  We love to hear stories about the many and varied ways our customers use the tools that we develop, but in our earnest search for stories and feedback, we'd rather forgotten that some of our keenest users are fellow RedGaters, in the same building. It was almost by chance that we discovered how the SQL Source Control team were using SmartAssembly. As it happens, there is a separate account (here on Simple-Talk) of how SmartAssembly was used to support the Early Access program; by providing answers to specific questions about how the SQL Source Control product was used. But what really got us all grinning was how valuable the SQL Source Control team found the reports that SmartAssembly was quickly and painlessly providing. So gather round, my friends, and I'll tell you the Tale Of The Framework Upgrade . <strange mirage effect to denote a flashback. A subtle background string of music starts playing in minor key> Kevin and his team were undecided. They weren't sure whether they could move their software product from .NET 2 to .NET 3.5 , let alone to .NET 4. You see, they were faced with having to guess what version of .NET was already installed on the average user's machine, which I'm sure you'll agree is no easy task. Upgrading their code to .NET 3.5 might put a barrier to people trying the tool, which was the last thing Kevin wanted: "what if our users have to download X, Y, and Z before being able to open the application?" he asked. That fear of users having to do half an hour of downloads (.followed by at least ten minutes of installation. followed by a five minute restart) meant that Kevin's team couldn't take advantage of WCF (Windows Communication Foundation). This made them sad, because WCF would have allowed them to write their code in a much simpler way, and in hours instead of days (as was the case with .NET 2). Oh sure, they had a gut feeling that this probably wasn't the case, 3.5 had been out for so many years, but they weren't sure. <background music switches to major key> SmartAssembly Feature Usage Reporting gave Kevin and his team exactly what they needed: hard data on their users' systems, both hardware and software. I was there, I saw it happen, and that's not the sort of thing a woman quickly forgets. I'll always remember his last words (before he went to lunch): "You get lots of free information by just checking a box in SmartAssembly" is what he said. For example, they could see how many CPU cores their customers were using, and found out that they should be making use of parallelism to take advantage of available cores. But crucially, (and this is the moral of my tale, dear reader), Kevin saw that 99% of SQL Source Control's users were on .NET 3.5 or above.   So he knew that they could make the switch and that is was safe to do so. With this reassurance, they could use WCF to not only make development easier, but to also give them a really nice way to do inter-process communication between the Source Control and the SQL Compare products. To have done that on .NET 2.0 was certainly possible <knowing chuckle>, but Microsoft have made it a lot easier with WCF. <strange mirage effect to denote end of flashback> So you see, with Feature Usage Reporting, they finally got the hard evidence they needed to safely make the switch to .NET 3.5, knowing it would not inconvenience their users. And that, my friends, is just the sort of thing we like to hear.

• How to convert my backup.cmd into something I can run in Linux?

  Back in the day when i was using windows(and a noob at everything IT) i liked batch scripting so much that i wrote a lot of them and one i am pretty proud of that is my backup.cmd(see below). I am pretty basic with the linux bash sudo/apt-get/sl/ls/locate/updatedb/etc... I don't really know the full power of the terminal. • Java Hint in NetBeans for Identifying JOptionPanes

  I tend to have "JOptionPane.showMessageDialogs" scattered through my code, for debugging purposes. • Copy New Files Only in .NET

  Recently I had a client that had a need to copy files from one folder to another. However, there was a process that was running that would dump new files into the original folder every minute or so. So, we needed to be able to copy over all the files one time, then also be able to go back a little later and grab just the new files. After looking into the System.IO namespace, none of the classes within here met my needs exactly. Of course I could build it out of the various File and Directory classes, but then I remembered back to my old DOS days (yes, I am that old!). The XCopy command in DOS (or the command prompt for you pure Windows people) is very powerful. One of the options you can pass to this command is to grab only newer files when copying from one folder to another. So instead of writing a ton of code I decided to simply call the XCopy command using the Process class in .NET. The command I needed to run at the command prompt looked like this: XCopy C:\Original\*.* D:\Backup\*.* /q /d /y What this command does is to copy all files from the Original folder on the C drive to the Backup folder on the D drive. The /q option says to do it quitely without repeating all the file names as it copies them. The /d option says to get any newer files it finds in the Original folder that are not in the Backup folder, or any files that have a newer date/time stamp. The /y option will automatically overwrite any existing files without prompting the user to press the "Y" key to overwrite the file. To translate this into code that we can call from our .NET programs, you can write the CopyFiles method presented below. This object is where you fill in name of the command you wish to run and also the arguments that you wish to pass to the command. I created a string with the arguments then filled in the source and destination folders using the string.Format() method. Finally you call the Start method of the Process class passing in the ProcessStartInfo object. That's all there is to calling any command in the operating system. Very simple, and much less code than it would have taken had I coded it using the various File and Directory classes. • Why does Ubuntu only detect one USB LAN adapters at a time?

