  I'm a C# programmer constrained to write VB.NET code. While exploring NHibernate further for my current client, I encountered FluentNHibernate, which I find real attractive. But now, I wonder how to "translate" this C# code for component mapping into VB.NET code: Component(x => x.Address, m => { m.Map(x => x.Number); m.Map(x => x.Street); m.Map(x => x.PostCode); }); I know from here: Component(Of Client)(Function(c) c.Address, ...) what I miss is how to continue with the brackets in VB.NET, since there's no Begin End keywords or so. EDIT 1: Following Mr. JaredPar instructions, I figured that his solution might work. If we take the time to read his answer, we may notice that we both don't know what the MType is within his solution. I might have found out that the MType is: FluentNHibernate.Mapping.ComponentPart(Of TComponent) Thus, TComponent is, from my understanding, an anonymous type that I shall parameter to use. From this point of view, since I wish to map the properties of my Address object, replacing TComponent in my help method signature seems not to work. Private Sub MapAdresseHelper(Of Adresse)(ByVal a As FluentNHibernate.Mapping.ComponentPart(Of Adresse)) a.Map(Function(m) m.Number) a.Map(Function(m) m.Street).Length(50) a.Map(Function(m) m.PostCode).Length(10) End Sub The error I get is that my Address class doesn't have a property member named Street, for instance. It sees my Address type, it recognizes it, but it seems buggy somehow. I guess VBNET is poorly designed for lambda expressions and is less evolved than C# (Sorry, a bit of frustration due to the constraint of working with it and not being capable of doing things VERY easily done in C#.)   I upgraded my Web API app to the funkelnagelneu versions using this guidance: http://www.asp.net/mvc/tutorials/mvc-5/how-to-upgrade-an-aspnet-mvc-4-and-web-api-project-to-aspnet-mvc-5-and-web-api-2 However, after going through the steps (it seems all this should be automated, anyway), I tried to run it and got, "A project with an Output Type of Class Library cannot be started directly" What in Sam Hills Brothers Coffee is going on here? Who said this was a class library? So I opened Project Properties, and changed it (it was marked as "Class Library" for some reason - it either wasn't yesterday, or was and worked fine) to an Output Type of "Windows Application" ("Console Application" and "Class Library" being the only other options). Now it won't compile, complaining: "*Program 'c:\Platypus_Server_WebAPI\PlatypusServerWebAPI\PlatypusServerWebAPI\obj\Debug\PlatypusServerWebAPI.exe' does not contain a static 'Main' method suitable for an entry point...*" How can I get my Web API app back up and running in view of this quandary? UPDATE Looking in packages.config, two entries seem chin-scratch-worthy: <package id="Microsoft.AspNet.Providers" version="1.2" targetFramework="net40" /> <package id="Microsoft.Web.Infrastructure" version="1.0.0.0" targetFramework="net40" /> All the others target net451. Could this be the problem? Should I remove these packages? UPDATE 2 I tried to uninstall the Microsoft.Web.Infrastructure package (its description leads me to believe I don't need it; also, it has no dependencies) via the NuGet package manager, but it tells me, "NuGet failed to install or uninstall the selected package in the following project(s). [mine]" UPDATE 3 I went through the steps in again, and found that I had missed one step. I had to change this entry in the Application web.config File : <dependentAssembly> <assemblyIdentity name="System.Web.Mvc" publicKeyToken="31bf3856ad364e35" /> <bindingRedirect oldVersion="1.0.0.0-5.0.0.0" newVersion="5.0.0.0" /> </dependentAssembly> (from "4.0.0.0" to "5.0.0.0") ...but I still get the same result - it rebuilds/compiles, but won't run, with "A project with an Output Type of Class Library cannot be started directly" UPDATE 4 Thinking about the err msg, that it can't directly open a class library, I thought, "Sure you can't/won't -- this is a web app, not a project. So I followed a hunch, closed the project, and reopened it as a website (instead of reopening a project). That has gotten me further, at least; now I see a YSOD: Could not load file or assembly 'System.Web.WebPages.Razor, Version=3.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=31bf3856ad364e35' or one of its dependencies. The system cannot find the file specified. UPDATE 5 Note: The project is now (after being opened as a web site) named "localhost_48614" And...there is no longer a "References" folder...?!?!? As to that YSOD I'm getting, the official instructions (http://www.asp.net/mvc/tutorials/mvc-5/how-to-upgrade-an-aspnet-mvc-4-and-web-api-project-to-aspnet-mvc-5-and-web-api-2) said to do this, and I quote: "Update all elements that contain “System.Web.WebPages.Razor” from version “2.0.0.0” to version“3.0.0.0”." UPDATE 6 When I select Tools Library Package Manager Manage NuGet Packages for Solution now, I get, "Operation failed. Unable to locate the solution directory. Please ensure that the solution has been saved." So I save it, and it saves it with this funky new name (C:\Users\clay\Documents\Visual Studio 2013\Projects\localhost_48614\localhost_48614.sln) I get the Yellow Strip of Enlightenment across the top of the NuGet Package Manager telling me, "Some NuGet packages are missing from this solution. Click to restore from your online package sources." I do (click the "Restore" button, that is), and it downloads the missing packages ... I end up with the 30 packages. I try to run the app/site again, and ... the erstwhile YSOD becomes a compilation error: The pre-application start initialization method Start on type System.Web.Mvc.PreApplicationStartCode threw an exception with the following error message: Could not load file or assembly 'System.Web.WebPages.Razor, Version=3.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=31bf3856ad364e35' or one of its dependencies. The system cannot find the file specified.. Argghhhh!!! (and it's not even talk-like-a-pirate day).

