• Ideas for OpenSource CMS in ASP.NET MVC

  I am in the process of collecting ideas for building an opensource CMS based on ASP.net framework. I have choosen ASP.NET MVC with Jquery as the tool to develop this. I have made this as community wiki. Background: Most of the good CMS that is available is built on PHP, though off late CMS built on ASP.net framework seems to be cropping up. I would like to collect ideas/suggestion/expectations from an opensource CMS system for ASP.net platform. I am looking for expectation from technology and features that you wish could find in a modern CMS and any other thoughts/ideas that comes to your mind. Your input would be of great help in this direction. Meanwhile I am also reviewing many opensource CMS system built on ASP.net as well as MS Office Sharepoint to get ideas and I would update my findings here for your reference. • Arguments of using WCF/OData as access layer instead of EF/L2S/nHibernate directly

  We develop mostly low traffic but highly specialized web applications. Normally we use L2S, EF or nHibernate as access layer and then throws Asp.Net MVC to it and in which for normal crud operations we query the ISession/DataContext directly but for more advanced functions/side effects we put it in a some kind of service layer. Now, i was think about publishing the data through OData (WCF Data Service) and query that from the controllers (or even from jQuery when the a good template engine shows up) and publish the service operations through a WCF service (or as custom methods on the WCF Data Service?). What advantages/disadvantages does this architecture poses? Do I gain something except higher complexity and latency? Better separations of concerns (or is it just a illusion)?

• Jquery Uploadify checkscript

  I am trying to implement the checkscript feature of uploadify in an asp.net mvc view but i can't determine what the key is i should be using on the controller side. Below is the php script but i am not very familiar with php and can't determine what php is scraping out of the httprequest. Has anyone implemented this? • jQuery post to another controller

  If I have a Controller called "HomeController" and I'm on the Index page of that controller, how can I do a jQuery Ajax post to another controller. I tried the below, $.post("/DetailedQuote/jQueryGetDetailedQuote", { productCode: "LPJ" }, function(newHTML) { alert(88); }); I have a DetailedQuoteController. I have also tried; post("DetailedQuote/ post("DetailedQuote.aspx/ post("/DetailedQuote.aspx/ post("/DetailedQuoteController/ post("DetailedQuoteController/ post("DetailedQuoteController.aspx/ post("/DetailedQuoteController.aspx/ And still no joy. I should also mention that this is running a Hybrid WebForms and MVC site on IIS 6.

• Ajaxing a link in a table

  I have a table of results in an ASP.Net MVC page where the last column is an View Details link. I want to have the user click the View Details link and an AJAX method be called to open the results in floating dialog. What I am struggling with is how to link the AJAX call to the link in the results table. I was using a link which embedded the ~/ControllerName/ViewDetails/InstanceId link directly in it. Clicking it took the user to a new page and it is this behaviour I want to replace with an AJAX call and a dialog window. Now I want to attach a jQuery handler to the link to trigger the AJAX call and I can't see how to do this other than write an jQuery handler for each row in the results table. There must be a way to mark the link as an ViewDetails link (using a class?) and attach the jQuery click handler to all instances of type class ViewDetails.

• Bulk email sender and list management API

  I'm looking for a way to programmatically manage email lists and send large numbers of emails to these lists. The general idea would be similar to how social networking sites send email notifications when a friend posts new content. Since a user could have tens of thousands of followers, it doesn't seem realistic to send these directly from my application so I'm curious if there's a good way to handle this through a service provider. My company is using Google apps but I'm not an expert on their API. Our environment is ASP.NET MVC. Any advice is most appreciated!

• Problem with importing an mdf created with SQL Server Express 2008 into SQL Server 2005

  The question is probably extremely easy to resolve, but I need to resolve it because I need to carry on with my project. I am using SQL Server Express 2008 at home, and I've been working on an ASP.NET MVC app that stores my DB in an mdf file in the project's folder. The problem is that the SQL Server in the Uni labs is SQL Server 2005, and when I try to open the mdf file with the VS Server Explorer,It says that the version of the mdf file is more than the server can accept. The only option that comes to my mind is exporting the DB as an sql file, just like I've done it thousand times with phpmyadmin. the thing is that the SQL Management Studio Express is not the most usable tool in the world, and for some strange reason all the articles I could find in Google were irrelevant. Please, help.