  I try to connect real switch with my computer for an exam preparation, for this purpose I need more than one LAN cards, and there is only one built in LAN card in my computer. So, to get more LAN cards, I bought 4 USB Ethernet adapters (as I have 4 usb ports in may laptop 2 usb 2.0 ports, 2 usb 3.0 ports). When I plug these adapters in my computer Ubuntu only detects one LAN card from 2.0 usb ports, and one LAN card from 3.0 ports. And sometimes detects only one USB LAN from all the usb ports. Actually the real problem is Ubuntu shows these USB LAN adapters in the "lsusb", but does not list them in "ifconfig". Do both use the redo logs in the source database? Answer: Yes, they both use redo logs. Classic capture parses the redo log data directly, whereas the Integrated Capture lets the Oracle database parse the redo log record using an internal API. Question: Does GoldenGate version need to match Oracle Database version? Answer: No, they are not directly linked. Oracle GoldenGate 11g Release 2 supports Oracle Database version 10gR2 as well. For Oracle Database version 10gR1 and Oracle Database version 9i you will need GoldenGate11g Release 1 or lower. And for Oracle Database 8i you need Oracle GoldenGate 10 or earlier versions.   I've seen occasional questions on mailing lists about how to use the NetBeans Visual Library to draw lines, e.g., to make graphs or diagrams of various kinds by drawing on the screen. So, rather than drag/drop causing widgets to be added, you'd want widgets to be added on mouse clicks, and you'd want to be able to connect those widgets together somehow. Via the code below, you'll be able to click on the screen, which causes a dot to appear. When you have multiple dots, you can hold down the Ctrl key and connect them together. A guiding line appears to help you position the dots exactly in line with each other. When you go to File | Print, you'll be able to preview and print the diagram you've created. The next steps are to add a reconnect action and an action to delete a dot by double-clicking on it. Would be interesting to change the connecting line so that the length of the line were to be shown, i.e., as you draw a line from one dot to another, you'd see a constantly changing number representing the current distance of the connecting line. Also, once lines are connected to form a rectangle, would be cool to be able to write something within that rectangle. Then one could really create diagrams, which would be pretty cool.

• BizTalk 2009 - The Community ODBC Adapter: Schema Generation

  Having previously detailed the installation of the Community ODBC Adapter for BizTalk 2009, the next thing I will be looking at is the generation of schemas using this ODBC adapter. Within your BizTalk 2009 project, right click the project and select Add Generated Items.  In the resultant window choose Add Adapter Metadata and click Add to open the Add Adapter Wizard. Check that the BizTalk Server and Database names are correct, select the ODBC adapter and click next. You must now set the connection string. To start with choose set, then new DSN (data source name). You now need to define the Data Source you will be connecting to.  On the User DSN tab select Add add then driver you want to use. In this case I am going to use the MySQL ODBC Driver.  A User DSN will only be visible on the current machine with you as a user. * Although I initially set up a User DSN and this was fine for creating schemas with, I later realised that you actually need a system DSN as the BizTalk host service needs this to be able connect to the database on a receive or send port. You will then be asked to Set up the MySQL ODBC Data Source.  In my case this is a local database making use of named pipes, so I had to make sure that I ticked the "Force use of named pipes" check box and removed the "# The Pipe the MySQL Server will use socket=mysql" line from the mysql.ini; with this is place the connection would fail as there is no apparent way to specify the pipe name in the ODBC driver configuration. This will then update the User DSN tab with the new Data Source.  Make sure that you select it and press OK. Select it again in the Choose Data Source window and press OK.  On the ODBC transport window select next. You will now be presented with the Schema Information window, where you must supply the namespace, type and root element names for your schema. Next choose the type of statement that you will be using to create your schema - in this case I am using a stored procedure. *I later discovered that this option is fine for MySQL stored procedures without input parameters, but failed for MySQL stored procedures with input parameters.  (I will be posting on the way to handle input parameters soon) Next you will need to specify the name of the stored procedure.  In this case I have a simple stored procedure to return all the data held by my TestTable in MySQL. Select * from TestTable; The table itself has three columns: Name, Sex and Married. Selecting finish should now hopefully create your schemas based on the input and output from your stored procedure. In my case I have:   An empty schema for the request; after all I have no parameters for the stored procedure.  A response schema comprised of a Table Record with Name, Sex and Married children. Everything at my home was fine: Wireless identified and connected. As soon as I went to my girlfriend's house the trouble started. I couldn't connect to wireless (authentication... times out and asks for authentication) I started doing internet searching, tried a few solutions posted on line using terminal commands. No solutions. I decided to upgraded to 12.10-13.04 and that left me with a worse problem: I can no longer see ANY networks what so ever. Wireless card is ON, with out a doubt. Wired connection works. • Select videos using UIImagePickerController in 2G/3G

