  I work at a large company where technical people fall roughly in one of these categories: A developer on a scrum team who develops for a single product and maybe works with other teams that are closely related to the product. An architect who is more of a consultant on multiple teams (5-6) and tries to recognize commonalities between team efforts that could be abstracted into libraries (architects do not write the library code, however). This architect also attends many meetings with management and attempts to set technical direction. In my company the architect role is where most technical people move into as the next step in their career. My questions are: Do most companies work such a way that their highest paid technical people are far removed from writing code? Is this a natural tendency for a developer's career? Can a developer have it all (code AND set direction?)

• Enable permanent vertical and horizontal scroll bars

  I am facing a problem and it is in Ubuntu (14.04) permanent scroll bar is not there but it appears when you move the mouse pointer to right most side or bottom most side. But it is very difficult to use and lately it takes too much to appear and sometimes it doesn't appear at all and so i have to close the application and reopen it. So i want to ask how to enable permanent scroll bars on right side and bottom most side. I am sure many people must have faced this problem before me. Thanks. • Moving from an IT department to a proper technology company

  I have been working with Java/web applications in an IT department of a retail company. As much as work goes, there is nothing much to say. Fixing couple of if/else loops, writing some simple business logic etc., is all what I have been doing. Having said that, I feel I have a good technical knowledge, and I am willing to move to companies like Microsoft/Google/Amazon etc., [I want to work in these places, because I feel I am a technical guy, and I am working in a place where most people freak out when the words like 'algorithm' are heard] I can of course prepare algorithms/computer science fundamentals etc.,(I hold a 4 year degree in computer science program) but beyond that, will my experience hold against me ? I doubt I'll even get a call from them seeing my work experience. What kind of questions(apart from the algorithm types) can I expect ?

• Creating an OpenGL FPS camera: I have the position and orientation vectors, now what?

  I have been struggling to create a first person camera in OpenGL ES 2.0 without using gluLookAt(). I grab the camera's orientation vectors (the way it's looking) from the current modelview matrix, and use that to calculate the new forward/backward (Z) translation value. I then calculate the strafe (X) value from the dot product of Z and Y (which is always 1.0). So, I have all the information I need to create a view matrix, but how do I do that without using gluLookAt? Almost all the examples I've seen use gluLookAt, but no such function exists in OpenGL ES 2.0. • Moving multiple objects on a map

  I have multiple objects on my isometric game, for example, NPC's doing path finding automatically to walk around the map. Now there could be any number of them from 0 to infinity (hypthetical as no PC could handle that). My question is: is simply looping each one individually the smartest way to animate them all? Surely as the number of units increases you will notice a lag occuring on units near the end of loop still "waiting" for their next animation movement. The alternative is a swarm algorithm to move all objects together. Is that a smarter idea or do both situations apply depending on the circumstances of the game?

Edit : The Solution : Upgrade kernel and then update all graphic card drivers.Now there is no problem .

• What is the most cross-browser/system compatible option for 3d graphics on a web page?

  I would like to develop a bit of functionality for a web site that involves a bit of 3D - the user can move around objects, rotate them and texture them. So far I've looked into: WebGL (in particular three.js) and it looks great, but it's not supported in IE nor IOS. IOS supports the <canvas> tag, but only 2d. It looks like three.js has an unsupported hack to make a 3d thing use the 2d canvas instead without textures, but this looks like a hack. I also considered resorting to Flash which works on most browsers, but that won't work on IOS. What's my best option for doing 3d web graphics on the vast array of browsers and interfaces? At the moment I'm thinking WebGL for web (and ask people to use chrome or firefox, and take the hit on IE) and then maybe write a native app for IOS, but I am not sure if there are better alternatives available that I don't know of.

• How to make Ubuntu 14.04 run with less lag?

  I recently updated from Ubuntu 12.04 LTS to 14.04 LTS and for the first time it worked! However, whenever I move my mouse over an application icon on the unity shell, the animation takes forever to show me what the name of the application is ( A.k.a the tooltip ). The same happens with menus and sub-menus. Other than that, it is overall in general, slow. I just want to know if there are any tips to fix this or make my system faster. • How to copy the file from source to destination only once at a time?

