• MySQL Binary Storage using BLOB VS OS File System: large files, large quantities, large problems.

  Hi Guys, Versions I am running (basically latest of everything): PHP: 5.3.1 MySQL: 5.1.41 Apache: 2.2.14 OS: CentOS (latest) Here is the situation. I have thousands of very important documents, ranging from customer contracts to voice signatures (recordings of customer authorisation for contracts), with file types including, but not limited to jpg, gif, png, tiff, doc, docx, xls, wav, mp3, pdf, etc. All of these documents are currently stored on several servers including Windows 32 bit, CentOS and Mac, among others. Some files are also stored on employees desktop computers and laptops, and some are still hard copies stored in hundreds of boxes and filing cabinets. Now because customers or lawyers could demand evidence of contracts at any time, my company has to be able to search and locate the correct document(s) effectively, for this reason ALL of these files have to be digitised (if not already) and correlated into some sort of order for searching and accessing. As the programmer, I have created a full Customer Relations Management tool that the whole company uses. This includes Customer Profiles management, Order and job Tracking tools, Job/sale creation and management modules, etc, and at the moment any file that is needed at a customer profile level (drivers licence, credit authority, etc) or at a job/sale level (contracts, voice signatures, etc) can be uploaded to the server and sits in a parent/child hierarchy structure, just like Windows Explorer or any other typical file managment model. The structure appears as such: drivers_license |- DL_123.jpg voice_signatures |- VS_123.wav |- VS_4567.wav contracts So the files are uplaoded using PHP and Apache, and are stored in the file system of the OS. At the time of uploading, certain information about the file(s) is stored in a MySQL database. Some of the information stored is: TABLE: FileUploads FileID CustomerID (the customer id that the file belongs to, they all have this.) JobID/SaleID (the id of the job/sale associated, if any.) FileSize FileType UploadedDateTime UploadedBy FilePath (the directory path the file is stored in.) FileName (current file name of uploaded file, combination of CustomerID and JobID/SaleID if applicable.) FileDescription OriginalFileName (original name of the source file when uploaded, including extension.) So as you can see, the file is linked to the database by the File Name. When I want to provide a customers' files for download to a user all I have to do is "SELECT * FROM FileUploads WHERE CustomerID = 123 OR JobID = 2345;" and this will output all the file details I require, and with the FilePath and FileName I can provide the link for download. http... server / FilePath / FileName There are a number of problems with this method: Storing files in this "database unconcious" environment means data integrity is not kept. If a record is deleted, the file may not be deleted also, or vice versa. Files are strewn all over the place, different servers, computers, etc. The file name is the ONLY thing matching the binary to the database and customer profile and customer records. etc, etc. There are so many reasons, some of which are described here: http://www.dreamwerx.net/site/article01 . SO, after much research I have pretty much decided I am going to store ALL of these files in the database, as a BLOB or LONGBLOB, but there are still many considerations before I do this. I know that storing them in the database is a viable option, however there are a number of methods of storing them. I also know storing them is one thing; correlating and accessing them in a manageable way is another thing entirely. The article provided at this link: dreamwerx.net/site/article01 describes a way of splitting the uploaded binary files into 64kb chunks and storing each chunk with the FileID, and then streaming the actual binary file to the client using headers. This is a really cool idea since it alleviates preassure on the servers memory; instead of loading an entire 100mb file into the RAM and then sending it to the client, it is doing it 64kb at a time. I have tried this (and updated his scripts) and this is totally successful, in a very small frame of testing. So if you are in agreeance that this method is a viable, stable and robust long-term option to store moderately large files (1kb to couple hundred megs), and large quantities of these files, let me know what other considerations or ideas you have. Also, I am considering getting a current "File Management" PHP script that gives an interface for managing files stored in the File System and converting it to manage files stored in the database. If there is already any software out there that does this, please let me know. I guess there are many questions I could ask, and all the information is up there ^^ so please, discuss all aspects of this and we can pass ideas back and forth and teach each other. • GWT Query fails second time -only.