  Hi, I am facing a problem where-in I cannot select videos from the photo album in iPhone 2G/3G device. The default photos application does show videos and is capable of playing them, which in turn means that UIImagePickerController should clearly be capable of showing videos in photo album and selecting them. I havent tested for 3GS, but I am sure that this problem does not exist in it with reference to other threads. I have built the app for both 3.0 (base SDK) and 3.1 but with the same results. • Does Subversion have an analogue to VSS's links?

  I am migrating a Visual SourceSafe code repository to Subversion and I am running into a problem. Here is a simplified layout of our current source code tree (in VSS): project_root\ |-libs\ |-tools\ |-arch_1\ | |-include | |-source |-arch_2\ |-include |-source My problem is in our two arch_ folders. Each arch_ folder will be built for a different hardware architecture, but the contents of the two folders are practically identical. The files in arch_2 are merely VSS links to the files in arch_1, with only a small handful of exceptions. Work is generally checked into and out of the arch_1 folder, and the VSS links make sure that any code checked in here is updated in the arch_2 folder as well. Moving to Subversion, is there anything that will behave like VSS's links? That is, is there a way to have two files in separate folders magically associated with one another such that they will always be in sync with each other (changes to one will affect the other as well)? Note: I know the correct answer here is to fix the build system. The build system on this project was pieced together roughly a decade ago, back when our compiler/build system wasn't intelligent enough to compile the same folder full of source code for two different architectures. Thanks to make and updated compilers, we can re-write the build system to eliminate this dependency on two parallel source folders. However, this will take time that we don't have at the moment (we are losing our license to our VSS server and are being forced to migrate on rather short notice). I am hoping to find a Subversion solution to this problem because at the moment, our time would be much better spent making the migration run smoothly than re-writing the build system (which is next on my to-do list!). • Mercurial extensions not working in Windows 7 x64?

  We are test driving Mercurial at work. We don't want to have to enter our user/pass each time we interact with a repository, so we set up the mercurial_keyring extension. We: Installed Python 2.6.5 (32 or 64 bit, depending on the system) Installed setuptools (for easy_install.exe) easy_install keyring easy_install mercurial_keyring And then made the appropriate changes to %userprofile%/mercurial.ini in the [auth] section. It works fine on my colleague's computer (32bit xp sp3), but it does not work on my machine (Windows 7 Ultimate x64). Also noteworthy, the setuptools had to be built from source on Win 7 x64 (python setup.py bdist_wininst, then run the resulting setuptools-0.6c11.win-amd64.exe). Using just hg.exe from the Mercurial 1.5 binary installation (the .msi), I get this error when I run hg.exe: * failed to import extension mercurial_keyring: No module named mercurial_keyring I tried to change my mercurial.ini, to specify the path to the mercurial_keyring.py file, instead of having mercurial find it (since it's in the PYTHONPATH). Old: [extensions] mercurial_keyring = New: [extensions] mercurial_keyring = c:/mercurial/extensions/mercurial_keyring.py The error changes to: abort: could not import module keyring! So while providing the path to the mercurial_keyring extension works, the dependent keyring module still cannot be found. After further investigation, it appears that NO extensions work. They all produce the error: * failed to import extension [extension name]: No module named [module name] It appears that when running hg.exe, it is not aware of PYTHONPATH. I have tried: Python 2.6.5 32 bit Python 2.6.5 64 bit Building Mercurial 1.5 from source with MinGW Building Mercurial 1.5 from source with MSVC9 Using hg.exe from the 1.5 binary dist (.msi) Using the hg.py in c:\python26\scripts when building from source Various configurations in %userprofile%/mercurial.ini Using setuptools (easy_install.exe) to install keyring and mercurial_keyring Building keyring and mercurial_keyring from source (python setup.py bdist_wininst) Nothing works. The closest I've got is using hg.py when building from source. It at least doesn't give me errors, and actually creates %userprofile%/wincrypto_pass.cfg when I enter my credentials. But on subsequent requests, it doesn't enter the credentials automatically. It prompts me for them again. Interestingly, TortoiseHG is using the keyring. I just can't get it to work on the command line. I think something is going on with Win 7 x64 that is preventing mercurial (hg.exe) from seeing the PYTHONPATH, so it can't find any of the installed modules. Does anyone have extensions working in Win 7 x64? Specifically with the binary installation of mercurial (not hg.py)?

