• What can I do to lower bandwidth cost on a bandwidth heavy site?

  The easiest answer is CDN but I'd like to ask. A friend of mine has a server that is used for mirror downloads. He says he is doing about 10TB of bandwidth a month which shocked me (I wonder if he is lying). I seen his site and he has no ads. I suspect he might close his website once he gets the bill. Anyways I was wondering since his CPU/RAM is not being used and his HD usage is around 15gb what he can do to lower cost if he continues this site. I said put up ads but I don't know if ads would cover it I found one CDN which offers $0.070 / GB. 10240gb (10TB) * .07 = $717 a month. That seems a little steep but he is using lots of traffic due to it being a mirror site. Also using a CDN doesnt make sense as he doesn't need multiple servers hosting the files in different areas (which is one reason he isn't using that now). He just needs a big upload pipe Is there something he can do? At the moment he is paying $200 a month on a dedicated server and he is using WAY more bandwidth then he should be using. Side question: Can gz-ing files large already compressed files help? like on (zip, rars, etc)

• attach / detach mssql 2008 sql server manager [SOLVED]

  An external consult wrote a guide on how to copy a database. Step two was detach the database using Sql Server Manager. After the detach the database was not visible in the SQL Server Manager... Not much to do but write a mail to the service provider asking to have the database attached again. The service porviders answer: Not posisble to attach again since the SQL Server security has been violated". Rolling back to last backup is not the option I want to use. Can any one give feedback if this seems logic and reasonable to assume that a detached database in a SQL Server 2008 accessed through SQL Server Manager cannot be reattached. It was done by rightclicking the database and choosing detach. -- update -- Based on the comments below I update the question with the server setup. There are two dedicated servers: srv1: Web server with remote desktop and an Sql Server Manager srv2: Sql server that can be accessed through the Sql Server Manager on the web server -- update2 -- After a restart of the server the DBA could suddenly do the attachment of the database. And I guess that after the restart it was a simple task. So all of your answer were rigth! It seems that I can only mark one as a correct answer so I marked the first answer correct. • LAMP server VM issues

  After getting a recommendation to salvage a wiki by installing a LAMP server, I went on the prowl for a good virtualized one. I used the VMware Player version. Since the windows box has Bonjour, I can, for example, go to http://lamp.local. and it works see the web client. The problem is, I can't ssh to a directory to scp the files I need, mount a usb thumbdrive (usbfs is unsupported) nor get samba working. I can't even update the ubuntu installation, it fails. I've tried bridged, nat and host-only networking settings in VMware Player. Bridged gives me an undefined IP, while the other two each have different IPs. All three settings allow me to access the web config, but none of them give me samba access. Windows usually freezes, then reports that it cannot connect. I'd rather not wipe a box to do a dedicated install, is there I way I can get this VM working, or are there better LAMP VMs out there? This one came already working and set up with VMware Player, so I thought it would be perfect... Thanks,

  I forgot how all this works. I have a GoDaddy account, using my own DNS and whatnot. I'm having trouble getting my email to work. They said I need to update my MX records. basically, I have the following. 184.168.30.42 is the domain's IP address, obviously. gamengai.com. 14400 IN NS n1 gamengai.com. 14400 IN NS n2 ns1 14400 IN A 184.168.30.42 ns2 14400 IN A 184.168.30.42 gamengai.com. 14400 IN A 184.168.30.42 localhost 14400 IN A 127.0.0.1 ftp 14400 IN A 184.168.30.42 www 14400 IN A 184.168.30.42 mail 14400 IN A 184.168.30.42 subdomain 14400 IN A 184.168.30.42 gamengai.com 14400 IN MX 10 mail Mail doesn't work though... they say to make the following change: 0 smtp.secureserver.net 10 mailstore1.secureserver.net So should the last line point to mailstore1.secureserver.net instead of mail in the last field? What about the other line? I had this working at one time, but it's totally gotten away from me. It's a virtual dedicated server and their support for this stuff is pretty bad... almost as bad as my admin skills since I went the programmer route.

