• How much the distance and ms can affect on the download speed ?

  Let's consider A (client) and B (server) where A makes download from B. How much can a bad routing from A to B affect the download speed ? For example A does a tracert to B and get a response of 10 steps where the avg ms is around 300 with 10% packet loss at the 4 step and when the connection is normal the avg from A to B is 10 ~ 30 ms. Could this sort of impact reduce A download speed drasticaly or as long as both side and routes have enough link for the full speed of A from B and vice-versa it should maintain the same speed ? Besides tracert and the ping analyse of A to B what else is used to identify the problem ? If you need extra information please let me know.

• How to Setup Ubuntu Mail Server with Google Apps?

  I have a domain, let's call it foobar.com. All of the MX records for foobar.com point to Google's mail servers because I am using Google Apps for your domain to manage it. It's great because everyone gets all the advantages of GMail, but our e-mail addresses aren't @gmail.com. I also have a server. Primarily, it's a web server, but it also serves other things. One of the things it serves is the web site for foobar.com and also sites for various virtual hosts such as shop.foobar.com and forum.foobar.com. The server is running Ubuntu 8.04, because I like using LTS releases in production. The thing is, there are various applications running on the server that need the ability to send out emails. Various applications, like the cron jobs, send me e-mails in case of errors. Some of the web applications need to send e-mail to users when they forget their passwords, to confirm new registered users, etc. Lastly, it's nice to be able to send e-mail from the command line using the mail command, or mutt. How can I setup the mail on the web server to go through the Google apps mail servers? I don't need the web server to receive mail, though that would be cool. I do need it to be able to send mail as any legitimate address @foobar.com. That way the forum application can send mails with [email protected] in the from field, and the ecommerce application will have [email protected] in the from field. Also, by sending the mail through the Google servers, we can avoid a lot of the problems with the e-mails being blocked by various spam filters on the web. Google's SMTP servers are trusted a lot more than mine would be. I'm pretty good with administering Linux systems, but I am absolutely brain dead when it comes to e-mail. I need step by step directions from beginning to end on how to set this up. I need to know every thing to install, and every single change to the configuration files that is necessary. I have tried following various howtos and guides in the past, but none of them were quite right. Either they didn't work at all, or they offered a configuration that is not what I wanted. • Explorer hijacked by a trojan

  I managed to catch a newish trojan that my Anti virus program wasn't able to detect. I'm usually not that bad at technical stuff regarding computers but I really don't know what to do with this one anymore. The trojan somehow managed to get my Windows to recover it every time I try to remove it by deleting it's exe (called some weird name located in Programs "asdza/saddasn.exe" (example only)). It also sets an entry in my autostart. It starts a second explorer.exe and tries to connect to some server obviously trying to steal data. (glad I still have my firewall) How can I get rid of this trojan, I really need help. It is new and probably unrecognized by all major virus scanners.

• Running NginX (with Apache) and cPanel/WHM

  I was wondering if its a good idea to be running NginX as the webserver (on port 80) and Apache as the reverse proxy (on port 8080) with cPanel/WHM being used as a control panel? I also installed Nginx Admin so the configuration for NginX is managed by WHM. The reason I am asking is because I came across an article (http://kbeezie.com/view/apache-with-nginx/) which explains how to setup Apache as a reverse proxy but it states If you are using a control panel based hosting such as cpanel/whm, this method is not advised. Most of the servers configuration is handled automatically in those cases, and making manual changes will likely lead to problems (plus you won’t get support from the control panel makers or your hosting provider in most cases). Anyone have any past experiences with this and can say if its good/bad idea?

• How Will Mac OS X Snow Leopard Upgrade Work?

  I am relatively new to Mac OS X. I got my MacBook in January, and I have never experienced a new version of the operating system. I am wondering if I should simply upgrade my install to Snow Leopard. I come from Windows where it is advised to do a complete reformat. I would rather not do this, however, and I have a feeling that due to Mac OS X' POSIX based nature, it might actually not be all that bad if I upgrade. I guess if things end up screwing up I can simply go ahead and reformat, but I am wondering what it is like to upgrade systems running Mac OS X. I wouldn't want my Snow Leopard installation to be somehow deficient due to certain inconsistencies within the system.

  I have a VPS hosting with a VZFS file system. How can I determine maximum file size of VZFS partition? UPD: Free space (or total space) is not what i need. Sometimes file cannot occupy a hole partition volume - fat16 with 2Gb limit is a good example. I need to use a large database file (say, 64Gb) and so I need to know if a file system of VPS hosting will cope with it. It is easy to calculate for an ext3 filesystem using tune2fs, but VPS uses VSFS by Virtuozzo, and it is documented bad. Is it any generic way to calculate maximum file size for some filesystem in linux?

