• Building Asp.net Page code behind correctly

  Hi everyone, I need some guidelines about building the code behind of my pages correctly. I mean, I'm building in asp.net for a year now, and mostly using the Page_Load event. (and ofcourse "event handling" the events triggered by the user's actions). I know about the page life cycle and the order of events that happens when a page is requested etc.. . Is it normal that, generally, in a data-driven page, for example, I'm not using any of the "pre_render", "page_unload", "pre_init" etc.. event handlers? or am I missing something here? any guidelines would help me a lot, including links or whatever you think that would instruct me well. thanks.

• A tool to find and fix incomplete source code documentation

  I have several finished, older PHP projects with a lot of includes that I would like to document in javadoc/phpDocumentor style. While working through each file manually and being forced to do a code review alongside the documenting would be the best thing, I am, simply out of time constraints, interested in tools to help me automate the task as much as possible. The tool I am thinking about would ideally have the following features: Parse a PHP project tree and tell me where there are undocumented files, classes, and functions/methods (i.e. elements missing the appropriate docblock comment) Provide a method to half-way easily add the missing docblocks by creating the empty structures and, ideally, opening the file in an editor (internal or external I don't care) so I can put in the description. Optional: Automatic recognition of parameter types, return values and such. But that's not really required. The language in question is PHP, though I could imagine that a C/Java tool might be able to handle PHP files after some tweaking. Thanks for your great input!

  Hi, I'm currently developing a software to compare 2 images. I start with extract the image's RGB values, form a matrix of array and then attempt to compress the values using PCA, and then match/recognize it with a pre-set data to find its similarity. But I can't proceed with the PCA part.   Hi, I am trying to get my head round some basic erlang functionality and I could do with some comments on the following. I have the following erlang code that takes a list of tuples and returns a list minus an element if a key is found: delete(Key, Database) -> remove(Database, Key, []). remove([], Key, Acc) -> Acc; remove([H|T], Key, Acc) -> if element(1, H) /= Key -> [H| remove(T, Key, Acc)]; true -> remove(T, Key, Acc) end. Is this a good way of doing this? The if statement seems incorrect. Also is my use of the accumulator Acc making this tail recursive? Cheers Paul

  I have a treeview with an editable CellRendererText: self.renderer = gtk.CellRendererText() self.renderer.set_property('editable', True) But now I need to launch the edition from code instead from user, this is to focus the user attention in the fact he just created a new row and needs to be named. I tried this but does not work: self.renderer.start_editing( gtk.gdk.Event(gtk.gdk.NOTHING), self.treeview, str(index), gtk.gdk.Rectangle(), gtk.gdk.Rectangle(), 0) Neither does not throw errors, but the documentation about for what is each argument is not clear, in fact I really don't know if start_editing method is for this.   Hi, I'm trying to generate C# code classes with SvcUtil.exe instead of Xsd.exe. The latter is giving me some problems. Command line: SvcUtil.exe myschema.xsd /dconly /ser:XmlSerializer Several SvcUtil problems are described and solved here: http://blog.shutupandcode.net/?p=761 One problem I can't solve is this one: Error: Type 'DatafieldDescription' in namespace '' cannot be imported. Attributes must be optional and from namespace 'http://schemas.microsoft.com/2003/10/Seri alization/'. Either change the schema so that the types can map to data contract types or use ImportXmlType or use a different serializer. ' I changed <xs:attribute name="Order" use="required"> to <xs:attribute name="Order" use="optional"> and <xs:attribute name="Order"> But the error remains. Is it possible to use attributes, or do I have to delete them all (in that case, this excercition is over)?

• Facebook calling Google App Engine code using GET instead of POST

  I've been developing a Facebook app using Google App Engine in Python and the pyfacebook bindings. For weeks everything worked fine but suddenly it stopped. At first I thought it was a code change so I rolled back the entire dev directory to a version I knew worked, but still it failed. It's possible a change I made to the application's settings caused the issue but, if so, I can't figure out what. I've figured out that the problem is that instead of calling the post(self) method of my Main class, Facebook is calling using a GET. Does anyone know why Facebook would use a GET method instead of a POST? It's an IFrame app. Thanks,

• Mod-Rewrite rules are breaking 404 routing

  I am using the following mod-rewrite in my .htaccess file: RewriteRule ^$ pages/ RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d RewriteRule ^(.*)$ pages/$1 [L] The intention is to hide the subdirectory called /pages/ from displaying in the URL. So this: http://mysite.com/pages/home.html Will look like this: http://mysite.com/home.html It works but there are some unintended consequences. As a direct result of the .htaccess code I posted above, my 404 routing is no longer working at all. Anything that should trigger a 404 error page is instead generating a 500 Server Error. How to fix?

