• Using gnome-do as a dock

  Hello, I've recently removed the bottom toolbar, in Ubuntu, and replaced it with gnome-do, using the "Docky" theme. Things looks nice, but I have a couple of questions : The dock doesn't differentiate between a shortcut and the application itself when launched. What if I want to launch more than one time that app ? (ie. the console). The dock shows all apps launched, not just the apps launched on that particular desktop. Can I change this behavior ? • Making fdisk see software RAID 0

  I am following http://grub.enbug.org/Grub2LiveCdInstallGuide and I am using software RAID 0. I am using Ubuntu 10.10 LiveCD and is trying to restore grub2 after installing Windows 7 in another partition. • Why do I have no TTY on a basic Ubuntu 9.10 server install?

  I have reinstalled Ubuntu 9.10 Server several times on a bog standard 1RU server and each time I finish the install and reboot I see GRUB run and am then presented with a black screen. The machine is running just fine, as I am able to SSH in, but I can't see anything on the attached monitor. I have a simple LCD screen connected via VGA and a signal is apparently being output to it, as it doesn't go asleep. Looking at /var/log/syslog I see: Mar 24 14:57:44 bridge5 rsyslogd-2039: Could no open output file '/dev/xconsole' [try http://www.rsyslog.com/e/2039 ] However, I later see: Mar 24 14:57:44 bridge5 kernel: [ 0.001368] console [tty0] enabled Any thoughts? • 100% CPU Runaway Processes (NCurses?)

  This is a problem I've had for years, but just haven't posted anywhere about it until now. I'm running GRML, a Debian squeeze based Linux distro, and occasionally certain processes will runaway and cause 100% CPU usage. The only way I can usually know is when my thermal meter on my statusbar will turn yellow. Sometimes I run fullscreen applications when it happens, though, so I sometimes don't catch it, leaving my computer wasting away at my CPU. The processes that I can think of off the top of my head are these: abook, aumix, hnb, wyrd. They are all NCurses based console applications, and there are others that are also NCurses based. Is there a bug in NCurses somewhere that I need patched or something? This also happened on the same distro with the same applications on a different laptop with the same configurations. Any ideas? • IE Sessions in Terminal Server

  Currently we are using WADE middleware for our order processing operation. We have about 40 operators that use 1 terminal server to open IE 8 to access the WADE middleware. To me, it's random, but every now and then someone will come to me and tell me that IE has a "Page cannot be displayed" or "HTTP Error 500" error. I did a bit of testing on my local machine and I never get this error while doing normal operations. Although, when I open one session with username "test" and then login to the wade admin console as admin, I run into problems. I do not run into problems until I logout of the wade admin. Once I logout of the Wade admin, my "test" session says "page cannot be displayed". This makes me think the IE user sessions on the terminal service are cross talking. Does anyone have any possible settings I can change in IE or do you think this is an issue with the middleware? The Terminal Server is Windows 2003, btw.

• Google reader Keyboard shortcuts not working in Firefox 3.6

  I just upgraded to Ubuntu 10.04 which comes with Firefox 3.6.3. Now Google reader some keyboard shortcuts stopped working, The j/k keys are ok, but 'v', 'Shift+x' and others don't work and start the Search As You type functionality I've always used. The Javascript console only shows this warning: Warning: The 'charCode' property of a keyup event should not be used. The value is meaningless. • Location Services are always disabled in Mac OS X Lion

  A simple location services program was working fine on my machine and suddenly stopped working. Upon further exploring the problem, I realized that some process has disabled location services in System Preferences » Security & Privacy » Privacy. I checked Enable Location Services, but again it got disabled automatically. After some research I found that it's not just my program, even built-in system functions are also failing because of this problem for example System Preferences » Date & Time » Time Zone failed to get the current location. • Exchange ActiveSync does not work for one user

  One particular user in our system is unable to connect to Exchange ActiveSync via her iPhone. When I try to connect using my own credentials on her iPhone it works (everything begins syncing), but when I input her credentials, the Settings app verifies the credentials are correct but nothing syncs. For example, if I open Mail, no items are shown. When I attempt to force a sync, it says "Cannot connect to server." In Exchange 2010 Management Console the user is no different than the others. Exchange ActiveSync is set as "Enable" in Mailbox Features. EDIT: Alternatively, if there is some easy way to create a new useraccount/mailbox and copy all of the contents of the old one over, I bet it would work, and that would be fine as well. She is a Mac user so we do not have to worry about her Active Directory account.

  Hi, I have VMware installed on Fedora 13 (host OS) /amd 64bit. When I log to it from console VMware works good. I wanted to start remotely from OS X 10.6.3, so I installed NX client. Everything is fine with the keyboard layout if I do not use VMware. When I try to run the guest OS on VMware my keyboard is cut off completely. The host and the guest OSes are setup for "us" layout and for "generic 105 keys" keyboard.

