  • Apache + SuExec + php-fpm - how to set them up?

    Hello. I wonder if there is a good guide on how to setup Apache + SuExec + php-fpm? I have a server which I am going to use several separate website. So, I need php to be run as site-owner user. As I can see, php-fpm is a little different from php-fcgi. Is there a need in mod_fcgid from Apache in this case? How to set this all up? For now my site is running Apache + mod_suphp + php-cgi, so... it's good, but a little slow. I want to preserve security and gain an ability to use APC.

  • Windows Media Based video audio converter?

    This may seem like an odd question. Right now ONLY windows media player, VLC and media player classic opens and plays my audio video correctly. Virtualdub plays it back with the wrong framerate and losses the audio, Avidemux 2.5 seems to be able to dump the audio/video but the video (like all other apps) is either a bad framerate or is wrong (glitches and bad framerate or bad dump). Nothing recognizes the audio file and when playing the video Avidemux (and most other things) die. FFMPEG cant seem to split the video or audio (using copy -an and etc) and this is getting me very angry. VLC dumps the video incorrectly when i try dumping it with that too. What can i use to convert the video? its streaming so it starts at 26mins in and ends at 28 (this is where apps have the problem. They dont know this and fudge everything or crash). I manage to dump the audio with Avidemux but virtualdub and ffmpeg says unreconized codec. Even if i cant convert it (it seems compressed enough) i want to at least attach it back into an AVI.

  • Building a DVR system for use with custom windows application (video analytics)

    Is there a good PCIe DVR capture card that has at least 4 channels as well as the hardware encoding? It would have to have decent driver support in Windows xp or windows 7. I have looked at various video capture cards as well as an integrated video capture card/motherboard from Huperlabs. But so far I have not found one with a decent review and that has good driver support that I can verify. A really small card would be nice because I am trying to get a fairly small form factor. Huperlabs stuff is pretty awesome but they are slow to get back to me and they bundle their analytics software with the hardware (extra cost for nothing) The dvr is being used for security.

  • Most efficient way to use a laptop like a desktop? [closed]

    When I'm at home (which is the vast majority of the time now in Summer), I rarely use my laptop away from my desk. When it is at the desk, I plug in a monitor through HDMI, a power cable, and a mouse and keyboard that always stay there. I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations as to a good dock or product that does a good job of transforming a laptop into a true "desktop replacement." Ideally, it would allow all the connections to remain in place, with minimal effort to take the laptop in and out of the fixture. Thanks for any suggestions!

    Hi I will be setting up a linux webserver to host WordPress on. The problem is that although I know how to do it, I don't know how to properly do it. So I'm now looking for semi-advanced tutorials that are complete and secure above anything else. I don't really mind trying a new distro, but I prefer ubuntu/debian. I read this post: Any good resources for setting up a webserver in Linux ? But these are very limited. So far not a lot of luck finding good guides and howtos.   • windows server 2008 vs ubuntu 11 [closed]

    I am working on implementing a custom server application that should be capable of handling a very large volume of traffic. I am aware that this type of question has been asked a lot, but I haven't been able to find a good answer. What I'm really looking for is for a server with given specs which OS will be able to handle a larger traffic faster and more reliably. I do not care about rights management or any other features. I am fairly good with both platforms, and so I would like to pick the OS with better performance on a clean install, and with nothing else running. Thanks in advance.

  • 2008 Sever Randomly reboots.

