  Google Chrome’s default search engine is Google. This makes perfect sense; the only problem is that it uses localized Google – for example, Google France or Google Israel. This impacts the interface language, and sometimes even the text orientation. Here’s how you can fix this and get “international” Google results with an English interface. First, we need to figure out what search query we’re going to use. Go to Google.com and execute a simple query for a single word – say “cats”. If you get real-time results, hit Enter so that the address bar updates with the query URL. • Thunderbird compact is taking forever

  One day I came in to work and found that our development server - a Ubuntu box had a full hard disk. I did a bit of investigation using the du command and it seems like mozilla thunderbird is the major culprit. One of the mailboxes used to get a lot of spam so I guess this accounts for the 667GB. I opened up Thunderbird to see how much space the inbox actually takes up and it turns out to be approximately 500MB - over 1000 times less than the stuff that has not been compacted over the years. So i right clicked on the inbox directory in the tree on the left of Thunderbird and selected 'compact'. I left it for about 12hours but even after that it still said 'compacting folder' on the status bar. I don't use Thunderbird on this PC - it belonged to a colleague who has left the company, however I do occasionally need to look through the inbox for references to the project I am working on, so deleting all traces of Thunderbird is not an option. My question is - is there any way I can monitor the progress of Thunderbird's compacting function? I would really like to know how long it is going to take. Also is there any way I can speed up the compacting process?

• In-Application Support Made Easier

  With the availability of Oracle UPK 3.6.1 and Enablement Service Pack 1 for Oracle UPK 3.6.1 (Oracle Support login required for both), there are quite a few changes for content admins to absorb. In addition to the support added for dozens of application releases, patches and new target applications, we've also added features to make implementing and using In-Application Support even easier. First, the old Help Menu Integration Guides have been updated and combined into a single In-Application Support Guide. If you integrate UPK content for user assistance, or if you're interested in doing so, read the new guide! It covers all the integration steps, including a section on the new In-Application Support Configuration Utility. If you've integrated content in multiple languages, or if you've ever had to make configuration changes for UPK Help Integration, then you know how cumbersome it was to manually edit javascript files. No longer! The Player now includes a configuration utility that provides a web browser interface for setting all In-Application Support options. From the main screen, you see a list of applications covered by the published content. Clicking on an application name takes you to the edit configuration screen where you can set all Player options for that application. No more digging through the Player folders to find the right javascript file to edit. No complicated javascript syntax to make changes. And with Enablement Service Pack 1 we've added a new feature we're calling the Tabbed Gateway. The Tabbed Gateway is a top-level navigation bar for Help Integration. And all tabs, links, and text are controlled with the Configuration Utility... I think the Tabbed Gateway is a really cool and exciting feature for content launch.   Have you noticed that the Properties Command has been removed from the Context Menu in Firefox 3.6? If you have been missing it here is how to get it back. Before With the newest version of Firefox you may have noticed a very useful command missing from the “Context Menu”. Here you can see that when we right clicked on the article link we were unable to “access” the properties for it… Same article and the same problem when trying to “access” the properties for one of the images. After Once you have installed the extension you can once again “access” the properties for those links… And those images… Looking very good… Conclusion If you have been frustrated with the removal of the “Properties Command” from the “Context Menu” in Firefox 3.6, you can now add it back in just a few moments. • Why does my computer crash when I minimise the last window?

  I am runnung Ubuntu 12.04 LTS. If I have a few windows open (say four to six, not a large amount), and minimise all by pressing Ctrl+Super+D, they all minimise immediately with no problems. However, if I minimise them one at a time, by clicking the minimise button with my mouse, the last one often hangs. Usually it will appear as a ghost on the screen for a while, semi-minimised (in other words, shrunk toward the Unity launcher bar, half-size or smaller, and semi-transparent). Usually it will eventually clear; sometimes the computer just freezes and I have to restart it. It doesn’t seem to matter what the window actually is. Just now, I had to restart my computer with Skype* semi-minimised. I’ve seen it freeze before with the Terminal semi-minimised (and the Terminal wasn’t even doing anything at the time). The only pattern is that it’s always the last window minimised which freezes, and that minimising all windows together using the keyboard shortcut works fine. What on earth is going on, and how can I stop it? * I hate Skype, but I need it for work.

