  • What framework would allow for the largest coverage of freelance developers in the media/digital mar

    This question is not about which is the best, it is about which makes the most business sense to use as a company's platform of choice for ongoing freelance development. I'm currently trying to decide what framework to move my company in regarding frameworks for web application work. Options are ASP.NET MVC Django CakePHP/Symfony etc.. Struts Pearl on Rails Please feel free to add more to the discussion. I currently work in ASP.NET MVC in my Spare time, and find it incredibly enjoyable to work with. It is my first experince with an MVC framework for the web, so I can't talk on the others. The reason for not pushing this at the company is that I feel that there are not many developers in the Media/Marketing world who would work with this, so it may be hard to extend the team, or at least cost more. I would like to move into learning and pushing Django, partly to learn python, partly to feel a bit cooler (all my geeky friends use Java/Python/c++). Microsoft is the dark side to most company's I work with (Marketing/Media focused). But again I'm worried about developers in this sector. PHP seems like the natural choice, but I'm scared by the sheer amount of possible frameworks, and also that the quality of developer may be lower. I know there are great php developers out there, but how many of them know multiple frameworks? Are they similar enough that anyone decent at php can pick them up? Just put struts in the list as an option, but personally I live with a Java developer, and considering my experience with c#, I'm just not that interested in learning Java (selfish personal geeky reasons) Final option was a joke http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/radiolabs/2007/11/perl_on_rails.shtml

    I have a module written in servlets and needs to be recently moved to velocity framework So in the process I am rewriting the web.xml to create velocity servlet object whcih calls our original servlet . Now if this has to be moved to <servlet> <servlet-name>VeloServlet</servlet-name> <servlet-class>org.apache.velocity.tools.view.servlet.VelocityViewServlet</servlet-class> </servlet> How can we acheive this and what are all changes need to use the existing servlet as it is.     Hi All, Thanks for taking time to read through my question. Any guidance is really appreciated. I am using SL3 Navigation framework in my LOB application. I m currently using MVVM Light as the framework guidance. I have a datagrid consisting of employees and when the "user" clicks on "employee id link" in the datagrid, i am transferring the user to "Edit Page". I would like to transfer the "employee id" as query parameter to "edit page". The issue here is: I can access the query parameter in the EditStaffView.xaml.cs - which i don't want to do. protected override void OnNavigatedTo(NavigationEventArgs e) { if (this.NavigationContext.QueryString.ContainsKey("staffcode")) { string title = this.NavigationContext.QueryString["staffcode"]; } } I would like to retrieve the query parameter in my viewmodel and based on the query parameter, i will perform certain operations. In general: Ability to configure report (i.e., the hidden REPORT_ variables) Web FORM for setting report parameters (i.e., the report_ variables) Framework handles configuring database connection, report execution, etc. I don't care about the technical minutia on how the integration works. The example above is just one possibility of many.

  • IDE framework for a dynamic language?

    Let's say I have a super-wonderful new programming language, and I want there to be an IDE for it. What IDE platform/framework could I use to get this done efficiently? I mean things like: Collection of files in a project, searching them, tabbed/split editors etc. — the basics. Syntax highlighting and auto-indent/reformatting. Providing the user interface for code completion — hit tab, get a list (I'll have to implement the necessary partial evaluation myself (it's a dynamic language)). This is the feature I'm most wishing for. Built-in parser framework which is good at recovering from the sort of syntax errors occurring in code that is in the middle of being edited would be helpful. In-editor annotation of syntax/runtime error locations fed back from the language runtime. REPL (interactive evaluator) interaction with the same completion as in the editor. This system should be Linux/Mac/Windows cross-platform (in that priority order). Being implemented in Java (or rather, accepting language plugins written in Java) is possibly useful, but anything else is worth a try too.

