  As this is my first post in 2011, I wish you all the best for this new year. I don't know for you, but it will be a year of changes for me. I'll tell you more about that when the time comes. For the time being, I just wanted to announce my next speaking engagement: I'll be presenting at SDC2011, the Scandinavian Developer Conference. This event will take place on April 4 and 5 in Göteborg, Sweden. My session will be based on my article about memory leaks: How to detect and avoid memory and resources leaks in .NET applicationsDuring this session we will analyze the most common leak sources in .NET applications and we will see how to detect them in practice. • How do I install mod_dav_svn module on an Apache / MAMP server?

  How do I install additional modules into my server configuration? Currently all of the other modules are installed in /Applications/MAMP/Library/modules...and I see that they are mod_*.so source files, but I cannot seem to get mine to end up here... :? I am trying to set up an SVN repository and use my Apache (MAMP) server to serve the repository. I am using the subversion installation that came (pre-installed?) on Mac OS X 10.5. The repository is working, but I cannot access it remotely through my MAMP server using a client program (Dreamweaver CS5). When I try, I get an error from Dreamweaver, saying: Cannot connect to host xxx: Connection refused. This, I believe, is because I have not properly configured my Apache server to serve the svn repository. So, I added the following lines to my httpd.conf file: <Location /subversion> DAV svn SVNPath /Applications/MAMP/htdocs/svn/ AuthType Basic AuthName "Subversion repository" AuthUserFile /applications/mamp/htdocs/.htpasswd Require ServerAdmin </Location> Restarted the server with the command $ /Applications/MAMP/Library/bin/apachectl -k restart I used this path because otherwise the default apachectl path is set to /usr/sbin/apachectl, which is the location of the pre-installed command on Mac OS X, since the OS comes packaged with a built-in Apache server. And I get the error: Syntax error on line 1153 of /Applications/MAMP/conf/apache/httpd.conf: Unknown DAV provider: svn I checked the upper portion of httpd.conf and see that dav_module (mod_dav.so) is loaded and is in fact in my the modules directory of my server. However, mod_dav_svn is not installed in that directory nor is it in the LoadModule portion of httpd.conf. So I need to install it, right? I have tried installing modules into my MAMP server before but was never successful...because I don't know how to do it. Can someone please walk me through how to install that module? • How to quickly start Programs like "regedit.exe" from the Windows 7 search bar using substring match

  The search bar in Windows 7 is very convenient to quickly start applications by pressing the Win-key and then entering the name of the application. For applications with a Program Menu entry like Firefox, it is sufficient to type Fire and Firefox will be displayed in the Programs section of the search results. For other applications like regedit.exe, I have to type the full command regedit before the correct choice regedit.exe appears. Is there any way to have regedit.exe appear already when I have just entered a substring? Please note: I have seen Add my applications to Vista’s Start Search, but I don't want to add anything to the Start Menu manually. This question is about if there is some configuration that can be tuned to make the results appear. I have also seen Search behavior of Windows 7 start menu, but my problem is not that the exe appears under Files, regedit.exe correctly appears under Programs, but it should appear already for a substring match.

• An open plea to Microsoft to fix the serializers in WCF.

  I simply DO NOT understand how Microsoft can be this far along with a tool like WCF and it STILL tout it as being an "Enterprise" tool. For example... Even if you remove the documentation, the DataContractSerializer DOES NOT support attributes so IPAddress would become an element this not meeting the contract xsd.exe could generate classes but it is a very legacy tool, generates legacy code, and you still suffer from the following issues: NONE of the serializers support emitting of the xs:annotation documentation.  You'd think a consumer would really like to have as much documentation as possible! NONE of the serializers support the enforcement of xs:restriction so you can forget about the xs:minLength, xs:maxLength, or xs:pattern enforcement. Microsoft... please, please, please, please look at putting the work into your serializers so that they support the very basics of designing enterprise data contracts!!

  Microsoft released an update for Windows 7 today (Tuesday, April 27, 2010): KB980408: The April 2010 stability and reliability update for Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 is available. The update fixes, among other things: Windows Explorer may stop responding for 30 seconds when a file or a directory is created or renamed after certain applications are installed. i'm not experiencing it on my own Windows 7 machine, but two colleagues at work were experiencing the problem. i would really like to know what applications were causing problems. Microsoft will never call out the misbehaving applications. i want to know what software i should be ridiculing and insulting. And avoid in the future. Did anyone who was experiencing this problem isolate the applications?