• asp.net mvc custom membership provider - define application

  I created custom membership provider for asp.net mvc applications and it all works fine except one thing: when logged in to my application, I am also logged in to all other asp.net mvc applications that I run using Visual Studio. I suppose this data is being pulled from cache because when I logout and try to login again in other application, I'm being rejected. • How do you install Castle Windsor IOC?

  I'm currently reading Pro ASP.NET MVC Framework by Sanderson. In the book he recommends setting up IoC using Castle Windsor, and he points out that the download automatically installs it and registers the Castle DLLs in the GAC. Well, at this point in time (5/4/2010), the Castle Project no longer has a downloadable installer that sets this up. Its all broken out into their individual subprojects with the raw files contained in zipped folders. Sadly there's no installation documentation that I can find about how to set it up. Being the noob that I am, I'm stuck and now forced to ask #1 where should castle windsor live on my hard drive? #2 how do I manually register the dlls properly? • Dependency Injection with Custom Membership Provider

  I have an ASP.NET MVC web application that implements a custom membership provider. The custom membership provider takes a UserRepository to its constructor that provides an interface between the membership provider and NHibernate. The UserRepository is provided by the Ninject IoC container. Obviously, however, this doesn't work when the provider is instantiated by .NET: the parameterless constructor does not have a UserRepository and cannot create one (the UserRepository requires an NHibernate session be passed to its constructor), which then means that the provider cannot access its data store. How can I resolve my object dependency? It's probably worth noting that this is an existing application that has been retrofitted with Ninject. Previously I used parameterless constructors that were able to create their required dependencies in conjunction with the parametered constructors to assist unit testing. Any thoughts, or have I built myself into a corner here?

• How to update model?

  Hi, guys. I have an ASP.NET MVC page where the model is being edited. On each action executing I have a new controller, so I don't get an updated model. I'm saving a model instance into Session["MyModelKey"]. But every time an action is executed, I have unmodified instance there even if I have changed values in textboxes which were created like this: @Html.LabelFor(model = model.EMail) @Html.TextBoxFor(model = model.EMail) @Html.LabelFor(model = model.Country) @Html.TextBoxFor(model = model.Country) @Html.ActionLink("MyAction", "MyController") Controller: public class MyController : Controller { public ActionResult MyAction() { //Every time this action is executed - I have a new controller instance //So I have null in View.Model //I get Session["MyModelKey"] here, //But the model instance properties are not updated //even though I have updated E-mail and Country properties of the model in the UI } } So, how can I get an updated model? • Model availability inside ActionFilter

  I have created a new ActionFilter for an ASP.NET MVC application that I'm creating. I have an action which accepts an Http Post and the argument of the action method accepts an object, for which I have created and registered a custom model binder. I noticed that inside the IActionFilter.OnActionExecuting the value for filterContext.Controller.ViewData.Model is always null despite the fact that it looks like the model binder is always invoked before the action filter OnActionExecuting method. In contrast to this inside the IActionFilter.OnActionExecuted method of the same action filter the value for filterContext.Controller.ViewData.Model is not null. Do you guys know if this is by design or a bug? If by design are their any links which describe why this is? Thanks.

  I've been doing quite large application recently with Java - Swing. Now I'd like to move to web. Basically - I am not Microsoft guy, Java is fine with me. I've checked some basics of Java EE framework and decided that my choice will be Spring. I already am familiar with JDBC. Learning Spring is one thing, but working just with GUIs (C++ and Java) means that I have very poor knowledge of web development. Before I start reading tutorials of Spring MVC, what should I know to develop web solutions? I am mainly interested "how to" with graphics ... start from scratch or some nice IDE RAD-like development ? I kind of like f.e. Silverlight and integrating to web or asp.net win forms - allows us 'GUI' people develop faster. So can you please give me some useful advices? Thanx

• Control JSON Serialization format of a custom type in .NET

  I have a PhoneNumber class that stores a normalized string, and I've defined implicit operators for string <- Phone to simplify treatment of the PhoneNumber as a string. I've also overridden the ToString() method to always return the cleaned version of the number (no hyphens or parentheses or spaces). In any MVC.NET code where I explicitly display the number, I can explicitly call phone.Format(). The problem here is serializing an entity that has a PhoneNumber to JSON; JavaScriptSerializer serializes it as [object Object]. I want to serialize it as a string in (555)555-5555 format. I've looked at writing a custom JavaScriptConverter, but JavaScriptConverter.Serialize() method returns a dictionary of name-value pairs. I don't want PhoneNumber to be treated as an object with fields, I want to simply serialize it as a string.