  • Pro ASP.Net MVC 3 Entity Framework Sports Store tutorial

    Following the tutorial in the book "Pro ASP.Net MVC 3 Entity Framework" in Chapter 9 - Image Uploads section; asks that the Product class be updated with two new columns - public byte ImageData, and public string ImageType. It also directs that the database be updated with these two columns via the server explorer. After these updates, the discussion directs that the Entity Framework Conceptual Model be updated via the SportsStore.EDMX file. This file does not exist in the source code for the project, and was not used in the project to begin with. Obvious errata for the book. Adding the ADO.NET Entity Data Model to the Project then overrides the EFProduct reposistory (conceptual model used throughout the project) which inherits from the interface IProductsRepository; and results in errors within the mapping. If the project is debugged after the columns are added, an error is thrown related to the new added columns. Has anyone resolved this issue in the project? I haven't found any solutions so far.     What I want android to do: when user presses a single key, have the view respond, but do so without opening a text area and displaying the character associated with the key that was pressed, and without requiring that the Enter key be pressed, and without requiring that the user press Esc to make the text area go away. For example, when user presses "u" (and doesn't press Enter), that means "undo the last action", so the controller and model immediately undo the last action, then the view does an invalidate() and user sees that their last action has been undone. In other words the "u" key press should be silently processed, such that the only visual result is that user's last action has been undone. I've implemented OnKeyListener and provided an onKey() method: the class: public class MyGameView extends View implements OnKeyListener{ in the constructor: //2010jun06, phj: With onKey(), helps let this View consume key presses // before the framework gets a chance to consume the key press. setOnKeyListener((View.OnKeyListener)this); the onKey() method: public boolean onKey(View v, int keyCode, KeyEvent event) { if (keyCode == KeyEvent.KEYCODE_R) { Log.d("BWA", "In onKey received keycode associated with R."); } return true; // meaning the event (key press) has been consumed, so // the framework should not handle this event. } but when user presses "u" key on the emulator keypad, a textarea is opened at the bottom of the screen, the "u" charater is displayed there, and the onKey() method doesn't execute until user presses the Enter key.   • Is Google Mock a good mocking framework ?

    I am pioneering unit testing efforts at my company, and need need to choose a mocking framework to use. I have never used a mocking framework before. We have already chosen Google Test, so using Google Mock would be nice. However, my initial impressions after looking at Google Mock's tutorial are: The need for re-declaring each method in the mocking class with a MOCK_METHODn macro seems unnecessary and seems to go against the DRY principle. Their matchers (eg, the '_' in EXPECT_CALL(turtle, Forward(_));) and the order of matching seem almost too powerful. Like, it would be easy to say something you don't mean, and miss bugs that way. I have high confidence in google's developers, and low confidence in my own ability to judge mocking frameworks, never having used them before. So my question is: Are these valid concerns? Or is there no better way to define a mock object, and are the matchers intuitive to use in practice? I would appreciate answers from anyone who has used Google Mock before, and comparisons to other C++ frameworks would be helpful.

  • Framework or tool for "distributed unit testing"?

    Is there any tool or framework able to make it easier to test distributed software written in Java? My system under test is a peer-to-peer software, and I'd like to perform testing using something like PNUnit, but with Java instead of .Net. The system under test is a framework I'm developing to build P2P applications. It uses JXTA as a lower subsystem, trying to hide some complexities of it. It's currently an academic project, so I'm pursuing simplicity at this moment. In my test, I want to demonstrate that a peer (running in its own process, possibly with multiple threads) can discover another one (running in another process or even another machine) and that they can exchange a few messages. I'm not using mocks nor stubs because I need to see both sides working simultaneously. I realize that some kind of coordination mechanism is needed, and PNUnit seems to be able to do that. I've bumped into some initiatives like Pisces, which "aims to provide a distributed testing environment that extends JUnit, giving the developer/tester an ability to run remote JUnits and create complex test suites that are composed of several remote JUnit tests running in parallel or serially", but this project and a few others I have found seem to be long dead.

  • Simple problem with mod_rewrite in the Fat Free Framework

    I am trying to setup and learn the Fat Free Framework for PHP. http://fatfree.sourceforge.net/ It's is fairly simple to setup and I am running it on my machine using MAMP. I was able to get the 'hello world' example running just fin: require_once 'path/to/F3.php'; F3::route('GET /','home'); function home() { echo 'Hello, world!'; } F3::run(); But when I try to add in the second part, which has two routes: require_once 'F3/F3.php'; F3::route('GET /','home'); function home() { echo 'Hello, world!'; } F3::route('GET /about','about'); function about() { echo 'About Us.'; } F3::run(); I get a 404 error if I try the second URL: /about Not sure why one of the mod_rewrite commands would be working and not the other.   • Mark Messages As Read in the Outlook 2010 Reading Pane

