• Three disk (possibly RAID) data recovery

  I have on my desk three 160 GB disks that were once part of an HP Proliant Windows 2003 Server. They may have been part of a RAID configuration of some sort. They may or may not be damaged in some way. When I interface them via USB, one of them shows up as a drive, but unformatted. The others show up as uninitialized disks in manager. An alternative explanation is that the two drives were simply not unused. What's my first step? I've recovered data off damaged drives before but never had anything to do with RAID configs. How can I even tell if any type of RAID was used?

• Automatically make user local administrator on their computer through GPO?

  In our AD 2003 domain each user gets local admin permissions on their computer. Everyone else can login with their domain account as normal user. Right now this means going to the desktop and manually adding the user as a local administrator. Is there any way to automate this process through logon scripts or GPOs? I have found ways to use a gpo to make everyone who logs in to a computer a local admin, but really only want to give it to the primary user (or in some cases users) of the computer. I've also seen methods that required adding a group for each computer...but really dont want to clutter AD like that. I do have a list mapping each user to each computer name. If it matters the desktops are a mix of xp and win7.

• How to inspect/modify Windows Firewall rules while the Windows Firewall/ICS service is stopped and disabled?

  I'm trying to fix up my friend's remote Windows Server 2003 R2 machine. I have Remote Desktop access at the moment. However, I notice that Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing service of the remote machine is disabled, which seems to be a bad idea. If I enable and start the service now, I may lose my Remote Desktop access in case the exception rule for Remode Desktop has not been defined in Windows Firewall. So I need a way to inspect and modify exception rules even as the Windows Firewall/ICS service is stopped and disabled. Does anybody know how?

  Hello, Environment: Windows Server 2008 R2 fully patched, working as Domain Controller in Win 2003 native domain. Users started to report problems with share, it turned out that server service won't start. I've scrambled google but can't find a thing. Any ideas will be appreciated. Thanks in advance :) Service fails to start, then when starting service I get: Windows could not start the Server service on SERVERNAME. Error 1079: The account specified for this service is different from the account specified for other services running in the same process. In System Event Log: Event 7023 The Server service terminated with the following error: The account used is a server trust account. • Why can't I install MySQL on my computer? [closed]

  I have read a lot of tutorials, but I am still having problems. What I tried: I downloaded mysql-5.5.9-winx64. All that I read says that I can run Setup.exe, but there is no such file in the download. The other option I know there is, is including \mysql-5.5.9-winx64\bin in the PATH variable and then trying to execute the mysql command. When I do that, the error I get is: ERROR 2003 (HY000): Can't connect to MySQL server on 'localhost' (10061) I then downloaded mysql-5.5.9-winx64.msi, which is easier to install, but once I followed the instructions and it was installed, I got the same error executing the mysql command. How can I use MySQL? EDIT: I've now removed everything I installed, and I want to start from scratch.

• Some Domain Clients unable to access certain websites

  I have a small domain around 20 clients with a 2003 R2 SP2 DC. Most of my clients can browse the internet freely and dont have a problem. However a couple are reporting problems accessing certain sites. IE: Hotmail, skyscanner, bbc news They can browse the sites sometimes then other times they get 408\409 errors. other machines in the domain can access these sites. I have cleared out dns cache on these machines modified external dns servers on the DC still to no avail. The main issue is the person not able to access skyscanner uses it several times a day to book flights for employess going on leave or returning to work. both clients are running XP SP3 though one machine is getting change for one running win7 shortly. Any advice greatly appreciated. thanks

• iPhone 3GS Contacts 'Sometimes' Won't Sync Back to Exchange

  I don't know if anyone else has experienced this so just thought I'd find out if it's a known issue or if it's just happening to me. since I first got my 3GS, I've had it synced with Micorsoft Exchange (initially 2003, now 2008). If I go into my contacts on the phone and add a new contact it immediately syncs back at my Exchange server and vice versa. However, sometimes if I add a contact via one of the 'quick links' (Like if I get a text from someone not already in my Contacts on the phone, then use the facility to create a contact for this number), while the contact is visible on the iPhone, it 'never' makes it to the Exchange server. Does this happen to anyone else?

• IIS 6.0 :: SSL certificate install :: issue

  Certificate request process works fine. Once the certificate is received from VeriSign, the installation process also works fine (no errors.) However, once installed, the new certificate is not "assigned." Meaning, when I view the IIS instance security properties, it still shows the previous certificate start & end dates. Thoughts? Windows 2003, Web Edition. I have 3 other Win2003WE machines, configured nearly the same, and do not have this problem.

