• SQL Server CLR Integration to acheive Encryption/Decryption

  I have a requirement to store the data in encrypted form in database tables. I want to do it at database level but the problems I am facing: ( a) Data Type of the field should be Varbinary. ( b) Encryption is not supported by Workgroup edition ( c) Is it possible to encrypt Numeric Fields? I want to access the encrypted data in tables to fetch in views and stored procedure for some processing but due to above problems I am not able to. Here is my Environment: Development Platform - ASP.Net,.Net Framework 3.5,Visual studio 2008 Server Operating System - Windows Server 2008 Database - SQL Server 2008 Work group edition I was also thinking to adopt a different approach to resolve this issue (yet to test it's feasibility). I was just wondering if I could create a CLR function (which could take parameters to encrypt and decrypt data using Cryptography types provided in .Net framework) and use the CLR integration feature of SQL Server and call that function from stored procedure and views. I am not sure if I am thinking in right direction? Any advice on this as well please.

• Guessing the time zone from an arbitrary "location" string?

  I'm trying to run some statistics over the Stack Overflow data dump, and for that I would like to know the time zone for each user. However, all I have to go on is the completely free-form "location" string. I'll stress that I'm only looking for an approximation of the time zone; of course, in general this is an unsolvable problem. However, many people fill out their country, state and/or city, which should give a pretty good indication. It's okay if it fails for other cases. It doesn't have to be reliable, it doesn't have to be accurate, it doesn't have to cover all bases. I don't want to waste too much time on this, so I'm wondering if there is some code out there that can make a reasonable guess. Any language, platform, API or library goes. Any ideas?

• Xcode custom project template creates only references to files

  Hi, I tried to create a custom project template for setting up unit testing. The problem is that when i create a new project based on this template it creates references to the template files : When i edit a file, it changes my template files instead of my actual project files ! When i delete my template, files from my actual project becomes red ! The project template is in : /Developer/Platforms/iPhoneOS.platform/Developer/Library/Xcode/Project Templates/Application/Test-based Application Reading some question on stack overflow i tried to install my template project in /Library/Application Support/Developer/Shared/Xcode/Project Templates But i cannot see my template when i create a new project. • Tool to Create Annotated Directory Structure Documentation

  I've got a moderately complicated application that has been developed primarily by me, and I'm getting ready to bring a few more developers in, and I'm thinking of various forms of documentation that might be helpful. I want to communicate information about the directory structure/layout of the project so the new guys will know where to look for things when they are getting started and as they add features, know where to put new files etc., so we can keep things organized and consistent. Is there any tool out there can create something a little more sophisticated than just a plain text document? I'm thinking of something that looks similar to Windows Explorer with a directory structure on the left in a panel and then when you click on a particular folder, you would be able to view some text or HTML that describes the folder in the right hand panel. Oh, and development will be done on Windows, but cross platform would be nice.

  Hi, I understand that this question could be answered with a simple sentence and that it may be viewed as subjective, however, I am a young student who is interested in pursuing a career in programming and wondered how long it took some of you to get to the level of experience you are now?. I ask this because I am currently working on building an application in Java on the Android platform and it bothers me that I am constantly having to look up how to write a certain section of code in my application such as writing to a database, or how the if loop should be structured. My question really is, how long did it take for you to become experienced enough to actually know exactly how your next line of code was going to look, before you even wrote it?

• Video packet capture over multiple IP cameras

  Hello We are working on a C language application which is simple RTSP/RTP client to record video from Axis a number of Cameras . We launch a pthread for each of the camera which establishes the RTP session and begins to record the packets captured suing the recvfrom() call... A single camera single pthread records fine for well over a day without issues.. but testing with more cameras available,about 25(so 25 pthreads), the recording to file goes fine for like 15 to 20 mins and then the recording just stops ..the application still keeps running .. Its been over a month and a half we have been trying with varied implementations but nothing seems to help .. Please provide suggestions.. We are using CentOS 5 platform

• Hashes vs Numeric id's

  When creating a web application that some how displays the display of a unique identifier for a recurring entity (videos on YouTube, or book section on a site like mine), would it be better to use a uniform length identifier like a hash or the unique key of the item in the database (1, 2, 3, etc). Besides revealing a little, what I think is immaterial, information about the internals of your app, why would using a hash be better than just using the unique id? In short: Which is better to use as a publicly displayed unique identifier - a hash value, or a unique key from the database? Edit: I'm opening up this question again because Dmitriy brought up the good point of not tying down the naming to db specific property. Will this sort of tie down prevent me from optimizing/normalizing the database in the future? The platform uses php/python with ISAM /w MySQL.

• Detecting your application's install path in Java?

  Hi, I have made a small application in Java and I would like to make a windows installer for it using the Nullsoft Scriptable Install System (http://nsis.sourceforge.net/Main_Page). The application I made needs to save user preferences somewhere and it currently saves it in the user's home directory (e.g. c:\Users\danny or /home/users/danny). However if the windows installer installs the application to e.g. c:\Program Files\whatever\ I should probably save the preferences file there too, right? How would I detect that directory path in Java? What would be a good cross-platform approach to this without losing the benefits of a windows uninstaller for windows users e.g. start menu icons, installer option, etc? Should I just continue saving my preferences in the user's home path and clutter it up? Thanks very much,

• Reading file resource in Unix and MacOS

  Hi, I am writing my first wxWidgets application which aims to be cross-platform. The program uses dll file for plugins and in Windows, reads dll resource part for information regarding plugin name, author name etc. I have never used Unix or MacOS (little Linux though) and am wondering whether compiling binary for these other OSes will require changes to the code written for Windows. For instance, is there a DLL equivalent in Unix and MacOS? Are there any provisions of compiling resource strings and files into a such files? Thanks, Sanjeev