    Do you ever feel annoyed that Outlook 2010 doesn’t mark messages as Read as soon as you click and view them in the Reading Pane?  Here we show you how to make Outlook mark them as read as soon as they’re opened. Mark as Read By default, Outlook will not mark a message as read until you select another message.  This can be annoying, because if you read a message and immediately click Delete, it will show up as an unread message in our Deleted Items folder. Let’s change this to make Outlook mark messages as read as soon as we view them in the Reading Pane.  Open Outlook and click File to open Backstage View, and select Options. In Options select Mail on the left menu, and under Outlook panes click on the Reading Pane button. Check the box Mark items as read when viewed in the Reading Pane to make Outlook mark your messages as read when you view them in the Reading Pane.  By default, Outlook will only mark a message read after you’ve been reading it for 5 seconds, though you can change this.  We set it to 0 seconds so our messages would be marked as read as soon as we select them. Click OK in both dialogs, and now your messages will be marked as read as soon as you select them in the reading pane, or soon after, depending on your settings. Conclusion Outlook 2010 is a great email client, but like most programs it has its quirks.  This quick tip can help you get rid of one of Outlook’s annoying features, and make it work like you want it to.   • The Evolution Of C#

    The first release of C# (C# 1.0) was all about building a new language for managed code that appealed, mostly, to C++ and Java programmers. The second release (C# 2.0) was mostly about adding what wasn’t time to built into the 1.0 release. The main feature for this release was Generics. The third release (C# 3.0) was all about reducing the impedance mismatch between general purpose programming languages and databases. To achieve this goal, several functional programming features were added to the language and LINQ was born. Going forward, new trends are showing up in the industry and modern programming languages need to be more: Declarative With imperative languages, although having the eye on the what, programs need to focus on the how. This leads to over specification of the solution to the problem in hand, making next to impossible to the execution engine to be smart about the execution of the program and optimize it to run it more efficiently (given the hardware available, for example). Declarative languages, on the other hand, focus only on the what and leave the how to the execution engine. LINQ made C# more declarative by using higher level constructs like orderby and group by that give the execution engine a much better chance of optimizing the execution (by parallelizing it, for example). Concurrent Concurrency is hard and needs to be thought about and it’s very hard to shoehorn it into a programming language. Parallel.For (from the parallel extensions) looks like a parallel for because enough expressiveness has been built into C# 3.0 to allow this without having to commit to specific language syntax. Dynamic There was been lots of debate on which ones are the better programming languages: static or dynamic. The fact is that both have good qualities and users of both types of languages want to have it all. All these trends require a paradigm switch. C# is, in many ways, already a multi-paradigm language. It’s still very object oriented (class oriented as some might say) but it can be argued that C# 3.0 has become a functional programming language because it has all the cornerstones of what a functional programming language needs. Moving forward, will have even more. Besides the influence of these trends, there was a decision of co-evolution of the C# and Visual Basic programming languages. Since its inception, there was been some effort to position C# and Visual Basic against each other and to try to explain what should be done with each language or what kind of programmers use one or the other. Each language should be chosen based on the past experience and familiarity of the developer/team/project/company and not by particular features. In the past, every time a feature was added to one language, the users of the other wanted that feature too. Going forward, when a feature is added to one language, the other will work hard to add the same feature. This doesn’t mean that XML literals will be added to C# (because almost the same can be achieved with LINQ To XML), but Visual Basic will have auto-implemented properties. Most of these features require or are built on top of features of the .NET Framework and, the focus for C# 4.0 was on dynamic programming. Not just dynamic types but being able to talk with anything that isn’t a .NET class. Also introduced in C# 4.0 is co-variance and contra-variance for generic interfaces and delegates.     I recently got a question on one of my client template posts asking me how to bind a select tag’s value to data in client templates. I was surprised not to find anything on the web addressing the problem, so I thought I’d write a short post about it. It really is very simple once you know where to look. You just need to bind the value property of the select tag, like this: <select sys:value="{binding color}"> If you do it from markup like here, you just need to use the sys: prefix. It just works.   • How to Create a Task From an Email Message in Outlook 2013

