  I created a GUI and used uiimport to import a dataset into matlab workspace, I would like to pass this imported data to another function in matlab...How do I pass this imported dataset into another function....I tried doing diz...but it couldnt pick diz....it doesnt pick the data on the matlab workspace....any ideas?? • MVVM and avoiding Monolithic God object

  I am in the completion stage of a large project that has several large components: image acquisition, image processing, data storage, factory I/O (automation project) and several others. Each of these components is reasonably independent, but for the project to run as a whole I need at least one instance of each component. Each component also has a ViewModel and View (WPF) for monitoring status and changing things. My question is the safest, most efficient, and most maintainable method of instantiating all of these objects, subscribing one class to an Event in another, and having a common ViewModel and View for all of this. Would it best if I have a class called God that has a private instance of all of these objects? I've done this in the past and regretted it. Or would it be better if God relied on Singleton instances of these objects to get the ball rolling. Alternatively, should Program.cs (or wherever Main(...) is) instantiate all of these components, and pass them to God as parameters and then let Him (snicker) and His ViewModel deal with the particulars of running this projects. Any other suggestions I would love to hear. Thank you!

• How does Windows' 'Open with' work?

  I was under the impression that when you double click a file (or choose 'Open With' from the right click menu), Windows simply calls the application with the filename as the parameter. Something like this: C: App.exe file.abc However, I just double clicked an .xls file and then checked the PEB of the Excel instance that sprang up. To my surprise the commandline did not contain the filename as a parameter. So that set me wondering. What exactly is mechanism Windows uses to have a file opened by a relevant application? Is there a special API that each application that supports such facility must expose?

  I find that I tend to write long source files in F#. Some open source projects in F# also have long source files, e.g. FPersec and F# for excel. So it would be very helpful if code folding (even very limited support) is available in VS for F#. E.g. in a module, we can fold out functions that are stable, only leave functions that are subject to change unfold. Is this feature easy to be supported, e.g. by a third party vendor?

  In my application, I have a dictionary of phrases that are used throughout of the application. This same dictionary is used to create PDFs and Excel Spreadsheets. The dictionary looks like so: GLOBAL_MRD_VOCAB = { 'fiscal_year': _('Fiscal Year'), 'region': _('Region / Focal Area'), 'prepared_by': _('Preparer Name'), 'review_cycle':_('Review Period'), ... snip ... } In the code to produce the PDF, I have: fy = dashboard_v.fiscal_year fy_label = GLOBAL_MRD_VOCAB['fiscal_year'] rg = dashboard_v.dashboard.region rg_label = GLOBAL_MRD_VOCAB['region'] rc = dashboard_v.review_cycle rc_label = GLOBAL_MRD_VOCAB['review_cycle'] pb = dashboard_v.prepared_by pb_label = GLOBAL_MRD_VOCAB['prepared_by'] Now, when the PDF is produced, in the PDF, I don't see these labels but rather, I see: <django.utils.functional.__proxy__ object at 0x10106fdd0> Can somebody help me with this? • Small, editable table of strings. Which Forms control do I want? (.NET)

  I have a small array of structs, each struct has three fields, all strings. I want to display these structs in a grid, let the user edit the strings a la Excel, and then retrieve the edited strings of course. Which WinForms control is best for this? Tried a DataGridView but setting the DataSource to the array of structs doesn't seem to work. There are myriad controls with similar names but I can't figure out what does what. All the examples I've found are geared toward using a database as the data source--I just have a simple array.

  Hi all, I am csv.reader to pull in info from a very long sheet. I am doing work on that data set and then I am using the xlwt package to give me a workable excel file. However, I get this error: UnicodeDecodeError: 'ascii' codec can't decode byte 0x92 in position 34: ordinal not in range(128) My question to you all is, how can I find exactly where that error is in my data set? Also, is there some code that I can write which will look through my data set and find out where the issues lie (because some data sets run without the above error and others have problems)?

What I need to do is to perform some operations so that I can compare the two data entries in each 'row'. • Scanning FedEx labels into a visual basic program

  I have a program that has tracking numbers entered into it and it stores them in a database and i would like to add a scanner to the mix. The scanner is acting like a keyboard and scannes just fine, the problem is scanning a FedEx number gives a 32 digit number and i am only iterested in the tracking number portion of it. I saw an example on the web for an excel macro and tried to modify it but it doesnt seem to work. Is there something i could do to just get the 12 digit number? This is what it looks like so far. • how does teamviewer find my computer even if my comp. behind of the firewall and firewall isn't conf

  Did you use teamviewer? (comic question i know... Who doesn't use it?) Do you have any idea how does teamviewer make connection even if i am behind the router, firewall, switch and my local firewall..? I'm trying to imagine a connection that is between remote machinge and my computer. Remote machine is sending the packets (and its header (for instance, destination IP, message body)) to me but it only knows my id number(which is given by my local teamviewer application). And this packets are reaching to my computer even if there is a juniper firewall (and also my windows firewall). What kind a message body is recieving by computer? (of course it is not like xml, text, html, excel :) Do you have any idea? PS. Please share your knowledge like you are explaining to beginner level user.