• What issues might I have in opening .NET 2.0 Projects in Visual Studio 2010?

  The small software team I work on recently got approved to upgrade to Visual Studio 2010 (we're currently using VS 2005). We have several ASP.NET 2.0 and WinForms (in .NET 2.0) projects in production. I've been tasked with downloading VS 2010 and seeing how well it plays with our current projects. What issues should I be aware of when targeting older applications in VS 2010? If I open a VS 2005 project in VS 2010, will it still place nicely when my teammate goes back to open the project in VS 2005? Will we have to upgrade projects to work in VS 2010 (assuming the projects themselves aren't upgraded to .NET 4)? Can I use VS 2010 to edit legacy VB6 apps (just kidding)? I'm excited to work with the newest software, but we're concerned about running into development snags on production applications that are already working just fine. NOTE: I started a bounty in hopes of getting a more detailed answer to this question. Perhaps the answer really is as simple as those already provided, but I'm interested in more feedback regarding our options to transition from using VS 2005 to VS 2010.

• Panning Image Using Javascript in ASP.Net Page Overflows Div

  I have an ASP.Net page that contains a <div> with an <img> tag within. The image is large so the <div> is set with a size of 500x500 pixels with overflow set to scroll. I'm attempting to add image panning using a click and drag on the image. However, every time I begin dragging the image escapes the boundary of the element and consumes the entire page. • Asp.net mvc application deployment / security issues

  I'll start with appologies; I wasn't sure if this was best posted here of Server Fault so if its in the wrong place then please move :-) Basic information I have written the first module of a new application at work. This is written using Visual Studio 2010, targetting .net 3.5 (at the moment) and asp.net mvc 2. This has been working fine during development running on the built in Development server from VS but however does not work once deployed to IIS 7/7.5. To deploy the application, I have built it in release mode and created a deployment package by right clicking on the project in the solution explorer (this will be done with an automated build in tfs once upgrade from the beta). This has then been imported into IIS on the server. The application is using windows/domain authentication. Issue #1 I can fire up internet explorer and browse to the application from a client computer as well as on a remote desktop connection. I can execute the code which reads/stores data in Session fine from the IE instance on the remote desktop but if I browse to it from the client pc it seems to lose the session state. I click on the form submit and the page refreshes and doesn't execute the required code. I've tried setting with; InProc, SQLServer and StateServer. but with no luck :-( Issue #2 As part of the application it views PDF and Tiff documents on the fly which are on a network share on the office network and creates thumbnails if the document hasn't been viewed before. This works if running on the machine the application is deployed to; however when browsing from a client pc I get an error saying: Access to the path '\\fileserver\folder\file.tif' is denied Description: An unhandled exception occurred during the execution of the current web request. Please review the stack trace for more information about the error and where it originated in the code. Exception Details: System.UnauthorizedAccessException: Access to the path '\\fileserver\folder\file.TIF' is denied. ASP.NET is not authorized to access the requested resource. Consider granting access rights to the resource to the ASP.NET request identity. ASP.NET has a base process identity (typically {MACHINE}\ASPNET on IIS 5 or Network Service on IIS 6) that is used if the application is not impersonating. If the application is impersonating via , the identity will be the anonymous user (typically IUSR_MACHINENAME) or the authenticated request user. As this is on a different server the user is not accessible. To get round this I have tried: 1 - setting the application pool to run as domain administrator (I know this is a security risk, but I'm just trying to get it to work at the moment!) 2 - to set the log on account for World Wide Web Publishing service to be the domain admin . When trying to restart the service I get ... Windows could not start the World Wide Web Publishing Service service on the Local Computer. Error 1079: The account specified for this service is different from the account specified fro the other services running in the same process. Any pointers/help would be much appriciated as I'm pulling my hair out (of what little I have left). Update I've been using this funky little tool I found - DelegConfig v2 beta (Delegation / Kerberos Configuration Tool). This has been really usefull. So I've got the accessing of the file share working (there is a test page which will read the files) so now I've just got the issue of passing through the users credentials through to the SQL Server (wans't my choice to do it this way!!) to execute the queries etc. but I can't get it to log on as the user. It tries to access it as "NT Authority\Network Service" which doesn't have a sql login (as should be the logged on user). My connection string is: <add name="User" connectionString="Data Source=.;Integrated Security=True" providerName="System.Data.SqlClient" /> No initial catalog is specified as the system is over multiple dbs (also wasn't my choice!!). I really appriciate all the help so far! :-) Any further hints?!

