• SharePoint: Numeric/Integer Site Column (Field) Types

  What field type should you use when creating number based site columns as part of a SharePoint feature? Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 provides you with an extensible and flexible method of developing and deploying Site Columns and Content Types (both of which are required for most SharePoint projects requiring list or library based data storage) via the feature framework (more on this in my next full article.) However there is an interesting behaviour when working with a column or field which is required to hold a number, which I thought I would blog about today. When creating Site Columns in the browser you get a nice rich UI in order to choose the properties of this field: However when you are recreating this as a feature defined in CAML (Collaborative Application Mark-up Language), which is a type of XML (more on this in my article) then you do not get such a rich experience.  You would need to add something like this to the element manifest defined in your feature: <Field SourceID="http://schemas.microsoft.com/sharepoint/3.0"        ID="{C272E927-3748-48db-8FC0-6C7B72A6D220}"        Group="My Site Columns"        Name="MyNumber"        DisplayName="My Number"        Type="Numeric"        Commas="FALSE"        Decimals="0"        Required="FALSE"        ReadOnly="FALSE"        Sealed="FALSE"        Hidden="FALSE" /> OK, its not as nice as the browser UI but I can deal with this. Hang on. Commas="FALSE" and yet for my number 1234 I get 1,234.  That is not what I wanted or expected.  What gives? The answer lies in the difference between a type of "Numeric" which is an implementation of the SPFieldNumber class and "Integer" which does not correspond to a given SPField class but rather represents a positive or negative integer.  The numeric type does not respect the settings of Commas or NegativeFormat (which defines how to display negative numbers.)  So we can set the Type to Integer and we are good to go.  Yes? Sadly no! You will notice at this point that if you deploy your site column into SharePoint something has gone wrong.  Your site column is not listed in the Site Column Gallery.  The deployment must have failed then?  But no, a quick look at the site columns via the API reveals that the column is there.  What new evil is this?  Unfortunately the base type for integer fields has this lovely attribute set on it: UserCreatable = FALSE So WSS 3.0 accordingly hides your field in the gallery as you cannot create fields of this type. However! You can use them in content types just like any other field (except not in the browser UI), and if you add them to the content type as part of your feature then they will show up in the UI as a field on that content type.  Most of the time you are not going to be too concerned that your site columns are not listed in the gallery as you will know that they are there and that they are still useable. So not as bad as you thought after all.  Just a little quirky.  But that is SharePoint for you.

Servers hosting Oracle products which are clients of an NTP server (Network Time Protocol) may be particularly susceptible to this issue as the NTP server is updated. Linux distributions which may be affected include Oracle Enterprise Linux, Red Hat Enterprise Linux, Oracle VM and Oracle Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel. Asianux 2 and 3, based on RHEL 4 and 5, may also be affected. One report of correction to high agent CPU using Note 1472421.1 on SLES11 has also been reported. Not all customers will be affected, but those, who are affected, may observe higher than normal CPU consumption on their Linux environments where JVM's are utilized.  In Oracle Enterprise Manager ( EM ) , this problem can manifest itself as high CPU consumption with the EM Agent process (which runs on a JVM in EM 12c, for instance).  It is possible that the OMS is also affected. We would advise customers to review the description of this problem in MOS Note 1472651.1 and take action if they observe that their environment is affected. • Eclipse Hell . . . Failed to read the project description file (.project)

  I think Eclipse is trying to make me miserable. A couple of hours ago, my project was working and compiling well. Suddenly that all changed. Eclipse somehow wipes out all changes I have made to my files(activity, manifest etc.) I make sure to save often but when I go to run the project, I get the error that I have a build error. I checked and there was none, so I go to close Eclipse, so I can reopen and see if the errors will go away. Instead what happens is Eclipse wipes clean all my files and I end up with a project on disk with lots of blank code files. I try to run anyway, and I get the error message below. Failed to read the project description file (.project) for 'com.example.android.nfc.simulator.FakeTagsActivity.FakeTagsActivity'. The file has been changed on disk, and it now contains invalid information. The project will not function properly until the description file is restored to a valid state. Anyone have an idea what in the world this is about and how I can rectify this?

