  • Push alerts to notification tray app in Java

    Hi - how do I push server alerts to tray apps in java without using xmpp or other heavy protocols? Do you recommend a way to accomplish this? I was planning to write an app which uses URLConnection on a server equipped with Comet but I doubt if that would work as the client requires a JS to be invoked and URLConnection is not a browser.. What is the best way to push instead of using a proprietary client-server approach?

  • Cancel changes in a Java Swing Input window

    I am new to Java Swing and I am creating a window which displays a list of items retrieved from an XML file that can be manipulated by the user. The window should have a Cancel and a Save functionality implemented with buttons. While the Save functionality is straightforward (just close the window) I don't know how to implement the Cancel functionality. Does exist an "undo" function? Does anyone know how?

    I've got this function for encrypting passwords in Java, but somehow when I call MessageDigest, it returns a different result every time even though I call it with the same password.     Exception handling aside, I'm using the following to input a line of text in Java: BufferedReader strin = new BufferedReader(new InputStreamReader(System.in)); String txt = null; txt = strin.readLine(); However, I want to be able to edit an existing string, so that if txt were initialized to "hello" instead of null, then the readLine() would have the "hello" text in the buffer for me to edit. I can't see how to do this. Any help would be appreciated.

There are some file path settings and permissions details that differ on the two (and there is nothing I can do to change this). Is there some way of detecting which machine the app is sitting on (it's only one of two), either by detecting the operating system or the computer's name so I can then using the appropriate settings.
