• SSH Keys Authentication keeps asking for password

  Im trying to set access from ServerA(SunOS) to ServerB(Some custom Linux with Keyboard Interactive login) with SSH Keys. As a proof of concept I was able to do it between 2 virtual machines. Now in my real life scenario it isnt working. I created the keys in ServerA, copied them to ServerB, chmod'd .ssh folders to 700 on both ServerA,B. What could be happening? EDIT WITH ANSWER: Problem was that I didnt have those settings enabled in the sshd_config (Refer to accepted answer) AND that while pasting the key from ServerA to ServerB it would interpret the key as 3 separate lines. What I did was, in case you cant use ssh-copy-id like I couldnt. Paste the first line of your key in your "ServerB" authorized_keys file WITHOUT the last 2 characters, then type yourself the missing characters from line 1 and the first one from line 2, this will prevent adding a "new line" between the first and second line of the key. Repeat with the 3d line.

• standard deviation on excel

  so I have 3 data sets, which all came from the first data set using the excel program. all consisted of random numbers from =randbetween(0,100) starting from A2:A102 which is 100 integers. for data set b I had to enter=SUM(A2+5) press enter and drag it down to get the integers for cells B2:B102 and for C I had to do multiplication t get it. I did =PRODUCT(A2:A102*5). so everything was taken from data set A. now I did the formulas needed to do sample standard dev and mean(average) . for data set a and b the standard deviations were the same but the mean was larger in data set B of course because I added 5 to each cell in set A. my question is why wouldn't the standard deviation be the same for data set C also? if im using the info from data set A? and how do I calculate the standard deviation (sample) by hand so I can explain why the standard dev doesn't change but the mean does. I don't know what numbers to include in the formula for sample standard deviation.

• fail2ban iptable rule wont block

  So I set up fail2ban on my Debian 7 server, still I've been getting hit a lot and I dont know why is not blocking properly. The regex works, it recognizes the attempts but it seems the iptables rules it insert wont work, this is how it look iptables ouput looks after fail2ban tries to block. • Server-side SSH jump hosts

  Trying to figure out server side SSH jump hosts logic. Current network schema: [Client] <--> [Server A: hostname: a.com] <--> [Server B] [Client] <--> [Server A: hostname: b.com] <--> [Server C] Server A responds to both DNS records. Possible flow: Client opens a ssh connection with ssh [email protected]. Server A accepts it and should automatically jump user onto Server B with ssh user2@server_b.com. Client opens a ssh connection with ssh [email protected]. Server A accepts it and should automatically just user onto Server C with ssh user2@server_c.com. In other words, client should be able to connect to the target without performing any local configuration, assuming that we have a stock ssh config. The problem with ssh jumps is that user has to define hosts in local ~/.ssh/config file, which is not acceptable in my case. It needs to be a default sshd behavior. Im aware that you can define a custom command ~/.ssh/authorized_keys on server, but i dont think there is a way to properly detect source hostname where user tries to connect. It is possible at all ?

• How intrusive is using VPN?

  My company lets us work from home sometimes using VPN (during weather emergencies and stuff). When logging in a big window comes up that says the network is private and for employees only and that there's no right to privacy while using VPN. It makes sense that they don't want people poking around their network but I wonder if the company can use the connection to look around my computer while I'm connected. I'm not entirely computer-illiterate but I'm not a networks person at all so the technical documents I've found don't help me. Is that possible, and if so to what degree? UPDATE Thanks Mark. The funneling thing is what I was really asking about. Mostly I was worried that I would already have some IM conversation open or log into eBay forgetting that the VPN was open and that my company IT people would see it or that they would log my eBay password. Thanks again. ANOTHER UPDATE What if my son wants to play online poker or Warcraft etcetera while I have VPN on to work? Can my company think I'm the one playing if I am not typing often?