• Screen shots and documentation on the cheap

  Occasionally I am surprised to open up my toolbox and find a great tool that I've had for years and never noticed.  The other day I had just such an experience with Windows Server 2008.  A co-worker of mine was squinting to read to screenshots that he had taken using the "Print Screen, paste" method in WordPad and asked me if there was a better tool available at a reasonable cost.  My first instinct was to take a look at CamStudio for him, but I also knew that he had an immediate need to take some more screenshots, so I decided to check and see if the Snipping Tool found in Windows 7 is also available in Windows Server 2008.  I clicked the Start button and typed “snip” into the search bar and while the Snipping Tool did not come up, a Control Panel item labeled “Record steps to reproduce a problem” did. The application behind the Control Panel entry was “Problem Steps Recorder” (PSR.exe) and I have confirmed that it is available in Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 but have not checked other platforms.  It presents a pretty minimal and intuitive interface in providing a “Start Record”, “Stop Record”, and “Add Comment” button.  The “Start Record” button shockingly starts recording and, sure enough, the “Stop Record” button stops recording.  The “Add Comment” button prompts for a comment and for you to highlight the area of the screen to which your comment is related.  Once you’re done recording, the tool outputs an MHT file packaged in a ZIP archive.  This file contains a series of screen shots depicting the user’s interactions and giving timestamps and descriptive text (such as “User left click on “Test” in “My Page – Windows Internet Explorer”) as well as the comments they made along the way and some diagnostics about the applications captured. The Problem Steps Recorder looks like a simple solution to the most common of my needs for documentation that can turn “I can’t understand how to make it do what you’re reporting” to “Oh, I see what you’re talking about and will fix it right away”.  I you’re like me and haven’t yet discovered this tool give it a whirl and see for yourself.

• Disaster Recovery Plan&ndash;Rebuild System Disk (Dell Server 2900 with PERC RAID controller)

  Goal: Since the system disk is a RAID 1 mirrored set, we can rebuild the shadow set by replacing one of the good sets with a blank disk Steps Shutdown and power down server Remove the disk from bay 9, which is part of the system shadow set. Put this disk on the shelf Insert blank/old disk into the empty bay     Label the new disk before inserting it into the empty bay       Power up server During the booting process, the following message appears: “Some configured disks have been removed from your system…”       Press ‘C’ to Load Configuration utility             Press 'Y' to confirm to load the foreign configuration       In this example, the system shadow set is Disk Group 2.  (Before proceeding, confirm this is the disk group in your case).  Expanding the physical disks shows a disk in bay 8 and a missing disk in bay 9.  This is correct.   Now, we have to include the new inserted disk in this group       RAID controller reporting bay 9 is empty       There may be times when the new disk is seen as a foreign disk.  In this case, do the following:     Foreign disk is reported in bay 9 CTRL-N (Next Page) to Foreign Mgt All the disk groups will be displayed.  Typically, the disk group containing the foreign disk will be grey.  To remove the foreign disk Highlight Controller Press F2 Select Foreign Select Clear (do NOT import the configuration!)       Clear the foreign configuration Now the disk can be brought into the system shadow set disk group as a hot spare   To include the newly inserted disk into the system shadowset disk group, it must be brought in as a hot spare Highlight Disk Group 2 (VD Management) Hit F2 Select 'Manage Ded. HS'     Manage dedicated hot swap Select the disk in bay 9 (Hit space bar to select) Tab to 'OK'.  Hit the return key     Select hot spare to bring into RAID 1 mirror set   Rebuild automatically commences     Rebuild in process   Restart now or restart after rebuild is completed

• Bit by bit comparison of using Java or Python for unit testing frameworks and Selenium

  Currently we are in the process of finalizing which language out of Java, Python should be used for Automation using selenium webdriver and a suitable unit testing frameworks. I have made use of Junit, TestNG and webdriver while using with Java and have designed frameworks without much fuss before. I am new to python though I came across pyhton's unit testing frameworks like unittest, pyunit, nose e.t.c but I have doubts if they would be as successful as testNG or Java. I would like to analyze point by point when used with selenium webdriver as below: 1)I have read that as Python is an interpreted language hence it's execution is slower, so say if I have to run 1000 test cases which take about 6 hours to run in Java, would python take considerably longer time for the same test cases like 8 hours? 2)Can the Python unit testing framework be as flexible as a Java unit testing framework like testNG in terms or Grouping the tests, parallel execution, skipping test. e.t.c 3)Also one point that I think of is that Python with selenium webdriver doeasn't have as big or learned community as we have for Java with webdriver, say if I run into trouble with something I am more likely to find an answer for Java as compared to python? 4)Somewhat related to point 3, is it safe to rely on tools, plugins or even webderiver's python's binding as a continuously well maintained? 5)One major drawback as I see while using python's unit testing framework is lack of boilerplate code or libraries for nicely illustrative HTML reports preferably historical reports with Pie charts, bar graphs and timelines as we have in case of Java like Allure, TestNG's default reports, reportNG or Junit reports with the help of ANT as shown below Allure Reports Junit Historical reports Also I would like to emphasize on the fact if there is a way for one to write the framework in java and make libraries or utilities according to out application in webdriver which can easily be called or integrated in with python code or modules? That would actually solve the problem for us as the client would be able to use the code we write in Java and make use of the same or call it from their python modules?