  For those that follow me I’ve been away from blogging and twittering for a couple of months. This is the reason. For the last few months I’ve been working with a cross-functional team putting together a new product from the people that run WordPress, the free premiere blogging platform. The result is a new product we call SharePress, a highly extensible blogging and content management platform with the usability of WordPress and the power of SharePoint combined into a single product. SharePress gives you SharePoint sites that are SEO-friendly delivered with a Web 2.0 ease of use, leveraging all of the existing abilities of SharePoint and WordPress that we know today. The Reason Back in December I was approached by the WordPress team about building a new platform that took advantage of the power of SharePoint but the ease of WordPress. I’m no stranger to WordPress and it’s 5 minute no-holds-barred install (I’ve always wanted SharePoint to do this!) and I run my personal blog on WordPress as does my better half, Princess Jenn. There’s always been a pitch by so-called Web 2.0 applications to deliver the power of SharePoint but the ease of [insert product here] over the past year or so. I checked each and every one of them out, but they fell woefully short when it came to SharePoint’s document management, versioning, and customization. They try, but it’s never been up to par in my books. On the flipside, SharePoint has always been tops in collaboration in the Enterprise but it’s painful to develop web parts, UI customization can be tricky, and there’s just no user community for something as simple as themes and designs. The Product Enter SharePress. Is it SharePoint? Is it WordPress? It’s both, and neither. Everything you like about both products are there but this is a bold new product that is positioned to bring SharePoint to the masses while maintaining the fidelity of an Enterprise 2.0 collaboration platform. SharePress delivers on all fronts including: The ability to leverage any WordPress/Joomla/Drupal/DotNetNuke themes and skins inside of SharePoint Run any WordPress/Drupal/Joomla/DotNetNuke/SharePoint plug-in/module/web part/feature works out of the box with SharePress SEO-friendly URLs and pages Permalinks for all content All the features of SharePoint Server 2010 (including InfoPath, Excel, and Access services) included in the price Small deployment footprint. You decide how much to deploy and where. Independent Database Abstraction Layer (iDal) that allows you to deploy to SQL Server 2005/2008, MySQL, and PostgreSQL Portable Rendering Engine Layer (PREL) so you host .NET or PHP on Apache or IIS (version 7 or higher). SharePress is a brand new product not built on top of any previous platform but leverages all the power of each of those applications through a patent pending technique called SharePress Multi-plAtfoRm Technology (SMART). SMART will convert PHP code on the fly into Python (using SWIG as an intermediate processor) which is then compiled to MSIL and then delivered back as an ASP.NET MVC application (output is C# or VB.NET, but you can build your own SMART converter to output a different language). Sound complicated? It is, but it’s all behind the scenes and you don’t have to worry about a thing. This image illustrates the technology stack and process: So users can load up out of the box PHP themes and plug-ins from the WordPress/Joomla/Drupal community into the SMART converter and output MSIL that is used by the SharePress engine and rendered on the fly to the end user. Supported PHP versions are 4.xx and 5.xx with version 6 support to come when it’s released. Similarly you can take any .NET application, DotNetNuke Module, SharePoint Web Part or event handler and feed it into the converter to output the same. Everything is reverse compiled into MSIL so it becomes technology agnostic. With this technology you can also with the flip of a switch have the output create PHP pages for you. This allows you to run SharePress on Unix based systems running PHP and MySQL, allowing you to deliver your SharePoint like experience to your users with a $0 infrastructure footprint. Here’s SharePress with the default WordPress post imported then a stock SharePoint collaboration site was imported. The site was then applied with the default Kubrick theme from WordPress. The Features Deploy any of the freely available 100,000 WordPress/Joomla/Drupal themes instantly to your runtime SharePress environment and preview or activate them right from your browser. Built-in Web 2.0 jQuery Enabled End User and Administrator Web Interface. Never have to remote into a server again! Run any SharePoint Web Part or Event Handler directly without modification or access to source code in SharePress. Use any WordPress/Joomla/Drupal plug-in directly in SharePress, no local admin or access to server. Just upload and activate. Upload and Activate any SharePoint Solution Package to any site remotely. No rebuilding. Changes made to sites require no compiling or rebuilding and are published immediately. Password Protected Content. You can give passwords to individual posts, articles, pages, documents, forms, and list items. A powerful polymorphic Captcha system backs the security interface and vendors can easily tie into smart card readers, fingerprint readers, and retina scanners for authorization and identification. OpenID, Windows Live, and Windows Authentication are supported out of the box. Infinitely customizable and extensible. You can leverage plug-ins from the open source community to do practically anything, all configured and uploaded via the browser. Additionally the developer API (available soon) allows you to build extensions in .NET, PHP, and Python with little effort. Easy Importing. We have importers for Blogger, WordPress, Drupal, Joomla, DotNetNuke, and SharePoint so you can populate your site quickly and easily with full metadata modeling and creation. Banner Management. It’s easy to setup banners for your web site complete with impression numbers, special URLs, and more. Menu Manager. Everything you see is what’s available and it’s just a matter of lighting up your site with whatever feature you want to enable. The product will not be open source but source code licenses will be available to ISVs who are interested in interfacing with the API at a low level. Cost will be $25,000 USD per developer and gives you complete access to the source code to the SharePress Foundation System and the .NET 4.0 Framework source code. There are free and open source implementations of almost every programming language ever devised, and a lot of them are very good.   I have a program that makes use of the following method to get a scaled instance of an image icon: public ImageIcon createScaledImageIcon(String filename) { ImageIcon icon = new ImageIcon(filename); Image image = icon.getImage().getScaledInstance(cardWidth, cardHeight, Image.SCALE_SMOOTH); icon.setImage(image); return icon; } I don't know if it's the source of the problem or not. • How do I connect to SDF on a Mobile device from desktop application?

