• Failure to Boot Windows 7 after Ubuntu install

  My computer is a (brand new) PC notebook, without a CD drive running Windows 7. I followed this page to install from USB: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/FromUSBStickQuick The installation went well and i am using Ubuntu now (v. 12.04 i believe) I want to be able to dual boot Ubuntu and Win7 The problem is that the disc partitioning during the Linux install caused a problem with Windows, caused some problem with windows, and windows can no longer boot when i choose it at the GNU GRUB screen. When i restart my computer i can successfully boot Linux, but not Windows 7. At the GRUB screen - if i run Win7 normally, it freezes, shows a blue screen, and returns back to GRUB - if i run Win7 recovery, i dont know how to access the files that i need in order to run windows again, so nothing helpful happens. Can you please tell me what i would need to do(or link a guide) in order to run Windows again. (Windows and Linux is preferable, but if thats impossible going back to only Windows will help too) Im guessing the easiest thing to do is just to reinstall both OS, or is there anyway to undo the partition i made during the install? • Ubuntu Slow - What architecture does the Windows Installer install?

  I feel absolutely limited by using Windows, and I need to switch to a Unix environment. I once installed Red Hat on my lappie (screen + external monitor setup; 4GB ram; x64; runs fast) and it worked fine, but I saw that the computer cluster that is the birthplace of my unix knowledge switched to Ubuntu, so naturally I follow. To the point. When I installed Ubuntu onto my machine via the Windows Installer, it ran quite slow. Opening Firefox takes about 8-9 seconds, it freezes up often, unable to handle its own background processes. I saw in a thread that, perhaps, it is running slow because the Windows Installer is installing an x64 version. Of course, my computer has had no performance issues in the past(except that time with the trojans but you know, know one is perfect ;) ) Anyways, I uninstalled Ubuntu, freeing up the max allocated memory it took up, and continue to be sad, trapped in my MS world with only a buggy Cygwin, any assistance is greatly appreciated! :) Thanks ~Ben

• Is it a must to focus on one specific IT subject to be succesful?

  Lately I'm deeply disturbed by the thought that I'm still not devoted to one specific IT subject after so many years of doing it as a hobby. I've been in so many different IT related hobbies since I was 12. I have spent 8 years and now I'm 20 and just finished freshman year at Computer Eng. Just to summarize the variety: 3D Game Dev. and Modelling (Acknex, Irrlicht , OpenGL, GLES, 3DSMAX) Mobile App.Dev (Symbian, Maemo, Android) Electronis (Arduino) Web.Dev. (PHP, MYSQL, Javascript, Jquery, RaphaelJS, Canvas, Flash etc.) Computer Vision (OpenCV) I need to start making money. But I'm having problem to pick the correct IT business to do so. Is it a problem to have interest in so many different IT subjects?(in business world) I'm having a lot of fun by doing all those stuff from time to time. Other than making money I also noticed that having so many different interests is lowering my productivity. But I'm still having difficulty to pick one. I'm feeling close to all those subjects (time to time).

• linux recommendations for older pc

  Hi, I'm new to Linux and I am interested in installing the OS on an older computer I have. I want to setup a webserver and install php, perl. My pc is an older HP Pavillion a255c, Intel Pentium 4 with 512ram. I will probably add some more memory later. This pc is more like a sandbox than anything, but would like to get quickly started with the OS. Is there a particular flavor of linux I would need to download based on my older computer? Any recommendations? I was thinking about Ubuntu but not sure what version to go with. Thanks for your help.

• Can't connect to IIS7 on one of my machines

  Hello, I have 2 computers, both running Win7 Professional x64. Computer "A" (192.168.0.10) is my work machine, it contains my tools etc. Computer "B" (192.168.0.15) is supposed to be my build server / web server for my projects I've installed IIS on "B", and installed IIS7 remote manager on "A". I'm trying to connect from A's IIS7 Manager to B's IIS but I fail. I have little knowledge of IIS, and I feel that's the main reason. I can ping B from A and get positive results so the machines do see each other. A and B are in the same workgroup but not in a domain (if that matters) - they're in my home network. What do I need to do to "see" B's IIS?