• Correct drivers for AMD Radeon™ HD 7650M

  So, I have a Sony Vaio sve15118fg running Ubuntu 12.10 which comes with an AMD Radeon™ HD 7650M graphics chip. This was all working fine until some updates (note sure what they were) came through, after installing my laptop now no longer boots properly, specifically: Upon attempting to boot the screen starts flicking violent striped horizontal lines. This can only be corrected via the power button. Attempting to do anything in recovery - bar dropping to a root shell - runs fsck which ends up hanging (although the system still responds there is no HDD activity). This is remedied via Ctrl+Alt+Delete to restart the system. Running fsck manually from the root shell completes successfully. I have attempted numerous things including removing all propriety drivers, Trying the two installed propriety drivers, installing the latest beta driver from AMD. etc. These all yeild various results, such as the same as above, or a gnome-fallback session, or a gnome-shell session with various flickers and graphical artifacts. So, I am wondering, what the heck do I have to do to get this to work?!? I don't really game, especially in ubuntu, so I just want a working system! not fussed about 3d acceleration of whatever...

• UEFI/GPT Win 7 Load Failure in Dual Boot and no GRUB2 [Ubuntu 12.04]

  Configuration: MBB: ASRock X79 Extreme6 Win 7 installed on a INTEL 40GB SSD (GPT partitioned) Ubuntu 14.04 on a CORSAIR 30GB SSD (Ext4 and SWAP) I had Windows 7 installed previously in UEFI mode, using 3 partitions (GPT) and works fine if left alone. In UEFI BIOS settings I can see sometimes a "Windows Boot Manager" and other times (?) a "UEFI Intel" entry for INTEL HDD and Windows will boot properly selecting the one available at that time. I installed Ubuntu 14.04 after Win 7 w/o changing any UEFI BIOS settings and it works fine only if the BIOS is set w/ the Ubuntu partition as the first drive to boot, in AHCI mode. If both SSD drives are connected, the Win7 Intel boot drive can be chosen as first boot device but only as an "AHCI Intel drive" (No "Windows Boot Manager" nor "UEFI Intel device" options available in BIOS Boot menu) and Win7 will not load properly as long as the Ubuntu Crucial SSD is NOT PHYSICALLY DISCONNECTED. Windows will try, start booting for few seconds but will fail replacing Win7 logo and that startup animation with w/ the "old" white progress bar and then and will notify that there is a issue and prompt the user to try to Load Win 7 in Normal Mode again or try a Recovery Mode to fix it. If I let Windows INTEL HDD boot via BIOS/UEFI - Windows Boot manager selection, I may see the purple screen of Grub2 loaded for a while, but there's no selection for Ubuntu or Windows and/or then machine is not booting, showing a black screen and a small command prompt cursor blinking on top. So far the only option I see to have Ubuntu boot side by side w/ Win 7 is to reformat the Win7 SDD and set it boot in legacy BIOS mode with a MBR instead of GPT. Per my understanding this is a quite complex issue to fix (Rod Smith's answer was pretty helpful: UEFI boot on my Asus k52f) but any other suggestions are welcome. I find a bit odd that I can boot properly Windows7 SSD or an Ubuntu DVD using a DVD drive set in UEFI-BIOS in "AHCI mode" and w/ using "UEFI/Windows Boot Manager" booting option but I cannot boot a secondary SSD-HDD w/ Ubuntu having the same BIOS/UEFI Boot configuration. Looks like plugging the second SSD [the Ubuntu partition] is interfering with boot options in UEFI-BIOS.

• Bulgogi to Beignets

  While it’s still a full month away, I’m getting super excited about my upcoming trips. May and June are chock full of events, two of which I’ll have full announcements for within the week.  In mid May I’ll be driving to Dallas to take my 2nd trip to Korea (the bulgogi part).  Seeing a bunch of old friends from my first trip as well as taking a week for some deeper personal things. While in my absence, June 1st-4th, I’ve setup a tour across Arkansas and Texas for two Microsoft employees who work on the Visual Studio & Visual Basic team to talk at various user groups and companies.  Look for my announcement within the next couple of days. • Lubuntu Stability Problems