• Application running as a service is not able to create the same number of processes as when it runs

  I have a Windows application which creates up to 35 processes and it's working OK when it's running from cmd. But when it is executed as a service on the same machine it is able to create only 20 processes and all other are killed because of some kind of resource exhaustion problem. The problem is persistent on one Windows 2003 server but not reproducible on other servers. • How can I extract data from a 3rd party application's UI controls?

  In 2003 I found a little utility which allowed me to select a control (like a listview) on any application, and it would copy it's contents into the clipboard. For example, you could select the list in Windows Explorer, and all the filenames, sizes, dates, etc. would be copied for you to paste into Notepad. I don't remember the name of it, but I do remember the name was so unrelated that I could never find it when I needed it. So now, years later, I can't find it. Does anybody know of any utilities which might do this? Or possibly even the utility I'm talking about?

• Get CruiseControl to talk to github with the correct public key.

  Hi All, Has anybody installed git and ControlControl and got CruiseControl to pull from GitHub on a window 2003 server. I keep getting public key errors (access denied) - Which is good i suppose as that confirms git is talking to github. However what is not good is that I dont not know where to install the rsa keys so they will be picked up by the running process (git in the context of cc.net). Any help would save me a lot of hair! I have tried installing the keys into; c:\Program Files\Git.ssh Whereby running git bash and cd ~ take me to: c:\Program Files\Git Thanks in advance

• Export policy configuration from eTrust ITM 8.1

  Currently we are using the Enterprise AV Solution eTrust ITM 8.1. The licenses are running out in october and we are going to replace eTrust with another AV solution. The eTrust Server is running on Windows Server 2003 SP2 with an MS SQL 2000 Standard Edition. The problem is that we've got many different policy - sets which we have to redefine in the new AV solution. Is there any way with eTrust ITM 8.1 to export the different policies as csv, pdf ... whatever? • DNSCache excesive memory usage Windows Server 2008 R2

  We are having an issue with the dnscache service where its memory usage is becoming excessive (~6GB) after a week or two. Restarting the service frees this memory but performing ipconfig /flushdns does not, an ipconfig /displaydns shows aprox 15-20 entries in the cache. We have checked and there appears to be aprox 150 DNS queries per second taking place but I would not expect this to have the effect of causing this memory issue. I have tried to search MSDN for hotfixes or bug reports but I could only find a reference to a memory leak in windows 2003. can anyone suggest how to proceed.

  I want to delete an old Windows directory from my system drive (C), but I am unable to due NTFS permissions. I tried from Win 7 and Win 2003, but can't do it. I tried safe mode as well with same result. Is there any way to work around this (other then formating the drive)? Perhaps changing the owner or something? It errors at files like "oldwin/bfsvc.exe". Is there some "superuser" in windows similar to linux root account? Thanks

• Can't access link in network using fully qualified domain name

  I have installed windows server 2003 and configured Domain controller (domain name - xyz.com) and DNS service. for that I have configured fully qualified domain name as server.xyz.com also I have installed apache tomcat with port 8080 on that server and accessed link successfully using "http://localhost:8080", "http://ip address of server:8080", "http://server.xyz.com:8080". but its working for local machine, and when I tried to access it from another machine in same network using "http://ip address of server:8080" its worked for me. but when I tried it using fully qualified domain name i.e. "http://server.xyz.com:8080" it's giving me error, "Could not connect to server.xyz.com" Please guide me getting this setup done. I need to be able to access this link "http://ip address of server:8080" as "http://server.xyz.com:8080" outside my network Any suggestion are highly appreciated..

• Windows domain login to temporary user

  We have a Windows domain with about 60 user accounts. Sometimes when a user logs in to his computer (already his account is created and has files there) windows logs him to a temporary user, displaying his name and everything, but without his files and data. This problem is rare and is solved simply by logging out and logging in. I noticed that it occurs at a close timings; they all happen at the same day if they did. My question is why does that happen? I want to trace the problem because it is so annoying when it happens, and I can't find a relative event that may be causing it: no server is down when it happens, no system maintenance or anything. We're running Windows Server 2003 R2 Standard, SP2 in the Domain Controller (and the same for the additional DC). The machines where this problem happened before are running Windows XP and Windows 7.