  Question: Can the major TV producer's internet TV systems access network resource? Info: I'm looking for large TV's right now for my company to set up in conference rooms. We want the ability to load presentations with out having to have a computer to do so. Our hope is to put things on to network drives and access and display them from there. I've heard that LG's can do this if you convert the power point file in to a show format. that's fine. I just need to get this information to the TV with out the computer attached. Can anyone tell me if companies like LG, Vizio, Sony, Samsung, etc. have TV's that are capable of doing this? Thanks ~n

• Windows 7: Server disappearing from Network window

  I am running a small (three computer) network on a Windows Server 2003 domain. All of the computers were just upgraded to Windows 7. Since the upgrade, the icon for the domain server periodically disappears from the Network window on all three computers. It doesn't happen at the same time on all computers--the icon typically disappears from one machine, but not the others. And it's not always the same computer. The network connection is still there--I can type \\myserver and get to the network shares. It's simply the icon that's disappearing. Has this happened to anyone else? Any suggestions for a fix? • Windows 7 unload driver/disconnect usb before restart

  In xp, my Tascam US 122 usb audio interface works fine. On my windows 7 computer the device works, however when i restart/shutdown it hangs at the "shutting down" screen forever. If the usb cable is removed prior to initiating restart/shutdown then everything goes fine, the computer restarts as normal. This is a known problem, running any other driver in compatibility mode doesnt fix the problem. Is there a method I can use to unload the device/drivers so that I dont have to reach round physically and disconnect the cable. Somebody suggested a spdt switch on the cable itself, but I am looking for a simpler method. Surely I can automate the unloading of the device through a script or such? Any ideas are greatly welcomed thanks

• Port forwarding not working?

  I'm trying to set up an Apache Server to be accessed publicly. I'm using a Netgear R4500 router hooked up to a Motorola SB6121 modem. I can access my server on my computer by typing in my IP address. After following the instructions to forward port 80 so I can access the server from other computers, it does not work (see image). I get "This webpage is not available". I am forwarding to the IP address of my computer. Using this Network Port Scanner Tool, it says "80/tcp filtered http", which, as I understand it, means forwarding did not work correctly. In my Apache httpd file, I have: ServerName 192.168.1.13:80 and Listen 192.168.1.13:80 Anyone know what's wrong or have something I can try? click to enlarge

  My family is looking for a programming/computer science tutor. Personally, I want to learn Java or some other brand of web programming. I am best described as a PC "power user." I have never programmed in the past and would like a good jump start. I am a very quick learner and do not expect the tutor to have to teach me the ultra basic stuff that I can learn myself. My son also needs a programming tutor. He just got into Carnegie Mellon as a computer science major. Having done only robotics and mathematics in the past he is very nervous that he does not have the same level of knowledge as his future classmates. I need some help coming up with a list of questions to ask potential tutors and some criteria to judge them by. Thanks! Edit: So far I have come up with just the obvious... Where did you receive your education? What languages are you familiar with? How long have you been tutoring? What made you decide to become a tutor? What software projects have you worked on? • PC shut downs automatically after a second

  I have this not-so-old computer that's not being used for a year or so. Specs: Motherboard: ASUS PN5-E SLI CPU: Intel Core2Duo E4300 RAM:2x2GB SuperTalent DDR2-800 VGA: Zogis GeForce 7950GT PSU: Vitsuba San-55-S 550w HD: No hardrives yet When I power on the computer, everything seem to start, but right away the whole system shuts down. I've removed and changed the RAM sticks, take out the VGA, everything I could think of. So what could it be causing this? The PSU? The motherboard is dead? The CPU? Any help to isolate the problem will be useful. Thanks PS: Please don't close the question, this could be helpful to anybody having a similar problem, even with different hardware.

• Error when adding to the domain : the specified server cannot perform the requested operation

  When we add computers to the domain in Windows 7, we get the error: Changing the Primary Domain DNS name of this computer to "" failed. The name will remain "domain.com". The error was: The specified server cannot perform the requested operation. This happens on multiple computers and retrying yields the same result. Despite the error, the computer is still able to login to the domain ok. The DCs are windows 2003. Has anyone found a way to get rid of this error? Any help is appreciated.

