  • any suggestions on this css print problem

    - by user225269
    I have this code on my print.css: #header, #tae, #nav, .noprint {display: none;} width: 100%; margin: 0; float: none; In order not to display the elements within those div tags. But I don't know with the code below why it isn't cooperating. If I place the div tags on it. And then I hit the print button. I see no output. Here it is: <div id="tae"> <table border="0" align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="bg1"> <tr> <td class="text1" style="height: 50px;">xd627 information management system</td> </tr> <tr> <td class="bg5"><table border="0" cellspacing="0" cellpadding="0" style="height: 62px; padding-top: 15px;"> <tr align="center"> <td><a href="userpage.php" class="link1">Homepage</a></td> <td><a href="RegStuds.php" class="link1">Database</a></td> <td><a href="#" class="link1">About</a></td> <td>&nbsp;</td> <td>&nbsp;</td> <td>&nbsp;</td> </tr> </table></td> </tr> <tr> <td valign="top" class="bg6">&nbsp;</td> </tr> <tr> <td><table width="780" border="0" cellspacing="0" cellpadding="0"> <tr valign="top"> <td width="20">&nbsp;</td> <td width="297"><table width="100%" border="0" cellspacing="0" cellpadding="0"> <tr> <td><img src="images/spacer.gif" alt="" width="30" height="30" /></td> </tr> </tr> <tr> <td class="text2"> </div> <div id="max"> <?php //some php code in here showing a mysql table. ?> </div> What's wrong with my code? Does the php script depend on the one where I put the div tag in? What do I do? All I want to show up in my page when printed is the mysql table. I'm using Universal Document Converter to simulate printing.

  • Rails controller method going to plural form

    - by Jty.tan
    I'm new to rails! Ok, I am trying to set up a user signup form. It is mapped as a singular resource in the routes map.resource :user And trying to create the user through the console works fine. the controller code for user's signup is as follows: def signup @user = User.new#(params[:user]) end def create @user = User.new(params[:user]) #debugger if request.post? if @user.save session[:user] = User.authenticate(@user.login, @user.password) flash[:message] = "Signup successful" redirect_to registries_path else flash[:warning] = "Signup unsuccessful" #redirect_to 'user/signup' end end end The signup view is as follows (and this is where i think something is going wrong) <% form_tag user_path do %> <p>User creation.</p> <p><%= error_messages_for 'user' %></p> <p> <label>Username:</label> <%= text_field_tag 'login', nil, :size => 20, :maxlength => 20 %> </p> <p> <label>Password:</label> <%= password_field_tag 'password', nil, :size => 20, :maxlength => 20 %> </p> <p> <label>Password confirmation:</label> <%= password_field_tag 'password_confirmation', nil, :size => 20, :maxlength => 20 %> </p> <p> <label>Email:</label> <%= text_field_tag 'email' %> </p> <p><%= submit_tag 'Signup' %></p> <% end %> Now, that page renders just fine. I've called the form on the "user_path" which is singular (i think?). But when I hit the submit button, it gives me an error saying that uninitialized constant UsersController the occurence of the error makes sense, since User is meant to be singular, so if it is trying to call the Users controller, it should be chucking an error. When I checked the server log, it shows this message: Processing ApplicationController#create (for 127.0.0.1 at 2010-05-08 16:26:14) [POST] Parameters: {"commit"=>"Signup", "password_confirmation"=>"[FILTERED]", "action"=>"create", "authenticity_token"=>"yOcHY+rMjaqmu9HS8EwnDqJKbc0Zxictc0y4dtD26ac=", "controller"=>"users", "login"=>"bob", "password"=>"[FILTERED]", "email"=>"[email protected]"} NameError (uninitialized constant UsersController): In the params, I can see that it is calling the "users" controller. But I'm not sure how to fix that, or what is causing it to call the "users" controller as opposed to the "user" controller. Any ideas? Thanks in advance!

  • multple inner joins 3 or more crashes mysql server 5.1.30 opensolaris

    - by user331849
    when doing simple query on 4 inner joined tables, the server crashes with the output below appearing in the the mysql .err file. eg. select * from table1 inner join table2 on table1.a = table2.a and table1.b = table2.b inner join table3 on table2.a = table3.a and table2.c = table3.c inner join table4 on table3.a = table4.a and table3.d = table4.d If i remove one of the tables it executes fine. Likewise if I remove a different table, it executes fine. • Why don't I just build the whole web app in Javascript and Javascript HTML Templates?

    - by viatropos
    I'm getting to the point on an app where I need to start caching things, and it got me thinking... In some parts of the app, I render table rows (jqGrid, slickgrid, etc.) or fancy div rows (like in the New Twitter) by grabbing pure JSON and running it through something like Mustache, jquery.tmpl, etc. In other parts of the app, I just render the info in pure HTML (server-side HAML templates), and if there's searching/paginating, I just go to a new URL and load a new HTML page. Now the problem is in caching and maintainability. On one hand I'm thinking, if everything was built using Javascript HTML Templates, then my app would serve just an HTML layout/shell, and a bunch of JSON. If you look at the Facebook and Twitter HTML source, that's basically what they're doing (95% json/javascript, 5% html). This would make it so my app only needed to cache JSON (pages, actions, and/or records). Which means you'd hit the cache no matter if you were some remote api developer accessing a JSON api, or the strait web app. That is, I don't need 2 caches, one for the JSON, one for the HTML. That seems like it'd cut my cache store down in half, and streamline things a little bit. On the other hand, I'm thinking, from what I've seen/experienced, generating static HTML server-side, and caching that, seems to be much better performance wise cross-browser; you get the graphics instantly and don't have to wait that split-second for javascript to render it. StackOverflow seems to do everything in plain HTML, and you can tell... everything appears at once. Notice how though on twitter.com, the page is blank for .5-1 seconds, and the page chunks in: the javascript has to render the json. The downside with this is that, for anything dynamic (like endless scrolling, or grids), I'd have to create javascript templates anyway... so now I have server-side HAML templates, client-side javascript templates, and a lot more to cache. My question is, is there any consensus on how to approach this? What are the benefits and drawbacks from your experience of mixing the two versus going 100% with one over the other? Update: Some reasons that factor into why I haven't yet made the decision to go with 100% javascript templating are: Performance. Haven't formally tested, but from what I've seen, raw html renders faster and more fluidly than javascript-generated html cross-browser. Plus, I'm not sure how mobile devices handle dynamic html performance-wise. Testing. I have a lot of integration tests that work well with static HTML, so switching to javascript-only would require 1) more focused pure-javascript testing (jasmine), and 2) integrating javascript into capybara integration tests. This is just a matter of time and work, but it's probably significant. Maintenance. Getting rid of HAML. I love HAML, it's so easy to write, it prints pretty HTML... It makes code clean, it makes maintenance easy. Going with javascript, there's nothing as concise. SEO. I know google handles the ajax /#!/path, but haven't grasped how this will affect other search engines and how older browsers handle it. Seems like it'd require a significant setup.

  • Rails destroy confirm with Jquery AJAX

    - by Mike
    I have got this working for the most part. My rails link is: <%= link_to(image_tag('/images/bin.png', :alt => 'Remove'), @business, :class => 'delete', :confirm => 'Are you sure?', :id => 'trash') %> :class = "delete" is calling an ajax function so that it is deleted and the page isn't refreshed that works great. But because the page doesn't refresh, it is still there. So my id trash is calling this jquery function: $('[id^=trash]').click(function(){ var row = $(this).closest("tr").get(0); $(row).hide(); return false; }); Which is hiding the row of whatever trash icon i clicked on. This also works great. I thought I had it all worked out and then I hit this problem. When you click on my trash can I have this confirm box pop up to ask you if you are sure. Regardless of whether you choose cancel or accept, the jquery fires and it hides the row. It isn't deleted, only hidden till you refresh the page. I tried changing it so that the prompt is done through jquery, but then rails was deleteing the row regardless of what i choose in my prompt because the .destroy function was being called when the prompt was being called. My question really is how can i get the value to cancel or accept from the rails confirm pop up so that in my jquery I can have an if statement that hides if they click accept and does nothing if they click cancel. EDIT: Answering Question below. That did not work. I tried changing my link to: <%= link_to(image_tag('/images/bin.png', :alt => 'Remove'), @business, :class => "delete", :onclick => "trash") %> and putting this in my jquery function trash(){ if(confirm("Are you sure?")){ var row = $(this).closest("tr").get(0); $(row).hide(); return false; } else { //they clicked no. } } But the function was never called. It just deletes it with no prompt and doesn't hide it. But that gave me an idea. I took the delete function that ajax was calling $('a.delete').click (function(){ $.post(this.href, {_method:'delete'}, null, "script"); $(row).hide(); }); And modified it implementing your code: remove :confirm = 'Are you sure?' $('a.delete').click (function(){ if(confirm("Are you sure?")){ var row = $(this).closest("tr").get(0); $.post(this.href, {_method:'delete'}, null, "script"); $(row).hide(); return false; } else { //they clicked no. return false; } }); Which does the trick.