• In ADUC MMC, Advanced View, how to get Attribute Editor tab on the result of a Find?

  In Win2008 MS added a new Tab on objects in ADUC. Called Attribute Editor it is like Novell Console One's Other tab, or an arbitrary LDAP editor view, or an ADSI Edit style view. Basically it shows all allowed attributes for the object class, and allows you to edit according to your permissions. You need to enable Advanced Options in the View menu before it shows up. This is great, however it only shows up when you browse the directory tree and select an object. If you use the Find tool and open an object Attribute Editor is not shown. How annoying! Especially if your domain has more than 2000 users in a single container, then you almost must use Find to get to an object. Is there any way to make the Attribute Editor tab show up after using Find to open an object?

• Are there significant performance difference between chipsets?

  I wanted to build a single PC to fit all my needs, but since hardware virtualization support (Vt-d specifically) is a huge problem, I decided to build multiple single-use oriented computers. In this scenario I want these computers to be as minimal as possible. So the core of my question is: "Are there significant performance difference between chipsets?" I'm considering Sandy-Bridge i7 or i5 for my "game console" computer. And since I will use only one graphic card, one or two HDD, 4-8GB RAM and nothing else, I would be fine with a micro-ATX board with a Q67 (or some other low-end chipset).

• Problem with bios update on Intel S3420GP

  I am using the Intel Develepment Assistant CD, but after choosing the newest update I can see a red text but just for a second. Afterwards it tells me to reboot, but it is still the same bios version as before. I can't find access the error message. The whole software seams to be a linux. Maybe I can access a console and look into the log files?? Or are there other solutions to update the bios? EDIT: I tried to download the bios/firmware update packages (using it via network share, because the usb stick wouldn't work), but the software wont use it.

• KDE doesn't start up anything else

  I just installed KDE under Arch Linux. Problem is, nothing is starting up right with it - no window manager, no panels, nothing. All I get is a small terminal window in the bottom right corner of the screen, which I'm assuming is konsole. From that single window I can do things like start kwin or launch programs whose names I happen to know (like chromium or firefox), but I don't have a panel for starting programs or switching between programs. It doesn't matter whether I start kdm through inittab or manually by typing # /etc/rc.d/kdm start. KDM looks great, but once I log in as my normal user I just get a console window with no decoration. Is there a startup script for KDE somewhere that needs to run, and usually has a bunch of programs by default - like a window manager, panels, widgets, and all the normal background programs that run in an ordinary GUI? If so, how can I "restore" the default behavior?

• Debian Linux server hangs after a week or so

  I have 2 Debian Linux 6.0.4 servers that have a strange behaviour: after 5-7-10 days they hang. By this I mean the servers need to be restarted and before that ping won't answer. I've been struggling with this problem for a couple of months now and here's some thoughts/what I tried without being able to solve the problem. I changed the RAM on a server. Being 2 different servers I doubt that it could be something related to hardware as a 3rd identical server won't have this problem. I logged the server load and when it crashes the load is fine (quite low) I cannot find anything in the server logs, logs are fine till the server freezes. I don't have access to console unfortunately. While I have years of admin experience I have never encountered such an issue and right now I have no idea where else to investigate. If you have an idea of what I could try in order to fix the problem please share it with me:-)

In the kernel I have agpgart, drm (using i830 module) and vga text console compiled in. What am I not doing right ?

• Why do I have to manually 'Restart Management Network' on vSphere 5 host after reboot to get networking available?

  I've got a couple of vSphere 5.0 hosts in a small lab environment here and I've noticed a strange behaviour. When on of the hosts gets rebooted, it is unresponsive to the network until I log into the ESX console, Press F2 to customize and select Restart management network. Once this is done, the networking works perfectly as expected. Each host has two NICs which are trunked together using Etherchannel to a Cisco 3750. The link is also a .1q VLAN trunk and the management network is configured on VLAN121 with the VM traffic configured on VLAN118. Why would the host be completely dead to the world until I physically kick it?   Hello Everyone I am running Linux and I have some basic console knowledge but my current problem is quite difficult and I dont know how to achieve this. I want/need to rename everything within a folder that matches a given string. By everything I mean folders/files content within a file content in hidden files Basically I want to refactor a Java-project. Sure, I could use Eclipse to handle the replacing, but this leaves out the folders or resources outside of my workspace. I was thinking of a script that could do the job for me but this seems rather tricky. For instance when it comes to folder-/file-rename I want to replace only the part of the name that matches my string, the rest should remain untouched. Maybe someone already has something like this in his/her script-collection :-) Thanks in advance Marc

• Cisco 877 as PPPoA/PPPoE bridge (no routing) - how to make it listen to IP for management?