• The Minimalist Approach to Content Governance - Request Phase

For each project, regardless of size, it is critical to understand the required ownership, business purpose, prerequisite education / resources needed to execute and success criteria around it. Without doing this, there is no way to get a handle on the content life-cyle, resulting in a mass of orphaned material. This lowers the quality of end user experiences.     The good news is that by using a simple process in this request phase - we will not have to revisit this phase unless something drastic changes in the project. For each of the elements mentioned above in this stage, the why, how (technically focused) and impact are outlined with the intent of providing the most value to a small team. 1. Ownership Why - Without ownership information it will not be possible to track and manage any of the content and take advantage of many features of enterprise content management technology. To hedge against this, we need to ensure that both a individual and their group or department within the organization are associated with the content. How - Apply metadata that indicates the owner and department or group that has responsibility for the content. Impact - It is possible to keep the content system optimized by running native reports against the meta-data and acting on them based on what has been outlined for success criteria. This will maximize end user experience, as content will be faster to locate and more relevant to the user by virtue of working through a smaller collection. 2. Business Purpose Why - This simple step will weed out requests that have tepid justification, as users will most likely not spend the effort to request resources if they do not have a real need. How - Use a simple online form to collect and workflow the request to management native to the content system. Impact - Minimizes the amount user generated content that is of low value to the organization. 3. Prerequisite Education Resources Needed Why - If a project cannot be properly staffed the probability of its success is going to be low. By outlining the resources needed - in both skill set and duration - it will cause the requesting party to think critically about the commitment needed to complete their project and what gap must be closed with regard to education of those resources. How - In the simple request form outlined above, resources and a commitment to fulfilling any needed education should be included with a brief acceptance clause that outlines the requesting party's commitment. Impact - This stage acts as a formal commitment to ensuring that resources are able to execute on the vision for the project. 4. Success Criteria Why - Similar to the business purpose, this is a key element in helping to determine if the project and its respective content should continue to exist if it does not meet its intended goal. How - Set a review point for the project content that will check the progress against the originally outlined success criteria and then determine the fate of the content. This can even include logic that will tell the content system to remove items that have not been opened by any users in X amount of time. Impact - This ensures that projects and their contents do not live past their useful lifespans. Just as with orphaned content, non-relevant information will slow user's access to relevant materials for the jobs. Request Phase Summary With a simple form that outlines the ownership of a project and its content, business purpose, education and resources, along with success criteria, we can ensure that an enterprise content management system will stay clean and relevant to end users - allowing it to deliver the most value possible. The key here is to make it straightforward to make the request and let the content management technology manage as much as possible through metadata, retention policies and workflow. Doing these basic steps will allow project content to get off to a great start in the enterprise! • Beginners guide to developing optimization software

  I am novice in "serious" programming i.e. applications that deal with real-life applications and software projects that go beyond school assignments. My interests include optimization, operations research, algorithms and lately i discovered how much I do like software design/development/engineering. I have already developed some simple desktop applications for some "famous" problems like TSP using heuristc approaches, a VRP solver (in progress) and so on. While developing this kind of software I actually used basic concepts taught at school such as object-orientation analysis and design. But, I found these courses rather elementary and quite boring (for my expectations). So I decided to go a little further and start developing "real" software (and this is where I realized how important and interesting software engineering/design is.) Now, here's my issue: I can not find a "study guide" for developing software of this kind. Currently, there are numerous resources out there (books, websites, tutorials) in designing and developing complex IS, web applications, smartphone apps but I can't find a book for example entitled "optimization software development". Definetly, someone could claim that "design patterns apply to software in general" but that's not my point. My point is that I could simply use my imagination for "simple" implementations, but what happens, when my imagination can not go further? In other words I'm looking for a guide/path to bridge the gap between: Mathematics-Algorithm Design-Software Engineering-Optimization-Software development

• Java and what to do with it

  I've been browsing through several websites and several topics on this website. Now I'm just a starting programmer and I want to make a good decision. From what I understand is that Java is used alot for server stuff, and web applets but not really for computer applications running on a client, it's also used for Android programming and several other mobiles. I'm really interested in Android programming, I really love to program for mobile devices, in this case Android because I really think it has a lot of potential and I don't like the iPhone. If I want to program on Android I have to learn Java (aside from Mono). but if my decision changes over the next couple of years I don't think Java is the right language to get a job that programs computer applications. I think I get a job where I have to program server stuff, rather than computer applications. That's why I think C# is a good choice. I can program for Windows Phone 7 (I hope that will get big). and I have the feeling C# is more widely used for computer applications. so I think C# is more versatile looking at Mobile programming and computer programming. Or am I totally wrong thinking this?

• mac osx software always order files alphabetically rather than by type.

  i have noticed many mac applications sort the files alphabetically rather than by type. a good example would be coda by panic.com the files in the file menu are organized alphabetically, i requested for them to add the feature to organize files by type and they've said that its a finder thing. so i went in search to look at other applications to see if they were organizing by type i noticed dreamweaver cs4 had this same problem and now including dreamweaver cs5. there has to be something in the mac that does this and that i can modify. i played with spotlight and it now displays its files by type (thinking thats what i can do) but it didnt take affect in other applications. what library are these applications using to display a file menu for its files?