  • CSS menu items flickering in IE6

    - by Quick Joe Smith
    Edit #1: I have just discovered this flicker bug affects IE8 (and therefore most likely IE7) as well. I am putting together a pure-CSS dropdown menu (mostly a learning exercise) and have hit a point in IE where the submenu items are flickering as the mouse moves around within the <li> but outside the inner <a>. Source code is as follows: The included csshover3.htc is downloadable from Peter Nederlof's page for Whatever:hover <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Strict//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-strict.dtd"> <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"> <head> <title>CSS Menu</title> <style type="text/css"> body { behavior: url("csshover3.htc"); } div#navbar { background-color:#333; font-size:1.4em; overflow:auto; } div#navbar ul { display:inline-block; /* ie6 float container bug */ list-style:none; margin:0px; padding:0px; } div#navbar ul.menu li { float:left; display:inline; /* ie6 double-margin bug */ } div#navbar ul.menu a { display:block; text-decoration:none; color:#fff; padding:5px 10px; } div#navbar ul li a:link, div#navbar ul li a:visited { text-decoration:none; } div#navbar ul li a:hover { color:#333; background-color:#f6c323; } div#navbar ul.menu ul { display:none; } div#navbar ul.menu li:hover ul { display:block; position:absolute; background-color:#333; } div#navbar ul.menu li:hover ul li { float:none; } div#navbar ul.menu li:hover ul ul { display:none; } div#navbar ul.menu li:hover li:hover { position:relative; } div#navbar ul.menu li:hover li:hover ul { display:block; position:absolute; left:100%; top:0; } </style> </head> <body> <h1>CSS Menu</h1> <div id="navbar"> <ul class="menu"> <li><a href="#">A</a></li> <li> <a>B</a> <ul> <li><a href="#">123</a></li> <li><a href="#">2</a></li> <li> <a>Tweee</a> <ul> <li><a href="#">Phwoar</a></li> <li><a href="#">Gr</a></li> </ul> </li> </ul> </li> <li><a href="#">C</a></li> </ul> </div> </body> </html> Live demo: http://jsfiddle.net/4q6Vw/ Any help is appreciated.

  • PHP script causes segmentation fault then the browser asks me to download the .php file with nothing in it?

    - by John
    I've noticed an unusual problem with some of my php programs. Sometimes when visiting a page like profile.edit.php, the browser throws a dialogue box asking to download profile.edit.php page. When I download it, there's nothing in the file. profile.edit.php is supposed to be a web form that edits user information. I've noticed this on some of my other php pages as well. I look in my apache error logs, and I see a segmentation fault message: [Mon Mar 08 15:40:10 2010] [notice] child pid 480 exit signal Segmentation fault (11) And also, the issue may or may not appear depending on which server I deploy my application too. Additonal Details This doesn't happen all the time though. It only happens sometimes. For example, profile.edit.php will load properly. But as soon as I hit the save button (form action="profile.edit.php?save=true"), then the page asks me to download profile.edit.php. Could it be that sometimes my php scripts consume too much resources? Sample code Upon save action, my profile.edit.php includes a data_access_object.php file. I traced the code in data_access_object.php to this line here if($params[$this->primaryKey]) { $q = "UPDATE $this->tableName SET ".implode(', ', $fields)." WHERE ".$this->primaryKey." = ?$this->primaryKey"; $this->bind($this->primaryKey, $params[$this->primaryKey], $this->tblFields[$this->primaryKey]['mysqlitype']); } else { $q = "INSERT $this->tableName SET ".implode(', ', $fields); } // Code executes perfectly up to this point // echo 'print this'; exit; // if i uncomment this line, profile.edit.php will actually show 'print this'. If I leave it commented, the browser will ask me to download profile.edit.php if(!$this->execute($q)){ $this->errorSave = -3; return false;} // When I jumped into the function execute(), every line executed as expected, right up to the return statement. And if it helps, here's the function execute($sql) in data_access_object.php function execute($sql) { // find all list types and explode them // eg. turn ?listId into ?listId0,?listId1,?listId2 $arrListParam = array_bubble_up('arrayName', $this->arrBind); foreach($arrListParam as $listName) if($listName) { $explodeParam = array(); $arrList = $this->arrBind[$listName]['value']; foreach($arrList as $key=>$val) { $newParamName = $listName.$key; $this->bind($newParamName,$val,$this->arrBind[$listName]['type']); $explodeParam[] = '?'.$newParamName; } $sql = str_replace("?$listName", implode(',',$explodeParam), $sql); } // replace all ?varName with ? for syntax compliance $sqlParsed = preg_replace('/\?[\w\d_\.]+/', '?', $sql); $this->stmt->prepare($sqlParsed); // grab all the parameters from the sql to create bind conditions preg_match_all('/\?[\w\d_\.]+/', $sql, $matches); $matches = $matches[0]; // store bind conditions $types = ''; $params = array(); foreach($matches as $paramName) { $types .= $this->arrBind[str_replace('?', '', $paramName)]['type']; $params[] = $this->arrBind[str_replace('?', '', $paramName)]['value']; } $input = array('types'=>$types) + $params; // bind it if(!empty($types)) call_user_func_array(array($this->stmt, 'bind_param'), $input); $stat = $this->stmt->execute(); if($GLOBALS['DEBUG_SQL']) echo '<p style="font-weight:bold;">SQL error after execution:</p> ' . $this->stmt->error.'<p>&nbsp;</p>'; $this->arrBind = array(); return $stat; }

  • Applying Unity in dynamic menu

    - by Rajarshi
    I was going through Unity 2.0 to check if it has an effective use in our new application. My application is a Windows Forms application and uses a traditional bar menu (at the top), currently. My UIs (Windows Forms) more or less support Dependency Injection pattern since they all work with a class (Presentation Model Class) supplied to them via the constructor. The form then binds to the properties of the supplied P Model class and calls methods on the P Model class to perform its duties. Pretty simple and straightforward. How P Model reacts to the UI actions and responds to them by co-ordinating with the Domain Class (Business Logic/Model) is irrelevant here and thus not mentioned. The object creation sequence to show up one UI from menu then goes like this - Create Business Model instance Create Presentation Model instance with Business Model instance passed to P Model constructor. Create UI instance with Presentation Model instance passed to UI constructor. My present solution: To show an UI in the method above from my menu I would have to refer all assemblies (Business, PModel, UI) from my Menu class. Considering I have split the modules into a number of physical assemblies, that would be a dificult task to add references to about 60 different assemblies. Also the approach is not very scalable since I would certainly need to release more modules and with this approach I would have to change the source code every time I release a new module. So primarily to avoid the reference of so many assemblies from my Menu class (assembly) I did as below - Stored all the dependency described above in a database table (SQL Server), e.g. ModuleShortCode | BModelAssembly | BModelFullTypeName | PModelAssembly | PModelFullTypeName | UIAssembly | UIFullTypeName Now used a static class named "Launcher" with a method "Launch" as below - Launcher.Launch("Discount") Launcher.Launch("Customers") The Launcher internally uses data from the dependency table and uses Activator.CreateInstance() to create each of the objects and uses the instance as constructor parameter to the next object being created, till the UI is built. The UI is then shown as a modal dialog. The code inside Launcher is somewhat like - Form frm = ResolveForm("Discount"); frm.ShowDialog(); The ResolveForm does the trick of building the chain of objects. Can Unity help me here? Now when I did that I did not have enough information on Unity and now that I have studied Unity I think I have been doing more or less the same thing. So I tried to replace my code with Unity. However, as soon as I started I hit a block. If I try to resolve UI forms in my Menu as Form customers = myUnityContainer.Resolve(); or Form customers = myUnityContainer.Resolve(typeof(Customers)); Then either way, I need to refer to my UI assembly from my Menu assembly since the target Type "Customers" need to be known for Unity to resolve it. So I am back to same place since I would have to refer all UI assemblies from the Menu assembly. I understand that with Unity I would have to refer fewer assemblies (only UI assemblies) but those references are needed which defeats my objectives below - Create the chain of objects dynamically without any assembly reference from Menu assembly. This is to avoid Menu source code changing every time I release a new module. My Menu also is built dynamically from a table. Be able to supply new modules just by supplying the new assemblies and inserting the new Dependency row in the table by a database patch. At this stage, I have a feeling that I have to do it the way I was doing, i.e. Activator.CreateInstance() to fulfil all my objectives. I need to verify whether the community thinks the same way as me or have a better suggestion to solve the problem. The post is really long and I sincerely thank you if you come til this point. Waiting for your valuable suggestions. Rajarshi