    I'm out of ideas here. We have a 2008 Server that keeps rebooting 2-3 times a day at completely random times with an "Unexpected Shutdown" event. There are no Dumps, no events leading to it just like it loses power then comes back online. I ran a Diagnostic of the power supply and it has had continuous power for months. In addition, the temperature of the processors are maxing out at 40 degrees Celsius. Anyone have any ideas how to figure out why this is restarting all the time? This is a DMZed Web server so it doesn't do too much process wise.     hi, I've a dell studio 1555 bought on september with Windows 7 64bit Professional on it. Audio devide works proprerly, while listening/watching audio/video contents (from disk or internet) Using VoIP Program Ventrilo Audio from others people works good, and I hear their voices clearly... Using VoIP Program such as Teamspeak 2/3, MSN, Skype I hear a really disturbed voice, and it's impossible to comprehend somethings... Anyway I can say that the first week that I've bought and installed Win7 Skype worked good, this problem happened after I installed Ventrilo... I tried to remove it (ventrilo) but nothing happened:( Please help me :D Thanks Marcx

Needs to be open-source or have a license level that grants access to source, and needs to be ASP.net (C# preferred, but could live with VB.net) Ultimately, we'll need to be able to assign facilities and instructors, manage attendees, send notifications, and build calendar views. We'll also be integrating with our website to allow on-line sign-up and other things for attendees to manage on their own. We do expect to implement quite a bit of it in-house, but we'd like as broad of a base to start from as we can get. Still, just a really good web-based meeting-room reservation system might make a good enough starting point.   • Pros/cons to turning off cable modem

    A little off the wall perhaps, but ... I have a cable modem and a router for a wireless home network. Is it a good or a bad idea to turn it off at night and during the day when we're all at work or school? Or should I leave it on 24/7. I was thinking that leaving it on constantly makes me more vulnerable to hackers, not to mention wasting electricity. (Though I'd guess the amount of electricity used by a cable modem and a router is probably pretty trivial. Still, every little bit helps.) When I have turned it off and turned it on again, it takes several minutes for it to go through its little dialog with the cable company and get me connected to the Internet again, which is annoying but not a big deal. Anyone know any good reasons one way or the other?

  • Need advice on a monitoring, reminder and warning application.

    I am a developer that also has to monitor several things on different servers. Such as: 1) Did all of the MS SQL databases backup last night? 2) Did all of the MySQL databases backup last night? 3) Were the database dumps actually copied to the right folder? 4) How much free space is left on each server's hard drives? 5) How big are folders "abc", "def", "etc" getting? 6) Send emails/alerts when thresholds are reached Etc. Just basically something to help me NOT forget such important things. I thought about writing something myself but didn't want to waste the effort if something is already out there. I would also prefer one application instead of many if I could. Thanks. EDIT Forgot to mention the operating system. These run on Windows Server 2003 and/or 2008. In fact, what would be cool is a program that supports multiple servers from one machine. Something that can log into those servers.

  • My computer keeps crashing and I just want it FIXED

    So long story short, I had my brother build me a computer for my birthday last year. I saw how good his was (also built by him) so I decided I would have him build me one. About a month after this was all finished, my computer started crashing when I when run over 3 programs. For example, an online game, a music player (spotify), skype, and a browser with a few tabs open. The way it would crash is the screen will freeze and a buzzing noise will come from whatever audio device I am using (headset, speakers) I took it to a computer tech guy and he told me my cooling system was inadequate. SOOO he led me to buy a CORSAIR H75 Liquid cooling system. Everything was good for about a week, and now it just did the same thing again. I am so freaking over this guys and I really need some help figuring out what the heck is wrong, I dont care how long it takes, just please help me.

  • Software for scanning installation process?

    I forgot what is the name of the very good software which make some kind of restore point (save registry, and program files folder, etc...) before installing any software. After you install some program (ie "Notepad++") you can easily see what registry data use new installed program, on what location are the file's is stored and many more. The reason that I'm asking for help is that I have to automate some installation of public software, so after installation I need to uninstall it, so i have to delete all junk files. The software is called something like install wizard, or wizard install I forgot. If you have any idea of other application that do same thing , or you know exactly name of that software, or you have some good idea how to solve easy solve many installation and uninstallation, please let me know.   • Error importing large MySQL dump file which includes binary BLOBs in Windows