  Im still learning server things so hope the title is descriptive enough. Basically i have sub.domain.com that i want to run on nginx at port 8090. I want to leave apache alone and have it catch all default traffic at port 80. so i am trying something with a virtual name host to proxy pass to sub.domain.com:8090, nothing working yet and go no idea what the right syntax could be. any ideas? most of what i found was to pass TO apache FROM nginx, but i want to the do the opposite. • Cant configure DNS properly on centos

  I am on a VPS i must manage my own. I have network problems because in the last days many of my users report they cant enter my site from my domain and seems like Google and Facebook cant either (this never happened before). However i can enter my site without problems and so many other people as well. So i tested by making a php include like this <?php include 'http://mysite.com/somepage.php'; ?> and i get this error: Warning: include(): php_network_getaddresses: getaddrinfo failed: Name or service not known in I even tried by including content from yahoo.com or facebook and didnt work either. However the includes will work if i use IPs instead of domains. Do i have a DNS problem or something? What can i do to fix it? • Windows 7 mouse multi selection on windows explorer with CTRL and point to select / single click to open

  This is something that have annoyed me since i changed to Windows 7. I don't do double click for a long time now since windows introduced 1 click selection (Folder Options Click items as follows Single click to open an item). The problem is, when i click Control and hover over the items, they select/deselect automatically every small amount of mouse movement i make. What i want is to select/deselect the items only when i enter/exit them. So to deselect an item im hovering, i have to move the mouse out of it, and then back in. I'm using Intellimouse Explorer official drivers. (edit) Here's another related annoyance: When you are hovering something and move the mouse inside other item (Holding Ctrl) The new item may or may not be selected. If you continue moving the mouse it gets selected/deselected as you move. (more edit) I have found that the parameter HKCU\Control Panel\Mouse\MouseHoverHeight / MouseHoverWidth have some influence here. If it's set to 2, the item select/deselect really quickly as you move the mouse. When set to larger numbers, its slower. But setting to 20 or 200 don't seem to be much different.

  Ok I will try to explain my issue effectively. I am making a GPA sheet in which the value out of 100 is computer in to a GPA value and then in to a letter. However here comes the problem.... I have tried to use the outcome in J6 to do Vlookup or another if formula, however excel does not seem to recognize the value in J6. For example: =VLOOKUP(j6,B3:C15,2,FALSE)... this returns N/A however if I enter =VLOOKUP(3.25,B3:C15,2,FALSE) it gives me what im looking for. It seems that excel will not register the outcome of my formula as a number. What can I do please?

• Localhost stop resolving/serving local site after a few clicks IIS 7.5

  previously I have searched tried to find the answer from a previous question, however Im not sure it was resolved. I could comment on the question to find more, so decided to post a new question. Previous question found (http://serverfault.com/questions/314333/localhost-stop-resolving-after-a-few-minutes-iis-7-5) So I set up a new website on Windows 7 IIS 7.5 ... I give it a host header and in the hosts file I add the entry for 127.0.0.1 and browse the site. After about the second or third time of trying to click around on the local site, it starts hanging ... just seems to be looking like its trying to load, but just eventually comes back in Firefox with "The connection was reset" (takes about 30-50 secs before this happens). I then used a program like CurrPorts, to view the ports that are listening, and for the initial request it all seems good. Now after the site is hanging, I dont see the hit coming through anymore. Its as if the browser loses touch with IIS or something. If I open a different browser, works fine for about 2 clicks or so, then same problem. Anyone know what could be causing this? Or how to resolve?

• Setting up logging for a remote backup script

  So I wrote up a short script that I am planning to run via a cron job daily to package up my site files and send them to a remote location. I also plan to incorporate DB dumps, but I have not gotten that far yet. My issue today however is that Im am uncertain how to log the output of each command for errors, warnings, or other pertinent information the command may output. I would also like to install sometype of fail safe so if something goes horribly wrong the script will stop dead in its tracks and notify me via email or something. Ok the email thing is not as critical, but would be nice. Does anybody have any ideas for that? Here is what I have so far.   Im a student and I have been assigned the task of creating a logical network diagram for the following scenario There are 2 buildings, the first is the head office and the second is the branch. The data centre is in the head office, it contains domain controller, mail server, file server and a web server. it provides wired and wireless access to the staff. the branch building is new and it does not have a network. The two buildings must be connected using a VPN connection. The branch building will not have any servers but just network devices that will provide the connectivity, the users in the branch building will be connected to the head office over the VPN. I had created a diagram based on this scenario, but my teacher rejected it saying that it does not follow Cisco hierarchical Model and the servers were not placed correctly in the diagram. I just wanted some help in this matter so that I Can create my network diagram correctly. If anyone could upload a picture of how the logical diagram should be for this scenario will be helpful, any other resources would also be great.