• TeamCity error: svn: connection refused by the server

  We have a Continuous Integration environment setup with TeamCity and subversion. TeamCity gets the latest source from svn and does a build (Visual Studio) on every commit. Sometimes we get the following TeamCity error when the build runs. Doing a couple of force builds gets TeamCity running succesfully. • ASP.NET MVC tries to load older version of Owin assembly

  As a bit of context, I'm developing an ASP.NET MVC 5 application that uses OAuth-based authentication via Microsoft's OWIN implementation, for Facebook and Google only at this stage. Currently (as of v3.0.0, git-commit 4932c2f), the FacebookAuthenticationOptions and GoogleOAuth2AuthenticationOptions don't provide any property to force Facebook nor Google respectively to reauthenticate users (via appending the appropriate query string parameters) when signing in. Initially, I set out to override the following classes: FacebookAuthenticationOptions GoogleOAuth2AuthenticationOptions FacebookAuthenticationHandler (specifically AuthenticateCoreAsync()) GoogleOAuth2AuthenticationHandler (specifically AuthenticateCoreAsync()) yet discovered that the ~AuthenticationHandler classes are marked as internal. So I pulled a copy of the source for the Katana project (http://katanaproject.codeplex.com/) and modified the source accordingly. After compiling, I found that there are several dependencies that needed updating in order to use these updated assemblies (Microsoft.Owin.Security.Facebook and Microsoft.Owin.Security.Google) in the MVC project: Microsoft.Owin Microsoft.Owin.Security Microsoft.Owin.Security.Cookies Microsoft.Owin.Security.OAuth Microsoft.Owin.Host.SystemWeb This was done by replacing the existing project references to the 3.0.0 versions and updating those in web.config. Good news: the project compiles successfully. In debugging, I received an exception on startup: An exception of type 'System.IO.FileLoadException' occurred in [MVC web assembly].dll but was not handled in user code Additional information: Could not load file or assembly 'Microsoft.Owin.Security, Version=3.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=31bf3856ad364e35' or one of its dependencies. The located assembly's manifest definition does not match the assembly reference. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80131040) The underlying exception indicated that Microsoft.AspNet.Identity.Owin was trying to load v2.1.0 of Microsoft.Owin.Security when calling app.UseExternalSignInCookie() from Startup.ConfigureAuth(IAppBuilder app) in Startup.Auth.cs. Unfortunately that assembly (and its other dependency, Microsoft.AspNet.Identity.Owin) aren't part of the Project Katana solution, and I can't find any accessible repository for these assemblies online. Are the Microsoft.AspNet.Identity assemblies open source, like the Katana project? Is there a way to fool those assemblies to use the referenced v3.0.0 assemblies instead of v2.1.0? The /bin folder contains the 3.0.0 versions of the Owin assemblies. I've upgraded the NuGet packages for Microsoft.AspNet.Identity.Owin, and this is still an issue. Any ideas on how to resolve this issue?

• Unable to regress web application from AJAX Control Toolkit 3.0 back to 1.0

  I was recently asked to stop using the Ajax Control Toolkit 3.0 in my application and need to go back to 1.0. Luckily I only have one calendar control which I don't believe will be affected by this. I have removed the reference to the 3.0 .dll and added a reference to the 1.0 .dll. • PreferenceActivity and theme not applying

  Hi all I have set the theme in the manifest file like this: android:theme="@android:style/Theme.Light" But I have a problem in the Preferences Activity, in the main preferences the theme shows ok, but if I get to a sub preference, the theme gets messy, it is not white as it should, it is all dark, and the font is black so you can't see much, and when I start clicking on any items they will get sometimes white as they should but revert to black soon after. This is only happens on 2.1, in both the real device and emulator. Tested on the emulator running 1.6 and it was working correctly. • Strong Naming an assembly using command line compile