    I'm trying to import a MySQL dump file, which I got from my hosting company, into my Windows dev machine, and i'm running into problems. I'm importing this from the command line, and i'm getting a very weird error: ERROR 2005 (HY000) at line 3118: Unknown MySQL server host '+?*á±dÆ-N+Æ·h^ye"p-i+ Z+-$?P+Y.8+|?+l8/l¦¦î7æ¦X¦XE.ºG[ ;-ï?éµ?º+¦¦].?+f9d릦'+ÿG?-0à¡úè?-?ù??¥'+NÑ' (11004) I'm attaching the screenshot because i'm assuming the binary data will get lost... I'm not exactly sure what the problem is, but two potential issues are the size of the file (2 Gb) which is not insanely large, but it's not trivially small either, and the other is the fact that many of these tables have JPG images in them (which is why the file is 2Gb large, for the most part). Also, the dump was taken in a Linux machine and I'm importing this into Windows, not sure if that could add to the problems (I understand it shouldn't) Now, that binary garbage is why I think the images in the file might be a problem, but i've been able to import similar dumps from the same hosting company in the past, so i'm not sure what might be the issue. Also, trying to look into this file (and line 3118 in particular) is kind of impossible given its size (i'm not really handy with Linux command line tools like grep, sed, etc). The file might be corrupted, but i'm not exactly sure how to check it. What I downloaded was a .gz file, which I "tested" with WinRar and it says it looks OK (i'm assuming gz has some kind of CRC). If you can think of a better way to test it, I'd love to try that. Any ideas what could be going on / how to get past this error? I'm not very attached to the data in particular, since I just want this as a copy for dev, so if I have to lose a few records, i'm fine with that, as long as the schema remains perfectly sound.   • How to prevent a URL in an email I send from being auto-linked by the recipient's email client?

    When I type a URL into an email in Outlook, it automatically converts it to a hyperlink. I can, of course, remove the hyperlink from the context menu: But, then when the email is received and when I view it in my Sent Items folder, the urls are again converted to hyperlinks. How can I prevent this? Embedded images are no good because the URL must be copy and pasteable (among numerous other reasons that this approach is not great). And it must retain the formatting applied when I send it. This answer on stackoverflow shows a good trick for preventing auto linked urls when sending an email programmatically, but I'm looking for a way to do this from the UI. Perhaps there a way to edit the HTML of the message before it is sent? If not, I guess I'm off to write an Outlook Add-in.

    Hi Folks, For someone with so much Java experience, boy do I feel clueless - thanks in advance for your help in my grocking the present (Feb, 2010) JSP environment. Here's what I am hoping to learn: Do I understand correctly that most people use Apache to "front-end" their Tomcat servers, such that Apache "talks" directly to web clients and "proxies" Tomcat servers? Do I understand correctly that Apache isn't capable of serving JSP directly but requires a server (like Tomcat)? Is there an RPM package for Fedora Core so I don't have to build one myself? Or, does Fedora Core's package installer do a good job on this one from source code? (Some do, some don't!) While I'm here asking questions; Does Tomcat come with a working example that one can start hacking on as a way to get started quickly? If not, got a good suggestion? Thanks folks, RT

Is it still a good option for everyone or is it only cost-effective for those building fringe equipment like high spec gaming platforms? Don't forget to factor in the time and effort you spend building and configuring the machine. I know that it is often worthwhile as it builds understanding of your machine, gets you exactly what you want, etc., but is it still good for your wallet or would you be better off paying someone else to do it and spend more time doing something else?

  • What's the best solution for file sharing in my case? DAS or NAS?

    I want to have in my network small, cheap and energy efficient server with will be fully customizable (Gnu/Linux, OpenBSD). What is more I want to have big, redundant storage in my network and access to it via server. I have already small terminal without hard drive (no SATA/PATA, one drive on USB) which works fine. I don't want to buy big server, or to use regular computer for that. It's not cheap. I thought about a small case (ITX?), and cheap computer in this with SATA ports, but I cannot find anything interesting :( I thought about NAS in network and server independently and booting server from NAS, I'm not sure which technologies will be good for that, and I don't know what with performance. Direct connection to NAS through network from workstation is next pro for that. What do you think about DAS? It will be good for that?