• Restart and/or graphics problem in Ubuntu 12.04

  I having been using 12.04 for a couple of months now, with v. little problems. The other day I restarted my computer, and though I think it rebooted, the screen would be black. I could not even get a visual from a live cd. Finally, I was able to get it to load, but the resolution has been completely off. The computer thinks I have a laptop screen, when I actually have a ViewSonic VP2330wb, and it detects only two resolutions. And still, I have a problem with rebooting. If the screen locks after I leave it for a while, I can't get a visual back, and then when I force a shutdown, it takes 3 times for me to get a grub screen. Then I have to boot in recovery mode, and then finally in normal mode, but the screen is still always off. • crippling repeating "pciehp card not present" notifications

  When using ubuntu (12.04, both installed and on a live usb) I get a lot of these messages: pciehp 0000:00:1c.5:pcie04: Card not present on Slot(37) pciehp 0000:00:1c.5:pcie04: Card present on Slot(37) And with a lot I mean about 20 per second. This has a crippling effect, and I would like to get rid of it :) The computer is a packard bell easynote BG48-U-100 DC. I tip I picked up from some fedora/redhat error here was to look at lspci -vnn. I have pasted the part about "00:1c.5" here: http://pastebin.com/0sfsiqW2 For what good it may do, here is the lsmod of my machine: http://pastebin.com/DQZy1kAL From that first pastebin I think to conclude that it has to do with the module shpchp, which seems to me (aka: google) to have something to do with ACPI. That's as far as I've come in disecting this. Can anyone help me along further? What can I do, check etc? I did see this topic but my intentions are not to surpress the error message: I know how to do this (from that topic ;) ), but I'm looking for a real sollution. Finding the problem on the internet does suspect me to believe it is neither an ubuntu specific nor a packard-bell specific problem.If you google the problem it seems that is present on several other distribution/hardware combo's as well, and it looks like the advice is to remove one of the drivers? I have no clue as to which driver I should look at and and what would be the effect of just removing it. I have seen this topic which is old-ish, but describes my problem and is about a similar computer. The solution in this topic was to compile a new kernel using a spanish guide, which seems a bit extreme to me, so I'm kinda hoping for a better solution than that.

  I am a first time builder and while I have the basic understanding of how to put a computer together, one final thing eludes me. What are the requirements for instaling 2 or more graphics cards on a computer? Example: EVGA 015-P3-1589-AR GeForce GTX 580 (Fermi) FTW Hydro Copper 2 1536MB 384-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Support Video Card ECS NGTX580-1536PI-F GeForce GTX 580 (Fermi) 1536MB 384-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Support Video Card I am not planning on buying either of these cards in the near future. I simply am using them as an example because of the number of differences. As I understand it these two cards will work together (given the proper motherboard) because the only thing that matters is that they are both GeForce GTX 580. Is my assumption correct? If not, why?

• GRUB2 not working after installing xubuntu 14.04

  I have a vaio laptop and it used to have installed windows 8 and Xubuntu 13.04 in dual boot, everything was working fine. I decided to update my version of xubuntu 14.04 LTS mainly because the support for 13.04 is finished and LTS version have 3 years of support. What I did was to format the partition where xubuntu 13.04 was installed and install 14.04 in that formated partition. When I restarted my computer willing to start using my new system I got the following message: error: symbol 'grub_term_highlight_color' not found and I was not able to enter any OS. I tried boot-repair from live USB more than two times and it did not fix the problem. I tried to enter to my computer using super GRUB2 disk, however it does not apperar to work with UEFI active (besides super grub2 disk says it can) I only get the message "no operating system found". If I boot super grub2 disk with UEFI disabled, super grub2 disk can not detect any OS,I also tried Rescatux distro, however, as of super grub2 disk, rescatux cannot enter when UEFI is active. I tried boot-repair with the option of "restore EFI backups", after that I was able to boot on windows, but no grub menu appeared. • How can I keep gnu screen from becoming unresponsive after losing my SSH connection?

