I have never built a server before, so I need some suggestions.
What should I consider when choosing hardware for a web server?
I have a budget of 10k.
So i am working on my member server right now and everytime I am adding accounts in security tab of a folder, I am asked for login name and password from the Domain Controller. How do select so I dont need to do this everytime? I am watching this video guide and the man there never need to fill in credentials on his member server.
I have to perform various task such as restarting process, monitor process state check disk space, log monitoring on Window server 2003 machine. For this i am using remote desktop access which is very slow. Is there any alternate (Tool or Framework) for windows server where i can execute my script on my machine and the required task will be performed on the remote machine in somewhat interactive manner (like putty in linux)
Hello,
We are doing distributed development, working at home, office and sometimes at customers.
We are using assembla for source-repository and we need a centralized-remote SQL Server 2008 database hosting for (similar to svn on assembla) our SQL development server.
Can you name / recommend any service providers?
We've developing a database driven (70%/30% read/write load) website using C#.NET, IIS and MS SQL Server 2008 to be hosted on Windows 2008. Due to contractual reasons our setup has to be hosted on our own physical/virtual servers instead of a cloud solution at this stage.
Could someone outline or link to some best practices that would provide both high availability (priority at the moment) and eventually load balancing for our site. We're probably looking at some sort of 2 SQL server mirrored system and 2 ISS web servers to start with.
Thanks in advance.
We have two Windows 2008 domain controllers. We installed the second DC only a few months ago. We also have a TFS 2012 server on the network.
Today, when the older DC crashed, TFS stopped working completely. Local users received messages such as "You are not authorized to access ServerName\Collection". Remote users received messages such as "The server was used in your last session, but it might be offline or unreachable".
So my question is, why did TFS not use the second, newer DC instead of just crashing along with the first DC?
I’ve started using rsnapshot as my backup system for home PC. I really like the idea of hard links and how they are handled. But can’t find best workflow. Currently I keep my snapshots on the same partition and let’s say, copy newest one to a pendrive at the end of the week.
Cloud storage is what I’m looking for. As of rsnapshot, Dropbox doesn’t fit my needs. More over there is no way to make it respect hard links — all snapshots are treated as a full snapshot.
Renting a server is pretty expensive so my question is, are there better alternatives for backup in the cloud? I would like to benefit from hard links and send only incremental backups, just like in my local host.
Is there a way to manage a Hyper-V cluster that runs on a Windows Server 2008 R2 Datacenter from a Windows 8.1 Pro workstation?
I've downloaded and installed the Remote Server Admin Tools for 8.1 (http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=39296), but when I enable the Hyper-V manager, it tells me that I can't manage Hyper-V servers on 2K8 or 2K8R2.
Related, the Failover Cluster Manager barfs with a similar error.
How do I manage my old servers with my new workstation?
I am a .net programmer trying to create this setup:
I want this server to be inaccessible through DMZ accept for IPSEC connections, and to also have a private network which will be accessible through another windows 2008 server which will host vpn.
That is how our windows 2003 infrastructure works and I am trying to do the same with 2008 servers, are there any guides or documentations that have this scenario?
I have got a windows server 2003 with partitioned Hard drive 10Go and 80Go, and i want to improve the storage capacity as the little partition 10Go is almost full.
So i have got choice between partition the hard drive to equal parts, or set up a new hard drive with better storage capacity.knowing that the server has to be on service as soon as possible.
Which one may be the better solution that takes less time and less risks?

I am very new in server management thing. I want to make email accounts like [email protected].
I know something to do with Sendmail thing , but dunno what ?
I am on Ubuntu 10 server.
So I have a box running a Windows Server 2008 R2 in my LAN, which is running, among other things, a voip server used by other people. I myself am in the same subnet with the server, while the other users are not.
Now, maybe on average twice a day, all the other users get disconnected from the server (and if I take a remote desktop connection to it, I'm not able to open any web pages either). These disconnections usually last only about 5 seconds, but sometimes they may last up to a minute. What could possibly cause this?
