• Web Essentials extension now available for Visual Studio Express

One of the best extensions for front-end development and design is the Web Essentials extension by Mads Kristensen on the VS team. It was a hugely welcome surprise to find that this extension is now available, in full, for VS Express, and had been since May, darn it! It has a huge number of useful features, not least being able to minify HTML, CSS and JavaScript files, which is almost a prerequisite for responsive sites. It can also bundle them together. There are lots of other features for HTML editing; intellisense and syntax highlighting for robots.txt files; 'surround with tag', intellisense for meta tags (including iOS, Twitter and Facebook); generate vendor-specific CSS etc etc. The full details can be found at the dedicated site. http://vswebessentials.com This extension alone makes VS Express far more useful and worth having.

• Visual web page designer for Django?

  I'm just starting my Django learning so pardon me if any part of this question is off-base. I have done a lot of web searching for information on the equivalent of a visual web page designer for Django and I don't seem to be getting very far. I have experience with Delphi (Object Pascal), C, C++, Python, PHP, Java, and Javascript and have created and maintained several web sites that included MySQL database dependent content. For the longest time I've been using one of the standard WYSIWIG designers to design the actual web pages, with any needed back end programming done via Forms or AJAX calls that call server side PHP scripts. I have grown tired of the quirks, bugs, and other annoyances associated with the program. Also, I find myself hungry for the functionality and reliability a good MVC based framework would provide me so I could really express myself with custom code easily. So I am turning to Django/Python. However, I'm still a junkie for a good WYSIWIG designer for the layout of web pages. I know there are some out there that thrive on opening up a text editor, possibly with some code editor tools to assist, and pounding out pages. But I do adore a drag and drop editor for simple page layout, especially for things like embedded images, tables, buttons, etc. I found a few open source projects on GitHub but they seem to be focused on HTML web forms, not a generic web page editor. So can I get what I want here? The supreme goal would be to find not only a web page editor that creates Django compatible web pages, but if I dare say it, have a design editor that could add Python code stubs to various page elements in the style of the Delph/VCL or VB design editors. Note, I also have the Wing IDE Professional IDE, version 2.0. As a side note, if you know of any really cool, fun, or time-saving Python libraries that are designed for easy integration into Django please tell me about them. -- roschler

• Read All The Books from Skyrim on Your Ebook Reader

  If you’re a fan of the wildly popular RPG game Skyrim, you’ve undoubtedly discovered the books sprinkled throughout the Empire. This collection brings them all together for out-of-game reading. Blogger and Skyrim fan Capaneus enjoyed reading the in-game books so much (found on the shelves of homes and otherwise scattered throughout the virtual world) that he did a little digging in the game files to turn up the source of the books. It turns out he didn’t have to dig too deeply, the files are stored as text documents (and if you have a copy of the game installed right now you could easily open them up yourself). He took those text files and carefully formatted them as MOBI and EPUB files, well suited for use on an ebook reader or tablet. Hit up the link below to grab a copy for your own perusal. • What browser is sending user agent beginning mozilla/5.0+, tramslates & into &amp;

  We've got a website which has been running for a few years now. One of our customers has just started having an intermittent problem. Looking at our iis6.0 logs the service works correctly when they have a user agent beginning "mozilla/4.0+" but fails when the user agent begins "mozilla/5.0+". The particular customer only started having this problem on Wednesday. Does anyone know the browser/upgrade which changes the 4.0 to 5.0? The actual problem caused is that an "&" in a url parameter list is being encoded as "&amp;". Anyone seen anything similar? We have other users sending from browsers with the 5.0+ user agent without trouble. Sorry about the tags but don't have the rep to create new ones. • How can I uniqely record every new command I use, and possibly timestamp it?