  I installed Lubuntu 11.10 from scratch a few days ago, now I can't even run aptitude without crashing from the mess it's made of the package system. (yes I added a non-offical repository, because I needed firefox 8) I'm a new user. So I don't know. Did I make a mistake by loading Lubuntu? I really like the LXDE stuff. but so many things seem very buggy. ***edit I think besides the sound problems, all of my other problems are with either LXDE or with openbox. And I think the sound problem is Lubuntu specific also. Problems like windows not popping up, windows not getting painted. Windows flashing in the panel for no reason, Windows losing their title bar occasionally, mousewheel changing desktops when i'm clearly in a window, LXDE panel not responding to clicks, applications not launching from the menu, applications not launching from firefox downloads window, applications crashing when I don't do anything but click on them. Pretty sure all this stuff is openbox or LXDE. This is just too much work to keep Lubuntu running. It's a lemon. (sorry I realize I should be constructive but I'm tired) It's pretty clear that openbox needs some damn bugfixes for compatibility with Oneric. And LXDE isn't that great either. I expect things to launch when I click on them. I think installing the acpid package is what made it clear to me. If 20 seconds after installing the package (from the offical repo), linux has already crashed, then I'm in the wrong damn neighborhood.

• View Word Definitions in IE 8 with the Define with Bing Accelerator

  Do you need an easy way to view word definitions while browsing with Internet Explorer? The Define with Bing Accelerator will display definitions in the same (or a new) tab and save you time while browsing. Using Define with Bing The installation consists of two steps. First, click on Add to Internet Explorer to start the process. Next you will be asked to confirm the installation. Once you have clicked Add your new accelerator is ready to use (no browser restart required). Whenever you encounter a word that needs defining highlight it, click on the small blue square, go to All Accelerators, and then Define with Bing. There are two ways to access the definition: Hover your mouse over the Define with Bing text to open a small popup window Click on Define with Bing to open a definition search in a new tab Being able to access a definition or explanation in the same tab will definitely save you time while browsing. In the example shown here you can get an idea of what SCORM means but clicking on the links inside the popup window is not recommended (webpage opens in popup and is not resizable). In the situation shown above it is better to click on Define with Bing and see more information in a new tab. Conclusion The Define with Bing Accelerator can be a very useful time saver while browsing with Internet Explorer. Finding those word definitions will be a much more pleasant experience now. In C#, you can use a “using” directive to create aliases of namespaces or bring them to the global scope: namespace Fluent.IO { using System; using System.Collections; using SystemIO = System.IO; In JavaScript, the only scoping construct there is is the function, but it can also be used as a local aliasing device, just like the above using directive: (function($, dv) { $("#foo").doSomething(); var a = new dv("#bar"); })(jQuery, Sys.UI.DataView); This piece of code is making the jQuery object accessible using the $ alias throughout the code that lives inside of the function, without polluting the global scope with another variable. The benefit is even bigger for the dv alias which stands here for Sys.UI.DataView: think of the reduction in file size if you use that one a lot or about how much less you’ll have to type… I’ve taken the habit of putting almost all of my code, even page-specific code, inside one of those closures, not just because it keeps the global scope clean but mostly because of that handy aliasing capability.

  Windows Azure is a platform that allows you to write software, run software, or use software that we've already written. We provide lots of resources to help you do that - many can be found right here in this blog series. There are two primary resources you can use, and it's important to understand what they are and what they do. The Windows Azure Software Development Kit (SDK) Actually, this isn't one resource. We have SDK's for multiple development environments, such as Visual Studio and also Eclipse, along with SDK's for iOS, Android and other environments. Windows Azure is a "back end", so almost any technology or front end system can use it to solve a problem. The SDK's are primarily for development. In the case of Visual Studio, you'll get a runtime environment for Windows Azure which allows you to develop, test and even run code all locally - you do not have to be connected to Windows Azure at all, until you're ready to deploy. You'll also get a few samples and codeblocks, along with all of the libraries you need to code with Windows Azure in .NET, PHP, Ruby, Java and more. • What groupware/project-management apps (preferably self-hosted webapp) do you recommend for a small dev shop?

  I run a small Drupal consulting shop and we've been trying different groupware solutions for what seems like ages, yet nothing we've found seems to be a good fit. We don't need CRM-overkill such as SugarCRM offers -- it's just too much for our small size. We do need git integration (at a minimum, an easy way to associate commits with issues) Time tracking on configurable or 15m increments per-project issue tracking billing (incl. recurring billing for support contracts, etc) some sort of per-project notes/wiki for things like login credentials, client contact info, etc. Contact logging (Client foo called at 2:20pm and asked to add bar to the spec, signed addendum with pricing due to client NLT CoB today, to be returned by CoB tomorrow) Open source solutions are greatly preferred to closed ones Most of all, it should be very efficient to use. Several solutions just fell out of use here because they required too many clicks for simple, frequent tasks like logging time spent on an issue or noting a call from a client. It shouldn't take 20 minutes to make a note. Edit: I almost forgot to mention: we're a mixed Linux/Mac shop with no Windows users.