    If you need to do something related to an email message you received, you can easily create a task from the message in Outlook. A task can be created that contains all the content of the message without requiring you to re-enter the information. Creating a task in Outlook from an email message is different from flagging the message. As it says on Microsoft’s site: “When you flag an email message, the message appears in the To-Do List in Tasks and on the Tasks peek. However, if you delete the message, it also disappears from the To-Do List in Tasks and on the Tasks peek. Flagging a message doesn’t create a separate task.” Using the method described below to create a task from an email message, the task is separate from the message. The original message can be deleted or changed and the related task will not be affected. In Outlook, make sure the Mail section is active. If not, click Mail on the Navigation Bar at the bottom of the Outlook window. Then, click on the message you want to add to a task and drag it to Tasks on the Navigation Bar. A new Task window displays containing the email message and allowing you to enter the subject of the task, the Start and Due dates, Status, Priority, among other settings. When you have specified the settings for the task, click Save & Close in the Actions section of the Task tab. When the Task window closes, the Mail section is still active. If you move your mouse over Tasks on the Navigation Bar, a snippet from the new task displays in a popup window (the Task peek). Click Tasks to go to the Tasks section of Outlook. The To-Do List displays with your newly-added task listed in the middle pane. The right pane displays the details of the task and the contents of the message included in the task (as pictured at the beginning of this article). Click on Tasks to see a complete listing of all your tasks, including the one you just added from your email message. Note that attachments in an email message added to a new task are not copied to the task. You can also create new tasks by dragging contacts, calendar items, and notes to Tasks on the Navigation Bar.

  • How to Modify a Signature for Use in Plain Text Emails in Outlook 2013

    If you’ve created a signature with an image, links, text formatting, or special characters, the signature will not look the same in plain text formatted emails as it does in HTML format. As the name suggests, Plain Text does not support any type of formatting. For example, if you include an image in your signature, as shown below, the plain text version will be blank. Active links in HTML signatures will be converted to just the text of the link in plain text emails. The How-To Geek link in the image below will become simply How-To Geek and will look like the rest of the text in the signature. The same thing is true in the following example. The active links are stripped from the text. The picture of the envelope that was inserted using the Wingdings font will only display as the plain text character associated with it. There are times you may need to send email in Plain Text format, but still include your signature. You can edit the plain text version of your signature to make it look good in plain text emails by manually editing the text file. To do this, click the File tab. Click Options in the menu list on the left side of the Account Information screen. On the Outlook Options dialog box, click Mail in the list of options on the left side of the dialog box. In the Compose messages section, press and hold the Ctrl key and click the Signatures button. This opens the Signatures folder containing the files used to insert signatures into emails. The .txt file version of each signature is used when inserting a signature into a plain text email. Double-click on a .txt file for the signature you want to edit to open it in Notepad, or your default text editor. Notice that the links on “How-To Geek” and “Email me” are gone and the envelope typed using the Wingdings font was converted to an “H.” Edit the text file to remove extra characters, replace images, and provide full web and email links. Save the text file. Create a new mail message and select the edited signature, if it’s not the default signature for the current email account. To convert the email to plain text, click the Format Text tab and click Plain Text in the Format section. The Microsoft Outlook Compatibility Checker displays telling you that Formatted text will become plain text. Click Continue. The HTML version of your signature is converted to the plain text version. NOTE: You should make a backup of the .txt signature file you edited, as this file will change again when you change your signature in the Signature Editor.

  • TypeScript first impressions

    Anders published a video of his new project today, which aims at creating a superset of JavaScript, that compiles down to regular current JavaScript. Anders is a tremendously clever guy, and it always shows in his work. There is much to like in the enterprise (good code completion, refactoring and adoption of the module pattern instead of namespaces to name three), but a few things made me rise an eyebrow. First, there is no mention of CoffeeScript or Dart, but he does talk briefly about Script# and GWT. This is probably because the target audience seems to be the same as the audience for the latter two, i.e. developers who are more comfortable with statically-typed languages such as C# and Java than dynamic languages such as JavaScript. I don’t think he’s aiming at JavaScript developers. Classes and interfaces, although well executed, are not especially appealing. Second, as any code generation tool (and this is true of CoffeeScript as well), you’d better like the generated code. I didn’t, unfortunately. The code that I saw is not the code I would have written. What’s more, I didn’t always find the TypeScript code especially more expressive than what it gets compiled to. I also have a few questions. Is it possible to duck-type interfaces? For example, if I have an IPoint2D interface with x and y coordinates, can I pass any object that has x and y into a function that expects IPoint2D or do I need to necessarily create a class that implements that interface, and new up an instance that explicitly declares its contract? The appeal of dynamic languages is the ability to make objects as you go. This needs to be kept intact. More technical: why are generated variables and functions prefixed with _ rather than the $ that the EcmaScript spec recommends for machine-generated variables? In conclusion, while this is a good contribution to the set of ideas around JavaScript evolution, I don’t expect a lot of adoption outside of the devoted Microsoft developers, but maybe some influence on the language itself. But I’m often wrong. I would certainly not use it because I disagree with the central motivation for doing this: Anders explicitly says he built this because “writing application-scale JavaScript is hard”. I would restate that “writing application-scale JavaScript is hard for people who are used to statically-typed languages”. The community has built a set of good practices over the last few years that do scale quite well, and many people are successfully developing and maintaining impressive applications directly in JavaScript.   • Microsoft Management Console stops working when I add snap-in to it