I would really like to be able to attempt to call my web service / db, catch any faults such as a communication failure and then retry the same operation in 1 hours time (after I have logged the exception).   Hi all, I am looking at using hibernate validator for a requirement of mine. I want to validate a bean where properties may have multiple validation checks. e.g. class MyValidationBean { @NotNull @Length( min = 5, max = 10 ) private String myProperty; } But if this property fails validation I want a specific error code to be associated with the ConstraintViolation, regardless of whether it failed because of @Required or @Length, although I would like to preserve the error message. class MyValidationBean { @NotNull @Length( min = 5, max = 10 ) @ErrorCode( "1234" ) private String myProperty; } Something like the above would be good but it doesn't have to be structured exactly like that. I can't see a way to do this with hibernate validator. Is it possible? Thanks.

• How to share WinForms and code between 2 projects

  Hi I have a working Windows Forms app (split into an EXE and a few DLLs). Now I've been asked to look at creating another app (MyAppLite) that has only a very small subset of the functionality. Think of it as similar to MS Word Viewer vs. MS Word. Everything that I need to build MyAppLite is contained in the main solution - essentially I need to use a couple of the WinForms and whatever bits in the DLLs they call into. What would be the best way to do this? I was thinking of creating another Project in my solution for MyAppLite, then adding the necessary source files as links (using Add Existing Item Add As Link in Solution Explorer). I definitely wouldn't want to maintain 2 copies of the source code. FYI it's a .NET 2.0 VB app, using VS2008. thanks Richard

• In C# should I use uint or int for values that are never supposed to be negative?

  Suppose that the MaxValue of (roughly :) ) 2^31 vs 2^32 does not matter. On one hand, using uint seems nice because it is self-explanatory, it indicates (and promises?) that some value may never be negative. However, int is more common, and a cast is often inconvenient. One can just use int and always supplement it with code contracts (everyone has moved to .Net 4.0 by now, right?) Standard libraries do use int for Length and Size properties, even though those should never be negative. So, is it obvious to you that int is better than uint most of the time, or is it more complicated? Please ask questions if you find that this question is not clearly stated. Thanks.

  What is the best way to launch reporting services reports from .Net code? One method would be to dynamically build a URL and launch a browser. Something like this: http://server/ReportServer/Pages/ReportViewer.aspx?%2fReport+Directory%2fReport%20Name&FirstParameter=1,2,3&SecondParameter=8/30/2009&rs%3aCommand=Render I don't like how it creates a dependency on the specific URL--especially report parameters which are very likely to change. Is there a better way? The reports I want to link to are in several reporting services projects hosted on one (eventually two) servers.

  I'm looking for a way to visualize compiler warnings and remarks, by annotating or otherwise showing which lines cause a report. This is much like a modern IDE like NetBeans or Eclipse already does, but I'd like to take output from several compilers (and other static code analysis tools) at once, and create one single annotation in order to get a better overview. The rationale is that we've seen some problems go completely undetected by, say, Visual Studio 2005, but accurately detected with a proprietary ARM compiler, and vice versa. Cross-referencing warnings could potentially locate problems better, but doing so completely manually is infeasible. Have you heard of such a tool? Could an open-source IDE like Eclipse be extended to use several compilers at once, or has it already been done?

• Reliable portability for C code without relying on the preprocessor

  Relying on the preprocessor and predefined compiler macros for achieving portability seems hard to manage. What's a better way to achieve portability for a C project? I want to put environment-specific code in headers that behave the same way. Is there a way to have the build environment choose which headers to include? I was thinking that I'd put the environment-specific headers into directories for specific environments. The build environment would then just copy the headers from the platform's directory into the root directory, build the project, and then remove the copies.

  So, I've defined a class like DataLoggingSystemStateReceiver { DataLoggingSystemStateReceiver() { // stuff } // ... other functions here }; In main, I instantiate DataLoggingSystemStateReceiver like so: int main() { // ... run stuff Sensor sensor(port, timer); DataLoggingSystemStateReceiver dlss(); Log::notice("started"); return 0; } However, when I step through this code in gdb, it runs: Sensor sensor(port, timer); skips DataLoggingSystemStateReceiver dlss(); and continues with Log::notice("started"); What gives? EDIT: By changing DataLoggingSystemStateReceiver dlss(); to DataLoggingSystemStateReceiver dlss; in main(), the line executes. Can someone explain why?

  We are interested in finding out some statistics of various frameworks Mailing list activity on say richfaces. Much similar to what is available on http://code.google.com (Low, Medium, High) + average number of emails per day | per month. Number of releases made in a year including patch, minor, major releases. We did look at the maven repositories but that wasn't very useful either. We did look at ohloh, but didn't get the desired information. Any other ideas on where to get this information (any maven-2 plugins)?

  If you have checked out the new MSDN layout recently you will notice that there are tabs for example code: Do you see that there is room for F# (is there really anyone using that?) but not for Delphi! My question is: can we all ask Microsoft to add a Delphi tab and as a community take care off adding samples. If you agree please request Microsoft to add the Delphi tab (the more people, the more likely Microsoft will respond).