  I've been on Linux for more than 6 months now but never went too much into the CLI (command-line interface or terminal or shell) Now as I ask questions here, get answers, or help from other sites, I learn new commands... How can I can store every new command in a text file? Only new/*unique* commands, not repetitions of the same command. Here's an example: In the terminal, I enter the commands like this- ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ *command1* ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ *command2* ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ *command3* ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ *command4* ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ *command1* Now, these commands should get saved in a text file say commandrec like this- *command1* *command2* *command3* *command4* NOTE:The last command in the terminal which was again command1 is not recorded/saved again in the text file. And the next time I open the terminal, and enter a new command command 5, it should get appended to the list in commandrec (but if the command was used earlier on some other date, it should still be ignored. For example, command 1 entered again along with command 5 on a new day/time but command1 not recorded as already used) The commandrec file looking something like this- 31/05/12 12:00:00 *command1* *command2* *command3* *command4* 01/06/12 13:00:00 *command 5* (the time and date thing would be great if possible, but okay even if that isn't there) This way, I can have a record of all commands used by me to date. • Fix Google Reader Lag by Blocking Google Plus Button

  Chrome: Many Google Reader fans have noticed, since the upgrades last month, that the service is unbearably slow. Speed things up by blocking the Google Plus button. Ever since the upgrade from the old Google Reader interface to the new integrated-with-Google-Plus interface, many Google Reader users were reporting a painfully long lag between reading entries in Reader. Previously hitting a keyboard shortcut or arrow button to move you through the new stories was instant with no noticeable lag. After the upgrade a lag of 3-5 seconds per individual story became common (we experienced this annoying lag around the How-To Geek office immediately after the upgrade). One of the theories was that the addition of the Google Plus button to every article was causing memory issues. Geeks Are Sexy tested the theory by blocking this address: plusone.google.com/u/0/_/+1/fastbutton using AdBlock. While people were reporting great success with that move (and you may find it works great too) we didn’t have any luck. What did work for us was installing Chromeblock and, while visiting reader.google.com, clicking on the ChromeBlock toolbar button and blocking Google +1. After that the 3-5 second lag vanished and browsing articles was as snappy as it had been. Hit up the link below to grab a copy of Chromeblock. • Move the Status Bar Web Address Display to the Address Bar

  Is the ability to see the addresses for weblinks the only reason that you keep the Status Bar visible? Now you can hide the Status Bar and move that address display to the Address Bar in Firefox. Before Here is the normal “Status Bar” address display for the weblink we were hovering the mouse over in our browser. That is nice but if you really prefer to keep the “Status Bar” hidden what do you do? Move that display to a better (and definitely more convenient) location. After Once you have the extension installed that is all there is to it…you are ready to go. Notice the address display in “Address Bar”. That is definitely looking nice. Just for fun we temporarily left the “Status Bar” visible as a demonstration while hovering over the link. And then with the “Status Bar” totally disabled…more screen real-estate is always a good thing. Note: The Status Address Bar extension does not show the original address behind shortened URLs. Conclusion If you are looking for an alternate way to see the address behind weblinks and acquire more screen real-estate, then the Status Bar extension will be a wonderful addition to your Firefox Browser. • What about introduction to programming with C# via LINQPad?

  From different questions/answers/articles in this and some other sites, I got the idea that the introductory language for programming should be- High level Less verbose C# is one of the heavily used high level languages being used these days. It's also multi-paradigm and descendant of C, the lingua-franca of all programming languages. So, I think it has the potential to be the introductory programming language. But I felt it's a bit verbose for the novice learners. Then LINQPad came into my mind. With LINQPad, someone can start with C# without it's verbosity. Because you can just run one statement or few statements or a standalone function with LINQPad. Again you can run a full source file also. Another thing it provide is- using SQL. So, it can be used for learning SQL too. And not to mention, it's free. So, what you guys think about the idea of introducing programming with C# via LINQPad? Any thing to watch out? Any suggestion?

• Adding a CMS to an existing Magento shop

  I am working on a project for 3 niche stores built on magento (using magento's multi-store function) that each get roughly 50k unique visitors a day. The sites don't currently have a blog or forum or any social networking aspects. Would like to add a cms to each site that can be centrally run and would like it to take over the front end content from Magento. Also would like it to maintain an online blog/publication of sorts with videos, articles, and the like with privileges to edit the content given to a dozen or so people with different privileges. Want to add a forum to each site that is fairly robust and to possibly add some social networking aspects down the road, so extandability and available plugins/mods in each cms is important. Other than shared login between the forums,blog/publication and store, would like to be able to integrate some content from the forums and blog/publication into the store as well. After researching this a bit, I am inclined towards Drupal, but I haven't found any modules to integrate it with Magento. Also, since the blog content will be done by about a dozen nontechnical people, I want something that is very easy to work with. Lastly, since the site gets a good amount of traffic, speed and security are very important. What CMS would you recommend integrating in this context? Deciding between Drupal, Wordpress and Plone. Thanks.