• S5000XVN Intel Motherboard - Only sees 12 out of 16GB of RAM

  So I have an older Intel S5000XVN motherboard, here are the specs CPU Arch : 2 CPU - 2 Cores - 2 Threads CPU PSN : Intel Xeon CPU 5160 @ 3.00GHz CPU EXT : MMX, SSE (1, 2, 3, 3S), EM64T, VT-x CPUID : 6.F.6 / Extended : 6.F CPU Cache : L1 : 2 x 32 / 2 x 32 KB - L2 : 4096 KB Core : Woodcrest (65 nm) / Stepping : B2 Freq : 2985.21 MHz (331.69 * 9) MB Brand : Intel MB Model : S5000XVN NB : Intel 5000X rev 31 SB : Intel 6321ESB rev 09 RAM : 16384 MB FB-DDR2 RAM Speed : 331.7 MHz (1:1) @ N/A Slot 1 : 2048MB (5300) Slot 1 Manufacturer : Kingston Slot 2 : 2048MB (5300) Slot 2 Manufacturer : Qimonda Slot 3 : 2048MB (5300) Slot 3 Manufacturer : Kingston Slot 4 : 2048MB (5300) Slot 4 Manufacturer : Qimonda Slot 5 : 2048MB (5300) Slot 5 Manufacturer : Kingston Slot 6 : 2048MB (5300) Slot 6 Manufacturer : Qimonda As you can clearly see, CPU-Z says I have 16GB of PC2-5300 RAM installed. For some reason in both BIOS and in Windows the maximum usable RAM is 12GB instead of 16GB. I have a dedicated video card connnected, so it can't be stealing RAM to use for the GPU (the S5000XVN does not have any onboard video). I am running Windows Server 2008 R2 x64 as the primary OS - so there should not be a memory limitation imposed on me from the OS. Has anyone experienced this before? Any ideas on how I can actually use all 16GB of RAM? I plan on using this machine to use for a Hyper-V server and have x2 Quad Core Xeon CPUs on the way as I write this post.

• How to direct reverse proxy requests using wildcard vhosts

  I'm interested in running a reverse proxy with 2-3 virtual machines behind it. Each internal server will run multiple virtual hosts, and rather than manually configuring each individual vhost on the proxy (a variety of vhosts come and go too often for this to be practical), I would like to use something which can employ pattern matching in a sequential order to find the appropriate back-end server. For example: Server 1: *.dev.mysite.com Server 2: *.stage.mysite.com Server 3: *.mysite.com, dev.mysite.com, stage.mysite.com, mysite.com Server 4: * In the above configuration, task.dev.mysite.com would go to Server 1, dev.mysite.com would go to Server 3, yoursite.stage.mysite.com to Server 2, www.mysite.com to Server 3, and yoursite.com to Server 4. I've looked into using Squid, Varnish, and nginx so far. I have my opinions regarding their respective desirability and general suitability, but it's not readily apparent if any of them can handle dynamic server selection in this manner and not require per-vhost configuration. Apache on the other hand can do this handily and simply, but otherwise (aside from being well-known and familiar) seems very poorly suited to the partly-performance-serving task. Performance isn't actually a major concern yet, but it seems foolish to use Apache if another system will perform far better and can also handle the desired 'hands-free' configuration. But so is frequently having to adjust the gateway for all production services and risk network-wide outage...and so also is setting oneself up for longer downtime later if Apache becomes a too-small bottleneck. Which of these (or other) reverse proxies can do it/would do it best? And maybe I should post this as a separate question, but if Apache is the only practical option, how safe/reliable/predictable is apache-mpm-event in apache2.2 (Ubuntu 12.04.1) particularly for a dedicated reverse proxy? As I understand it the Event MPM was declared "safe" as of 2.4 but it's unclear whether reaching stability in 2.4 has any implications for the older (2.2) versions available in official/stable package channels of various distros.