  Hi, This question occured to me while programming a Android application, but it seems to be a general programming question more. The situation is, I am extending (subclass-ing) an class from a library, and overriding a method. how do I know if I should invoke the method of super-class? and when? (in the beginning of the overridden method or in the end?) For example, I am overriding the method "public boolean onCreateOptionsMenu(Menu menu)" from class "Activity" in Android platform. And I saw someone write "return super.onCreateOptionsMenu(menu)" in the end of the method, in an example. But how do I know it should be done this way? and it is correct or not? what's the difference if I begin my method with "super.onCreateOptionsMenu(menu)"? BR, Henry

• Freezing a dual-mode (GUI and console) application using cx_Freeze

  Hi, I've developed a Python application that runs both in the GUI mode and the console mode. If any arguments are specified, it runs in a console mode else it runs in the GUI mode. I've managed to freeze this using cx_Freeze. I had some problems hiding the black console window that would pop up with wxPython and so I modified my setup.py script like this: import sys from cx_Freeze import setup, Executable base = None if sys.platform == "win32": base = "Win32GUI" setup( name = "simple_PyQt4", version = "0.1", description = "Sample cx_Freeze PyQt4 script", executables = [Executable("PyQt4app.py", base = base)]) This works fine but now when I try to open up my console and run the executable from there, it doesn't output anything. I don't get any errors or messages so it seems that cx_Feeze is redirecting the stdout somewhere else. Is is possible to get it to work with both mode?   i have tried to generate Class Diagrams in NetBeans 6.7 and 6.8 but all i get is: i figured out installing UML for 6.8 here: NetBeans 6.8 UML i have followed the instructions here: UML Class diagrams i so far i failed to generate anything meaningful. i have followed the tips: Open your project, then create a new UML project (choose "Reverse Engineered Java-Platform model"). After that all your classes will be available in the UML project under "Model". You can now create a new class diagram and drag your classes from "Model" onto the diagram. but nothing meaningful happens when i drag my classes to the Class Diagrams. it always represents the classes as "datatype" on the diagram and class info is not displayed. any helpful tips regarding how can i fix this? or another way of generating Java class diagrams? thank you for your time.

• In TFS, is there a maximum amount of workspaces which can be used for a user?

  I'm currently in the process of creating a bunch of new build scripts for our platform. Things went okay until I encountered the following error: D:\TFS\WorkingDir\BuildType\TFSBuild.proj(173,5): error MSB4018: Microsoft.TeamFoundation.VersionControl.Client.WorkspaceNotFoundException: TF14061: The workspace BUILDMACHINENAME_9;BUILDMACHINENAME\TFSService does not exist. When I take a look at the list of workspaces (with Team Foundation Sidekicks) I see there are a bunch of BUILDMACHINENAME_xxx workspaces, where xxx is a number ranging from 1 to 8. What I'm thinking is that TFS reaches some kind of limit (10 probably) of the amount of workspaces it can create for a certain owner, and thus fails to create a workspace for the build automatically. Can this be the case? Anyone else encountered this?

• Eclipse -vm option trouble

  I'm having trouble setting up a new eclipse installation with the -vm option. I'm using the eclipse.ini file below (which has worked in the past). I need this for the m2eclipse plugin. Currently, if I include the -vm option eclipse fails to start. • Taking learning into account in a development process

  How to deal with the fact that you don't know the language/framework in a development process? For instance, suppose a group of Java developers are about to start a .NET project, they don't know the platform well and might end up finding solutions that the framework already solves or solves better. The sort of questions I have are: which are the best practices in this case? Is RTFM before going on a good pratice? When should one stop RTFM and start asking/searching/playing? Is not RTFM and just searching/asking/playing a good practice? What about estimatives? I'd like to hear from your experience :-)

• Current URL with PHP

  I have a link shortener system (Yourls) set up so you can go to the short url with ?url=[xyz] (where [xyz] is the url you wan to shorten) added to the end will shorten the URL. I want to add a link to a separate page (on my MediaWiki wiki) that shortens the permalink of the page that it is on. I need to add the button to my template in a way that will add the URL of the current page to the link. MediaWiki is a PHP platform, so that is preferred (but JavaScript is fine too). How can I do this? (I apologize if this is confusing)

  I'm attempting to build a Tropo Ruby application and I need to retrieve the result of an HTTPS GET. The Tropo platform doesn't have the httpclient Ruby gem so I can't use that. The Ruby engine used is JRuby so a suggestion has been to make use of the Java URL class to do the request. I've played around with it a little bit and I seem to be able to create the URL object ok but am now struggling with how to get the results of executing the request. • Multilangual Unicode rendering in opengl

  Hi Folks, I have to extend an OpenGL-Rendering System to support international characters (especially Hebrew, Arabic and cyrillic). Development Platform is Windows(XP|Vista|7), Alas using Embercardero Delphi 2010. I currently use wglOutLineFont(...) to build my font's display list and glCallLists(length(m_Text), UNSIGNED_SHORT, PWchar(m_Text) ) to render my strings. While this is feasable for Latin-1 Characters, building the full unicode character set in advanced is pretty time-consuming (about 8.5 minutes on my machine), so i am looking for a more efficient solution. I thought about limiting the range from u+0020 - u+077f (latin, greek, cyrillic, arbaic and hebrew) to include just the glyphs i need, but that would just be a solution for my current needs, and will become insufficent once other encoding is needed. On the upside, i do not have to worry about left-to right or right-to left direction as our application can handle this already. I would expect this to be a well-known problem, so i would like to ask if there is any reference material on this on the web, or if you could share some insight on this?