  currently we ran into some issues with our mail server setup. im preparing a list of actions that we should enforce and use in order to maintain a proper email solution within our company. we have around 80 exchange users, and send mass emails out almost on a monthly bases to 20,000 + customers each time.. the checklist i currently have: 1) mcafee mxlogic 'cloud' anti-spam functionality for incoming message. 2) antivirus on each computer in company 3) antivirus on exchange and DNS servers 4) setup SPF record 5) setup DKIM 6) setup domainkey 7) setup senderID 8) submit spf to microsoft, yahoo, etc. for 'whitelist' purposes. 9) configure size limits for messages in exchange to safe numbers 10) i have 2 outside IPs for my email server, incase one gets blacklisted, switch to the backup. 11) my internet site rests on a different ip than the mail server 12) all mass emails for company sent through 3rd party company (listtrak.com) 13) setup domain alias, media, enews, and bounce for the 3rd party mass mail software. 14) verify the setup using [email protected] 15) configure group policy and our opendns.org account to prevent unwanted actions and website viewing mass emails: 1) schedule them to send different amounts at different times (1,000 at 10am, 1,000 at 4pm, 1,000 10am next day).. 2) setup user prefences, decide what they want to receive ect. ( there interests) 3) send a more steady flow of email, maybe 100 a week with top new products instead of 20,000k every other month.. if anyone has suggestions or additions/subtractions to this checklist they are greatly appreciated. thank you

• Svchost.exe connecting to different IPs with remote port 445

  Im using Windows XP Professional SP2. Whenever I start my Windows, svchost.exe starts connecting to all the possible IPs on LAN like from 192.168.1.2 to 192.168.1.200. The local port ranges from 1000-1099 and the remote port being 445. After it's done with the local IPs, it starts connecting to other random IPs. I tried blocking connections to the port 445 using the local security polices but it didn't work. Is there any possible way I could prevent svchost from connecting to these IPs without involving any firewall installed? My PC slows down due to the load. I scanned my PC with MalwareBytes and found out it was infected with a worm, it's deleted now but still svchost is connecting to the IPs. I also found out that in my Windows Firewall settings, under Internet Control Message Protocol (ICMP), there's a tick on "allow incoming echo request" (usually disabled) which is locked and I can't disable it. Its description is as follows Messages sent to this computer will be repeated back to the sender. This is used for trouble shooting for e.g to ping a machine. Requests of this type are automatically allowed if TCP port 445 is enabled. Any solutions? I can't bear going with the reinstalling Windows phase again.

• Bootable ISO to USB stick xp quickest method

  My dog took a leak on my PC when I went out (ye funny), now it reandomly restarts - I'm convinced the HDD is failing because the Windows seagate diagnostic program fails on a few tests. I want to run this prior to windows in an attempt to try and recover sectors, the program includes an iso which can be written to cd and booted, but i dont have any cd's. I tried using unetbootin to create the bootable usb from the iso file (SeaToolsDOS222ALL.576.ISO) but it doesnt work. When i boot from the usb hdd unetbootin loads with "default" in the menu. No joy booting though. I checked the usb hdd in windows and all the files are there, extracted from the iso file, wont boot though. Any ideas? Im using windows xp. More info - when the computer restarts (like i just did now) it constantly reaches the end of POST and then restarts in infinite loop. If I pull the power cable out it will get back into windows, the longer i leave it between attempts, the longer I am able to stay in windows until it restarts. i.e if i leave the power cable out 5 minutes it will stay operable for longer than if i had left it out for only a few seconds.