• Apache2 - 500 internal server error

  i'm running a VPS with Linux CentOs 6 with 4 GB of RAM, 10 GB of HD and 2 virtual CPU Intel(R) Xeon(R)CPU L5640 @ 2.27GHz. As my host says each virtual CPU must be at least 0.5 physical cpu. At certain times of the day, those with more traffic, trying accessing my php script i receive intermittently "500 internal server error". I activate logging to debug level from apache, and also the PHP logging with E_ALL, but I can't find reference to Error 500 in any logs(I checked the right logs!). I haven't got any .htaccess file in path script. The strange thing is that the error start at first php line in the script (the previous html displays correctly, but at the first php line the script send 500 error). The cpu load is always good (max 0.15 0.08 0.01) and RAM is close to 95% but it arrived to swap just 2 times in a month with 2-5 MB. Apache works with prefork with this values: <IfModule prefork.c> StartServers 8 MinSpareServers 5 MaxSpareServers 20 ServerLimit 280 MaxClients 280 MaxRequestsPerChild 4000 </IfModule> Everthing works correctly and I don't get any error in quiet times, but i start receive errors when traffic rises (6-9000 visits per hour). Can i solve the problem increasing resources? (i can upgrade RAM up to 16 GB). It can depend from reaching MaxClients (but apache must write it on log, right?)? If I upgrade RAM to 6 or 8 GB i have to calculate MaxClients value with this? MaxClients = Total RAM dedicated to the web server / Max child process size Max child process size is around 20M.   I recently failed a PCI compliance scan because of the following: This DNS server allows unrestricted zone transfers. Attackers may be able to use this information to gain knowledge on the structure of your networks to aid in device discovery prior to an actual attack. And the suggested solution is as follows: Reconfigure this DNS server to restrict zone transfers to specific authorized servers only. I am running a dedicated Linux Centos server. My understanding is that I have to edit the /etc/named.conf file, which I have done and the the relevant part is as follows: options { acl "trusted" { 127.0.0.1; xxx.xxx.xxx.001; //this is one of the server's ip's xxx.xxx.xxx.002; //this is another server's ip }; allow-recursion { trusted; }; allow-notify { trusted; }; allow-transfer { trusted; }; }; I then restarted the named service /etc/rc.d/init.d/named restart and requested a re-scan, which failed again for the same reason. Am I missing something obvious here?

• Mail server: can't connect via POP/IMAP

  I've followed this guide on setting up a mail server on my dedicated server. I've been able to send mails from the php application I'm using and the linux commandline (using telnet, php, etc). The problem is that I cannot connect to the server via IMAP/POP which I've setup using Courier. I've tried using thunderbird but it complains that the username or password is wrong. I doubt it is the username/password but I don't know how to trouble shoot this. • How does the LeftHand SAN perform in a Production environment?

  Howdy, I previously asked this ServerFault question: Does anyone have experience with lefthands VSA SAN The general consensus looks like it does not perform well enough for a production SQL server even at a light load. So the new question is, How does LeftHand's SAN perform on the HP or Dell dedicated Hardware boxes? We are looking at the Starter SAN with 2 HP nodes in a 2-way replication, 2 ESX servers hosting a total of 2 Active Directory server, 1 MS SQL server, 1 File Server, and 1 General Purpose Server for things like Virus Scan (All Microsoft Server 2005 or 2008). The reason I am looking at LeftHand is for the complete software package. I plan to have a DR site and like how the SAN can perform an Async Replication to the offsite location without having to go back to the Vendor for more licenses. I also like the redundancy built into the Network Raid architecture. I have looked at other SANS and found different faults with them. For example, Dell's EqualLogic: Found that although the individual box is very redundant in hardware, the Data once spanned across multiple boxes is not redundant, if a node goes down you have lost the only copy of the data sitting on that hardware (One thing is certain, all hardware fails... When? is the only question.). I have used an XioTech SAN as well.. Well worth the money BTW, but I think it is overkill for the size of the office I am targeting. The cost to get the hardware redundancy in the XioTech makes it a little out of reach for the budget I am working in. Thank you, Keith

• How can I tell which page is creating a high-CPU-load httpd process?