  HI, I have a visualization function in GWT which calls for two instances of the same panels - two queries. Now, suppose one url is A and the other url is B. Here, I am facing an issue in that if A is called first, then both A and B works. If B is called first, then only B works, A - times out. If I call both times A, only the first time A works, second time it times out. If I call B twice, it works both times without a hitch. Even though the error comes at timed out, it actually is not timing out - in FF status bar, it shows till - transferring data from A, and then it gets stuck. This doesnt even show up in the first time query. The only difference between A and B is that B returns very fast, while A returns comparitively slow. The query which works all the time (i.e. B is the example URL given in GWT visualization site: see comment [1]). • Starting to make progress Was [MediaRecorder prepare() causes segfault]

  Folks, I have a situation where my MediaRecorder instance causes a segfault. I'm working with a HTC Hero, Android 1.5+APIs. I've tried all variations, including 3gpp and H.263 and reducing the video resolution to 320x240. What am I missing? The state machine causes 4 MediaPlayer beeps and then turns on the video camera. Here's the pertinent source: UPDATE: ADDING SURFACE CREATE INFO I have rebooted the device based on previous answer to similar question. UPDATE 2: I seem to be following the MediaRecorder state machine perfectly, and if I trap out the MR code, the blank surface displays perfectly and everything else functions perfectly. I can record videos manually and play back via MediaPlayer in my code, so there should be nothing wrong with the underlying code. I've copied sample code on the surface and surfaceHolder code. I've looked at the MR instance in the Debug perspective in Eclipse and see that all (known) variables seem to be instantiated correctly. The setter calls are all now implemented in the exaxct order specced in the state diagram. UPDATE 3: I've tried all permission combinations: CAMERA + RECORD_AUDIO+RECORD_VIDEO, CAMERA only, RECORD_AUDIO+RECORD_VIDEO This is driving me bats! :))) UPDATE 4: starting to work... but with puzzling results. Based on info in bug #5050, I spaced everything out. I have now gotten the recorder to actually save a snippet of video (a whole 2160 bytes!), and I did it by spacing the view visibility, prepare() and start() w.a.a.a.a.a.y out (like several hundred milliseconds for each step). I think what happens is that either bringing the surface VISIBLE has delayed processing or else the start() steps on the prepare() operation before it is complete. What is now happening, however, is that my simple timer tickdown counter is getting clobbered. Is it now that the preview and save operations are causing my main process thread to become unavailable? I'm recording only 10fps at 176x144. Referencing the above code, I've added a timer tickdown after setPreviewDisplay(), prepare() and start(). • Spring MVC configuration problems

  i have some problems with configuring Spring MVC. I made a maven multi module project with the following modules: /api /domain /repositories /webapp I like to share the domain and the repositories between the api and the webapp (both web projects). • Problem with From field in contact form and mail() function

  I've got a contact form with 3 fields and a textarea... I use jQuery to validate it and then php to send emails. This contact form works fine but, when I receive an email, From field isn't correct. I'd like to want that From field shows text typed in the Name field of the contact form. Now I get a From field like this: <[email protected]> For example, if an user types "Matthew" in the name field, I'd like to want that this word "Matthew" appears in the From field. • Session caching problem

  I have a strange problem with php sessions. I use them for authorization on my site. I store two variables - currently logged in user's id and username in session. When I log in with one username, than log out and log in again with another username the previous user's id is returned using the session variable instead of the current user. The most strange thing is that this happens only when it comes to insert some data into database. When I directly echo this variable the correct id is displayed, but when I insert new record into database this variable sends incorrect id. • creating a Menu from SQLite values in Java

  I am trying to create a ListMenu using data from an SQLite database to define the name of each MenuItem. So in a class called menu.java I have defined the array String classes [] = {}; which should hold each menu item name. If I implement that function by Sam/Mango the program crashes, am I using it incorrectly or is the error due to the unknown size of the array? The xml files are some data received from a client, so i can't control the way they are sending it to me. L.E. Basically when i am trying to test this data in excel (for example i want to make sure that the attribute of childOfChild7 corresponds to the correct identity id) i am getting a lot of blank spaces. If i am importing in access to get only the data i want out, i have to do a thousands subqueries to get them all in a nice table. Basically i just want to see for one Object all its data (one object - One row) and then just delete/hide the columns i don't need.

  Hi! I am working with carscading dropdowns in MVC. It apears that I will not be able to easaly create dropdowns on demand, instead I will have to add the dropdowns before sending it to the client. This should be checked when doing a call to the service as well as when the page is sent to the client ("POSTBACK"). What I need is : 4 Dropdowns Only the first dropdown is visible when first entering the page. When selecting a option from dropdown1 the dropdown2 will be populated and so on If there is only 1 option then the dropdown should be hidden If all 4 dropdowns is set and the end-user change dropdown 1, then dropdown2 should be reloaded and the rest be hidden If the user have selected some of the dropdowns(say 1,2 and 3) and hit submit and the page is not accepted on the server side(not valid) the dropdowns should be set exacly as when the user cliked the submit button when the page returns to the user. Any suggestions on this?

