers(),JsonRequestBehavior.AllowGet); } These work fine, but they are of course JSON specific. Then a couple of weeks ago, a requirement came in that an old desktop application needs to also consume this API and it has to use XML to do it because there’s no JSON parser available for it. Ooops – stuck with JSON in this case. While it would have been easy to add XML specific methods I figured it’s easier to add basic content negotiation. And that’s what I show in this post. Missteps – IResultFilter, IActionFilter My first attempt at this was to use IResultFilter or IActionFilter which look like they would be ideal to modify result content after it’s been generated using OnResultExecuted() or OnActionExecuted(). Filters are great because they can look globally at all controller methods or individual methods that are marked up with the Filter’s attribute. But it turns out these filters don’t work for raw POCO result values from Action methods. What we wanted to do for API calls is get back to using plain .NET types as results rather than result actions. That is  you write a method that doesn’t return an ActionResult, but a standard .NET type like this:public Customer UpdateCustomer(Customer cust) { … do stuff to customer :-) return cust; } Unfortunately both OnResultExecuted and OnActionExecuted receive an MVC ContentResult instance from the POCO object. MVC basically takes any non-ActionResult return value and turns it into a ContentResult by converting the value using .ToString(). Ugh. The ContentResult itself doesn’t contain the original value, which is lost AFAIK with no way to retrieve it. So there’s no way to access the raw customer object in the example above. Bummer. Creating a NegotiatedResult This leaves mucking around with custom ActionResults. ActionResults are MVC’s standard way to return action method results – you basically specify that you would like to render your result in a specific format. Common ActionResults are ViewResults (ie. View(vn,model)), JsonResult, RedirectResult etc. They work and are fairly effective and work fairly well for testing as well as it’s the ‘standard’ interface to return results from actions. The problem with the this is mainly that you’re explicitly saying that you want a specific result output type. This works well for many things, but sometimes you do want your result to be negotiated. My first crack at this solution here is to create a simple ActionResult subclass that looks at the Accept header and based on that writes the output. I need to support JSON and XML content and HTML as well as text – so effectively 4 media types: application/json, text/xml, text/html and text/plain. Everything else is passed through as ContentResult – which effecively returns whatever .ToString() returns. Here’s what the NegotiatedResult usage looks like:public ActionResult GetCustomers() { return new NegotiatedResult(repo.GetCustomers()); } public ActionResult GetCustomer(int id) { return new NegotiatedResult("Show", repo.GetCustomer(id)); } There are two overloads of this method – one that returns just the raw result value and a second version that accepts an optional view name. The second version returns the Razor view specified only if text/html is requested – otherwise the raw data is returned. This is useful in applications where you have an HTML front end that can also double as an API interface endpoint that’s using the same model data you send to the View. For the application I mentioned above this was another actual use-case we needed to address so this was a welcome side effect of creating a custom ActionResult. There’s also an extension method that directly attaches a Negotiated() method to the controller using the same syntax:public ActionResult GetCustomers() { return this.Negotiated(repo.GetCustomers()); } public ActionResult GetCustomer(int id) { return this.Negotiated("Show",repo.GetCustomer(id)); } Using either of these mechanisms now allows you to return JSON, XML, HTML or plain text results depending on the Accept header sent. Send application/json you get just the Customer JSON data. Ditto for text/xml and XML data. Pass text/html for the Accept header and the "Show.cshtml" Razor view is rendered passing the result model data producing final HTML output. While this isn’t as clean as passing just POCO objects back as I had intended originally, this approach fits better with how MVC action methods are intended to be used and we get the bonus of being able to specify a View to render (optionally) for HTML. How does it work An ActionResult implementation is pretty straightforward. You inherit from ActionResult and implement the ExecuteResult method to send your output to the ASP.NET output stream. ActionFilters are an easy way to effectively do post processing on ASP.NET MVC controller actions just before the content is sent to the output stream, assuming your specific action result was used. Using XmlSerializer and JSON.NET it’s just a handful of lines each to generate serialized output directly into the HTTP output stream. Please note this implementation uses JSON.NET for its JSON generation rather than the default JavaScriptSerializer that MVC uses which I feel is an additional bonus to implementing this custom action. I’d already been using a custom JsonNetResult class previously, but now this is just rolled into this custom ActionResult. Just keep in mind that JSON.NET outputs slightly different JSON for certain things like collections for example, so behavior may change. One addition to this implementation might be a flag to allow switching the JSON serializer. Html View Generation Html View generation actually turned out to be easier than anticipated. Initially I used my generic ASP.NET ViewRenderer Class that can render MVC views from any ASP.NET application. However it turns out since we are executing inside of an active MVC request there’s an easier way: We can simply create a custom ViewResult and populate its members and then execute it. The code in text/html handling code that renders the view is simply this:response.ContentType = "text/html"; if (!string.IsNullOrEmpty(ViewName)) { var viewData = context.Controller.ViewData; viewData.Model = Data; var viewResult = new ViewResult { ViewName = ViewName, MasterName = null, ViewData = viewData, TempData = context.Controller.TempData, ViewEngineCollection = ((Controller)context.Controller).ViewEngineCollection }; viewResult.ExecuteResult(context.Controller.ControllerContext); } else response.Write(Data); which is a neat and easy way to render a Razor view assuming you have an active controller that’s ready for rendering. Sweet – dependency removed which makes this class self-contained without any external dependencies other than JSON.NET. Summary While this isn’t exactly a new topic, it’s the first time I’ve actually delved into this with MVC. I’ve been doing content negotiation with Web API and prior to that with my REST library. This is the first time it’s come up as an issue in MVC. But as I have worked through this I find that having a way to specify both HTML Views *and* JSON and XML results from a single controller certainly is appealing to me in many situations as we are in this particular application returning identical data models for each of these operations. Rendering content negotiated views is something that I hope ASP.NET vNext will provide natively in the combined MVC and WebAPI model, but we’ll see how this actually will be implemented. In the meantime having a custom ActionResult that provides this functionality is a workable and easily adaptable way of handling this going forward. Whatever ends up happening in ASP.NET vNext the abstraction can probably be changed to support the native features of the future.     When I attempt to connect to a server running XP x64 (so essentially Server 2003) using a PPTP connection, it fails with client-side error Registering your computer on the network... Error 720: A connection to the remote computer could not be established. You might need to change the network settings for this configuration. and server-side error Event ID: 20050 The user WINSERV3\Andy connected to port VPN8-1 has been disconnected because no network protocols were successfully negotiated. I have configured the router to pass both TCP packets on 1723 and GRE packets. I have used Wireshark (filtering out ARP, UDP, and all TCP ports other than 1723) to observe the packets received by the server. Wireshark does not explicitly name any protocol GRE, but it does tell me the server sent and received TCP, PPTP, PPP LCP, PPP CHAP, PPP CBCP, and PPP IPCP. The connection seems to go wrong at packet 30, where the protocol is PPP LCP, with the payload of the packet being labeled "Protocol Reject". Obviously, this is going from server to client. This would seem to lead to the conclusion that there is something wrong with my client, which runs Windows 7 Ultimate x64. However, it is able to connect to my house's router, which runs the DD-WRT firmware and is thus a PPTP endpoint. I'm thoroughly at a loss. Please help!

