• Are there any vendors making a Gigabit Fiber solution for laptops?

  I'm trying to build a laptop system that can connect to just about any network you might come across in a large enterprise. I realize I can use a media converter to go from twisted pair to fiber but prefer to have a NIC instead of a converter. Is there a vendor out there that actually makes a gigabit ethernet fiber adapter for laptops? Edit: A year after I asked this question, apparently Allied Telesis came out with the AT-2872SX ExpressCard which has an SC connector for Gigabit Ethernet. See syneticon-dj's answer below.

• Windows 2008 server hosting in Europe

  Hi, I'm searching for a Windows 2008 server in Europe, preferably in Germany or UK or anything with good routing to Denmark (as its where the primary traffic will be generated from). The server will be used as web server (asp.net mvc, php), mail server and database server. We are running a few sites with around 200 concurrent users, which isn't much, but we intend to expand in the near future and the server should be easy to scale in form of adding more RAM and HDD space - if its possible. I think a virtual server may be the best choice - hyper-v or virtuozzo? - considering cost vs specs - but i'm open to suggestions. The max budget is in the range of $1000-1200/year. You guys have any suggestions? Let me know if you need further info.

• Problems with chip fan and CPU fan

  I have a five-year-old ASUS motherboard that has been working fine for me for years, until I attempted to power it on yesterday and got a CPU fan speed and chip fan speed warning. Cracking open the case and powering the computer on, I can see the chip fan working, but it appears to be hitting something as it makes a very loud buzzing noise. The CPU fan, meanwhile, starts up when I power on, but slows down and stops after a few seconds! How can I address these problems? Is there any way to fix these sort of fan speed issues without just replacing the fan (which in the case of the chip fan, probably means replacing the whole motherboard)?

• Quantifying the effects of partition mis-alignment

  I'm experiencing some significant performance issues on an NFS server. I've been reading up a bit on partition alignment, and I think I have my partitions mis-aligned. I can't find anything that tells me how to actually quantify the effects of mis-aligned partitions. Some of the general information I found suggests the performance penalty can be quite high (upwards of 60%) and others say it's negligible. What I want to do is determine if partition alignment is a factor in this server's performance problems or not; and if so, to what degree? So I'll put my info out here, and hopefully the community can confirm if my partitions are indeed mis-aligned, and if so, help me put a number to what the performance cost is. Server is a Dell R510 with dual E5620 CPUs and 8 GB RAM. There are eight 15k 2.5” 600 GB drives (Seagate ST3600057SS) configured in hardware RAID-6 with a single hot spare. RAID controller is a Dell PERC H700 w/512MB cache (Linux sees this as a LSI MegaSAS 9260). OS is CentOS 5.6, home directory partition is ext3, with options “rw,data=journal,usrquota”. • Server vendor that allows 3rd party disks

  As noted here, Dell is no longer allowing 3rd party disks to be used with their latest servers. As in, they don't work period. Which means that if you buy one of these boxes and want to upgrade the storage later, you have buy disks from Dell at significant premiums. Dell has just given me a very strong reason to take my server business elsewhere. My company buys (instead of leasing) our servers, and typically uses them for 5 years. I need to be able to upgrade/repurpose storage periodically, and do not want to be locked in to whatever Dell might have in stock, at inflated prices to boot. As you will see in the comments of the above link, it seems HP is doing the same thing. I am looking for a server vendor that offers 3-5 year warranty with same day/next day onsite service, and allows me to use 3rd party disks. Suggestions?

I have been trying everything that I could find on the internet but nothing seems to work, so I'm really desperate for help. One more thing: I don't know if this will help, but i'm from Malaysia. • Persuading openldap to work with SSL on Ubuntu with cn=config

  I simply cannot get this (TLS connection to openldap) to work and would appreciate some assistance. I have a working openldap server on ubuntu 10.04 LTS, it is configured to use cn=config and most of the info I can find for TLS seems to use the older slapd.conf file :-( I've been largely following the instructions here https://help.ubuntu.com/10.04/serverguide/C/openldap-server.html plus stuff I've read here and elsewhere - which of course could be part of the problem as I don't totally understand all of this yet! • Computer can't boot

  I have a 1 year old PC and the last weeks, when I press the ON button the PC doesn't power on ( Like I didn't press the ON button ). I have to plug and unplug a few times the power cord in order to make it work. At the start this happened once in 10 boots. Now it happens much more frequently to the point that when I press the power on button it never even opens if I don't do the cord switch thingy. Very rarely also, the PC shut downs for no reason and no warning, even when idle. The important fact to note here is, the green light on the motherboard is always on, even when the PC doesn't power on. What should I do? Is it a Power Supply failure or a motherboard? My power supply is a high end corsair model, AX850 and my motherboard a high end ASUS.