  I have a LAMP server (CentOS-based MediaTemple (DV) Extreme with 2GB RAM) running a customized Wordpress+bbPress combination . At about 30k pageviews per day the server is starting to groan. It stumbled earlier today for about 5 minutes when there was an influx of traffic. Even under normal conditions I can see that the virtual server is sometimes at 90%+ CPU load. Using Top I can often see 5-7 httpd processes that are each using 15-30% (and sometimes even 50%) CPU. Before we do a big optimization pass (our use of MySQL is probably the culprit) I would love to find the pages that are the main offenders and deal with them first. Is there a way that I can find out which specific requests were responsible for the most CPU-hungry httpd processes? I have found a lot of info on optimization in general, but nothing on this specific question. Secondly, I know there are a million variables, but if you have any insight on whether we should be at the boundaries of performance with a single dedicated virtual server with a site of this size, then I would love to hear your opinion. Should we be thinking about moving to a more powerful server, or should we be focused on optimization on the current server?

• Opera 10.5 RAM usage and Google Reader?

  Hi all, Today I upgraded to Opera 10.5 from Google Chrome and I have two really important questions about it. 1) Is it normal for it to use SO MUCH RAM!!!!? Closing tabs doesn't help, but opening new ones add on to the usage. I can have just 4 tabs open and it goes up to the 300MB mark and I only have 1.5GB in my laptop, 596MB of it used by the graphics card so this really unacceptable. Is there a way to fix it? 2) Why does Google Reader feel so slow and unresponsive on it? It lags so bad when I just try scrolling through the page. I know Opera is known for being really smooth while scrolling through pages. There's also a white bar at the bottom of the page that I can get rid of. It blocks the "Next" and "Previous" buttons. The test between articles is also sort of intersecting each other and that just looks completely unattractive and that's something i'm not used with any web browser. I realize there's a built-in RSS reader, but it doesn't sync across multiple computers and is very late at updating. • Looking for a short term solution to improve website performance with additional server

  I am working with a small team to run an internal website running with PHP 5.3.9, MySQL 5.0.77. All the files and database are hosted on a dedicated Linux machine with the following configuration: Intel Xeon E5450 8 CPU cores @3.00GHz, 2992.498 MHz, Cache 6148 KB, Cent OS – Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server release 5.4 We started small and then the database got bigger and now the website performance degraded significantly. We often get server space overrun, mysql overloaded with too many calls, etc. We don't have much experience dealing with these issues. We recently got another server that we were thinking to use to improve performance. Since it has better configuration, some of us wanted to completely move everything to the new machine. But I am trying to find out how we can utilize both machine for optimized performance. I found options such as MySQL clustering, Load balancer, etc. I was wondering if I could get any suggestion for this situation "How to utilize two machines in short term for best performance", that would be great.   I have a two dedicated servers to choose from depending on which one would do a better job. I plan on updating the Hard Drive space and RAM at a later date depending on how I move forward. Server 1: 500GB Hard Drive 8GB RAM 2x 64bit Intel Xeon L5420(Quad Core) @ 2.50Ghz Server2: 500GB Hard Drive 8GB RAM 2x 64bit Intel Xeon E5420(Quad Core) @ 2.50GHz I want to run a virtual machine that will host about 10 game servers, with about 16 active slots per server. It will be a mix and match from: Minecraft Counter Strike( 1.6, Source, Global Offensive) Battlefield Team Fortress I know the general consensus is virtualization is a horrible idea if you plan on running virtual servers on them. The issue is, the discussions I read do not really clearly state whether they are speaking about a virtual server running inside an OS(ie: VMware Player running on Windows with the game server in a VM) or a Hypervisor such as Xen Cloud Platform. I am trying to get a definite answer on how feasible the above would be and how much of a performance hit it might be if the VM running the game servers is on a hypervisor such as Xen Cloud Platform. My initial research lead me to believe that there wouldn't be a performance hit since the virtualization is different than running it via inside of a OS.

• subdomains to different VMs on one IP address

  I have a setup at home with an ESXi server Freenas server and several win7 clients. I have a domain refactoringme.com I set the @ and WWW domain record to my (current) IP address. I then forwarded port 80 to my local win2k3 server on my Linksys router and used host name matching to run the 5 test sites I have. That all works. Now I want to use the turnkey machines and move to dedicated VM servers. One for a wiki one for SVN etc. So how do I get www.refactoringme.com to go to one internal IP address and wiki.refactoringme.com to different internal IP address, while they both use the same external IP address? I added the additional record for wiki to my domain and pointed it to @. I figured it had to be involving a real firewall. So I installed PFSense on a VM and set it on the DMZ on my Linksys. From this point I haven't had any luck. I thought that maybe it would be in the DNS Forwarder or maybe in the Rules sections but neither have worked. Am I doing it wrong or on the right track but am missing something. Thanks for all the help.