  I have a Cisco 877 configured to bridge ADSL with PPPoA to PPPoE on Vlan1. This works fine, but in this mode the only way I can configure the Cisco is via the serial console. I'd like to have the Cisco also listen on an IP address so I can telnet/ssh into it. I think the right way to go about this would be via bridge irb, but I'm not sure exactly how (or if that's even the right direction). IOS is 12.4T and my current config (cut down to essentials) is: no ip routing no ip cef ! ! interface ATM0 no ip address no ip route-cache no atm ilmi-keepalive pvc 0/38 encapsulation aal5snap ! dsl operating-mode auto bridge-group 1 ! ! interface Vlan1 no ip address no ip route-cache bridge-group 1 Just setting an IP address on Vlan1 didn't have the desired effect, but surely this must be possible somehow (the Draytek Vigor 120 even does it by default).

• Upgrading Fedora 16 to 17 with crypted LVM

  As the title suggests, I want to upgrade Fedora 16 to the Fedora 17 Alpha build, but I am struggling to do so because of my crypted HDD. To avoid the hustle of CD-ROM or USB install, I thought the preupgrade would be a good idea. It downloads the stuff, stores an image somewhere and creates an entry in my boot manager. When I choose to upgrade from the boot manager it crashes halfway through because it can not access any of the prepared files (because it's crypted) and hands me a debug console. Unfortunately, this case apparently is not covered by the Fedora troubleshooting advice, at least I was not able to find anything there. I would guess I have to mount my HDD manually, but 1) how? and 2) how do I resume the upgrade afterwards? I would really appreciate a push in the right direction.

• How can I figure out exactly which process is keeping my Mac from going to sleep and waking it up?

  I have read this knowledgebase article, but would like to know if there's a way to tell exactly which process is causing my Mac not to follow the sleep schedule I have set in System Preferences Energy Saver. I have narrowed it down to a being a process and will explain why I think so (see below). I am running OS X (10.6.5) on the new iMac 27" and I am certain it's not the following: The "Wake for Network Access" checkbox in Energy Saver settings (has never been a previous issue) Peripherals (has never been a previous issue) Any active GUI application (all are closed) Additional USB/FireWire drives (none are connected) Bluetooth (it's off) Sharing services (has never been a previous issue) The symptoms are as follows: The computer doesn't go to sleep at the predetermined time. It will wake up some number of hours after being put manually to sleep (but not within the first few seconds/minutes.) Is there a specific string I should be looking for in Console? I have tried searching for "wake" and "sleep" but can't make total sense of the results.

• Routing and Remote Access Port Mapping not applied to localhost

  Hi, I've set up Routing and Remote Access (Windows Server 2003) to forward publicip:80 to a server on the private internal network, and that's working great. Incoming requests from the internet to port 80 are correctly forwarded to our internal web server and everything is fine. However, requests on the server itself are not being forwarded. That is, if I open a console window and type "telnet publicip 80" from the server on publicip, the request is not forwarded to the private server. I understand that in RRAS I've mapped port 80 on the public interface to the private server and that's why it's not working; but I don't know how to configure it so that requests from the local PC are also forwarded to the private server. I'd appreciate any help or feedback on the matter. Thanks!

• Ubuntu 12.04 VPS doesn't boot with mysql in nsswitch.conf

  1and1 VPS ("dynamic cloud server") does not boot any more as soon as mysql lookup is enabled in nsswitch.conf - any suggestions appreciated. Minimal setup to reproduce the problem: install Ubuntu 12.04 / LTS minimal server image install mysql-server, libnss-mysql-bg, nscd configure /etc/libnss-mysql.cfg and /etc/libnss-mysql-root.cfg set up appropriate database tables configure nss lookups through mysql in nsswitch.conf passwd: compat mysql group: compat mysql shadow: compat mysql Now, when I try to reboot the server it just hangs. No logs (maybe due to /var not yet being mounted), and I can't see console output (since this is a VPS). Booting into recovery image and removing "mysql" from /etc/nsswitch.conf makes the system bootable again, so this is definitely related to nsswitch/libnss-mysql-bg. There's a thread on gentoo-users which seems to describe a similar problem, unfortunately there's no real solution described, also the thread is rather old (from 2006) so I'm not sure whether this applies to me at all.

• Using Internet Explorer 8 and 9 beta under internet options -advanced java does not show to check the box

  I am using internet 8 and under internet options advanced there is not box to check to enable java. I was told to reset which did nto work. I have tried to uninstall java 6-21 32 bit but I get windows installer error 1723. I brought up the java console and made sure it was pointing to the right target. But I guess the main thing is I have no enable java under internet options, advanced. It was under security to enable java scripting. Any answers?