• SQL Azure Service Issues &ndash; 10.27.2012 (Restored Now)

  Please note that if you have a Windows Azure website, or use SQL Azure, your site may be experiencing downtime currently.  Notice I just called in regarding one of my public facing internet sites, because the site was failing to load anything but its error page, I couldn’t connect to the database to inspect application error logs, and the Windows Azure Management portal won’t load the SQL Azure extension. After speaking to the representative, he also mentioned that they were also having some problems updating the Service Dashboard which shows service up/down time, and for now, they are posting messages at http://account.windowsazure.com.  Please note that this issue may only be effecting certain regions.  Last, I may have misheard the representative, but he said that the outage was being categorized as a level 8, and if I heard correctly, I think he said that level 8 was the worst level.  I can’t say for sure on this though, because the phone connection to their support number was bad – large amounts of white noise. Good Luck! Update It appears that this outage may also be effecting the following services: SQL Database, Service Bus, Datamarket, Windows Azure Marketplace, Shared Caching, Access Control 2.0, and SQL Reporting. The note on the account page says for the South Central US region, however, I believe the representative I spoke to also mentioned North Central. As I said before though, the connection was bad. Update 2 My site regained connectivity about an hour ago, and it appears that the service dashboard is back in operation with correct status and history. It does appear that I misheard on the phone regarding multiple regions, so chances are this only effected a percentage of the platform. All in all, if this WAS their worst level of a problem, they really got it fixed and back up pretty fast. All in all, I understand that it is inherent for a complex system such as Azure to have ups and downs, but at the end of the day, I am still happy to support Azure to its fullest!

  My favorite browser: chromium is testing my patience. For some reason it sometimes uses 99,99% of I/O. (reading 2-3MB/s) Other processes (updatedb.mlocate, [kswapd0], clementine, compiz) show the same behavior. However this problem always starts and ends with chromium. To illustrate the impact on my system: when my disk starts to spin like crazy en the led burns continiously the system is so slow that it takes about two to five minuits to switch to tty6, log in and execute "killall chromiumbrowser && killall chromium" This is way faster than starting a new terminal in X, just starting a terminal seems to heavy for compiz under these circumstances. It seems that the chance to increases when more complex sites like gmail of plugins like flash are running. Opening several new tabs at omgubunt.co.uk has the best chance to replecate this isue.   I am currently a Junior PHP developer and I really LOVE it, I love internet from first time I got into it, I always loved smartly-created websites, always was wondering how it all works, always admired websites with good design and rich functionality, and finally I am creating web-sites on my own and it feels really great. My goals are to become expert web-developer (aiming for creating websites for small and medium business, not enterprise-sized systems), to have a great full-time job, to do freelance and to create my own startup in future. General question: What do I do to be an expert, professional and demanded web-programmer? More concrete questions: 1). How do I choose languages and technologies needed? I know that every web-developer must know HTML+CSS+JS+AJAX+JQuery, I am doing some design aswell cause I like it and I need it for freelance also. But what about backend languages? Currently I picked PHP cause it's most demanded in my area and most of web uses it, but what would happen in future? Say, in 3 years, I am good at PHP and PHP frameworks by than, but what if some other languages get most popular? Do I switch to them? I know that good programmer is not about languages and frameworks but about ability to learn and to aim the goals, but still I think that learning frameworks for some language can take quite some time. Am I wrong? 2). In general, what are basic guidelines to be expert web-developer? What are most important things I should focus on? Thank you!

• How do web-developers do web-design when freelancing?

  So I got my first job recently as junior web-developer. My company creates small/medium sites for wide variety of customers: autobusiness companies, weddign agencies, some sauna websites, etcetc, hope you get my point. They don't do big serious stuff like bank systems or really big systems, it's mostly small/medium-sized websites for startups/medium sized business. My main skills are PHP/MySQL, I also know HTML and a bit of CSS/JS/AJAX. I know that good web-developer must know some backend language (like PHP/Ruby/Python) AND HTML+CSS+JS+AJAX+JQuery combo. However, I was always wondering. In my company we have web-designer. In other serious organisations I often see the same stuff: web-developers who create business-logic and web-designers, who create design. As far as I know, after designers paint design of website they give it to developers either in PSD or sliced way, and developers put it together with logic, but design is NOT created by developers. Such separation seems very good for full-time job, but I am concerned with question how do freelance web-developers do websites? Do most of them just pay freelance designers to create design for them? Or do some people do both? Reason why I ask - I plan to start some freelancing in my free time after I get good at web-development. But I don't want to create websites with great business-logic but poor design. Neither I want to let someone else create a design for me. I like web-development very much and I am doing quite good, I like design aswell, even though I am a bit lost how to study it and get better at it. But I am scared that going in both directions won't let me become expert, it seems like two totally different jobs and getting really good in both seems very hard. But I really want to do both. • Managing JS and CSS for a static HTML web application