• Adding IP address to OpenVZ VPS (OpenVZ Web Panel)

  I apologise if I sound at all dumb. This is my first dedicated server having used a VPS for over a year and I'm trying to setup a VPS on this new server. I purchased a subnet from my hosting provider that I believe allows me 6 usable IP addresses: 177.xx.xxx.201 - 177.xx.xxx.206 The subnet address looks like this: 177.xx.xxx.200/29. I've gone on my server and added them like it said on a wiki like so: ip addr add 177.**.***.201/29 dev eth0 I done that for all six and now when I go to them in the browser they point to my server. The problem is, I'm using OpenVZ web panel to create VMs (http://code.google.com/p/ovz-web-panel/) so I created a VM and assigned one of those IPs to it. However when SSHing to that IP it SSH's to the dedicated server and not the VM. Am I missing something?

• Can i enlarge os c drive of my windows 8?

  Last year I got a new Western Digital WD Blue 500GB HDD to replace my old drive. The first thing I did was to install latest Windows 8. While installing Windows 8 I created 3 partitions, C drive for the OS and others for storage. The OS partition is 120GB (which at the time I thought would be plenty big) but I'm now realizing its too small! I wonder if it's possible to re-size HDD partition without reformatting and re-install my Windows 8. So that is my question, Can i enlarge os c drive of my windows 8 without having to re-format? I've used the Norton Partition Magic and Disk Management to make this happen but there doesn't seem to be any options to make it happen. Thanks for any help you guys can give regarding my question. I've worked hard to optimize my current install of Windows 8 and would hate to start all over again.

• Can I use a wireless-N laptop as an NAS for seamless and fast data transfer and access?

  I have a nice spare laptop (Dell 15R, one year old) that I was wondering if I could use as an NAS. The laptop has an E-Sata port, and I was wondering if I could set it up and plug in a few hard drives permanently (meaning I won't be unplugging it) to the eSata port and use the laptop as a wireless NAS to seamlessly and wirelessly store and access my files. • New graphics card (GTX 760) slowing down entire PC

  My new graphics card is making my PC totally unusable. It boots up really slowly, and when the windows screen comes on, the mouse lags really far behind. Nothing opens at a normal speed. However, when I put in my 5-year old graphics card, it all works fine. I'm currently using a Foxconn Renaissance LGA 1366 Intel X58 ATX Motherboard, Intel Motherboard Intel Core i7-950 Bloomfield 3.06GHz LGA 1366 130W Processor, and a EVGA SuperNOVA 850G2 80PLUS Gold Certified ATX12V/EPS12V 850W Power Supply . I know it can't be the power supply, because I just bought it today to try to fix the problem. I've also installed the newest version of BIOS available for my motherboard. I've also seen extreme variations in CPU while the new graphics card is in, and when the old graphics card is installed, it is much calmer. Any thoughts?

• pfSense + DDoS Protection

  I run a gaming community on a colo with a 100Mbps port. I want to buy a very cheap 35 dollar server with the same 100Mbps port, and run pfSense to use as a hardware firewall. I'm dealing with a bunch of 14 year old kids that have access to botnets, so it can become a bit necessary to get something like this. My overall question, is using pfSense on a cheap identical datacenter/port speed server worth it to actually block DDoS attacks? A bit more into detail since I assume you will ask this, the attacks we receive are normally around 1Gbps. We currently run CentOS using CSF Firewall, and even when using a software firewall, we block 500Mbps UDP floods, or just generic attacks pretty easily. Thanks, - Necro

• Large File Uploads? SWFUpload?