  I am trying to use NAnt in order to compile and sign an assembly using the vbc compiler. I have a project set up and am able to successfully sign the assembly compiling with VS2010. When I try to sign it using the command line I get this error: vbc : error BC30140: Error creating assembly manifest: Error signing assembly -- The parameter is incorrect. What is the correct way to do this with vbc? --EDIT: I have found that MSBuild also does not like having the AssemblyKeyFile attribute as I have defined it in the AssemblyInfo.vb, it gives the same failure message. So the only way I can currently get this to build correctly is to set properties on the project to tell it which key file to use and to sign the assembly.

  I'm converting an existing project into a library project. I configured the original project as a library project and added an application project which references the original project as a library. The library project has an activity (MainActivity) and its layout (main.xml). The application project declares this activity as the main activity in the manifest like this: <activity android:name="com.example.MainActivity" android:label="@string/app_name"> <intent-filter> <action android:name="android.intent.action.MAIN" /> <category android:name="android.intent.category.LAUNCHER" /> </intent-filter> </activity> When I run the application project I get the following error... android.content.res.Resources$NotFoundException: Resource ID #0x7f030002 ...on the following line of the onCreate method of the main activity: setContentView(R.layout.main); 0x7f030002 is the ID of R.layout.main in the library project. The application project has no main resource. If I run the original project I don't get this error. Both projects neither have compilation errors nor warnings and are built with Android 2.2 with min SDK version 3. What might be the problem?

Including: Refreshing the cache Using a different favicon that works on other websites Using a favicon generating website Using a Photoshop favicon plugin Using an absolute path Using a relative path It works fine in all the other browsers. I'm using IE8 in Vista via Parallels on a Mac. • General type conversion without risking Exceptions

  I am working on a control that can take a number of different datatypes (anything that implements IComparable). I need to be able to compare these with another variable passed in. If the main datatype is a DateTime, and I am passed a String, I need to attempt to convert the String to a DateTime to perform a Date comparison. if the String cannot be converted to a DateTime then do a String comparison. So I need a general way to attempt to convert from any type to any type. Easy enough, .Net provides us with the TypeConverter class. Now, the best I can work out to do to determine if the String can be converted to a DateTime is to use exceptions. If the ConvertFrom raises an exception, I know I cant do the conversion and have to do the string comparison. Most variable types have a TryParse method which returns a boolean to allow you to determine if the conversion has succeeded or not. But there is no TryConvert method available to TypeConverter. CanConvertFrom only dermines if it is possible to convert between these types and doesnt consider the actual data to be converted. The IsValid method is also useless. Any ideas? EDIT I cannot use AS and IS. I do not know either data types at compile time. So I dont know what to As and Is to!!! EDIT Ok nailed the bastard. Its not as tidy as Marc Gravells, but it works (I hope). Thanks for the inpiration Marc.   hello! I have an animation block that worked fine when runnung the app on iphone OS 2.2. Now I compile the same code for iphone OS 3.0 and it doesn't work. UIViewAnimationTransition trans = UIViewAnimationTransitionFlipFromLeft; [UIView beginAnimations: nil context: NULL]; UIView *forview = [[self view] superview]; [UIView setAnimationTransition: trans forView:forview cache: YES]; [UIView setAnimationDuration:1.0]; [[self navigationController] popViewControllerAnimated:NO]; [UIView commitAnimations]; What the code does, it uses the navigation controller to change the top most view, but with the flip transition and not with the built in one. any ideas on what might have change in the sdk or what I'm doing wrong? thanks!!

The use of this context can result in unexpected behavior for serialization, casting and dependency resolution. In almost all cases, it is recommended that the LoadFrom context be avoided. This can be done by installing assemblies in the Global Assembly Cache or in the ApplicationBase directory and using Assembly.Load when explicitly loading assemblies. It's nightmare for me...!!! I am using VS 2008 profession, XP sp2 Any suggestions , please ?? Thanks.