  I'm working on a smallish web application that uses a little bit of static HTML and relies on JavaScript to load the application data as JSON and dynamically create the web page elements from that. First question: Is this a fundamentally bad idea? I'm unclear on how many web sites and web applications completely dispense with server-side generation of HTML. (There are obvious disadvantages of JS-only web apps in the areas of graceful degradation / progressive enhancement and being search engine friendly, but I don't believe that these are an issue for this particular app.) Second question: What's the best way to manage the static HTML, JS, and CSS? For my "development build," I'd like non-minified third-party code, multiple JS and CSS files for easier organization, etc. For the "release build," everything should be minified, concatenated together, etc. If I was doing server-side generation of HTML, it'd be easy to have my web framework generate different development versus release HTML that includes multiple verbose versus concatenated minified code. But given that I'm only doing any static HTML, what's the best way to manage this? (I realize I could hack something together with ERB or Perl, but I'm wondering if there are any standard solutions.) In particular, since I'm not doing any server-side HTML generation, is there an easy, semi-standard way of setting up my static HTML so that it contains code like <script src="js/vendors/jquery.js"></script> <script src="js/class_a.js"></script> <script src="js/class_b.js"></script> <script src="js/main.js"></script> at development time and <script src="http://ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/jquery/1.8.2/jquery.min.js"></script> <script src="js/entire_app.min.js"></script> for release?

• Fixed JavaScript Warning - Pin to Top of Page Using CSS Position [migrated]

  I am new to this site, but it seems like the right place to ask this question. I am working on a noscript chunk of code whereby I do some stuff that includes a <p> at the top of the page that alerts the users that he/she has JavaScript disabled. The end result should look like the Stack Exchange sites when JavaScript is disabled (here is a screenshot of mine - SE looks similar except it is at the very top of the page): I have it working OK, but I would love it if the red bar stayed fixed along the top, upon scrolling. I tried using the position: fixed; method, but it ends up moving the p element and I can't get it to look exactly the same as it does without the position: fixed; modification. I tried fiddling with CSS top and left and other positioning but it doesn't ever look like I want it to.   I am having a problem similar to that asked (and solved) here: Can't enable GNOME Shell extensions. I have performed both of the "tweaks" explained in that solution (i.e., here and here); but that does not seem to help. My gnome-shell is version 3.2.1. • Clean URLs issue using .htaccess in PHP project

  I am working on a PHP laravel project. I am currently facing issues with .htaccess file. I have following .htaccess: <IfModule mod_rewrite.c> Options -MultiViews RewriteEngine On RewriteBase / RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f RewriteRule ^ index.php [L] </IfModule> When I reload my page the it gave me following error: 404 Not Found The requested URL /contacts was not found on this server. Then I opened /etc/apache2/users/username.conf file which had following line of code: <Directory "/Users/username/Sites/"> Options Indexes MultiViews AllowOverride None Order allow,deny Allow from all </Directory> In above code I changed AllowOverride None to AllowOverride All. Then I reload page and got following error: 403 Forbidden You don't have permission to access /contacts on this server. When I add FollowSymLinks to .htaccess file Options such as like this Options -MultiViews FollowSymLinks. Then sometimes I get this 500 Internal Server Error error and sometime this *Error 324 (net::ERR_EMPTY_RESPONSE): The server closed the connection without sending any data*. Each time I reload my page one of these errors with FollowSymLinks option. I also uncomment following lines in /etc/apache2/httpd.conf: LoadModule rewrite_module libexec/apache2/mod_rewrite.so LoadModule php5_module libexec/apache2/libphp5.so and still I am getting same permission denied error. Please help me I am trying to solve this problem for past 3 days but it is till unresolved.
