• Browser compatibility; Before or after uploading website to server?

  I am on the stage where I need to make my website cross-browser compatible. I need tips on how to get started. I have developed my website on firefox, so it works great with firefox. I guess I have to download a couple of versions of all major browsers now, right? Then just test each browser one by one? Should I do this before uploading the entire website onto a server or afterwards? All tips and SW which makes this easier is appreciated. BTW, it is a classifieds website using MySql, Solr, PHP, js etc... Thanks

  I have this in my Rails controller: def download_clip send_file "public/output.mp4", :type=>"video/mp4", :filename => "output.mp4", :disposition => 'attachment' end and in my HTML code I have this: <a href="download_clip/"></a> Now could somebody tell me why Firefox's download window will NOT pou up, but chrome downloads the file fine? Instead firefox opens a new window and starts playing the file. I WANT THE DOWNLOAD BOX to POPUP. I have spend too much time on it

• What is the compatible JQuery line of code for IE7 and IE8?

  This line of code is working fine for Firefox $("#<%=txt1.ClientID%>").text() but not for IE8 and IE7. See the scenario below in order to understand what I really mean:- Scenario:- Loading .aspx page. populating text box with some data from database. Now user changes data in same text-box at client-side (means page not yet submitted) So here in firefox, the above line of javascript is showing me the actual data came from database, but IE7&8 showing me the changed data. But I want actual data. So i need some compatible code for IE7 & IE8 I hope i explained it well what i need. Thanks in advance

  If i want to take all functions and variables declared in my program in firefox i just iterate 'window' object. For example if i have var a=function() {}; i can use a(); or window.a(); in firefox, but not in IE. I have function iterating window object and writing all function names declared in program like that: for (smthng in window) { document.write(smthng); } works in FF, in IE there are some stuff but nothing i declare before. Any ideas?

• Alignment issues with IE7-8

  I have major issues with cross browser compatibility. This picture illustrates the problem: What code do I put in for IE7-8 so that my menu aligns properly? Right now it looks right in firefox but nothing else. This the the menu code she had (there might be other code associated but I don't know, see actual site): .custom .menu { height:25px; border: 1px none; float:right; } I have tried things mentioned in other threads, overflow:hidden; / giving a width / margin: 0 auto etc. Nothing works and only ends up breaking Firefox as well.

  I finally got Guvcview, a great software for Logitech webcam and it does all the stuff that one wants out of it. But I'm not satisfy with the video recording, video and audio out of synchronisation also video seems to be in slow motion. Please help so that I can tweak in and get a good video recording with the webcam. And on other browsers, the page just loads for about 10 minutes but never appears. The only way to resolve it is to close the browser completely as the error appears to be saved in the cache. • Inconsistent file downloads of (what should be) the same file

  I'm working on a system that archives large collections of timetstamped images. Part of the system deals with saving an image to a growing .zip file. This morning I noticed that the log system said that an image was successfully downloaded and placed in the zip file, but when I downloaded the .zip (from an apache alias running on our server), the images didn't match the log. For example, although the log said that camera 3484 captured on January 17, 2011, when I download from the apache alias, the downloaded zip file only contains images up to January 14. So, I sshed onto the server, and unzipped the file in its own directory, and that zip file has images from January 14 to today (January 17). What strikes me as odd is that this should be the exact same file as the one I downloaded from the apache alias. Other experiments: I scp-ed the file from the server to my local machine, and the zip file has the newer images. But when I use an SCP client (in this case, Fugu for OSX), I get the zip file for the older images. In short: unzipping a file on the server or after downloading through scp or after downloading through wget gives one zip file, but unzipping a file from Chrome, Firefox, or SCP client gives a different zip file, when they should be exactly the same. • I am starting to think that Prevx.com isnt a legit site...but heres my long-winded question