  • Is there a setting in Exchange Server 2007 that we can set to make these headers propogate and be received by a POP/IMAP client?

    When using EWS Managed API to send Email via Exchange Server 2007. I noticed that MAPI clients like MS Outlook display all custom headers. But when I use POP3/IMAP clients like MS Outlook Express. I have noticed that these custom headers do not display in the message opened from MS Outlook Express. Is there a setting in Exchange Server 2007 that we can set to make these custom headers propagate and be received by a POP/IMAP client? Also why do custom headers in example below display up in lower case in MAPI clients like MS Outlook? But surprisingly if we use SMTPClient class to send email then these headers display as sent with Case Sensitive letters. eg. Header.   • ssh keys rejected each day

    I've had OpenSSH server running on my debian server for a couple weeks and all of a sudden now when I go to login the next day it rejects my ssh key and I have to manually add a new one each time. Not only that but I have the "tunneling with clear-text passwords" option enabled and the non-root (login with root is disabled) account for that is rejected too. I'm at a loss why this is happening and I can't find any ssh options that would explain it. --update-- I just changed debug level to DEBUG.   • Internet slowed down because of SQUID Server setup

    Recently I have setup a squid server for our office. I have computer (A) with two ethernet cards, one for internet and the second one for local networkIt has Ubuntu server OS with squid-server and dhcp3-server installedI have added few iptable rules to work like a router and redirect all http traffic to 3128 port This link is my reference. Everything worked fine for 2 days. All of a sudden internet speed went down drastically. When I connected the internet cable to my laptop to test the internet speed it was fine. Again when I reconnected it back to computer A everything was normal. This happened 4 times in a week. Could anyone here please help me why the internet speed is going down and it becomes normal when I reconnect the cable. EDIT: Rebooting the system (computer A) didn't make a difference. I have changed iptables so that http traffic doesn't redirect to 3128 port any further, still no change in the internet speed. I think the problem is not with squid but with something else.     I have an Ubuntu 10 box that I'm trying to set up as a bandwidth-shaping router. The machine has one WAN interface, eth0 and two LAN interfaces, eth1 and eth2. NAT is configured using MASQUERADE as described at InternetConnectionSharing. I'm mostly concerned with shaping outbound traffic from the LAN interfaces -- in the end, I'd like to end up with a hard 768Kbps limit per-LAN-interface (rather than a limit on eth0 pooled across all interfaces). I installed HTB.init, and riffing on the examples, tried to set this up on eth1 by putting three files into /etc/sysconfig/htb: /etc/sysconfig/htb/eth1 DEFAULT=30 R2Q=100 /etc/sysconfig/htb/eth1-2.root RATE=768Kbps BURST=15k /etc/sysconfig/htb/eth1-2:30.dfl RATE=768Kbps CEIL=788Kbps BURST=15k LEAF=sfq I can /etc/init.d/htb start and /etc/init.d/htb stats and see information that /seems/ to suggest it's working...but when I try pulling a large file via the WAN interface the shaping clearly isn't in effect. Any suggestions?   • VPN issue: SSTP Service service started and then stopped