However I need a way in code to check the extension of the file, and display the correct Image and xsl:attribute depending on the If statement.   I need to summarize a data frame by some variables, ignoring the others. This is sometimes referred to as collapsing. E.g. if I have a dataframe like this: Widget Type Energy egg 1 20 egg 2 30 jap 3 50 jap 1 60 Then collapsing by Widget, with Energy the dependent variable, Energy~Widget, would yield Widget Energy egg 25 jap 55 In Excel the closest functionality might be "Pivot tables" and I've worked out how to do it in python (http://alexholcombe.wordpress.com/2009/01/26/summarizing-data-by-combinations-of-variables-with-python/), and here's an example with R using doBy library to do something very related (http://www.mail-archive.com/[email protected]/msg02643.html), but is there an easy way to do the above? And even better is there anything built into the ggplot2 library to create plots that collapse across some variables?

• opening iWorks documents in iPad UIWebView

  Hello, I'm writing an iPad application that has a UIWebView which I open word and excel documents in, but I want the user to be able to import those documents into the iWorks applications, Pages and Numbers, just like how you can do it in Safari if you open a document. If you open a document in Safari on the iPad, there'll be a button on the top bar that says "Open in..." and you can choose applications to open in. You get the top bar to appear by tapping on middle of the page. So is there an option you can set to allow UIWebView to show up the bar and automatically detect the content type and populate the list with applications you can import in? Or do I have to build this myself? And if I have to build my own, how do I open URLs to import documents into Pages and Numbers etc? Thanks, -David

• How to deal with large result sets with Linq to Entities?

  I have a fairly complex linq to entities query that I display on a website. It uses paging so I never pull down more than 50 records at a time for display. But I also want to give the user the option to export the full results to Excel or some other file format. My concern is that there could potentially be a large # of records all being loaded into memory at one time to do this. Is there a way to process a linq result set 1 record at a time like you could w/ a datareader so only 1 record is really being kept in memory at a time? I'd appreciate any help. Thanks

The source data comes from SSRS report. The goal is to load the data into a database via SSIS. The hopeful goal is to avoid human intervention in having to download the SSRS report into Excel or CSV.   I have a datagrid in flash 8 that has an array as a data provider. One of the items in the array is a number, which represents an amount of money. So I iterate through the array and create a new item "amountFormatted" in each line of the array. For example I have a value of 10 and a formatted value of £10.00 in the array. This formatted value then appears in the datagrid. This seems a little cumbersome and I wondered if there was a way to set some automatic function so that the column in the datagrid is automatically formatted. a bit like an excel column can have formatting applied to it.   I've never personally used any of the Data controls within Visual Studio. I need to view and edit a two-dimensional byte array, 16x15 objects. Is there any control capable of editing this information? I've tried to access data with the DataViewGrid, but am not sure how to use it. It would be great to edit this information via rows and columns, like how you can in Excel. Thank you! Times like this I wish I could just use multiple text boxes and assign them each an index value.   I'm in the need to convert excel macros into jquery code, the function is that you need to click on the plus sign to unfold and show the sub rows to modify column2 if you want to type values in column2, the other columns can't be modified. You can't straightly modify values of column2 until you unfold the parent row, because there are many sub rows belonging to parent row,say Car. The values of Name, Model, Code are existing, they are master data, no need to type or modify. please see the snapshot at folded and unfolded, besides modifying values in sub rows , I need to be able to know which sub rows are modified and values of those rows.Initially the editable columns are blank. And when you click on the minus sign, the sub rows can be folded again,but the modified values won't be lost,they are still there when unfolded again. One last requirement is it's cross devices, the code must run well on pc,mobile phone,pad. Is that possible? Many thanks.

• Using True and False to select items to print

  I have a workbook that contains rows of information that needs to printed to a seperate worksheet in excel. I am trying to utilize a checkbox to indicate which items need to print and which items need to be skipped. The checkbox is located in column "A" and once checked and the macro ran, I want it to pick up the data in each cell of that particular row, transfer it a seperate worksheet (form), prompt and save the worksheet to pdf, clear the form, and then return to the main worksheet to continue until all rows have been checked. However, right now, my code is only looping through the very first "TRUE" statement and not continuing to the rest. • How to check a file saving is complete using Python?

  I am trying to automate a downloading process. In this I want to know, whether a particular file's save is completed or not. The scenario is like this. Open a site address using either Chrome or Firefox (any browser) Save the page to disk using 'Crtl + S' (I work on windows) Now if the page is very big, then it takes few seconds to save. I want to parse the html once the save is complete. Since I don't have control on the browser save functionality, I don't know whether the save has completed or not. One idea I thought, is to get the md5sum of the file using a while loop, and check against the previous one calculated, and continue the while loop till the md5 sum from the previous and current one matches. This doesn't works I guess, as it seems browser first attempts to save the file in a tmp file and then copies the content to the specified file (or just renames the file). Any ideas? I use python for the automation, hence any idea which can be implemented using python is welcome. Thanks Indrajith