  Hi! I'm having a weird issue that I can't track down... For context, I have resources of Users, Registries, and Giftlines. Each User has many Registries. Each Registry has many Giftlines. It's a belongs to association for them in a reverse manner. What is basically happening, is that when I am creating a giftline, the giftline itself is created properly, and linked to its associated Registry properly, but then in the process of being redirected back to the Registry show page, the session[:user_id] variable is cleared and I'm logged out. As far as I can tell, where it goes wrong is here in the registries_controller: def show @registry = Registry.find(params[:id]) @user = User.find(@registry.user_id) if (params[:user_id] && (@user.login != params[:user_id]) ) flash[:notice] = "User #{params[:user_id]} does not have such a registry." redirect_to user_registries_path(session[:user_id]) end end Now, to be clear, I can do a show of the registry normally, and nothing weird happens. It's only when I've added a giftline does the session[:user_id] variable get cleared. I used the debugger and this is what seems to be happening. • OpenSSL in C++ email client - server closes connection with TLSv1 Alert message

  My app connects to a IMAP email server. One client configured his server to reject SSLv2 certificates, and now my app fails to connect to the server. All other email clients connect to this server successfully. My app uses openssl. I debugged by creating minimal openssl client and attempt to connect to the server. Below is the code with connects to the mail server (using Windows sockets, but same problem is with unix sockets). Server sends its initial IMAP greeting message, but after client sends 1st command, server closes connection. In Wireshark, I see that after sending command to server, it returns TLSv1 error message 21 (Encrypted Alert) and connection is gone. I'm looking for proper setup of OpenSSL for this connection to succeed. • Fastest way to move records from a oracle DB into MS sql server after processing

  Hi.. Ok this is the scenario...I have a table in Oracle that acts like a queue... A VB.net program reads the queue and calls a stored proc in MS SQL Server that processes and then inserts the message into another SQL server table and then deletes the record from the oracle table. We use a datareader to read the records from Oracle and then call the stored proc for each of the records. The program seems to be a little slow. The stored procedure itself isnt slow. The SP by itself when called in a loop can process about 2000 records in 20 seconds. BUt when called from the .Net program, the execution time is about 5 records per second. I have seen that most of the time consumed is in calling the stored procedure and waiting for it to return. Is there a better way of doing this? I was able to display the first listview but when it get data for the second listview, the data for first listview is disappeared because the page is refreshed, vice versa. This should be checked when doing a call to the service as well as when the page is sent to the client ("POSTBACK"). What I need is : 4 Dropdowns Only the first dropdown is visible when first entering the page. When selecting an option from dropdown1 the dropdown2 will be populated and so on If there is only 1 option then the dropdown should be hidden If all 4 dropdowns are set and the end-user changes dropdown1, then dropdown2 should be reloaded and the rest be hidden If the user has selected some of the dropdowns (say 1, 2 and 3) and hit submit and the page is not accepted on the server side (not valid) the dropdowns should be set exactly as when the user clicked the submit button when the page returns to the user.   I'm stuck at how to save the state of my EditTexts on screen orientation. Currently if text is inputted into the EditTexts and the screen is orientated, the fields are wiped (as expected). I am already calling onSaveInstanceState and saving a String, but I have no clue on how to save the EditTexts which are created in code and then retrieve them and add them to the EditTexts when redrawing the activity. • Fastest way to move records from an Oracle database into SQL Server

  Ok this is the scenario... I have a table in Oracle that acts like a queue... A VB.net program reads the queue and calls a stored proc in SQL Server that processes and then inserts the message into another SQL Server table and then deletes the record from the oracle table. We use a DataReader to read the records from Oracle and then call the stored proc for each of the records. The program seems to be a little slow. The stored procedure itself isn't slow. The SP by itself when called in a loop can process about 2000 records in 20 seconds. But when called from the .Net program, the execution time is about 5 records per second. I have seen that most of the time consumed is in calling the stored procedure and waiting for it to return. Is there a better way of doing this?