• Building a Student Storage server

  I work for a school district. I've been put in charge of building a storage server for students. A place for them to work off of from school and home. My challenge is getting this to work from home. At school they login, authenticate, and they get a mapped drive to their folder on the server (S:\fileserver\studentname). My question is how can I make this available to students at home? The server is running Windows Server 2003 R1. I've got PHP, Apache, and MySQL working together. My idea is to write a script that will "crawl" through the directory containing all of the student folders, then create an instance of every file and folder in a MySQL DB. Create a login page that will use LDAP for authentication, and once they login to the server from home, they get a page with folders a files tied to their username. Has anyone out there ever put something like this together??

• exchange server 5.5 stops responding

  From last couple of weeks I am getting connection problem with my in-house exchange server 5.5 running on windows 2003. It has been working fine from last 5 years. but from few weeks it is loosing connection with other outlook clients. I have to restart my exchange server to make it work. This happens few times in a week. It looses connection somewhere between 7PM to 8AM as when I come in office. I find this problem, while it leave office it works fine. We have not installed any updates or software since last more than 2 years. What could be the reason for stop working?

• Can Google App users view Exchange users public calendars and contacts?

  My company currently uses MS Exchange 2003 for company email, contacts, and calendars. We have approximately 150 users. Construction industry. I would like to look into migrating from Exchange to Google Apps. It will be an easier sell to the powers that be if we can migrate certain smaller departments first successfully than an entire company move. I would like to first migrate our field superintendents who are usually out of the office working remotely. Approx 30 users. • [SOLVED]Can't enable mysql and mysqli extension in PHP [closed]

  I used to had my website hosted at a hosting company. But i decided to start my own webserver and in order to get phpBB, MediaWiki, etc. working i need PHP and MySQL. So after a bit of screwing around i could get those working but the MySQL and MySQLi extensions do not seem to work. When i use phpMyAdmin, phpBB, whatever it would say it is not installed correctly. I uncommented it in php.ini, i put my PHP folder in path, still not working. Please note i am not a PHP developer at all. Using: Windows Server 2003 Small Buisiness (too lazy to install Linux) Apache2 (not sure what version) PHP 5.2 (threaded, manually installed) MySQL 5.5.28 Thanks in advance, -Sydcul EDIT: Solved.   Hi, This is a fairly simple licensing question that has me confused. We have 3 servers: SERVER1,SERVER2,SERVER3 running on Windows Server 2003. We have 25 users. Do I need to buy 75 user licenses for the users to access all the servers or can I get by with 25? If I then upgrade 1 server to Windows Server 2008, do I need to buy a new set of user licenses. If I then upgrade the other 2, do I then need to buy 2 more sets of user licenses? Sorry for the confusion!

  HI, I have determine that my 2nd server which fail to start because of this entry in conf. Once I remove this entry, the server start up as normal. Alias /Reports/ "//abc/filedir/a/" <Directory "//abc/filedir/a/"> Order allow,deny Allow from all </Directory> I have a primary apache server which is also pointing to the folder with the same setting. I will like to know why the 2nd server failed to start, is it because the server one has locked the folder. //abc is my NAS server running on window 2003. Thanks

• How to configure permissions for win2008 task running as Network Service to stop/start a service on different system?

  Well... title says it all, actually. We've got a Scheduled Task set up on a windows server 2003 box running as the Network Service, and the batch file it runs will invoke "sc" to stop and then start a service on another windows box, however sc reports: [SC] OpenService FAILED 5: Access is denied. Running the same batch file via the windows explorer has no issues, and my user account is part of the Administrators group so I believe this is why there are no issues when I try it manually. Is this a permissions thing I enable for Network Service on the first server? Or do I enable permissions for Network Service somehow on the target server? This question (http://serverfault.com/questions/19382/why-sc-query-fails-from-one-machine-but-works-from-another) touches on something similar, but I'm looking for enabling the Network Service to access the service via the scheduled task.

• Hosting ESXI (free edition) [closed]

  We currently have one physical server running the free version of VMWare ESXi that virtualizes a Win SBS 2003 server and a Citrix server. We need to collocate the server and are investigating our options. Are there places that will host our virtual servers and save us the expense of shipping the physical server out for collocation. In my mind we'd copy the Vms to disk and ship them out. Does the fact that we're using the free version of ESXi create a barrier to this idea? Thanks for the help, I realize this is a stupid question.