I have all the updates installed from windows update and the motherboard of the server is asus p5b deluxe (if that is of any interest).
edit: Forgot to mention that my own internet connectivity stays intact while the server's does not, and both computers are behind the same router.
I created a database using a november CTP preview of MS SQL Server 2008R2. Is it possible to transfer this database to use with older version, SQL Server 2008?
I use Ubuntu 14.04, 64-bit. I installed Virtualbox and was testing another Linux OS (Deepin). My system froze and I could not get to a TTY session to reboot. I had to do a hard restart and when Ubuntu restarted I got various error codes one of which was "kernel panic - fatal exception in interrupt" Booting to Advance mode and attempting repairs did not work (fsck, grub repair, etc)
I reinstalled Ubuntu and chose the option to keep my files intact. I can now access my system but many programs I have installed do not work.
My question is; I have a Deja-Dup backup (but only of my Home directory), is it better to restore my backup files or do I have to reinstall all of my programs? The weird thing is, the programs I verified using the Software Center to see if they were installed are checked as installed, but won't appear in Dash.
When I leave my server idle for about 10 minutes the network will stop responding to outside connections. If I get on the server and attempt to use the network(ping google for example) there will be a delay for a few seconds and then it works. After this incoming connections work again until I leave it idle again. Why does this happen and how can I fix it?
Hello,
we are a small business company (60-100 emploees) handling financial data. We want to have a secure E-Mail Server. What is the best in-house solution? Our laws force us to ?eep the server physically at our place.
Is Exchange secure enough, or are we better off with Linux and Postfix+Dovecot?
For that reason we will hire a system-administrator, but whats more secure solution?
Thanks in advance
my friend's company has a win2008 server, not R2, and it's really slow, it has 8G ram, has a SAP business one running on it, and it's also an AD, DHCP, DNS server, has Kaspersky 6 AV running as well. CPU usage is constantly 100%, physical memory is around 70%-90% even close everything, disable AV, if check processes, taskmgr.exe and windows explorer use like 40% each sometimes, do you have any suggestion what could be
I have lab of 80 computer in my school.
I need to run terminal server on each pc using remote desktop service of Microsoft server 2003. I need to run applications like Java, .NET, wamp, turbo c and other low memory applications like ms office and internet.

If you need any other information feel free to ask.
I've seen many questions about how to run multiple sql servers on one server, but I would like to run mysqld as a user-level process and completely self contained in a folder (I have no permissions outside my user folder).
I spent some time using the --defaults-file=my.cnf, but it still seems to conflict with the system-level mysql server that's running.
Does anybody know how to do this?
Thanks in advance!
I'm not a very experienced Server Administrator and I'm trying to set up a new one I just got.
I'm Using IIS7 and DNS Server
What I need is that a url such as: mail.domainA.com points to www.domainB.com/webmail
And I want to do this for all other domains... I want all of my domains that start with mail., point to www.domainB.com/webmail
In short: I need a Subdomain to redirect to another URL...
An improvement would be to let the subdomain as it is on the address bar on the redirection, if possible...
Any help?
I'm upgrading from Server 2003 to Server 2008 for a domain with 100 users.
Any good check-lists out there for things to think about for moving the users.
My netbook is a Windows7-Ubuntu 12.04 dual boot. in gparted the strcture looks like
Partition filesystem size
/dev/sda2 extended 152.86GiB
__/dev/sda6 ext4 149.04GiB
__/dev/sda5 linux-swap 3.81GiB
/dev/sda3 ntfs 100MiB
/dev/sda4 ntfs 145.13GiB
/dev/sdb1 fat32 149.05GiB
I want to backup my ubuntu 12.04 installation that is sda2 (sda6 + sda5) to sdb1.
As you can see sda5 +sda6 is 152.86 GB where are sdb1 is only 149.05 GB. Can I backup only sda6(149.04GB) without losing any data? That is to say, will I be able to restore my ubuntu using only sda6 and later add the needed swap?
Edit: Made it readable.