  I have registered URI scheme for my app. When I open it with "Run.." or in browser, it runs in hosted directory. For ex. Ive opened url in webpage, program's working dir is in browser. What I want? I want to run program test.exe located at C:\data\test.exe and to use dir. C:\data so it could use other data in relative path. so test.exe would access file .\file.txt without using absolute path Hope I wrote it understandable, sorry for bad English.

• VGA cable casuing resolution issue

  Hello, I recently bought a new VGA cable . When connected Windows 7 detects my monitor as a generic plug and play monitor. The resolution goes bad with the screen blurred. This problem disappears when i connect my original VGA cable. Also Windows 7 detects my LG monitor correctly in this case. I am pretty sure it is something to do with the VGA cable but have no idea what could be the possible issue. Any pointers would be very much appreciated.

• Website loading until initial script finishes

  Hi, i have a highly used server (running plesk). I have some long scripts that take a while to process (huge mysql database). I have found then in 1 browser, i run the script and while it is loading i cannot view any other parts of the site until the script finishes, it seems that all the requests go off, but they don't get served until the initial script finishes. i thought this may be a server wide issue, but it is not. If i use another computer i can view the site fine, even on the same computer with a different browser i can navigate fine, while the script still loads. I think it much limit the number of requests per session. Is this correct? is there any way to configure this to allow for 2-3 other requests per session? It is really bad that when i am on the phone to a client, i have just run a long report, but cannot use the site or follow what they are saying until the page has loaded? Chris

• Acrobat 8 on Windows 7 64-bit

  Here's the situation I'm in. I have Acrobat 8 on Wows 7 (64-bit) and anytime I create PDFs any numbers on the page I'm PDFing come through as garbage. Everything else on the page comes out fine, just the numbers are messed up. They appear as random symbols. I've uninstalled, reinstalled. Applied all updates, not applied updates, nothing seems to help. Mayube I'm a bad searcher, can't put in the right search terms, but I can't find anything that seems to point me in a direction on this. ANy ideas?

• Troubleshooting a crash with Windows 7

  I have a folder with several thousand videos (All .MPG extensions). When I open the folder with these videos, it shows up fine, but as I start scrolling down, it crashes the Windows Explorer. I removed the Length column and it was still crashing. I then removed the Date column and the problem disappeared. How do I go about troubleshooting this problem or at least identifying the file that's causing the issue.

  I am lost on choosing a good miotherboard at a decent price for my Intel i7-930 CPU. I have read bad things about all of them so far. Issues with RAM not working correctly, Windows not loading with USB keyboards plugged in and all kinds of nightmare stories. Here is my needs. - 6g/b SATA 3 - USB 3.0 - Cheaper is better - Support for up to 24gb of RAM, I will start out with only 12gb though - I will use 64bit v. of Windows 7 so the 4gb RAM limit should not be a problem from my OS - Should be able to boot even if I have a USB keyboard plugged in. If you have experience with a motherboard that meets these specs, please do tell about it. I appreciate any help, I am stuck right now on picking a good board.

  I am building a SaaS product. When a user signs up for an account they must select an alias for their site --------.getlaunchpoint.com. Right now I have an A record *.getlaunchpoint.com that points to the ip address server. However, with Azure I am not given an IP address. The suggested implementation is to make use of a CNAME. I need to create a CNAME for *.getlaunchpoint.com - getlaunchpoint.cloudapp.net GoDaddy does not support CNAME wildcards. Searching on Google I'm getting conflicting information... is CNAME wildcard a bad practice? I run into the same problem with Amazon EC2 if I want to make use of load balancers because you cannot tie a public IP address to an Amazon Load Balancer. Amazon also suggests the use of a CNAME. Any help would be appreciated.

• Software that supports ATA Secure Erase Command

  We have a lot of drives that need to be sanitized. NIST SP 800-88 recommends software that uses the ATA Secure Erase command. That's apparently the only way to be sure that the drive is properly wiped, due to bad-block remapping and such. I know that this functionality is available in hdparm. The problem with that approach is that it is inconsistent on multiple platforms, occasionally times out, doesn't have error-checking logic, and doesn't check the resulting drive to make sure that it has, in fact, been erased. So a proper program might use hdparm, but hdparm by itself isn't an answer. I'm looking for open source software that implements ATA Secure Erase. Ideally it will be a bootable disk image like DBAN, but it will use the ATA command.