• Log a user in to an ASP.net application using Windows Authentication without using Windows Authentic

  I have an ASP.net application I'm developing authentication for. I am using an existing cookie-based log on system to log users in to the system. The application runs as an anonymous account and then checks the cookie when the user wants to do something restricted. This is working fine. However, there is one caveat: I've been told that for each page that connects to our SQL server, I need to make it so that the user connects using an Active Directory account. because the system I'm using is cookie based, the user isn't logged in to Active Directory. Therefore, I use impersonation to connect to the server as a specific account. However, the powers that be here don't like impersonation; they say that it clutters up the code. I agree, but I've found no way around this. It seems that the only way that a user can be logged in to an ASP.net application is by either connecting with Internet Explorer from a machine where the user is logged in with their Active Directory account or by typing an Active Directory username and password. Neither of these two are workable in my application. I think it would be nice if I could make it so that when a user logs in and receives the cookie (which actually comes from a separate log on application, by the way), there could be some code run which tells the application to perform all network operations as the user's Active Directory account, just as if they had typed an Active Directory username and password. It seems like this ought to be possible somehow, but the solution evades me. How can I make this work? Update To those who have responded so far, I apologize for the confusion I have caused. The responses I've received indicate that you've misunderstood the question, so please allow me to clarify. I have no control over the requirement that users must perform network operations (such as SQL queries) using Active Directory accounts. I've been told several times (online and in meat-space) that this is an unusual requirement and possibly bad practice. I also have no control over the requirement that users must log in using the existing cookie-based log on application. I understand that in an ideal MS ecosystem, I would simply dis-allow anonymous access in my IIS settings and users would log in using Windows Authentication. This is not the case. The current system is that as far as IIS is concerned, the user logs in anonymously (even though they supply credentials which result in the issuance of a cookie) and we must programmatically check the cookie to see if the user has access to any restricted resources. In times past, we have simply used a single SQL account to perform all queries. My direct supervisor (who has many years of experience with this sort of thing) wants to change this. He says that if each user has his own AD account to perform SQL queries, it gives us more of a trail to follow if someone tries to do something wrong. The closest thing I've managed to come up with is using WIF to give the user a claim to a specific Active Directory account, but I still have to use impersonation because even still, the ASP.net process presents anonymous credentials to the SQL server. It boils down to this: Can I log users in with Active Directory accounts in my ASP.net application without having the users manually enter their AD credentials? (Windows Authentication)

• Conflicts with jQuery and the ToolkitScirptManager?

  It just started experimenting with the ajax.net ToolkitScirptManager and it works fine but then I realized that it is breaking my ajax calls I'm doing using the jQuery library. I'm guessing that it is the issue with the $ symbol, does anyone have anythoughts on how to use both libraries. I don't want to use jquery's noconflict mode because we use other jquery plugins that I'm afraid won't work. Any thoughts?