• Lost user account for Windows Vista

  Hello, I'm trying to help a friend who's lost her user account in Vista. I know there's supposed to be a way you can boot the computer from the vista installation disc and create an admin account you can later login with, but her installation disc is in Australia and her laptop in London. Is there any other way to get in? Or would it be better to try and access just the harddrive? She's mainly concerned with getting all her data off it. As for how she lost the account, I'll let her explain in her words. :) My computer basically got some virus and now is up sh*t creek. it told me i had this cryptic thingy majiggy was missing and then this fake virus told me i needed to scan my computer. SO i tried to do malware thing but it kept shutting my computer down. ANYWAY...now its it will only open up with 'launch startup repair' and has got rid of my settings for logging in and wants me to be 'other user' which i have no password or username for'...so basically im stuffed. • Issue with a secure login - Why am I being redirected to the insecure login?

  Im having some issues getting a website working at my place of work. The issue was rasised when a "double login" occurred from the secure login site. The second login was actually being prompted by the HTTP domain and not HTTPS. In essence the situation is like this: The user navigates to https://mysite.com/something The login prompt pops up Enter username and password The user is presented with ANOTHER login prompt (IE will say its insecure, and the address bar reflects that) If the user puts in their password the insecure one, they will login to the insecure site. if they hit cancel it will present them with a 401 page Navigating back to https://somesite.com/something will by pass the login prompt and log them in to the secure site automatically (cookie maybe) I'm a bit confused to why the user isnt being logged in properly the first time (redirected to non-ssl) but any consecutive login will be okay? I've been trying to use fiddler to see what is happening after the user puts in their password the first time and trying to get fiddler to automatically login to the site (with no luck) I believe the website in question is using Basic Digest authentication. • trying to setup multiple primary partitions on ubuntu linux [migrated]

  I currently have ubuntu desktop installed on a harddrive. I want to partition the harddrive so that I can reserve 30 gigs for ubuntu server and 30 gigs for ubuntu desktop. The drive has 300 gigs available. Right now I am booting from dvd drive and installing ubuntu server. I selected "Guided partitioning" and created a 30 gig primary partition of Ext4 journaling filesystem, set "yes, format it" for format partition and set bootable flag to on. I intend to use this 30 gig partition to hold ubuntu server and allow me to boot from it. Now I have two other partitions. They are both set to "logical", one is currently using 285.8 gigs and is using ext4 (when I try to set bootable flag to true, it gives a warning "You are trying to set the bootable flag on a logical partition. The bootable flag is only useful on the primary partitions"). More alarming it says "No existing file system was detected in this partition". Actually, Im thinking that this is the parittion that is supposed to be holding my current Ubuntu Desktop. And of course I want this to be bootable and be a primary partition, so I could dual boot from this and the server partition. Now the third partition is also set to logical and it is being used as swap area. My question is regarding that second partition. Its supposed to be a primary partition thats holding my existing ubuntu desktop edition. How do I switch it to primary and to make sure that its pointing to my existing desktop installation?

• Conflicts with file from package mysql-5.0.77

  I'm trying to install APC (Alternative PHP Cache) on a CentOs dedicated server. I've everything done apart from configuring phpize. Running :yum -y install php-devel gives me the following error file /usr/share/mysql/charsets/Index.xml from install of mysql-libs-5.1.57-1.el5.art.x86_64 conflicts with file from package mysql-5.0.77-4.el5_5.3.i386 etc etc for other languages So, i think the mysql version i have is too old & i more than likely need to upgrade mysql to version 5.1. Im reluctant to do this as a) its a live server (although only 3/4 domains) b) ive read ill read to recompile php if i upgrade To add to this i have plesk installed for managing domains & might need reinstalling/reconfiguring also. sorry for the long intro but its my first post & best to give as much info as possible, so my question is basically Is there any way i can run :yum -y install php-devel to get phpize working to complete installation of APC for the version of mysql i currently have installed? ie 5.0.77

• Dual Monitor + Virtual Desktop software (plus for cube)

  I've recently purchased another monitor, my first one being a TV and being much larger. I now sit at a desk and use my shiny new 24" LED more often, but I like to extend the desktop into the TV. The problem presented with this is to save power and the longevity of my 47" VIZIO, I try to keep it off when possible. What I'm seeking sounds very simple - If any of you have ever used Compiz or Deskspace (Yod'm) - You'll know what im referring to when I talk about a "cube." The most important functionality I'm looking for is the ability to scroll desktop contents between both displays and virtual desktops. Deskspace does and excellent job of presenting an attractive cube, but it creates a separate cube and virtual desktop space for the second extended monitor (now the TV) - Again, what I'm looking to do is scroll between virtual desktops, by passing through both monitors. The net effect of this functionality would allow me to scroll the contents of the extended monitor to the first monitor should a window get caught there without having to turn on the TV. So imagine the horizontal portion of a cube as being actual real monitors - is there anything that allows one to rotate desktops between displays?