  So, we offer video services and have run into an issue with people uploaded large file sources. I realized that our developer was utilizing php HTTP uploads to handle this and that was causing the slow times & breakdowns. Now, they keep coming at me wanting to use SWFUpload, quoting it is utilized by YouTube, but I'm adamantly against it because -- well, flash. • windows 7 crash during hibernation

  At times, when I hibernate my Dell Latitude e6400 with Windows 7 (64 bit), the laptop screen goes black as it should, but then it takes several minutes before it powers down. Then, when I attempt to "resume," Windows boots up from a fresh startup, with all my work lost, and tells me that it's recovered from a serious error. What can I do to resolve this problem? Other background info: -I got a new hard drive with plenty of space about a year ago; I only use a small fraction of that space. This sometimes happens when I don't have any programs running at all. If it's relevant, I do have Dropbox and OneDrive running in the background, though. -The problem usually occurs when I hibernate just after I unplug from an external monitor to bring my laptop home, but I believe it happens at other times, too. • unable to install new versions of linux on my PC

  I have an MSI-RC410 motherboard with onboard ATI Radeon XPress 200 series Graphics card. I have used OpenSuse-11.0 on my PC for over an year. but when I tried to upgrade to OpenSuse-11.1, I managed to install it only to find that several features were missing. for example /dev/cdrom was missing. Also install DVD of Fedora 11 did not work. I have also tried Ubuntu-9.10 live cd. When I boot from the CD i get the initramfs command prompt. Still able to install old versions of these OSs. What is the reason for this behavior? Does it have to do anything with the new version of the linux kernel not being compatible with my hardware? What should i do to install new versions of Linux?

The development environment is working with a database in MySQL running on debian etch version mysql Ver 14.12 Distrib 5.0.32, for pc-linux-gnu (i486) using readline 5.2. The production environment is working on debian lenny with version mysql Ver 14.12 Distrib 5.0.51a, for debian-linux-gnu (i486) using readline 5.2. I was just timing some database access and what takes in the development environment 150 seconds, takes 300 in the production environment. I checked the /etc/mysql/my.cnf files on both systems and the only differences are # development bind-address = 10.168.1.82 log_bin = /var/log/mysql/mysql-bin.log # production bind-address = 127.0.0.1 myisam-recover = BACKUP #log_bin = /var/log/mysql/mysql-bin.log I dump a database from the production and load it into the development and with the same server everything takes half the time !!! What should I check?

• Getting GTalk and Alt-Tab to play nice

  I'm running GTalk on Windows 7, and it refuses to work properly with Alt-Tab. Let's say I've got 2 message windows open (msg1 and msg2) and the contact list, as well as Firefox. Alt-tab from Firefox to msg1 works, but now the contact list is the most recent thing in the alt-tab list (not Firefox as expected). Then there's the problem that I can't use alt-tab to select a specific message window, and when switching back to msg2 (showing msg2 in the alt-tab window) it might switch back and have focus on msg1. I found this thread complaining about the same problem, but it's over a year old, and I'm hoping some progress has been made.

  Possible Duplicate: How to disable Tomcat on linux? According to my server host, something called Tomcat is hogging all my resources and slowing down the server. As far as I'm aware I'm not using it as the only thing running on the server is Plesk and a few Wordpress installations. I'm a real dummy at using SSH, I can navigate to folders, change permissions and that's about it. We recently received 2 emails from companies (px-vps.org and one other) in China saying that another company was trying to steal/register our .com domain name in china (.cn). They then gave us a list of 15 domains from China to India that we should register through their company. Now they are saying we need to register for a 5 year minimum at $100 per domain. It's starting to sound like a $10,000 scam. We called 101domains and they said it would be $30 for the registration fee and $30 for the law firm in Shanghai. Who should I go through to avoid spending a lot of money and be sure we don't get ripped off in the process?

• Windows 8 scroll lag

  Don't have an issue with the desktop experience, but when it comes to the apps, scrolling in some of them is impossible to use correctly. Very laggy and jumpy, which is surprising because my computer has relatively high specs, only a year old. Scrolling using the manual scroll bar has no lag whatsoever it's simply whenever I use my touchpad. Maybe it's a touchpad issue? or more likely windows 8 as it seems fine in desktop view for scrolling? Any ideas where the problem may lie? Thanks

• IIS Logs not getting created

  Hi I have a site running on IIS 6. I have turned on logging on the website tab of IIS and specified a directory for it to write to. Set it to an hourly schedule. However no logs are ever created. Have reset iis. checked disk space and permissions on the directory it is writing to but no logs are ever created. I can see this did work once, as there are logs created in the system32/logfiles directory from about a year ago. Even if I specify that directory nothing new gets created This is on a hosted service What else can I check? Is there any place that errors would be written to that might give me a clue as to what is going on? Have tried event viewer but nothing untoward in there Would appreciate any pointers on this