• BAD DC transfering FSMO Roles to ADC

  I have a DC (FQDN:server.icmcpk.local) and an ADC (FQDN:file-server.icmcpk.local). Recently my DC is facing a bad sector problem so I changed the Operation Masters to file-server for all five roles. but when ever i turn off the OLD DC the file-server also stops wroking with AD and GPMC further i m also unable to join any other computer to this domain. For Test purpose i also added a new ADC (FQDN:wds-server.icmcpk.local) but no succes with the old DC off i had to turn the old DC on and then joined it. I m attaching the Dcdiags for all three servers. • Deleting files using .NET that were migrated from win2k3

  We recently migrated an ASP.NET website from Windows 2003 to Windows 2008 R2, by zipping up all the files and extracting them to the new site. Since migrating the web application is still able to upload and delete files (that are new), however, it's unable to delete files that were copied from the original Win 2k3 app. We're guessing it's a permissions problem because the error is: Access to the path 'E:.......PATH.....' is denied. We've been trying to match the permissions of a newly uploaded file to that of a migrated files. Newly uploaded files seem to get the APP POOL user as a permission and the OWNER. However, the original files didn't have this. Any help that anyone can be would be fantastic. Thanks,

• Custom app_offline.htm file during publish

  When I publish my ASP.NET MVC application it generates a app_offline.htm file to take the site offline while it updates the website and then deletes the file once the publish is successful. This is cool and I really like the idea, but I want to create my own custom app_offline.htm file that the publish action is aware of and put it somewhere where it doesn't effect my development site - i.e. it doesn't sit in the root of my development site rendering it offline all the time. InheritInChildApplications="false"> <system.web>...</system.web> </location> But VS 2010 Web Developer Express keeps saying "The 'InheritInChildApplications' attribute is not allowed" and when I run my web app there's an error: "HTTP Error 500.19 - Internal Server Error The requested page cannot be accessed because the related configuration data for the page is invalid." Config Error Unrecognized attribute 'InheritInChildApplications'. I've seen some smartguys all over the Internet discussing this and how it is working for them but there's much larger number of people here at SO and other places that did not get this to work.   I'm using ASP.NET Membership and Form Authentication and before redirecting to the returnURL I wanted to validate it. For those unfamiliar with the workflow, basically if you request a page that requires that you are authenticated, you are redirected to a login page. In the URL string you'll see a parameter called returnURL, e.g. http://example.com/login.aspx?ReturnUrl=%2fprotected%2fdefault.aspx Whether you use this in a redirect such as Response.Redirect(returnURL) or indirectly through the FormsAuthentication.RedirectFromLoginPage method, it passes without validating returnURL. FormsAuthentication.RedirectFromLoginPage does have a security check that it is isn't leaving the domain, but that still doesn't stop someone from putting enough random characters to cause an error. I tried using System.IO.File.Exists(Server.MapPath(returnURL)) but given enough illegal characters it cause Server.MapPath to error. Note: URLEncoding doesn't work because we are not cleaning a parameter, but the primary URL. Any other suggestions for validating or cleaning the returnURL value?

• How to update model?

  Hi, guys. I have an ASP.NET MVC page where the model is being edited. On each action executing I have a new controller, so I don't get an updated model. I'm saving a model instance into Session["MyModelKey"]. But every time an action is executed, I have unmodified instance there even if I have changed values in textboxes which were created like this: @Html.LabelFor(model = model.EMail) @Html.TextBoxFor(model = model.EMail) @Html.LabelFor(model = model.Country) @Html.TextBoxFor(model = model.Country) @Html.ActionLink("MyAction", "MyController") Controller: public class MyController : Controller { public ActionResult MyAction() { //Every time this action is executed - I have a new controller instance //So I have null in View.Model //I get Session["MyModelKey"] here, //But the model instance properties are not updated //even though I have updated E-mail and Country properties of the model in the UI } } So, how can I get an updated model? • serverside controls vs html controls from AJAX point of view

  hi, i know this question have been mentioned alot here but mine is a little more updated, now with ASP.net 4 and new Ajax client templating plus JASON services. so if i got all these new capabilities will i really need server side controls as long as i can bind on client side, create data-views on client side heck i can even use data-context and apply CRUD operations on clients side. so i actually i wont need button_click server side event or what so ever... i am asking this because i own some commercial Controls like Telerik and Component art and they both offer client side operations ow but still i am confused as to my knowledge creating these controls will still have to go through Page Life cycle please advise me.