  • ZF: Form array field - how to display values in the view correctly

    - by Wojciech Fracz
    Let's say I have a Zend_Form form that has a few text fields, e.g: $form = new Zend_Form(); $form->addElement('text', 'name', array( 'required' => true, 'isArray' => true, 'filters' => array( /* ... */ ), 'validators' => array( /* ... */ ), )); $form->addElement('text', 'surname', array( 'required' => true, 'isArray' => true, 'filters' => array( /* ... */ ), 'validators' => array( /* ... */ ), )); After rendering it I have following HTML markup (simplified): <div id="people"> <div class="person"> <input type="text" name="name[]" /> <input type="text" name="surname[]" /> </div> </div> Now I want to have the ability to add as many people as I want. I create a "+" button that in Javascript appends next div.person to the container. Before I submit the form, I have for example 5 names and 5 surnames, posted to the server as arrays. Everything is fine unless somebody puts the value in the field that does not validate. Then the whole form validation fails and when I want to display the form again (with errors) I see the PHP Warning: htmlspecialchars() expects parameter 1 to be string, array given Which is more or less described in ticket: http://framework.zend.com/issues/browse/ZF-8112 However, I came up with a not-very-elegant solution. What I wanted to achieve: have all fields and values rendered again in the view have error messages only next to the fields that contained bad values Here is my solution (view script): <div id="people"> <?php $names = $form->name->getValue(); // will have an array here if the form were submitted $surnames= $form->surname->getValue(); // only if the form were submitted we need to validate fields' values // and display errors next to them; otherwise when user enter the page // and render the form for the first time - he would see Required validator // errors $needsValidation = is_array($names) || is_array($surnames); // print empty fields when the form is displayed the first time if(!is_array($names))$names= array(''); if(!is_array($surnames))$surnames= array(''); // display all fields! foreach($names as $index => $name): $surname = $surnames[$index]; // validate value if needed if($needsValidation){ $form->name->isValid($name); $form->surname->isValid($surname); } ?> <div class="person"> <?=$form->name->setValue($name); // display field with error if did not pass the validation ?> <?=$form->surname->setValue($surname);?> </div> <?php endforeach; ?> </div> The code work, but I want to know if there is an appropriate, more comfortable way to do this? I often hit this problem when there is a need for a more dynamic - multivalue forms and have not find better solution for a long time.

  • ValidationProperty not returning entered value for textbox

    - by nat
    hi I have a custom control, (relevant code at the bottom) it consists of some text/links and a hidden textbox (rather than a hidden input). when rendered, the user via another dialog and some JS sets the value of the textbox to an integer and clicks submit on the form. i am trying to assure that the user has entered a number (via the JS) and that the textbox is not still set to its default of "0" the requiredfieldvalidator works just fine, if i dont change the value it spots it on the client and fills the validation summary on the page with the appropriate message. unfortunately when i do fill the textbox, the validator also rejests the post as the controls textbox text value is still set to "0", even though on the form it has changed. clearly i am doing something wrong.. but cant work out what it is? could someone enlighten me please, this is driving me potty if i step through the code, when the get of the mediaidtext is hit,the findcontrol finds the textbox, but the value is still set to "0" many thanks code below nat [ValidationProperty("MediaIdText")] public class MediaLibraryFileControl: CompositeControl { private int mediaId = 0; public int MediaId { get { return mediaId; } set { mediaId = value; } } public string MediaIdText { get { string txt = "0"; Control ctrl = this.FindControl(this.UniqueID+ "_hidden"); try { txt = ((TextBox)ctrl).Text; MediaId = Convert.ToInt32(txt); } catch { MediaId = 0; } return txt; } } protected override void CreateChildControls() { this.Controls.Add(new LiteralControl("<span>")); this.Controls.Add(new LiteralControl("<span id=\"" + TextControlName + "\">" + getMediaDetails() + "</span>")); TextBox tb = new TextBox(); tb.Text = this.MediaId.ToString(); tb.ID = this.UniqueID + "_hidden"; tb.CssClass = "hidden"; this.Controls.Add(tb); if (Select == true) { this.Controls.Add(new LiteralControl(string.Format("&nbsp;[<a href=\"javascript:{0}(this,'{1}','{2}')\" class=\"select\">{3}</a>]", dialog, this.UniqueID, this.categoryId, "select"))); this.Controls.Add(new LiteralControl(string.Format("&nbsp;[<a href=\"javascript:{0}(this,'{1}')\" class=\"select\">{2}</a>]", clearDialog, this.ID, "clear"))); } this.Controls.Add(new LiteralControl("</span>")); } protected virtual string getMediaDetails() { //... return String.Empty; } } this is the code adding the validationcontrol the editcontrol is the instance of the control above public override Control RenderValidationControl(Control editControl) { Control ctrl = new PlaceHolder(); RequiredFieldValidator req = new RequiredFieldValidator(); req.ID = editControl.ClientID + "_validator"; req.ControlToValidate = editControl.ID; req.Display = ValidatorDisplay.None; req.InitialValue = "0"; req.EnableClientScript = false; req.ErrorMessage = "control cannot be blank"; ctrl.Controls.Add(req); return ctrl; }

  • Do you know of a C macro to compute Unix time and date?

    - by Alexis Wilke
    I'm wondering if someone knows/has a C macro to compute a static Unix time from a hard coded date and time as in: time_t t = UNIX_TIMESTAMP(2012, 5, 10, 9, 26, 13); I'm looking into that because I want to have a numeric static timestamp. This will be done hundred of times throughout the software, each time with a different date, and I want to make sure it is fast because it will run hundreds of times every second. Converting dates that many times would definitively slow down things (i.e. calling mktime() is slower than having a static number compiled in place, right?) [made an update to try to render this paragraph clearer, Nov 23, 2012] Update I want to clarify the question with more information about the process being used. As my server receives requests, for each request, it starts a new process. That process is constantly updated with new plugins and quite often such updates require a database update. Those must be run only once. To know whether an update is necessary, I want to use a Unix date (which is better than using a counter because a counter is much more likely to break once in a while.) The plugins will thus receive an update signal and have their on_update() function called. There I want to do something like this: void some_plugin::on_update(time_t last_update) { if(last_update < UNIX_TIMESTAMP(2010, 3, 22, 20, 9, 26)) { ...run update... } if(last_update < UNIX_TIMESTAMP(2012, 5, 10, 9, 26, 13)) { ...run update... } // as many test as required... } As you can see, if I have to compute the unix timestamp each time, this could represent thousands of calls per process and if you receive 100 hits a second x 1000 calls, you wasted 100,000 calls when you could have had the compiler compute those numbers once at compile time. Putting the value in a static variable is of no interest because this code will run once per process run. Note that the last_update variable changes depending on the website being hit (it comes from the database.) Code Okay, I got the code now: // helper (Days in February) #define _SNAP_UNIX_TIMESTAMP_FDAY(year) \ (((year) % 400) == 0 ? 29LL : \ (((year) % 100) == 0 ? 28LL : \ (((year) % 4) == 0 ? 29LL : \ 28LL))) // helper (Days in the year) #define _SNAP_UNIX_TIMESTAMP_YDAY(year, month, day) \ ( \ /* January */ static_cast<qint64>(day) \ /* February */ + ((month) >= 2 ? 31LL : 0LL) \ /* March */ + ((month) >= 3 ? _SNAP_UNIX_TIMESTAMP_FDAY(year) : 0LL) \ /* April */ + ((month) >= 4 ? 31LL : 0LL) \ /* May */ + ((month) >= 5 ? 30LL : 0LL) \ /* June */ + ((month) >= 6 ? 31LL : 0LL) \ /* July */ + ((month) >= 7 ? 30LL : 0LL) \ /* August */ + ((month) >= 8 ? 31LL : 0LL) \ /* September */+ ((month) >= 9 ? 31LL : 0LL) \ /* October */ + ((month) >= 10 ? 30LL : 0LL) \ /* November */ + ((month) >= 11 ? 31LL : 0LL) \ /* December */ + ((month) >= 12 ? 30LL : 0LL) \ ) #define SNAP_UNIX_TIMESTAMP(year, month, day, hour, minute, second) \ ( /* time */ static_cast<qint64>(second) \ + static_cast<qint64>(minute) * 60LL \ + static_cast<qint64>(hour) * 3600LL \ + /* year day (month + day) */ (_SNAP_UNIX_TIMESTAMP_YDAY(year, month, day) - 1) * 86400LL \ + /* year */ (static_cast<qint64>(year) - 1970LL) * 31536000LL \ + ((static_cast<qint64>(year) - 1969LL) / 4LL) * 86400LL \ - ((static_cast<qint64>(year) - 1901LL) / 100LL) * 86400LL \ + ((static_cast<qint64>(year) - 1601LL) / 400LL) * 86400LL ) WARNING: Do not use these macros to dynamically compute a date. It is SLOWER than mktime(). This being said, if you have a hard coded date, then the compiler will compute the time_t value at compile time. Slower to compile, but faster to execute over and over again.