  I use a VPN tunnel to connect to my work network and then SSH to connect to my work PC running cygwin. Once logged in I can attach to a screen session and everything works great. Now, after a while, I walk away from my computer and sooner or later, the VPN tunnel times out. The SSH connection on each end eventually times out and then I eventually come back to my computer to do some work. Theoretically, this should be a simple matter of just restarting the VPN, reconnecting via SSH, and then running "screen -r -d". However apparently when the sshd daemon times out on the cygwin PC, it leaves the screen session in some kind of hung state. I can reproduce a similar hung state by clicking the close box on a cygwin bash shell window while it's running a screen session. Is there any way to get the screen session to recover once this has happened, so that I don't lose anything?

• Dell Multi-Monitor Hub: true DisplayPort splitting?

  In my search for a new display, I came across the Dell Multi-Monitor Hub MMH11, which seemed to be an alternative to my search for daisy-chainable DisplayPort displays. However, before I cave and spend $179 on this device, I am wondering if this will be similar to other splitting devices where it appears to the computer as one big monitor and the device does the splitting (which I don't want). Or, does this use the packet-based nature of DisplayPort to present two/three separate displays to the computer? Also, would this device work on my MacBook Pro? (I know the Dell site says it's for Windows, but it also says that no driver installation is required. I'd assume since the MBP supports DP 1.2 it would work, but it's better to ask). Thanks!

• What happens when you add a Graphics card to a i7 with build in graphics (e.g. HD 4000)

  I'm thinking of upgrading my computer from an AMD Phenom II X4 955BE with a AMD Radeon HD 6800 Graphics card (not integrated) to using a Intel Core i7 3770. As I have no knowledge of integrated graphics, my question is, what happens to the computing power when not using the HD4000 integrated graphics of the CPU (does it mean the CPU will run faster then it would if I relied on it?) Also what is better the CPUs inbuilt HD4000 or my Radeon Graphics card? I am mostly interested in terms of content creation: Using Adobe After Effects, 3D Rendering etc. Not too bothered about gaming performance. I will be using the spare parts of this build and older systems to make a second computer for network renders so what will be the advantages of keeping the Radeon with the current system for that?

• Is there a specific name for the ".\" (dot-slash) shorthand used to log onto a Windows machine?

  I guess the title just about says it all. And yes, .\, not that obsolete \. thing. :) For those who don't know, .\ is a shorthand way of saying "this computer" in Windows at a logon screen, which comes in very handy when you don't know or care about the local computer name but need to authenticate against it anyway, such as through RDP or scripting against a set of shared local users and passwords or even locally, if you're unlucky enough to have to physically go to a machine. Anyway, does this have an actual name, and if so, what is it? I feel kind of stupid saying the dot-slash thing, which is how I've been referring to this.

• Windows VPN not authenticating from ADSL to Wireless link

  I have a normal windows VPN on a computer connecting to a 196.201.x.x/24 IP. If this VPN tries to connect from any address in the 41.x.x.x range it cant get there. The server is a normal windows 2008 server, running exchange with a PPPoE IP natted to a public IP on the public gateway of the wireless network as the server is on site and its connectivity is derived from Mikrotik RB's. The computer on the 41 range can traceroute and ping the server, but the VPN does not authenticate. When on the network or any other, the VPN works fine. Is there something that could be configured on the VPN client? All firewall settings of a standard ADSL router have been checked and found to block only ICMP's. Is this a VPN configuration problem or a network issue?

  I have an Asus EEE PC 1225B with fresh Lubuntu 12.04. And no sound. It doesn't seem to be some common problem, so I have to make some research what's up. I tried running alsamixer, so I know I have Realtek ALC269VB with nothing muted unexpectedly. What can I do next to identify and solve the problem? • XP can't read data from transferred HD

  Computer A, running XP, died. XP was installed on a fresh HD in computer B. Slaved data-backup HD from A was installed as slave on B. B will not read it; shows only 2 folders, Recycler and System Volume Info. All of these are older machines with IDE drives. What's going on & how can I read/transfer the data from the transferred drive? This was only a trial run. Actually I will need to transfer the master HD from A - which has XP on it - and read from its data partition because (blush) the backup drive was not up to date.
