Calculating a Sample Covariance Matrix for Groups with plyr

I'm going to use the sample code from http://gettinggeneticsdone.blogspot.com/2009/11/split-apply-and-combine-in-r-using-plyr.html for this example. So, first, let's copy their example data: mydata=data.frame(X1=rnorm(30), X2=rnorm(30,5,2), SNP1=c(rep("AA",10), rep("Aa",10), rep("aa",10)), SNP2=c(rep("BB",10), rep("Bb",10), rep("bb",10))) I am going to ignore SNP2 in this example and just pretend the values in SNP1 denote group membership. So then, I may want some summary statistics about each group in SNP1: "AA", "Aa", "aa". Then if I want to calculate the means for each variable, it makes sense (modifying their code slightly) to use: > ddply(mydata, c("SNP1"), function(df) data.frame(meanX1=mean(df$X1), meanX2=mean(df$X2))) SNP1 meanX1 meanX2 1 aa 0.05178028 4.812302 2 Aa 0.30586206 4.820739 3 AA -0.26862500 4.856006 But what if I want the sample covariance matrix for each group? Ideally, I would like a 3D array, where the I have the covariance matrix for each group, and the third dimension denotes the corresponding group. As a side note, I found one method (http://www.mail-archive.com/[email protected]/msg86328.html) that provides the sample covariance matrix for each group, but the outputted object is bloated. Hard-coded 8191 10485 values in JavaScript rounding function

I've seen the following (bizarre) Javascript rounding function in some legacy code. After googling for it I can see that it crops up in a number of places online. However I can't work out why the hard-coded values 8191 and 10485 are present. Does anyone know if there's any sensible reason why these values are included? whats wrong in this LINQ synatx?

Hi, I am trying to convert a SQL query to LINQ. Somehow my count(distinct(x)) logic does not seem to be working correctly. The original SQL is quite efficient(or so i think), but the generated SQL is not even returning the correct result. I am trying to fix this LINQ to do what the original SQL is doing, AND in an efficient way as the original query is doing. SQL partial max

Struggling with the following SQL problem Assume a three dimensional table with entries (h,t,q) 1,A,20 1,A,10 1,B,5 2,A,10 2,B,3 2,B,8 3,C,50 4,A,10 etc. I would like to extract 1,30 2,11 3,50 etc. group by first element and then return the maximum q value of same type, i.e. for header number 2 there are 10 As and 11 Bs, so return 11 The "max" element (A in case 1, B in case 2 and C in case 3) is irrelevant, I just need to get out the header and that maximum value. This shouldnt be too tricky, but cant get it to work. Using MS Access, but can use SQL within.

Am I not allowed to pass values to the server from an OnClick event?

"[object Object]" passed instead of the actual object as parameter

I am using Heroku with a Ruby on Rails application, and running from Safari. I have the following Ajax call: $.ajax({ type : 'POST', url : '/test_page', data : {stuff: arr1}, dataType : 'script' }); arr1 is supposed to be an array of objects. There's a console.log right before that, and it is: [Object, Object, Object, Object, Object, ...] However, I got an error on the server side when I made this ajax call. The logs showed 2012-10-01T03:13:34+00:00 app[web.1]: Parameters: {"stuff"=>"[object Object]"} 2012-10-01T03:13:34+00:00 app[web.1]: WARNING: Can't verify CSRF token authenticity 2012-10-01T03:13:34+00:00 app[web.1]: NoMethodError (undefined method `to_hash' for "[object Object]":String): 2012-10-01T03:13:34+00:00 app[web.1]: Completed 500 Internal Server Error in 1ms I'm unable to replicate the error. It's really confusing to me - what would cause that string to sometimes be passed to the server instead of the object?

Of course, removing the method is not really an option right now, and the model contains several other methods as well so I assume if I just move the humanize method around, it will generate an error on the next one. I have the following problem that needs to be solved in a MySQL query: Fields info - textfield date1 - a date field date2 - a date field offset1 - a text field with a number in the first two positions, example "10-High" offset2 - a text field with a number in the first two positions, example "10-High" I need to sort the records by the calculated "sortvalue" based on the current date (today): If today=date2 then sortvalue=offset1*10+offset2*5+1000 else sortvalue=offset1*10+offset2*5 I have quite good understanding of basic SQL with joins etc, but this I am not even sure if its possible...if it helps I could perhaps live with a single formula giving the same sort of effect as the IFs do....ie. before date1 = low value, after date2 = high value... How to select DISTINCT rows without having the ORDER BY field selected

So I have two tables students (PK sID) and mentors (PK pID). This query SELECT s.pID FROM students s JOIN mentors m ON s.pID = m.pID WHERE m.tags LIKE '%a%' ORDER BY s.sID DESC; delivers this result pID ------------- 9 9 3 9 3 9 9 9 10 9 3 10 etc... I am trying to get a list of distinct mentor ID's with this ordering so I am looking for the SQL to produce pID ------------- 9 3 10 If I simply insert a DISTINCT in the SELECT clause I get an unexpected result of 10, 9, 3 (wrong order). Any help much appreciated.

CI pagination, POST problem

Okay, I am pretty new in CI and I am stuck on pagination. I am performing this pagination on a record set that is result of a query. Now everything seems to be working fine. But there’s some problem probably with the link. I am displaying 10 results per page. Now if the results are less than 10 then it’s fine. Or If I pull up the entire records in the table it works fine. But in case the result is more than 10 rows, then the first 10 is perfectly displayed, and when I click on the pagination link to get to the next page the next page displays the rest of the results from the query as well as, other records in the table. ??? I am confused.. Any help?? Please help with passing multidimensional arrays

Hi, I'm writing a simple test program to pass multidimensional arrays. I've been struggling to get the signature of the callee function. void p(int (*s)[100], int n) { ... } In the code I have: int s1[10][100], s2[10][1000]; p(s1, 100); This code appears to work, but it's not what I intended. I want to the function p to be oblivious whether the range of values is 100 or 1000, but it should know there are 10 pointers. I tried as a first attempt: void p(int (*s)[10], int n) // n = # elements in the range of the array and also: void p(int **s, int n) // n = # of elements in the range of the array But to no avail can I seem to get this correct. I don't want to hardcode the 100 or 1000, but instead pass it in, but there will always be 10 arrays. Obviously, I want to avoid having to declare the function: void p(int *s1, int *s2, int *s3, ..., int *s10, int n) FYI, I'm looking at the answers to a similar question but still confused.