  • C++ Serial Port Question

    - by Pfeffer
    Problem: I have a hand held device that scans those graphic color barcodes on all packaging. There is a track device that I can use that will slide the device automatically. This track device functions by taking ascii code through a serial port. I need to get this thing to work in FileMaker on a Mac. So no terminal programs, etc... What I've got so far: I bought a Keyspan USB/Serial adapter. Using a program called ZTerm I was successful in sending commands to the device. Example: "C,7^M^J" I was also able to do the same thing in Terminal using this command: screen /dev/tty.KeySerial1 57600 and then type in the same command above(but when I typed in I just hit Control-M and Control-J for the carriage return and line feed) Now I'm writing a plug-in for FileMaker(in C++ of course). I want to get what I did above happen in C++ so when I install that plug-in in FileMaker I can just call one of those functions and have the whole process take place right there. I'm able to connect to the device, but I can't talk to it. It is not responding to anything. I've tried connecting to the device(successfully) using these: FILE *comport; if ((comport = fopen("/dev/tty.KeySerial1", "w")) == NULL){...} and int fd; fd = open("/dev/tty.KeySerial1", O_RDWR | O_NOCTTY | O_NDELAY); This is what I've tried so far in way of talking to the device: fputs ("C,7^M^J",comport); or fprintf(comport,"C,7^M^J"); or char buffer[] = { 'C' , ',' , '7' , '^' , 'M' , '^' , 'J' }; fwrite (buffer , 1 , sizeof(buffer) , comport ); or fwrite('C,7^M^J', 1, 1, comport); Questions: When I connected to the device from Terminal and using ZTerm, I was able to set my baud rate of 57600. I think that may be why it isn't responding here. But I don't know how to do it here.... Does any one know how to do that? I tried this, but it didn't work: comport->BaudRate = 57600; There are a lot of class solutions out there but they all call these include files like termios.h and stdio.h. I don't have these and, for whatever reason, I can't find them to download. I've downloaded a few examples but there are like 20 files in them and they're all calling other files I can't find(like the ones listed above). Do I need to find these and if so where? I just don't know enough about C++ Is there a website where I can download libraries?? Another solution might be to put those terminal commands in C++. Is there a way to do that? So this has been driving me crazy. I'm not a C++ guy, I only know basic programming concepts. Is anyone out there a C++ expert? I ideally I'd like this to just work using functions I already have, like those fwrite, fputs stuff. Thanks!

  • I'm trying to make lots of the same object appear randomly on the screen subject to conditions and k

    - by Katsideswide
    Hi! A good friend recommended this site to me, it looks really useful! I'm a bit of a shameless noob at actionscript and after 3 days of tutorials and advice I've hit a brick wall. I've managed to get a sensor attached to an arduino talking to flash using something called AS3glue. it works, when i set up a trace("leaf") for the contition that the sensor reads 0, i get a printout of the word "leaf". however i want the program to make a graphic appear on the screen when this condition is met, not just trace something. I'm trying to get the program to generate a library object called "Enemy" on the screen at a random position each time the conditions are met. It's called enemy because I was following a game tutorial...actually it's a drawing of a leaf. Here's the bit of the code which is causing me problems: var army:Array; var enemy:Enemy; function AvoiderGame() { army = new Array(); var newEnemy = new Enemy( 100, 100 ); army.push( newEnemy ); addChild( newEnemy ); } function timerEvent(event:Event):void { if (a.getAnalogData(0) ==0 && a.getAnalogData(0) != this.lastposition){ trace("leaf"); var randomX:Number = (Math.random() * 200) + 100; var randomY:Number = (Math.random() * 150) + 50; var newEnemy = new Enemy( randomX, randomY); army.push( newEnemy ); addChild( newEnemy ); } else if (a.getAnalogData(0) == 0) { //don't trace anything } else { //don't trace anything } this.lastposition = a.getAnalogData(0); //afterwards, set the position to be the new lastposition and repeat. } I've imported "import flash.display.MovieClip;" and the code for the Enemy class looks like this: package { import flash.display.MovieClip; public class Enemy extends MovieClip { public function Enemy( startX:Number, startY:Number ) { x = startX; y = startY; } } } Here's my error. I've tried googling, it seems like a pretty general error: TypeError: Error #1009: Cannot access a property or method of a null object reference. at as3glue_program_fla::MainTimeline/timerEvent() at flash.utils::Timer/_timerDispatch() at flash.utils::Timer/tick() I've made sure that the "Enemy" object is exported for AS3. I'm going for something like this when it's programmed in AS2: leafCounter = 0; //set the counter to 0 counter.swapDepths(1000); //puts the counter on top of pretty much anything, unless you make more than 1000 leaves! counter.textbox.text = 0; //shows "0" in the text box in the "counter" movie clip this.onMouseDown = function() { //triggers when the mouse is clicked this.attachMovie("Leaf","Leaf"+leafCounter,leafCounter,{_x:Math.random()*Stage.width,_y:Math.random()*Stage.height,_rotation:Math.random()*360}); //adds a leaf to rthe stage with a random position and random rotation leafCounter++; //adds 1 to the leaf counter counter.textbox.text = leafCounter; //shows that number in the text box } I'm sure it must be a simple error, I can get the logic working when it just traces something on the screen but i can't get it to generate an "enemy" Any help or hints would be really useful! I know this is a bit of a ham-fisted job of altering existing code.

  • Flash Mouse.hide() cmd+tab(alt+tab) bring the mouse back

    - by DickieBoy
    Having a bit of trouble with Mouse.show() and losing focus of the swf This isn't my demo: but its showing the same bug http://www.foundation-flash.com/tutorials/as3customcursors/ What i do to recreate it is: mouse over the swf, hit cmd+tab to highlight another window, result is that the mouse is not brought back and is still invisible, (to get it back go to the window bar at the top of the screen and click something). I have an area in which movement is detected and an image Things I have tried package { import flash.display.Sprite; import flash.display.MovieClip; import com.greensock.*; import flash.events.*; import flash.utils.Timer; import flash.events.TimerEvent; import flash.utils.*; import flash.ui.Mouse; public class mousey_movey extends MovieClip { public var middle_of_the_flash; //pixels per second public var speeds = [0,1,3,5,10]; public var speed; public var percentage_the_mouse_is_across_the_screen; public var mouse_over_scrollable_area:Boolean; public var image_move_interval; public function mousey_movey() { middle_of_the_flash = stage.stageWidth/2; hot_area_for_movement.addEventListener(MouseEvent.MOUSE_OVER, mouseEnter); hot_area_for_movement.addEventListener(MouseEvent.MOUSE_OUT, mouseLeave); hot_area_for_movement.addEventListener(MouseEvent.MOUSE_MOVE, mouseMove); stage.addEventListener(Event.MOUSE_LEAVE, show_mouse); stage.addEventListener(MouseEvent.MOUSE_OUT, show_mouse); stage.addEventListener(Event.DEACTIVATE,show_mouse); hot_area_for_movement.alpha=0; hot_area_for_movement.x=0; hot_area_for_movement.y=34; } public function show_mouse(e) { trace(e.type) trace('show_mouse') Mouse.show(); } public function onActivate(e) { trace('activate'); Mouse.show(); } public function onDeactivate(e) { trace('deactivate'); } public function get_speed(percantage_from_middle):int { if(percantage_from_middle > 80) { return speeds[4] } else { if(percantage_from_middle > 60) { return speeds[3] } else { if(percantage_from_middle > 40) { return speeds[2] } else { if(percantage_from_middle > 20) { return speeds[1] } else { return 0; } } } } } public function mouseLeave(e:Event):void{ Mouse.show(); clearInterval(image_move_interval); } public function mouseEnter(e:Event):void{ Mouse.hide(); image_move_interval = setInterval(moveImage,1); } public function mouseMove(e:Event):void { percentage_the_mouse_is_across_the_screen = Math.round(((middle_of_the_flash-stage.mouseX)/middle_of_the_flash)*100); speed = get_speed(Math.abs(percentage_the_mouse_is_across_the_screen)); airplane_icon.x = stage.mouseX; airplane_icon.y = stage.mouseY; } public function stageMouseMove(e:Event):void{ Mouse.show(); } public function moveImage():void { if(percentage_the_mouse_is_across_the_screen > 0) { moving_image.x+=speed; airplane_icon.scaleX = -1; } else { moving_image.x-=speed; airplane_icon.scaleX = 1; } } } } Nothing too fancy, im just scrolling an image left of right at a speed which is generated by how far you are from the middle of the stage, and making an airplane moveclip follow the mouse. The events: stage.addEventListener(Event.MOUSE_LEAVE, show_mouse); stage.addEventListener(MouseEvent.MOUSE_OUT, show_mouse); stage.addEventListener(Event.DEACTIVATE,show_mouse); All fire and work correctly when in the browser, seem a little buggy when running a test through flash, was expecting this as ive experienced it before. The deactivate call even runs when testing and cmd+tabbing but shows no mouse. Any help on the matter is appreciated Thanks, Dickie

  • can't find what's wrong with my code :(

    - by blood
    the point of my code is for me to press f1 and it will scan 500 pixels down and 500 pixels and put them in a array (it just takes a box that is 500 by 500 of the screen). then after that when i hit end it will click on only on the color black or... what i set it to. anyway it has been doing odd stuff and i can't find why: #include <iostream> #include <windows.h> using namespace std; COLORREF rgb[499][499]; HDC hDC = GetDC(HWND_DESKTOP); POINT main_coner; BYTE rVal; BYTE gVal; BYTE bVal; int red; int green; int blue; int ff = 0; int main() { for(;;) { if(GetAsyncKeyState(VK_F1)) { cout << "started"; int a1 = 0; int a2 = 0; GetCursorPos(&main_coner); int x = main_coner.x; int y = main_coner.y; for(;;) { //cout << a1 << "___" << a2 << "\n"; rgb[a1][a2] = GetPixel(hDC, x, y); a1++; x++; if(x > main_coner.x + 499) { y++; x = main_coner.x; a1 = 0; a2++; } if(y > main_coner.y + 499) { ff = 1; break; } } cout << "done"; break; } if(ff == 1) break; } for(;;) { if(GetAsyncKeyState(VK_END)) { GetCursorPos(&main_coner); int x = main_coner.x; int y = main_coner.y; int a1 = -1; int a2 = -1; for(;;) { x++; a1++; rVal = GetRValue(rgb[a1][a2]); gVal = GetGValue(rgb[a1][a2]); bVal = GetBValue(rgb[a1][a2]); red = (int)rVal; // get the colors into __int8 green = (int)gVal; // get the colors into __int8 blue = (int)bVal; // get the colors into __int8 if(red == 0 && green == 0 && blue == 0) { SetCursorPos(main_coner.x + x, main_coner.y + y); mouse_event(MOUSEEVENTF_LEFTDOWN, 0, 0, 0, 0); Sleep(10); mouse_event(MOUSEEVENTF_LEFTUP, 0, 0, 0, 0); Sleep(100); } if(x > main_coner.x + 499) { a1 = 0; a2++; } if(y > main_coner.y + 499) { Sleep(100000000000); break; } if(GetAsyncKeyState(VK_CONTROL)) { Sleep(100000); break; } } } } for(;;) { if(GetAsyncKeyState(VK_END)) { break; } } return 0; } anyone see what's wrong with my code :( (feel free to add tags)

  • How to search Multiple Sites using Lucene Search engine API?