I'm opening mmc.exe as administrator and trying add Certificates or any other snap-in, then while loading that snap-in MMC breaks and displays following message and after that it closes automatically once I click on close button on that message. What could be the problem?   • WebDAV through Apache2 permissions/missing files

    I have a WebDAV setup on Apache2 on a server running Debian 5.0 (Lenny), which I am accessing through a mapped network drive under Windows 7. The setup appears to run fine, I receive no permission errors when copying a file to the share the first time, but the file never shows up in the directory (it's invisible, doing a ls -lha on the directory as root on the server also shows no files. When attempting to copy the file once more I am informed that the file already exists though, and I am asked if I wish to overwrite the file, when selecting "Yes" to this, I receive a permission error saying I'm not able to write to the folder. My logs aren't reporting any access violations of any kind, what could be the problem?   • Adobe Reader Wants Sensitive Email Details

    When I run Adobe Reader, it tells me: Either there is no default mail client or the current mail client cannot fulfill the messaging request. Please run Microsoft Outlook and set it as the default mail client. I have a couple of issues with this: 1) It presupposes everyone has Microsoft Office installed. Not all home users have the budget or inclination for this. 2) It presupposes everyone wants Microsoft Outlook to be their default mail client. 3) I have Microsoft Office (incl. Outlook) installed and set as my default mail client. Even if I make it the default mail client from within the Adobe Reader Preferences, that doesn't stop the dialog appearing. 4) I thought I'd give Adobe Reader a new email address in the preferences, just to get it to stop bugging me. I notice, though, that it want's the SMTP and POP addresses and the account password? They have got to be kidding? I just want to view PDF files. How do I get the message to go away without telling Adobe my life story, giving them my mother's maiden name, my favourite movie, my place of birth, the name of my first goldfish and emptying the contents of my wallet for them?

    Hello everyone, Lately I had to reinstall my development site on my ubuntu machine since my system crashed after an os update. 4 days later my site is still not running as it should.     I have a user, who despite my best efforts, is having constant Office 2007 crashes. I've tried deleting their profile and setting it up again, repairing office, uninstalling completely and then reinstalling, and swapping out memory sticks. Any ideas? This is driving me nuts.

  • Exchange 2010 DAG + VMWare HA = no support?

    We currently have an Exchange 2003 clustered environment (two machine cluster) that we're looking to upgrade to 2010. We recently purchased a VMWare virtualization environment (three Dell R710's with an EMC NS-120 serving up NFS datastores - iSCSI is available) that we wish to use for this new environment. I'm seeing that Microsoft does not support Exchange 2010 DAGs with a virtualization high availability solution (see links below). I would like to utilize the DAG to ensure the data stays available if one host goes down, and HA to ensure that if the physical host goes down, the VM will come back up on the other available host. Does anybody know why MS does not support this? VMWare HA will only restart the VM if it is hung/down - I don't see any difference between this and restarting the physical box if someone pulled the power... Will we only run into issues with support if it has something to do with HA/DAG failover or will they see we have HA and tell us to put it on a physical box even if it has nothing to do with HA? If we disable HA for these VM's will that satisfy them on a support case? Has anybody set up an Exchange 2010 DAG on VMware with HA enabled? Will they have any issues with using an NFS datastore? We have much greater flexibility on the EMC with NFS vs iSCSI, so I would prefer to continue utilizing that.