• Implementing google dashboard type interface in asp.net

  I'm looking at implementing a Google IG type dashboard in a .net app. There are a number of options I've found to do this, and i'm trying to establish what is going to be the best to use, in terms of speed, versatility etc. So far the options I am looking at are either to use asp.net webparts and .net Ajax, this would make it quicker to build, but I'm concerned this is going to make the application bulky and slow, or using JQuery, and either .net MVC or Webforms, to custom build an interface. Does anyone have any thoughts on what the best option may be, or any options I may have missed? All I want to do here is to allow users to customise a dashboard with a number of components (which will be user controls). I do also have access to Telerik controls, but I'm not sure if they would be any use here.

• How can I use a custom ValidationAttribute to ensure two properties match?

  We're using xVal and the standard DataAnnotationsValidationRunner described here to collect validation errors from our domain objects and view models in ASP.NET MVC. I'd like to have a way to have that validation runner identify when two properties don't match through the use of custom DataAnnotations. Right now I'm forced into doing it outside of the runner, this way: if (!(model.FieldOne == model.FieldTwo)) errors.Add(new ErrorInfo("FieldTwo", "FieldOne must match FieldTwo", model.FieldTwo)); My question is: can this be done using property-level validation attributes, or am I forced into using class-level attributes (in which case, I'd have to modify the runner...and my follow up question would be how best to retrieve them in that case).   hi, I have an ASP.NET MVC application. In this after user get Sign in .We set the a cookie for the user who logged in using FormsAuthentication.SetAuthCookie(userName, false). In other page we get the Cookies using the FormsAuthentication.GetAuthCookie(userName]) . This cookie values as string is then set in the Response.Cookies["username"].Value = cookiesvalue . We have .aspx page in the same application that downloads silverlight application .Silverlight reads the cookies using the code string[] cookies = HtmlPage.Document.Cookies.Split(';'); The problem is that once session expires in the application,silverlight cannot read the cookie value. After the session expires we again set the cookies in headers using the Response.Cookies["username"].Value = cookiesvalue . But still silverlight application cannot read this cookie . • What components of your site do you typically "offload" or embed?

  Here's what I mean. In developing my ASP.NET MVC based site, I've managed to offload a great deal of the static file hosting and even some of the "work". Like so: jQuery for my javascript framework. Instead of hosting it on my site, I use the Google CDN Google maps, obviously "offloaded" - no real work being performed on my server - Google hosted jQueryUI framework - Google CDN jQueryUI CSS framework - Google CDN jQueryUI CSS framework themes - Google CDN So what I'm asking is this, other than what I've got listed... What aspects of your sites have you been able to offload, or embed, from outside services? Couple others that come to mind... OpenAuth - take much of the authentication process work off your site Google Wave - when it comes out, take communication work off of your site

• Specify Action on sub-controller when using Html.RenderAction

  I have a UserControl that I call with Html.RenderAction(...), so far so good.. Then I want to specify in the user control, which action should be used Html.BeginForm("DeleteComment", "Comments", new { Id = "frmDelete" }, FormMethod.Post);%> <%= Html.SubmitImage( "imgbtnDelete", "/image.png", new { ... })%> <% Html.EndForm(); %> And therein lies my problem; this calls the user control's controller/action. What I want to happen is to call the pages action first and then be able to specify what action to call on the user control's controller. Is this possible?? Thanks from an MVC noob

• Saving selected rows in a jqGrid while paging

  I have a jqGrid with which users will select records. A large number of records could be selected across multiple pages. The selected rows seem to get cleared out when the user pages through the data. Is it up to the developer to manually track the selected rows in an array? I'm fine doing this, but I'm not sure what the best way is. I'm not sure I want to be splicing an array whenever any number of records are selected as that seems like it could really slow things down. My end goal is to have a jQueryUI dialog that, when closed, while store all the selected rows so I can post it to the server. Insight, questions, comments; all are appreciated! • Multi tenancy with Unity

  Hi everybody! I'm trying to implement this scenario using Unity and i can't figure out how this could be done: the same web application (ASP.NET MVC) should be made accessible to more than one client (multi-tenant). The URL of the web site will differentiate the client (this i know how to get). So getting the URL one could set the (let's call it) IConnectionStringProvider parameter (which will be afterward injected into IRepository and so on). Through which mechanism (using Unity) do i set the IConnectionStringProvider parameter at run time? I have done this in the past using Windsor & IHandlerSelector (see this) but it's my first attempt using Unity. Any help is deeply appreciated! Thanks in advance