    - by Wael Salman
    Hope that someone can help me as soon as possible :-) I would like to know how can we search Multiple Sites using Lucene??! (All sites are in one index). I have succeeded to search one website , and to index multiple sites, however I am not able to search all websites. Consider this method that I have: private void PerformSearch() { DateTime start = DateTime.Now; //Create the Searcher object string strIndexDir = Server.MapPath("index") + @"\" + mstrURL; IndexSearcher objSearcher = new IndexSearcher(strIndexDir); //Parse the query, "text" is the default field to search Query objQuery = QueryParser.Parse(mstrQuery, "text", new StandardAnalyzer()); //Create the result DataTable mobjDTResults.Columns.Add("title", typeof(string)); mobjDTResults.Columns.Add("path", typeof(string)); mobjDTResults.Columns.Add("score", typeof(string)); mobjDTResults.Columns.Add("sample", typeof(string)); mobjDTResults.Columns.Add("explain", typeof(string)); //Perform search and get hit count Hits objHits = objSearcher.Search(objQuery); mintTotal = objHits.Length(); //Create Highlighter QueryHighlightExtractor highlighter = new QueryHighlightExtractor(objQuery, new StandardAnalyzer(), "<B>", "</B>"); //Initialize "Start At" variable mintStartAt = GetStartAt(); //How many items we should show? int intResultsCt = GetSmallerOf(mintTotal, mintMaxResults + mintStartAt); //Loop through results and display for (int intCt = mintStartAt; intCt < intResultsCt; intCt++) { //Get the document from resuls index Document doc = objHits.Doc(intCt); //Get the document's ID and set the cache location string strID = doc.Get("id"); string strLocation = ""; if (mstrURL.Substring(0,3) == "www") strLocation = Server.MapPath("cache") + @"\" + mstrURL + @"\" + strID + ".htm"; else strLocation = doc.Get("path") + doc.Get("filename"); //Load the HTML page from cache string strPlainText; using (StreamReader sr = new StreamReader(strLocation, System.Text.Encoding.Default)) { strPlainText = ParseHTML(sr.ReadToEnd()); } //Add result to results datagrid DataRow row = mobjDTResults.NewRow(); if (mstrURL.Substring(0,3) == "www") row["title"] = doc.Get("title"); else row["title"] = doc.Get("filename"); row["path"] = doc.Get("path"); row["score"] = String.Format("{0:f}", (objHits.Score(intCt) * 100)) + "%"; row["sample"] = highlighter.GetBestFragments(strPlainText, 200, 2, "..."); Explanation objExplain = objSearcher.Explain(objQuery, intCt); row["explain"] = objExplain.ToHtml(); mobjDTResults.Rows.Add(row); } objSearcher.Close(); //Finalize results information mTsDuration = DateTime.Now - start; mintFromItem = mintStartAt + 1; mintToItem = GetSmallerOf(mintStartAt + mintMaxResults, mintTotal); } as you can see that I use the site URL 'mstrURL' when I create the search object string strIndexDir = Server.MapPath("index") + @"\" + mstrURL; How can I do the same when I want to search multiple sites?? Actually I am using the code from http://www.keylimetie.com/blog/2005/8/4/lucenenet/

  • JSF - Random Number using Beans (JAVA)

    - by Alex Encore Tr
    I am trying to create a jsf application which, upon page refresh increments the hit counter and generates two random numbers. What should be displayed on the window may look something like this: On your On your roll x you have thrown x and x For this program I decided to create two Beans, one to hold the page refresh counter and one to generate a random number. Those look like this for the moment: CounterBean.java package diceroll; public class CounterBean { int count=0; public CounterBean() { } public void setCount(int count) { this.count=count; } public int getCount() { count++; return count; } } RandomNumberBean.java package diceroll; import java.util.Random; public class RandomNumberBean { int rand=0; Random r = new Random(); public RandomNumberBean() { rand = r.nextInt(6); } public void setNextInt(int rand) { this.rand=rand; } public int getNextInt() { return rand; } } I have then created an index.jsp to display the above message. <html> <%@ taglib uri="http://java.sun.com/jsf/core" prefix="f"%> <%@ taglib uri="http://java.sun.com/jsf/html" prefix="h"%> <f:view> <head> <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=ISO-8859-1"> <title>Roll the Dice</title> </head> <body> <h:form> <p> On your roll # <h:outputText value="#{CounterBean.count} " /> you have thrown <h:outputText value="#{RandomNumberBean.rand}" />and <h:outputText value="#{RandomNumberBean.rand} " /> </p> </h:form> </body> </f:view> </html> However, when I run the application, I get the following message: org.apache.jasper.el.JspPropertyNotFoundException: /index.jsp(14,20) '#{RandomNumberBean.rand}' Property 'rand' not found on type diceroll.RandomNumberBean Caused by: org.apache.jasper.el.JspPropertyNotFoundException - /index.jsp(14,20) '#{RandomNumberBean.rand}' Property 'rand' not found on type diceroll.RandomNumberBean I suppose there's a mistake with my faces-config.xml file, so I will post this here as well, see if somebody can provide some help: faces-config.xml <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?> <faces-config xmlns="http://java.sun.com/xml/ns/javaee" xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" xsi:schemaLocation="http://java.sun.com/xml/ns/javaee http://java.sun.com/xml/ns/javaee/web-facesconfig_2_0.xsd" version="2.0"> <managed-bean> <managed-bean-name>CounterBean</managed-bean-name> <managed-bean-class>diceroll.CounterBean</managed-bean-class> <managed-bean-scope>session</managed-bean-scope> </managed-bean> <managed-bean> <managed-bean-name>RandomNumberBean</managed-bean-name> <managed-bean-class>diceroll.RandomNumberBean</managed-bean-class> <managed-bean-scope>session</managed-bean-scope> </managed-bean> </faces-config>

  • Can I execute a "variable statements" within a function and without defines.

    - by René Nyffenegger
    I am facing a problem that I cannot see how it is solvable without #defines or incuring a performance impact although I am sure that someone can point me to a solution. I have an algorithm that sort of produces a (large) series of values. For simplicity's sake, in the following I pretend it's a for loop in a for loop, although in my code it's more complex than that. In the core of the loop I need to do calculations with the values being produced. Although the algorithm for the values stays the same, the calculations vary. So basically, what I have is: void normal() { // "Algorithm" producing numbers (x and y): for (int x=0 ; x<1000 ; x++) { for (int y=0 ; y<1000 ; y++) { // Calculation with numbers being produced: if ( x+y == 800 && y > 790) { std::cout << x << ", " << y << std::endl; } // end of calculation }} } So, the only part I need to change is if ( x+y == 800 && y > 790) { std::cout << x << ", " << y << std::endl; } So, in order to solve that, I could construct an abstract base class: class inner_0 { public: virtual void call(int x, int y) = 0; }; and derive a "callable" class from it: class inner : public inner_0 { public: virtual void call(int x, int y) { if ( x+y == 800 && y > 790) { std::cout << x << ", " << y << std::endl; } } }; I can then pass an instance of the class to the "algorithm" like so: void O(inner i) { for (int x=0 ; x<1000 ; x++) { for (int y=0 ; y<1000 ; y++) { i.call(x,y); }} } // somewhere else.... inner I; O(I); In my case, I incur a performance hit because there is an indirect call via virtual function table. So I was thinking about a way around it. It's possible with two #defines: #define OUTER \ for (int x=0 ; x<1000 ; x++) { \ for (int y=0 ; y<1000 ; y++) { \ INNER \ }} // later... #define INNER \ if (x + y == 800 && y > 790) \ std::cout << x << ", " << y << std::endl; OUTER While this certainly works, I am not 100% happy with it because I don't necessarly like #defines. So, my question: is there a better way for what I want to achieve?