  I apologize in advance for the long-winded post. I posted it all because I believe its informative and may be useful. Also, I posted my question at the end. Moments ago I was RDC to a file server in my home (from inside my home). I had opened Firefox and Googled for a manufacturers website. Immediately after clicking the link, Firefox abruptly closed. This seemed odd to me to so I checked the running processes and discovered d.exe, e.exe, and f.exe running. I Googled these processes on a different machine and found them belonging to a key-logger/screen-capturer/trojan called defender.exe, which according to the Prevx lives in c:\documents and settings\user\local settings\temp. (Prevx link http://www.prevx.com/filenames/147352809685142526-X1/DEFENDER32.EXE.html) Simultaneously, an obviously-spoofed Windows Firewall popup appeared on the server asking me to click ‘yes’ to update Windows Firewall. At this time I ended all rogue processes, emptied the temp folder, removed defender.exe from startup, and checked my registry and a few other locations. Before deleting Defender.exe I noted that it was created moments ago, just before Firefox crashed. I believe that I was ‘almost’ infected with this malware. I believe that it needed me to click the phony popup in order to complete infection because it wasn’t allowed to execute processes from the temp folder. After cleaning the machine, I restarted it and have been monitoring it for over an hour. I am debating on whether or not to restore the Windows partition (a separate physical drive from the data) or to just watch it for awhle. I should mention that, because of the specs on this machine, I do not run antivirus software, but I know it well and inspect it regularly. It is a very old Compaq with a 400mhz processer and 512mb of ram. I have a static IP and the server is in the DMZ running an FTP client and some HTTP server software. All files transferred to and stored on this machine are scanned for malware before transferring. Usually the machine only runs 19 processes and performs pretty well for its intended purpose. I posted the story so that you could be aware of a possible new piece of malware and how it acts, but I also have a question or two. First, over the last few months I have noticed that PREVX is listed at the top of most of my Google searches when researching malware, especially for new or obscure malware…and they always want you to purchase something. I don’t think they are one of the top AV companies, so it seems odd that they are always the top Google result. Does anyone have any experience with any of their products? Also, what sites do you rely on for malware researching? Recently, I have found it difficult to find good info because of HijackThis-logs and other deadend info cluttering up my searches. And lastly, besides antivirus, third-party firewall, etc, what settings would you use to lock down a machine to make it more secure in instances where a stubborn admin like myself refuses to run AV? I can ping any virtual host from any machine on the network and get a response from the correct IP address. I can't see anything in out Netgear router that might prevent one machine from reaching the other. Besides, once the local hosts file resolves to an ip address that's all that goes out onto the local network. I've gone through an extensive number of posts on both SO and as the result of Google searches. I can't say that I have found anything definitive anywhere.

ASP.NET MVC ASP.NET MVC Mini-Profiler: The folks at StackOverflow.com (a great site built with ASP.NET MVC) have released a nice (free) profiler they’ve built that enables you to easily profile your ASP.NET MVC 3 sites and tune them for performance.  Globalization, Internationalization and Localization in ASP.NET MVC 3: Great post from Scott Hanselman on how to enable internationalization, globalization and localization support within your ASP.NET MVC 3 and jQuery solutions. Precompile your MVC Razor Views: Great post from David Ebbo that discusses a new Razor Generator tool that enables you to pre-compile your razor view templates as assemblies – which enables a bunch of cool scenarios. Unit Testing Razor Views: Nice post from David Ebbo that shows how to use his new Razor Generator to enable unit testing of razor view templates with ASP.NET MVC. Bin Deploying ASP.NET MVC 3: Nice post by Phil Haack that covers a cool feature added to VS 2010 SP1 that makes it really easy to \bin deploy ASP.NET MVC and Razor within your application. This enables you to easily deploy the app to servers that don’t have ASP.NET MVC 3 installed. .NET Table Splitting with EF 4.1 Code First: Great post from Morteza Manavi that discusses how to split up a single database table across multiple EF entity classes.  This shows off some of the power behind EF 4.1 and is very useful when working with legacy database schemas. Choosing the Right Collection Class: Nice post from James Michael Hare that talks about the different collection class options available within .NET.  A nice overview for people who haven’t looked at all of the support now built into the framework. Little Wonders: Empty(), DefaultIfEmpty() and Count() helper methods: Another in James Michael Hare’s excellent series on .NET/C# “Little Wonders”.  This post covers some of the great helper methods now built-into .NET that make coding even easier. NuGet NuGet 1.4 Released: Learn all about the latest release of NuGet – which includes a bunch of cool new capabilities.  It takes only seconds to update to it – go for it!