    When I was trying to set up a VPN connect on my laptop running Windows 7 Ultimate, I got this error: Network Connections Cannot load the Remote Access Connection Manager service. Error 711: The operation could not finish because it could not start the Remote Access Connection Manager service in time. Please try the operation again. I traced through some service dependencies and discovered that Secure Socket Tunneling Protocol Service was set to Manual. However, when I try to manually start the service, I get: Services The Secure Socket Tunneling Protocol Service on Local Computer started and then stopped. Some services stop automatically if they are not in use by other services or programs. Setting all the services involved to Automatic did not help. SSTP just showed Automatic and Stopped in the Services panel. I found a solution that involved booting in Safe Mode and deleting the contents of C:\Windows\System32\LogFiles\WMI\RtBackup. This solution worked, and I could set up a vpn connection, but only until I rebooted again. TL;DR I'm looking for a way to permanently enable Secure Socket Tunneling Protocol Service and other vpn-related services permanently so I don't have to reboot into safe mode and delete files every time I need to connect to a vpn.

  • What is the point of PPPoE?

    I am trying to expand my knowledge of networking beyond the basics. I have started reading about PPP, and how it is used in DSL modems with PPPoE and PPPoA. My first impression of PPP was "well that seems pretty similar to Ethernet". They are both data link layer protocols. They both have fields to identify the encapsulated protocol (e.g. IP). They both have related protocols to assign IP addresses (DHCP and NCP). So my first question was "so what's the point of PPP, why not just use Ethernet?". The answer to that was fairly straightforward - Ethernet is not supported over a wide range of media like serial lines, and is a fairly specific technology to LAN's using CAT5 or similar. HOWEVER - then I was reading about PPPoE, and the obvious thought was "well if we are doing something over Ethernet, then Ethernet must be available and in use, so why not just use it?". In other words, PPPoE seems to be encapsulating one data-link layer protocol in another very similar protocol. Why do IP-inside-PPP-inside-Ethernet when we could just be doing IP-inside-Ethernet, and use DHCP rather than NCP to assign the IP address to the home router? Thanks

    In the LLDP-MED and Cisco Discovery Protocol whitepaper, it compares LLDP-MED and CDP. The part I am interested in is emergency location configuration. In LLDP-MED, I can specify the Emergency Line Indentification Number (ELIN) and that number will be used by some IP Phones (e.g. Aastra) when placing emergency calls. The whitepaper states: Location Identification Discovery This capability is important because it normally provides location information from the switch to the phone. (If the phone is configured with location information or can determine its location, then it may send this information to the switch. However, the real value is getting this information from the switch to the phone for phones that cannot determine their own location.) Location identification discovery allows the phone to be aware of its location-information that can be used for location-based applications on the phone. More importantly, this capability can be used to provide location information when making emergency calls. Both Cisco Discovery Protocol and LLDP-MED support the transportation of location information. However, LLDP-MED has more supported data formats than Cisco Discovery Protocol. I have found the documentation on how to set the location and associate the location to the interfaces for LLDP-MED. How is this done for CDP? Is ELIN supported for CDP?

  • ISA 2000 and COD MW2 Steam

    OK, so maybe not the "proper use" of network resources, but we enjoy the odd COD game during lunch hours. When we played COD4, we had a dedicated server setup at the back of the server room. With MW2, we need to be able to connect to steam to be able to play multi-player. I've found this support article here: https://support.steampowered.com/kb%5Farticle.php?ref=8571-GLVN-8711 Which outlines all the ports I need to open. I went through and created the following rules in ISA 2000 (I'm stuck with 2000 for now). Protocol Definition: Steam Primary connection: Port 27000, UDP, Send Receive Secondary Connection: Port range 27001-27030 Send Receive Protocol Definition: Steam TCP In Primary connection: 27014, TCP, Inbound Secondary Connection: Port range: 27015-27050, Inbound Protocol Definition: Steam 4380 Primary connection: 4380, UDP, Send Receive When I start steam on my local workstation (I did add an exception to the Vista Firewall to allow steam), the steam client sits on "Updating Steam" for 5 minutes then errors out with: You must connect to the internet first.