  • if statement to check available elements

    - by nicmare
    Hi there, i allways found an answer here just be reading the threads but now its time for my very first thread because i was unable to find related questions: this is my target code: <li> <span class="panel"> <a href="…" class="image" rel="group"> <img title="…" src="…" alt="…" width="128" height="96" /> </a> <span class="sizes"> <span class="button"> <a href="#" class="size1" rel="…" title="1">9x13</a> </span> <span class="button"> <a href="#" class="size2" rel="…" title="3">10x15</a> </span> <span class="button"> <a href="#" class="size3" rel="…" title="6">20x30</a> </span> </span> </span> <a href="…" class="image" rel="group"> <span class="added"></span> <img title="…" src="…" alt="…" width="128" height="96" class="thumbnail" /> </a> </li> i add two "span" elements through jquery: $('.sizes a').click( function (e) { e.preventDefault(); $(this).after("<span class='checked'></span><span class='remove'></span>"); } ); the maximum amount of those s are 3 times in a wrapped div. so i am trying to do is the following: $(".remove").live('click', function(){ $(this).hide(); $(this).prev().hide(); // hide checked span if ($(this).parent().parent().children().children().each().hasClass('checked')) { $(this).parent().parent().parent().next().children(".added").hide(); } } ); of course my if statement is crap. i try it in my own words: if there are more than one span(class=remove) in span(class=panel) then nothing should happen. but if there is just one span(class=remove) left in span(class=panel) THEN should be hidden how do i achieve this? there is an online demonstration of this: http://bit.ly/972be4 as you can see, every time when i hit a button below an image, the image gets marked by a label. and i want to hide this label (class=added) when no button is selected Thank you very much! best wishes from germany

But after submission it reloads the current page as mentioned in the form action. But when I refresh the page to see the comment being added it asks to re submit. If I hit submit then the comment adds again. How can I stop this from happening? Maybe I could hide the comment box and display a thank you message but that would not stop a repeat entry. Please help. Thank you. Kev

  • Parallelism in .NET – Part 4, Imperative Data Parallelism: Aggregation

    - by Reed
    In the article on simple data parallelism, I described how to perform an operation on an entire collection of elements in parallel.  Often, this is not adequate, as the parallel operation is going to be performing some form of aggregation. Simple examples of this might include taking the sum of the results of processing a function on each element in the collection, or finding the minimum of the collection given some criteria.  This can be done using the techniques described in simple data parallelism, however, special care needs to be taken into account to synchronize the shared data appropriately.  The Task Parallel Library has tools to assist in this synchronization. The main issue with aggregation when parallelizing a routine is that you need to handle synchronization of data.  Since multiple threads will need to write to a shared portion of data.  Suppose, for example, that we wanted to parallelize a simple loop that looked for the minimum value within a dataset: double min = double.MaxValue; foreach(var item in collection) { double value = item.PerformComputation(); min = System.Math.Min(min, value); } .csharpcode, .csharpcode pre { font-size: small; color: black; font-family: consolas, "Courier New", courier, monospace; background-color: #ffffff; /*white-space: pre;*/ } .csharpcode pre { margin: 0em; } .csharpcode .rem { color: #008000; } .csharpcode .kwrd { color: #0000ff; } .csharpcode .str { color: #006080; } .csharpcode .op { color: #0000c0; } .csharpcode .preproc { color: #cc6633; } .csharpcode .asp { background-color: #ffff00; } .csharpcode .html { color: #800000; } .csharpcode .attr { color: #ff0000; } .csharpcode .alt { background-color: #f4f4f4; width: 100%; margin: 0em; } .csharpcode .lnum { color: #606060; } This seems like a good candidate for parallelization, but there is a problem here.  If we just wrap this into a call to Parallel.ForEach, we’ll introduce a critical race condition, and get the wrong answer.  Let’s look at what happens here: // Buggy code! Do not use! double min = double.MaxValue; Parallel.ForEach(collection, item => { double value = item.PerformComputation(); min = System.Math.Min(min, value); }); This code has a fatal flaw: min will be checked, then set, by multiple threads simultaneously.  Two threads may perform the check at the same time, and set the wrong value for min.  Say we get a value of 1 in thread 1, and a value of 2 in thread 2, and these two elements are the first two to run.  If both hit the min check line at the same time, both will determine that min should change, to 1 and 2 respectively.  If element 1 happens to set the variable first, then element 2 sets the min variable, we’ll detect a min value of 2 instead of 1.  This can lead to wrong answers. Unfortunately, fixing this, with the Parallel.ForEach call we’re using, would require adding locking.  We would need to rewrite this like: // Safe, but slow double min = double.MaxValue; // Make a "lock" object object syncObject = new object(); Parallel.ForEach(collection, item => { double value = item.PerformComputation(); lock(syncObject) min = System.Math.Min(min, value); }); This will potentially add a huge amount of overhead to our calculation.  Since we can potentially block while waiting on the lock for every single iteration, we will most likely slow this down to where it is actually quite a bit slower than our serial implementation.  The problem is the lock statement – any time you use lock(object), you’re almost assuring reduced performance in a parallel situation.  This leads to two observations I’ll make: When parallelizing a routine, try to avoid locks. That being said: Always add any and all required synchronization to avoid race conditions. These two observations tend to be opposing forces – we often need to synchronize our algorithms, but we also want to avoid the synchronization when possible.  Looking at our routine, there is no way to directly avoid this lock, since each element is potentially being run on a separate thread, and this lock is necessary in order for our routine to function correctly every time. However, this isn’t the only way to design this routine to implement this algorithm.  Realize that, although our collection may have thousands or even millions of elements, we have a limited number of Processing Elements (PE).  Processing Element is the standard term for a hardware element which can process and execute instructions.  This typically is a core in your processor, but many modern systems have multiple hardware execution threads per core.  The Task Parallel Library will not execute the work for each item in the collection as a separate work item. Instead, when Parallel.ForEach executes, it will partition the collection into larger “chunks” which get processed on different threads via the ThreadPool.  This helps reduce the threading overhead, and help the overall speed.  In general, the Parallel class will only use one thread per PE in the system. Given the fact that there are typically fewer threads than work items, we can rethink our algorithm design.  We can parallelize our algorithm more effectively by approaching it differently.  Because the basic aggregation we are doing here (Min) is communitive, we do not need to perform this in a given order.  We knew this to be true already – otherwise, we wouldn’t have been able to parallelize this routine in the first place.  With this in mind, we can treat each thread’s work independently, allowing each thread to serially process many elements with no locking, then, after all the threads are complete, “merge” together the results. This can be accomplished via a different set of overloads in the Parallel class: Parallel.ForEach<TSource,TLocal>.  The idea behind these overloads is to allow each thread to begin by initializing some local state (TLocal).  The thread will then process an entire set of items in the source collection, providing that state to the delegate which processes an individual item.  Finally, at the end, a separate delegate is run which allows you to handle merging that local state into your final results. To rewriting our routine using Parallel.ForEach<TSource,TLocal>, we need to provide three delegates instead of one.  The most basic version of this function is declared as: public static ParallelLoopResult ForEach<TSource, TLocal>( IEnumerable<TSource> source, Func<TLocal> localInit, Func<TSource, ParallelLoopState, TLocal, TLocal> body, Action<TLocal> localFinally ) The first delegate (the localInit argument) is defined as Func<TLocal>.  This delegate initializes our local state.  It should return some object we can use to track the results of a single thread’s operations. The second delegate (the body argument) is where our main processing occurs, although now, instead of being an Action<T>, we actually provide a Func<TSource, ParallelLoopState, TLocal, TLocal> delegate.  This delegate will receive three arguments: our original element from the collection (TSource), a ParallelLoopState which we can use for early termination, and the instance of our local state we created (TLocal).  It should do whatever processing you wish to occur per element, then return the value of the local state after processing is completed. The third delegate (the localFinally argument) is defined as Action<TLocal>.  This delegate is passed our local state after it’s been processed by all of the elements this thread will handle.  This is where you can merge your final results together.  This may require synchronization, but now, instead of synchronizing once per element (potentially millions of times), you’ll only have to synchronize once per thread, which is an ideal situation. Now that I’ve explained how this works, lets look at the code: // Safe, and fast! double min = double.MaxValue; // Make a "lock" object object syncObject = new object(); Parallel.ForEach( collection, // First, we provide a local state initialization delegate. () => double.MaxValue, // Next, we supply the body, which takes the original item, loop state, // and local state, and returns a new local state (item, loopState, localState) => { double value = item.PerformComputation(); return System.Math.Min(localState, value); }, // Finally, we provide an Action<TLocal>, to "merge" results together localState => { // This requires locking, but it's only once per used thread lock(syncObj) min = System.Math.Min(min, localState); } ); Although this is a bit more complicated than the previous version, it is now both thread-safe, and has minimal locking.  This same approach can be used by Parallel.For, although now, it’s Parallel.For<TLocal>.  When working with Parallel.For<TLocal>, you use the same triplet of delegates, with the same purpose and results. Also, many times, you can completely avoid locking by using a method of the Interlocked class to perform the final aggregation in an atomic operation.  The MSDN example demonstrating this same technique using Parallel.For uses the Interlocked class instead of a lock, since they are doing a sum operation on a long variable, which is possible via Interlocked.Add. By taking advantage of local state, we can use the Parallel class methods to parallelize algorithms such as aggregation, which, at first, may seem like poor candidates for parallelization.  Doing so requires careful consideration, and often requires a slight redesign of the algorithm, but the performance gains can be significant if handled in a way to avoid excessive synchronization.