  I have to copy the file from my desktop to my mounted directory. I was using the following command to copy the file from my desktop to mounted directory. os.system("cp -f /home/Desktop/filename /media/folder_1"). It works fine. But the problem is while copying the file from my source to mounted directory(folder_1) if any interruption is happens like network down, then the system continuously keep on trying. It couldn't skip that process. Finally, when the network comes the files are again copy to my mounted directory. Due to this continuous trying, next time i try to move the content it throws "permission denied" error. How do i copy the file only once, if any network issues happen then it will not keep try to copy, instead of that, it throws the error. If you know, Let me. Its very useful to me.

• Setting up fastcgi on an Ubunutu server (socket file permissions issue)

  I am trying to set up mod_fcgid on my server. Part of the requirement is that Apache needs to create a socket file for mod_fcgid. I specified the folder for Apache to write the socket data to: /var/run/apache2/fcgid I then specified this file in my fcgid.conf file as follows: SocketPath /var/run/apache2/fcgid/sock I then changed the owner of the folder to www-data (the apache user) and gave the owner full permissions to the folder and its contents. I was able to run my test fcgi app then. When I rebooted the machine, y fastcgi app no longer worked. After some investigation, I found that ownership of /var/run/apache2/fcgid has been reset to root, and with permission reset to 700 I have the following questions: Is there something specific about the /var/run folder? why is the permissions being reset after a reboot? Should I move my socket file to another location (in case root automatically takes ownership of contents in this folder for security reasons?) I am running Ubuntu 10.0.4 LTS 64 bit

• How to render a texture partly transparent?

  Good Morning StackOverflow, I'm having a bit of a problem right now as I can't seem to find a way to render part of a texture transparently with openGL. Here is my setting : I have a quad, representing a wall, covered with this texture (converted to PNG for uploading purposes). Obviously, I want the wall to be opaque, except for the panes of glass. There is another plane behind the wall which is supposed to show a landscape. I want to see the landscape from behind the window. Each texture is a TGA with alpha channel. The "landscape" is rendered first, then the wall. I thought it would be sufficient to achieve this effect but apparently it's not the case. The part of the window supposed to be transparent is black and the landscape only appears when I move past the wall. I tried to fiddle with GLBlendFunc() after having enabled it but it doesn't seem to do the trick. Am i forgetting an important step ? Thank you :)

  I've searched around and it seems like most people are using tile-based map systems. I suppose this question is more theoretical than practical (I am not very concerned about memory or performance speed), but I want to know: what other ways can a map be created in a game? A map being a graphic representation of terrain that can be navigated, has entrances and exits, and boundares (no-go zones). Besides using text files to store and arrays to load tile data, one idea I had was to store a map entirely as a graphic file and use queries on the pixel colour to determine boundaries (ie, you can only move in a certain direction if the way is bright enough in that direction). What other creative map systems are out there?

• Android Java: Way to effectively pause system time while debugging?

  In my project, I call nanoTime and use that to get a deltaTime which I pass to my entities and animations. However, while debugging (for example, stepping through my code), the system time on my phone is happily chugging along, so it's impossible to look at, say, two sequential frames of data in the debugger (since by the time I'm done looking at the first frame, the system time has continued to move ahead by seconds or even minutes). Is there a programming practice or method to pause the system clock (or a way for my code to intercept and fake my deltaTime) whenever I pause execution from the debugger? Additional Information: I'm using Eclipse Classic with the ADT plugin and a Samsung SII, coding in Java.   I'm planning to build a payment receipt/booking application for a media company with several branches in different locations. The application should be able to move data across the network/internet to a central database where the administrator/accountant in a different location will be able to see the result of the entire job for the day from each branch. Application will run on windows environment. Will be able to send result of the booking to a Point Of Sales printer for print output. Now, I'm confused about choosing the right programming language to accomplish this task. I'm between beginner/intermediate level in PHP, I know HTML/CSS and JavaScript. I have tried to do this in PHP but, I'm face with several challenges and I fear for the POS part since PHP application run on the web browser. I don't know if python will be best suited for this and how long will it take someone with my experience level to pick up python. Any suggestion will be highly appreciated.