• File corruption when copying different file on raid 1

  I have a RAID 1 configuration of 2 1TB drives on a Fedora 12 box. Most of what is stored there are video files that are numerical labeled. The problem I'm having is that I had one of the video files get corrupted. I copied a replacement from a backup and replaced the bad file and now it works fine. However, after doing this the next numbered file goes from 350MB to 200KB and all but about .5 second of video disappears. If I then replace that file it happens to the next one down the line. Ex: Replace corrupt file 1.avi and file 2.avi shrinks to 200KB. Replace now corrupted 2.avi and it works but 3.avi gets screwed up. I have run SMART tests on the drives and they report fine. Does anyone have any tests I can run to try to figure out what is going on? EDIT: It is a two disk software RAID 1 with an ext4 filesystem

• SQL Query fields change to uppercase on upload to server.

  Hi There, I have just finished developing an app using CodeIgniter. When I upload it to my Host (Hostgator shared) some of the SQL text is converted to uppercase and rendering the app unusable. In my database I have two tables client and transaction. When I upload the App to the server client and transaction is replaced with all caps. Obviously this is bad as MySQL queries are case sensitive. At first I was uploading with FTP and thought FTP was to blame. I then zipped up the app and uploaded the archive, unpacking it on the server shell. Still no joy. Any ideas on how to fix this? At the moment I just have to go into the server and edit my queries back to lowercase.. Cheers in advance for any ideas.. --Conor

• Imap server woes with Android Gingerbread email and Thunderbird

  I run my own mail server and use UW's imapd/popd daemons to provide service. This week I just upgraded my OG Droid to a new Droid 3, running Android 2.3.4 (Gingerbread). The email client is much improved over the previous one. But now I have a bad interaction when I try to access email using imap from Thunderbird on a laptop or desktop. Frequently Thunderbird will stop receiving any email at all, and it will appear only on the Droid. Sometimes a Thunderbird restart will make the mail appear, but none of my "deletes" will be recorded, so when I start Thunderbird again, all my old email reappears. If I kill all of the open imap daemons and restart xinetd, I can force it to behave for maybe a session. I've tried turning off IDLE service (push email) on both sides, to no apparent avail. I've also tried installing DroidMail with the same result.

• WesternDigital SmartWare - still problematic?

  I've seen a lot of bad press on WD SmartWare (I think it comes on most WD backup devices now, such as their MyBook product line), mostly related to how it's impossible to remove properly or replace. There are allegations (I couldn't tell how true they were) that it has/is a rootkit, as well. Most of the articles are a couple of years old, so I'm wondering if SmartWare is still just as problematic as it was. Does it still have a nasty rootkit reputation and should I just stick with the Windows 7 built-in backup system, or is the current SmartWare generation improved and better behaved?

• Excessive Outbound DNS Traffic

  I have a VPS system which I have had for 3 years on one host without issue. Recently, the host started sending an extreme amount of outbound DNS traffic to 31.193.132.138. Due to the way that Linode responded to this, I have recently left Linode and moved to 6sync. The server was completely rebuilt on 6sync with the exception of postfix mail configurations. Currently, the daemons run are as follows: sshd nginx postfix dovecot php5-fpm (localhost only) spampd (localhost only) clamsmtpd (localhost only) Given that the server was 100% rebuilt, I can't find any serious exploits against the above stated daemons, passwords have changed, ssh keys don't even exist on the rebuild yet, etc... it seems extremely unlikely that this is a compromise which is being used to DoS the address. The provided IP is noted online as a known SPAM source. My initial assumption was that it was attempting to use my postfix server as a relay, and the bogus addresses it was providing were domains with that IP registered as their nameservers. I would imagine given my postfix configuration that DNS queries for things such as SPF information would come in with equal or greater amount than the number of attempted spam e-mails sent. Both Linode and 6Sync have said that the outbound traffic is extremely disproportionate.   Hi, I've recently installed a server in colocation, and my server is rebooting every 4.5-5.5 minutes. Regardless of the OS I run, it reboots. I have all ECC memory in the server, so it should correct errors if there is a bad bit in the memory, right? It's weird because it always happens about 4.5-5.5 minutes after bootup. My motherboard is a Supermicro X8DTL-iF. I read on a blog that another person had the problem, and supermicro recommended to do a BIOS update. Is this the right course of action?

• Looking for fault-tolerant, multi-CD/DVD burning software

  A few years back, I saw an open-source application that created fault-tolerant, multi-CD backup sets. The thought was that if a few sectors went bad on one CD, the data could be reconstructed from others similar to a RAID 5 hard-drive setup. I did some searching and I could not find the application again. Does anyone know of a application that works in this manner. It needs to work with both CDs & DVDs. Linux or Windows will be OK.