  • Host AngularJS (Html5Mode) in ASP.NET vNext

    - by Shaun
    Originally posted on: http://geekswithblogs.net/shaunxu/archive/2014/06/10/host-angularjs-html5mode-in-asp.net-vnext.aspxMicrosoft had announced ASP.NET vNext in BUILD and TechED recently and as a developer, I found that we can add features into one ASP.NET vNext application such as MVC, WebAPI, SignalR, etc.. Also it's cross platform which means I can host ASP.NET on Windows, Linux and OS X.   If you are following my blog you should knew that I'm currently working on a project which uses ASP.NET WebAPI, SignalR and AngularJS. Currently the AngularJS part is hosted by Express in Node.js while WebAPI and SignalR are hosted in ASP.NET. I was looking for a solution to host all of them in one platform so that my SignalR can utilize WebSocket. Currently AngularJS and SignalR are hosted in the same domain but different port so it has to use ServerSendEvent. It can be upgraded to WebSocket if I host both of them in the same port.   Host AngularJS in ASP.NET vNext Static File Middleware ASP.NET vNext utilizes middleware pattern to register feature it uses, which is very similar as Express in Node.js. Since AngularJS is a pure client side framework in theory what I need to do is to use ASP.NET vNext as a static file server. This is very easy as there's a build-in middleware shipped alone with ASP.NET vNext. Assuming I have "index.html" as below. 1: <html data-ng-app="demo"> 2: <head> 3: <script type="text/javascript" src="angular.js" /> 4: <script type="text/javascript" src="angular-ui-router.js" /> 5: <script type="text/javascript" src="app.js" /> 6: </head> 7: <body> 8: <h1>ASP.NET vNext with AngularJS</h1> 9: <div> 10: <a href="javascript:void(0)" data-ui-sref="view1">View 1</a> | 11: <a href="javascript:void(0)" data-ui-sref="view2">View 2</a> 12: </div> 13: <div data-ui-view></div> 14: </body> 15: </html> And the AngularJS JavaScript file as below. Notices that I have two views which only contains one line literal indicates the view name. 1: 'use strict'; 2:  3: var app = angular.module('demo', ['ui.router']); 4:  5: app.config(['$stateProvider', '$locationProvider', function ($stateProvider, $locationProvider) { 6: $stateProvider.state('view1', { 7: url: '/view1', 8: templateUrl: 'view1.html', 9: controller: 'View1Ctrl' }); 10:  11: $stateProvider.state('view2', { 12: url: '/view2', 13: templateUrl: 'view2.html', 14: controller: 'View2Ctrl' }); 15: }]); 16:  17: app.controller('View1Ctrl', function ($scope) { 18: }); 19:  20: app.controller('View2Ctrl', function ($scope) { 21: }); All AngularJS files are located in "app" folder and my ASP.NET vNext files are besides it. The "project.json" contains all dependencies I need to host static file server. 1: { 2: "dependencies": { 3: "Helios" : "0.1-alpha-*", 4: "Microsoft.AspNet.FileSystems": "0.1-alpha-*", 5: "Microsoft.AspNet.Http": "0.1-alpha-*", 6: "Microsoft.AspNet.StaticFiles": "0.1-alpha-*", 7: "Microsoft.AspNet.Hosting": "0.1-alpha-*", 8: "Microsoft.AspNet.Server.WebListener": "0.1-alpha-*" 9: }, 10: "commands": { 11: "web": "Microsoft.AspNet.Hosting server=Microsoft.AspNet.Server.WebListener server.urls=http://localhost:22222" 12: }, 13: "configurations" : { 14: "net45" : { 15: }, 16: "k10" : { 17: "System.Diagnostics.Contracts": "4.0.0.0", 18: "System.Security.Claims" : "0.1-alpha-*" 19: } 20: } 21: } Below is "Startup.cs" which is the entry file of my ASP.NET vNext. What I need to do is to let my application use FileServerMiddleware. 1: using System; 2: using Microsoft.AspNet.Builder; 3: using Microsoft.AspNet.FileSystems; 4: using Microsoft.AspNet.StaticFiles; 5:  6: namespace Shaun.AspNet.Plugins.AngularServer.Demo 7: { 8: public class Startup 9: { 10: public void Configure(IBuilder app) 11: { 12: app.UseFileServer(new FileServerOptions() { 13: EnableDirectoryBrowsing = true, 14: FileSystem = new PhysicalFileSystem(System.IO.Path.Combine(AppDomain.CurrentDomain.BaseDirectory, "app")) 15: }); 16: } 17: } 18: } Next, I need to create "NuGet.Config" file in the PARENT folder so that when I run "kpm restore" command later it can find ASP.NET vNext NuGet package successfully. 1: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?> 2: <configuration> 3: <packageSources> 4: <add key="AspNetVNext" value="https://www.myget.org/F/aspnetvnext/api/v2" /> 5: <add key="NuGet.org" value="https://nuget.org/api/v2/" /> 6: </packageSources> 7: <packageSourceCredentials> 8: <AspNetVNext> 9: <add key="Username" value="aspnetreadonly" /> 10: <add key="ClearTextPassword" value="4d8a2d9c-7b80-4162-9978-47e918c9658c" /> 11: </AspNetVNext> 12: </packageSourceCredentials> 13: </configuration> Now I need to run "kpm restore" to resolve all dependencies of my application. Finally, use "k web" to start the application which will be a static file server on "app" sub folder in the local 22222 port.   Support AngularJS Html5Mode AngularJS works well in previous demo. But you will note that there is a "#" in the browser address. This is because by default AngularJS adds "#" next to its entry page so ensure all request will be handled by this entry page. For example, in this case my entry page is "index.html", so when I clicked "View 1" in the page the address will be changed to "/#/view1" which means it still tell the web server I'm still looking for "index.html". This works, but makes the address looks ugly. Hence AngularJS introduces a feature called Html5Mode, which will get rid off the annoying "#" from the address bar. Below is the "app.js" with Html5Mode enabled, just one line of code. 1: 'use strict'; 2:  3: var app = angular.module('demo', ['ui.router']); 4:  5: app.config(['$stateProvider', '$locationProvider', function ($stateProvider, $locationProvider) { 6: $stateProvider.state('view1', { 7: url: '/view1', 8: templateUrl: 'view1.html', 9: controller: 'View1Ctrl' }); 10:  11: $stateProvider.state('view2', { 12: url: '/view2', 13: templateUrl: 'view2.html', 14: controller: 'View2Ctrl' }); 15:  16: // enable html5mode 17: $locationProvider.html5Mode(true); 18: }]); 19:  20: app.controller('View1Ctrl', function ($scope) { 21: }); 22:  23: app.controller('View2Ctrl', function ($scope) { 24: }); Then let's went to the root path of our website and click "View 1" you will see there's no "#" in the address. But the problem is, if we hit F5 the browser will be turn to blank. This is because in this mode the browser told the web server I want static file named "view1" but there's no file on the server. So underlying our web server, which is built by ASP.NET vNext, responded 404. To fix this problem we need to create our own ASP.NET vNext middleware. What it needs to do is firstly try to respond the static file request with the default StaticFileMiddleware. If the response status code was 404 then change the request path value to the entry page and try again. 1: public class AngularServerMiddleware 2: { 3: private readonly AngularServerOptions _options; 4: private readonly RequestDelegate _next; 5: private readonly StaticFileMiddleware _innerMiddleware; 6:  7: public AngularServerMiddleware(RequestDelegate next, AngularServerOptions options) 8: { 9: _next = next; 10: _options = options; 11:  12: _innerMiddleware = new StaticFileMiddleware(next, options.FileServerOptions.StaticFileOptions); 13: } 14:  15: public async Task Invoke(HttpContext context) 16: { 17: // try to resolve the request with default static file middleware 18: await _innerMiddleware.Invoke(context); 19: Console.WriteLine(context.Request.Path + ": " + context.Response.StatusCode); 20: // route to root path if the status code is 404 21: // and need support angular html5mode 22: if (context.Response.StatusCode == 404 && _options.Html5Mode) 23: { 24: context.Request.Path = _options.EntryPath; 25: await _innerMiddleware.Invoke(context); 26: Console.WriteLine(">> " + context.Request.Path + ": " + context.Response.StatusCode); 27: } 28: } 29: } We need an option class where user can specify the host root path and the entry page path. 1: public class AngularServerOptions 2: { 3: public FileServerOptions FileServerOptions { get; set; } 4:  5: public PathString EntryPath { get; set; } 6:  7: public bool Html5Mode 8: { 9: get 10: { 11: return EntryPath.HasValue; 12: } 13: } 14:  15: public AngularServerOptions() 16: { 17: FileServerOptions = new FileServerOptions(); 18: EntryPath = PathString.Empty; 19: } 20: } We also need an extension method so that user can append this feature in "Startup.cs" easily. 1: public static class AngularServerExtension 2: { 3: public static IBuilder UseAngularServer(this IBuilder builder, string rootPath, string entryPath) 4: { 5: var options = new AngularServerOptions() 6: { 7: FileServerOptions = new FileServerOptions() 8: { 9: EnableDirectoryBrowsing = false, 10: FileSystem = new PhysicalFileSystem(System.IO.Path.Combine(AppDomain.CurrentDomain.BaseDirectory, rootPath)) 11: }, 12: EntryPath = new PathString(entryPath) 13: }; 14:  15: builder.UseDefaultFiles(options.FileServerOptions.DefaultFilesOptions); 16:  17: return builder.Use(next => new AngularServerMiddleware(next, options).Invoke); 18: } 19: } Now with these classes ready we will change our "Startup.cs", use this middleware replace the default one, tell the server try to load "index.html" file if it cannot find resource. The code below is just for demo purpose. I just tried to load "index.html" in all cases once the StaticFileMiddleware returned 404. In fact we need to validation to make sure this is an AngularJS route request instead of a normal static file request. 1: using System; 2: using Microsoft.AspNet.Builder; 3: using Microsoft.AspNet.FileSystems; 4: using Microsoft.AspNet.StaticFiles; 5: using Shaun.AspNet.Plugins.AngularServer; 6:  7: namespace Shaun.AspNet.Plugins.AngularServer.Demo 8: { 9: public class Startup 10: { 11: public void Configure(IBuilder app) 12: { 13: app.UseAngularServer("app", "/index.html"); 14: } 15: } 16: } Now let's run "k web" again and try to refresh our browser and we can see the page loaded successfully. In the console window we can find the original request got 404 and we try to find "index.html" and return the correct result.   