  I'm sure a common problem with most shops is backups, their size, and the window in which you have to back up the data. What we are working with: VMware vSphere 4.1 Cluster PS4000XV Equallogic Storage Array (1.6TB Volume dedicated for Backup to Disk) Physical Backup Server with a single LTO4 drive. BackupExec 2010 R3 with the following agents, Exchange, SQL, Active Directory, VMware. Dual Gigabit MPIO Connections between all devices (Storage Array, Backup Server, VM Hosts) What we would like to accomplish: I would like to implement an efficient Backup to Disk to Tape solution where all of our VMs are backed up to the Storage Array first, and then once completely backed up to the array are replicated to tape. In the event we needed to recover, we would be able to do so directly from tape. Where we are at currently. Of the several ways I have setup the jobs in Backup Exec 2010 R3 the backup jobs all queue up at the same time, as soon as a job is finished backing up to disk it then starts that same job to tape, but pulling from the original source instead of the designated B2D location. I understand that I could create a job that backs up the "Backup to Disk" folder to tape, but in the event of restoration, I would first need to stage the data in the B2D folder before I could restore the VM. I would really like to hear from individuals in similar situations. Any and all comments and critiques are appreciated.

• squid will not listen on specific IP

  I have a public subnet with squid installed. Let's say my subnet is from 1.2.3.2 to 1.2.4.254. When I set the following: http_port 50000 http_port 1.2.3.2:50000 it is working. But when I set: http_port 1.2.4.37:50000 it is not working. It is only working with my first public IP from my subnet. The error I get when it is not working is the following: commBind: Cannot bind socket FD 10 to 1.2.4.37:50000: (99) Cannot assign requested address What is wrong with my configuration? @Zoredache I have a dedicated server and the whole subnet is defined as IP Range. When I use only the port or the first IP and doing netstat -ntlp | grep 46555 I get the following: tcp 0 0 0.0.0.0:50000 0.0.0.0:* LISTEN 25532/(squid ) When I use my specific IP, then the netstat query will show nothing, as the server does not start. I don't want squid to listen on all or the first IP, it is just a specific one it should listen to.

• Cooling for a small server room

  I have a server room about 12 feet square with an unfinished ceiling (exposed ducts and wiring). It houses a few servers (about ten, 1U and 2U) and some networking gear (four 1U switches, three routers, three modems, two cable boxes). With the door closed, it runs around 80 degrees Fahrenheit with half the servers turned on. When I turned on all the servers it reached 86 before I chickened out and propped the door open. The room is adjacent to air-conditioned office space, but does not itself have dedicated air conditioning. The ventilation for this room seems to be limited to one duct coming in at ceiling level, with a powered fan to draw air in, and one duct at ceiling level to allow air to flow out (it seems like it may just go into the drop ceiling cavity in the adjacent room). The adjacent office space stays fairly cool, but I'd prefer not to leave the door propped open all the time. There is both 110v and 208v service in the room, and plenty of power available. But there are no windows, and no floor drains (in a pinch we might be able to run a condensation hose through a small hole we'd drill in the wall to a nearby sink area, but only if absolutely necessary). I've considered portable A/C units, but I'm not sure on sizing and a lot less sure how we would run the exhaust hose(s). I suppose we could point one at the existing room exhaust duct (air return), but substantially modifying the duct is probably a no-no. I've also considered installing a fan box in the door of the room, but I'm concerned that this will only drop the temperature a little. Even right now, with all the equipment on, the room is at 83 degrees with the door open. And the main building A/C turns off daily at 6 PM to conserve energy, so the adjacent room temperature rises at night. How would you cool this room? Let's say the goal is to bring the temperature with everything running from a steady state of around 90 degrees down to 75 (equivalently, to offset the heat produced by ten 1U servers).