  C# WinForms .Net 3.5 to SQL CE 3.5 on Mobile 6.1 Device I'd like to make a connection from a desktop application to a SDF database on my Windows Mobile device while it's connected via ActiveSync. Visual Studio lets me create a Data Connection to my device. The connections tests OK and I can view the data in the database using Visual Studio. I then create a form and try to fill a DataGridView. When I run the program I get an error that the path to the data base is not valid. How am I supposed to specify the Mobile device path in the connection string? In my App.Config, I've tried variations on the path, but none of them work: connectionString="Data Source=Mobile Device\Program Files\SqlCeViaActiveSync\Orders.sdf" connectionString="Data Source=\Mobile Device\Program Files\SqlCeViaActiveSync\Orders.sdf" connectionString="Data Source=Program Files\SqlCeViaActiveSync\Orders.sdf" connectionString="Data Source=\Program Files\SqlCeViaActiveSync\Orders.sdf" The full connection string section looks like this: <connectionStrings> <add name="SqlCeViaActiveSync.Properties.Settings.OrdersConnectionString" connectionString="Data Source=Mobile Device\Program Files\SqlCeViaActiveSync\Orders.sdf" providerName="Microsoft.SqlServerCe.Client.3.5" /> </connectionStrings> Also, I did make a reference to Microsoft.SqlServerCe.Client, as I found a few articles that mentioned it was necessary.   I have multiple pages with java applet written with SWT. The problem is, applet loads only on first page, to load it on another page i need restart browser, otherwise i get following error: Exception in thread "Thread-27" java.lang.UnsatisfiedLinkError: Could not load SWT library.