Summary In this post I introduced how to use ASP.NET vNext to host AngularJS application as a static file server. I also demonstrated how to extend ASP.NET vNext, so that it supports AngularJS Html5Mode. I’m seeing a type of API emerge which serves static or long-lived resources, which are mostly read-only and have a controlled process to update the data that gets served. Think of something like an app configuration API, where you want a central location for changeable settings. You could use this server side to store database connection strings and keep all your instances in sync, or it could be used client side to push changes out to all users (and potentially driving A/B or MVT testing). That’s a good candidate for a RESTful API which makes proper use of HTTP expiration and validation caching to minimise traffic, but really you want a front end UI where you can edit the current config that the API returns and publish your changes. Sound like a Content Mangement System would be a good fit? I’ve been looking at that and it’s a great fit for this scenario. You get a lot of what you need out of the box, the amount of custom code you need to write is minimal, and you get a whole lot of extra stuff from using CMS which is very useful, but probably not something you’d build if you had to put together a quick UI over your API content (like a publish workflow, fine-grained security and an audit trail). You typically use a CMS for HTML resources, but it’s simple to expose JSON instead – or to do content negotiation to support both, so you can open a resource in a browser and see a nice visual representation, or request it with: Accept=application/json and get the same content rendered as JSON for the app to use. Enter Umbraco Umbraco is an open source .NET CMS that’s been around for a while. It has very good adoption, a lively community and a good release cycle. It’s easy to use, has all the functionality you need for a CMS-driven API, and it’s scalable (although you won’t necessarily put much scale on the CMS layer). In the rest of this post, I’ll build out a simple app config API using Umbraco. We’ll define the structure of the configuration resource by creating a new Document Type and setting custom properties; then we’ll build a very simple Razor template to return configuration documents as JSON; then create a resource and see how it looks. And we’ll look at how you could build this into a wider solution. If you want to try this for yourself, it’s ultra easy – there’s an Umbraco image in the Azure Website gallery, so all you need to to is create a new Website, select Umbraco from the image and complete the installation. It will create a SQL Azure website to store all the content, as well as a Website instance for editing and accessing content. They’re standard Azure resources, so you can scale them as you need. The default install creates a starter site for some HTML content, which you can use to learn your way around (or just delete). 1. Create Configuration Document Type In Umbraco you manage content by creating and modifying documents, and every document has a known type, defining what properties it holds. We’ll create a new Document Type to describe some basic config settings. In the Settings section from the left navigation (spanner icon), expand Document Types and Master, hit the ellipsis and select to create a new Document Type: This will base your new type off the Master type, which gives you some existing properties that we’ll use – like the Page Title which will be the resource URL. In the Generic Properties tab for the new Document Type, you set the properties you’ll be able to edit and return for the resource: Here I’ve added a text string where I’ll set a default cache lifespan, an image which I can use for a banner display, and a date which could show the user when the next release is due. This is the sort of thing that sits nicely in an app config API. It’s likely to change during the life of the product, but not very often, so it’s good to have a centralised place where you can make and publish changes easily and safely. It also enables A/B and MVT testing, as you can change the response each client gets based on your set logic, and their apps will behave differently without needing a release. 2. Define the response template Now we’ve defined the structure of the resource (as a document), in Umbraco we can define a C# Razor template to say how that resource gets rendered to the client. If you only want to provide JSON, it’s easy to render the content of the document by building each property in the response (Umbraco uses dynamic objects so you can specify document properties as object properties), or you can support content negotiation with very little effort. Here’s a template to render the document as HTML or JSON depending on the Accept header, using JSON.NET for the API rendering: @inherits Umbraco.Web.Mvc.UmbracoTemplatePage @using Newtonsoft.Json @{ Layout = null; } @if(UmbracoContext.HttpContext.Request.Headers["accept"] != null &amp;&amp; UmbracoContext.HttpContext.Request.Headers["accept"] == "application/json") { Response.ContentType = "application/json"; @Html.Raw(JsonConvert.SerializeObject(new { cacheLifespan = CurrentPage.cacheLifespan, bannerImageUrl = CurrentPage.bannerImage, nextReleaseDate = CurrentPage.nextReleaseDate })) } else { <h1>App configuration</h1> <p>Cache lifespan: <b>@CurrentPage.cacheLifespan</b></p> <p>Banner Image: </p> <img src="@CurrentPage.bannerImage"> <p>Next Release Date: <b>@CurrentPage.nextReleaseDate</b></p> } That’s a rough-and ready example of what you can do. You could make it completely generic and just render all the document’s properties as JSON, but having a specific template for each resource gives you control over what gets sent out. And the templates are evaluated at run-time, so if you need to change the output – or extend it, say to add caching response headers – you just edit the template and save, and the next client request gets rendered from the new template. No code to build and ship. 3. Create the content With your document type created, in  the Content pane you can create a new instance of that document, where Umbraco gives you a nice UI to input values for the properties we set up on the Document Type: Here I’ve set the cache lifespan to an xs:duration value, uploaded an image for the banner and specified a release date. Each property gets the appropriate input control – text box, file upload and date picker. At the top of the page is the name of the resource – myapp in this example. That specifies the URL for the resource, so if I had a DNS entry pointing to my Umbraco instance, I could access the config with a URL like http://static.x.y.z.com/config/myapp. The setup is all done now, so when we publish this resource it’ll be available to access.  4. Access the resource Now if you open  that URL in the browser, you’ll see the HTML version rendered: - complete with the  image and formatted date. Umbraco lets you save changes and preview them before publishing, so the HTML view could be a good way of showing editors their changes in a usable view, before they confirm them. If you browse the same URL from a REST client, specifying the Accept=application/json request header, you get this response:   That’s the exact same resource, with a managed UI to publish it, being accessed as HTML or JSON with a tiny amount of effort. 5. The wider landscape If you have fairy stable content to expose as an API, I think  this approach is really worth considering. Umbraco scales very nicely, but in a typical solution you probably wouldn’t need it to. When you have additional requirements, like logging API access requests - but doing it out-of-band so clients aren’t impacted, you can put a very thin API layer on top of Umbraco, and cache the CMS responses in your API layer:   Here the API does a passthrough to CMS, so the CMS still controls the content, but it caches the response. If the response is cached for 1 minute, then Umbraco only needs to handle 1 request per minute (multiplied by the number of API instances), so if you need to support 1000s of request per second, you’re scaling a thin, simple API layer rather than having to scale the more complex CMS infrastructure (including the database). This diagram also shows an approach to logging, by asynchronously publishing a message to a queue (Redis in this case), which can be picked up later and persisted by a different process. Does it work? Beautifully. Using Azure, I spiked the solution above (including the Redis logging framework which I’ll blog about later) in half a day. That included setting up different roles in Umbraco to demonstrate a managed workflow for publishing changes, and a couple of document types representing different resources. Is it maintainable? We have three moving parts, which are all managed resources in Azure –  an Azure Website for Umbraco which may need a couple of instances for HA (or may not, depending on how long the content can be cached), a message queue (Redis is in preview in Azure, but you can easily use Service Bus Queues if performance is less of a concern), and the Web Role for the API. Two of the components are off-the-shelf, from open source projects, and the only custom code is the API which is very simple. Does it scale? Pretty nicely. With a single Umbraco instance running as an Azure Website, and with 4x instances for my API layer (Standard sized Web Roles), I got just under 4,000 requests per second served reliably, with a Worker Role in the background saving the access logs. So we had a nice UI to publish app config changes, with a friendly Web preview and a publishing workflow, capable of supporting 14 million requests in an hour, with less than a day’s effort. Worth considering if you’re publishing long-lived resources through your API.