• After upgrading to 12.04 lts server, the mouse is intermittently working

  After this upgrade, I've had a problem with the mouse intermittently working and programs crashing (like zentyal crashing and the error reporting application crashing) I also had an error on the screen that said: "Could not grab your mouse. A malisious client may be eavesdropping on your session or you may have just clicked a menu or some application just decided to get focus. Try again." What's going on with this system? Did I really get malware that quickly? This system has been boxed up since 2011. I only did the upgrade today... In regards to the mouse I can move it around, but when I click on something, it doesn't work.

• Touchpad & TrackPoint (ThinkPad L520) suddenly unresponsive

  My mother has a problem with her ThinkPad L520 notebook (Ubuntu 11.10, Unity). She boots the device, everything works fine at first. But then, out of nowhere, her touchpad + trackpoint stop working. She can't click or drag the mouse. If she connects an external mouse, she can move the pointer and click (but the internal touchpad or trackpoint still don't work). She already updated everything through the update manager, but still no success...like I said, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. There are no 'special' mouse drivers installed. What can I do to fix this? Thank you for your help! :)

I need time value in Epoch Time (long) as it has been packed in Bytes 5,6,7,8 and 3 and 4 as follows: (the bit structure for the time value is as follows): Bytes 5 to 8 (32 bit word) Packs time value bits from 0 thru 31 (byte 5 has 0 to 7 bits, byte 6 has 8 to 15, byte 7 has 16 to 23, byte 8 has 24 to 31). the remaining 10 bits of time value are packed in Bytes 3 and byte 4 as follows: byte 3 has 2 bits:32 and 33, and Byte 4 has remaining bits : 34 to 41. So total bits for time value is 42 bits, packed as above. I need to compute epoch value coming out of these 42 bits. How do I do it? • Screen Brightness Stuck on high on an HP dv7t laptop

  I have an otherwise fully-functioning install of Ubuntu 12.04 on my HPdv7t laptop. When I press the 'brightness buttons' on the keyboard the associated images appear on my screen to say I am increasing/decreasing the screen brightness. When I go into "System Settings" I can move the 'brightness slider bar' up and down. But none of that changes the fact that my screen is stuck on the highest brightness setting. ANY clues on how to fix this would be greatly appreciated. This giant 17-inch monitor is blinding, and this is making it hard to code for any length of time.

  While looking into some test failures, I've identified an curious issue with my update logic. This: game.update(100); Behaves slightly different from: for (int i = 0; i < 10; i++) game.update(10); The concrete example here is a rotating entity. It rotates by exactly 360 degrees in the first case, but only by about 352 in the second. This leads to slight variations in how things move, depending on the frame rate. Not enough to be noticeable in practice, but I did notice it when writing tests. Now my question is: Should this be fully deterministic, i.e. the outcome of update(1) * n should equal update(n) exactly? Or is it normal to have some variance and I should make my test assertions more generous?

  Possible Duplicate: Change host / keep emails OK here's the situation...I'm trying to transfer my domain and email address to a new hosting service and I would like to start using Google's domain apps for my email, etc. My email address is currently on a WebMail type platform and when I move my domain and start using Google domain apps I would also like to keep the old emails and have them imported the the email address on Google. Note: The email address will be the same on both hosts. For example [email protected]. So its keeping the same address between two different systems. I've been Googling how to do this for awhile and all the migrate options that come up don't appear in the the Google inbox setting or domain apps config settings. Any help is greatly appreciated.

• android game: how to approach mutliplayer

  I'm making a single player game that is near completion, and I am already starting to think about giving the game multiplayer. The multiplayer would basically be finding someone to play against, likely in a waiting room or just have a match-making function, and then having a pokemon style battle between the people in real time. I think it would be relatively simple as I'm just sending information about each attack(move chosen and damage) and what it did back and forth, but I'm not sure what resources to consult for this. I am very new to Android/Java development and really just learning as I go. I have heard a bit about Skiller, but I'm still unfamiliar with using other SDK's and how easy it may be. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what SDK's or methods for accomplishing this. I currently have no money to spend on software development, but I'd like to get started on learning how to do this.