  I am looking for a jabber client with some specific functions. I have spent 1½ day looking for one and it is getting tiresome. Clients that I have been using, that have what I need, but I am not interesting for a reason in are: Pidgin, does not show complete messages in their popups. Miranda IM, I have a constant disconnect issue that does not seem to be resolved in my case. What I need are: Popups A popup that shows broadcasts to users. A popup that show when my username is typed in a conference chat. I need to be able to view the full message in the popup. No configuration of a theme to make this enabled, or if there is a working theme for it already. Preferable placement is on the top right of the screen. Able to 'popup' when running full screen applications, much like games. Conferences Easy access to bookmarked conferences. I do not want to go through submenus to rejoin a disconnected or closed conference. If I close the conference window I want to be connected to the conference until I exit the client. Tabbed interface. Configuration Sober configurations, options are great but there is a limit and the above needs to be availble in the options in a understandable manner. What I wish for: MSN Not needed! If it is avaible then it is a big plus. Facebook Not needed! If it is avaible then it is a big plus. Conferences/chats Not needed! Eyecandy is always nice.

• What should I use to ping multiple IPs and get notified of time outs?

  I've been using MultiPing to ping hundreds of IPs (from access points and such) and check their performance (packet loss, latency) and uptime. The program is very easy to use, but I was wondering if someone could recommend me something that would work better and that would also work in Linux. The features I'm looking for are: Notification Types: At least desktop notifications and SMS, but it would be great if it also had e-mail, IM, or other types of notifications. (MultiPing has some of these, but they don't work too well.) Being notified about the root problem only: Since some devices are dependent on others, I'd like to be notified only about the root problem. E.g. Let's say I have A[x.x.x.222]B[x.x.x.33C[x.x.x.44]D[x.x.x.55], and B goes down, therefore C and D will also be down. Is it possible to get a notification only about B being down? Light on resources. Ideally multiplatform or at least available for both Linux and Windows. I've heard about Nagios and Shinken being used for monitoring. Would you recommend that I use something of the sort or would that be too much for my needs? If using Nagios, Shinken, or similar software is recommended, can anyone tell me what sites I should go to or what books I should get that would be good for someone who is totally new at this? I'd appreciate any suggestions.

• how to throttle http requests on a linux machine?

  EDIT: here is the summery: i need to reduce max connections preferably system wide on Ubuntu 11.04 but at least within Google Chrome. i do not need or want to throttle bandwidth, Verizon seems to only care about the number of connections so that is all i want to change. also, i don't want to use firefox unless i have to, i have three other machines all using chrome and synced and i just prefer it over firefox. i use tethering for my home internet connection via my verizon cell phone. without paying for it. this works just fine for streaming netflix via my nintendo wii and pretty much every other conceivable use ive had for it. except, during heavy usage with multiple tabs open on my laptop, the network connection on my phone will just turn off, then on again, then off, but it never fully connects. i think, based on this and other questions that this is caused by verizon getting too many http requests from my phone. is there some software, script, setting or otherwise that would allow me to throttle my requests to say, 5 or 10 or whatever it turns out is 1 less than verizon is looking for, so that my cell's network connection is not lost? i would far prefer a slow down rather than complete shut off of my internet connection. i am almost certain is from quantity of requests and not related to data, because, as i mentioned, netflix will run all day without a hitch, and that uses more data than anything else i would be doing. if i had a router i am pretty sure there are settings i could easily change to only allow so many requests at a time ... but in this case, my phone is my router, so no settings. im using ubuntu 11.04 on my netbook with an htc incredible on verizon (not that the phone details are relevant) i have been trying to figure this out for quite some time, currently the only fix is ensure that all requests are stopped and then sometimes it works again, other times i have to manually turn my 3g service off and then back on. thank you so much for any assistance!