The first one, with vmware on fullscreen, and the second one as the main screen with windows 7 with the browser and some applications, is there any way to toggle the screens configuration with a hotkey so it switches the main screen to the left and all applications accordingly (Vmware on full screen on the right monitor, and all applications on the left)

• Best way: restructure an existing Team Foundation Server (TFS) solution

  In my department we are developing several smaller AddOns for some unified communication server. For versioning and distributed development we use a Team Foundation Server 2012. But: there is only one large TFS solution for all of our applications and libraries: Main Solution Applications App 1 App 2 App 3 Externals Libraries Lib 1 Lib 2 Tools The "Application" path contains all main applications. Those are not depending on each other, but they depend on the Libraries and Externals projects. The "Externals" path contains some external DLLs referenced in our Applications and Libraries. The Libraries path contains commonly used libs (UI templates, Helper classes, etc.). They do not depend on each other and they are referenced in the Libraries and the Tools projects. The Tools path contains some helper programs like setup helpers, update web services, etc. Now, there's some major points why I'd like to change this structure: We can't use server builds. It's uncomfortable to manage TFS scrum management with sprints, impediments, etc. with a solution structure like that. Every developer always has access to all projects in the solution. A complete build lasts too long if one accidentally hits [F6] in Visual Studio... What would you change in this solution? How would you break those projects into smaller Solutions, how should those solutions be structured. My first approach would be, to create one TFS project for each Application, Library and Tool. • Why does my CPU Usage reach 100% too often?

  I'm using a dual-core processor and often see my CPU usage reaches 100%. I realize this may happen if I'm running too much applications, so when I know the computer starts to run slowly, I start to close my applications. I usually run 4-5 applications simultaneously. Usually those are: web browser (Google Chrome), Adobe Photoshop, Notepad++, XAMPP, and Windows Task Manager. Usually I close tabs in my Chrome first, because I often browse the net with about 20 tabs/4 windows open, so I presume that would take much memory (bad habit, I know). But even after closing Chrome's tabs or closing other applications, my CPU Usage often stays at high percentage - 72% at best, 100% at worst. I check the Processes tab on Windows Task Manager and usually found the System, System Idle Process, or services.exe taking the highest CPU process (could reach 60). Why is this happening? And is there any solution? EDIT I have T2250 @ 1,73 Ghz and 2.5 GB RAM

  The search bar in Windows 7 is very convenient to quickly start applications by pressing the Win-key and then entering the name of the application. For applications with a Program Menu entry like Firefox, it is sufficient to type Fire and Firefox will be displayed in the Programs section of the search results. For other applications like regedit.exe, I have to type the full command regedit before the correct choice regedit.exe appears. Is there any way to have regedit.exe appear already when I have just entered a substring? Please note: I have seen Add my applications to Vista’s Start Search, but I don't want to add anything to the Start Menu manually. This question is about if there is some configuration that can be tuned to make the results appear. I have also seen Search behavior of Windows 7 start menu, but my problem is not that the exe appears under Files, regedit.exe correctly appears under Programs, but it should appear already for a substring match.

• How do I create the "Gnome-Desktop-Item-Edit" program's launch icon with root privileges and more?

  I personally dont prefer running commands in terminal to achieve a task and prefer apps to execute the job. Creating launcher for apps is one such command where I prefer the gnome-desktop-item-edit application for creating launchers. If the gnome package is installed, just searching "create launcher" opens the app. But, it doesnt serve any purpose, because for starters the application cannot create launchers for various apps without root permission and the location where the apps have to be created. Usually the launcher apps with root permission can be created at /usr/share/applications and without root permission at /.local/share/applications. I dont prefer the latter location as it is vulnerable to deletion. Hence, in order to create the launchers through gnome with root, everytime I am forced to open this through terminal using the below command! $ sudo gnome-desktop-item-edit ~/.local/share/applications --create-new I dont want to open terminal everytime I want to create an application launcher on unity! I am able to lock the "Create Launcher" App in the Launcher, but not with root privileges So I want to be able to create the "Create Launcher" app shortcut on unity with default root privileges and for the app to create the launchers at usr/share/applications by default! Please help! P.S. I dont have enough rep points to add screenshots to help with the question!

  I've got Chrome running on my Linux netbook, it's great and, unlike the Mac version, the 'Create Application Shortcut' option isn't greyed out. So I created one for Gmail. The 'applications' get stored at ~/.local/share/applications but I haven't managed to launch it yet. If I use Chrome in terminal $ google-chrome ~/.local/share/applications/google-application-reallylong-randomname.thing It opens the file in a new tab in Chrome and helpfully downloads it for me! Anyone got application shortcuts working in Linux?

  I need to connect to a MongoDB instance from my EJB3 application, running on glassfish 3.0.1. The Mongo project provides a set of drivers, and I'm able to use them in a standalone Java application. How would I use them in a JEE application? Or maybe better phrasing: how would I make a 3rd party library available to my application when it runs in an EJB container?
