• python and paramiko: how to check if end of ssh tunnel is still alive and reestablish if not?

  Hello all, I'm trying to achieve the following: I have two hosts A and B. A establishes a remote port forwarding tunnel on B, i.e. B is the one a port is forwarded on to some where else and A is the one that sets up the tunnel. I tried the script rforward.py that ships with paramiko and it works very well so far. (I'm running rforward.py on A, which connects to B and forwards a port of B to somewhere else) However, when B is shutting down, A doesn't seem to recognize it. I'd rather like A to recognize that B is down and to try to reestablish the connection periodically in case B comes up again. Is there a way to do this? Thanks.

• How do I wait until a console application is idle?

  I have a console application that starts up, hosts a bunch of services (long-running startup), and then waits for clients to call into it. I have integration tests that start this console application and make "client" calls. How do I wait for the console application to complete its startup before making the client calls? I want to avoid doing Thread.Sleep(int) because that's dependent on the startup time (which may change) and I waste time if the startup is faster. Process.WaitForInputIdle works only on applications with a UI (and I confirmed that it does throw an exception in this case). I'm open to awkward solutions like, have the console application write a temp file when it's ready.

• Jan 2010 Microsoft update trashed my Win XP (64bit) PC

  I waited until this morning to install these 5 updates. My ancient Win XP (32 bit) PC has no problems but my Win XP 64 bit will not start. From the startup menu none of the 5 options given (e.g. safe mode, last known good configuration, etc) work. After selecting an option, the Windows Logo screen appears. About 9 seconds later a blue screen of death flashes [I can't read the error messages because it's there for about 100 ms] then it cycles through the reboot again. PS: This is a pretty cheap mobo (Ge Force) with an AMD 3 GH chip - but until today it did actually work. What should I do? Reinstall the O/S?

• Apache mpm-itk Performance

  I manage a bunch of VPSs with memory ranging from 1GB to 8GB. Most of these websites are Joomla websites, and the servers must support multiple sites/users/S-FTP. I use mpm-itk almost exclusively (mostly due to it's convenience in these shared environments). However, I'm aware it isn't known for performance, so I need some advice on making it faster. Due to the lack of documentation when I first went the way of mpm-itk, I included only one setting in the config, and that was to limit each user to 50 clients (the rest I left up to defaults): <IfModule mpm_itk_module> MaxClientsVHost 50 </IfModule> Are there any better alternatives available? Are there any settings supported in mpm-prefork or mpm-worker that are also supported in mpm-itk? Thanks!

• Copying Data to a Master sheet from other sheets without duplicates

  I have four workbooks, three of which are for data entries, and the latter which hosts all data entered in the other workbooks; as a matter of fact, it serves as a master workbook. I need code to copy data entered in each workbook in sheet 1 to be copied to the next available row on sheet 1 of the master workbook, but if the data to be copied from these individual workbooks are duplicates, then a message box should pop up displaying that its a duplicate. To be precise, I want the users to type p in column j indicating process, and click a button in the spreadsheet to copy the data to the master sheet. I would be glad for any assistance. • Adding an host programmatically (name resolution under Windows)

  I would like to programmatically add to Windows a name / IP association so that this name can be resolved locally. This does not have to be persisted between reboots. The only way I now is to add an entry to the "hosts" file, but this feels hacky especially since I would like to automate this. Is there any way to do this using a command-line tool or a Win32 API? Perhaps by addind an entry to Windows DNS cache or something similar? Oh, and please state if this solution is Vista-compatible. Regards. Edit : Thanks, guy. Sadly, all of your answers indeed involve DNS or other servers. I was looking for a purely local solution which would work on a "standard" Windows installation. Such a thing does not seem to exist, though.

• Applying flattened css to xhtml

  Hi, I try to apply flattened css to xhtml (which get from websites). I am using css4j-0.12.1.jar (from http://www.informatica.info/projects/css/) to process the url html content. For a few urls the code seems to be hang. Even no exception is thrown. For a particular stylableelement or style code doesnot return any value and hangs. For a few websites code hang in, CSSStyleDeclaration.getPropertyValue(style); and for a few websites code hang in, CSSStylableElement.getComputedStyle(); I am using the latest jar. Could you please update me, is there any known issue or fix for this. I am not sure where to post this issue. If anyone knows please update me. Thanks in Advance.

  Does anyone know the function of the Lsh and Rsh keys in Windows 7 calculator when it is in Programmer's mode. One would think it's meant to shift bits left and right, but that doesn't seem to happen: sometimes nothing happens, other times I get a 'Result not defined' message in the display. Has anyone figured it out yet, is this a known bug? While we're at it, does anyone have suggestions for a good calculator, one with a decent reference guide / user guide (windows help doesn't seem to give any hints on what any of the keys do, in any mode).

• IE8 complains about SSL name mistmatch

  When visiting an SSL protected website, IE8 complains about the certificate name not matching the website address, but gives no information about the certificate or what name it's looking for. Visiting the same site in IE9 (or IE9 in "IE8 mode"), Firefox, Chrome, and Safari shows no problems, and that the certificate matches the address. Certificate checkers indicate everything is installed and configured correctly. Does anyone know what might be causing this? Is this a known issue or bug in IE8? I've been Googling for similar issues, but due to the uncertainty as to what's actually going on, I'm not sure what to search for. My problem reads similar to this question. However, my server is running Apache2.

  I have a medium sized WinForm App (1 Form that hosts 40 user controls) that we use in house. I want to migrate over to WPF but I cannot do a Mass ReRelease. My idea was, for now, to recreate the App 1 User Control at a time in WPF and have that hosted in the existing WinForm App. I would make them look nearly identical, at this point, so there would be no need for mass retraining. My question is more to the point of, has any one else tried this and how does the data portion work. I have recreated one of the WinForms User Controls as a WPF user Control. Do I need to publish that as a User Control Library? How, then, would I access the DAL for that UC? I use a Linq to Sql data layer.

• Parallel installation of Office 2003 and Outlook 2010

  we have a customer who is not willing to move from Office 2003 to Office 2010 but he now wants to use Office 365. As you know is Office 365 not compatible with Outlook 2003. Now he asked me if it's possible to buy and install Outlook 2010 and keep the rest as it is. I only found some guides for parallel installation of Office 2007 and Office 2010. • No command window.

  Using 7 build 7600. Wen I try to open a command window, I just get returned to my previous folder/desktop. If I try to open an extended window I get to the UAC, answer yes and again am returned. A check in Sys info reveals the command prompt is running but I can't see the window. I can have multiple instances of cmd.exe running but still no window. My video adapter is GeForce 7600 and I have no other known problems at this time. Thanks in advance.

• Lighttpd with FastCGI won't create /tmp/fcgi.sock on startup?

  I'm running lighttpd-1.4.19 on a debian 5 box and try to run web2py with fastcgi. The problem with that is, that lighttpd does not create the socket file /tmp/fcgi.sock. If I'm creating the file by myself touch /tmp/fcgi.sock lighttpd will start but will throw this error after some time running: unexpected end-of-file (perhaps the fastcgi process died): pid: 0 socket: unix:/tmp/fcgi.sock My config looks like this: fastcgi.server = ( "/handler_web2py.fcgi" = ( "handler_web2py" = ( #name for logs "check-local" = "disable", "socket" = "/tmp/fcgi.sock", "idle-timeout" = 20, "max-procs" = 1 ) ), ) Is there any known problem with running lighttpd on debian 5? • Windows 7 connect to Lion file sharing

  Trying to access my Mac from a Windows 7 computer, I fail with the infamous error 86 incorrect password. Now this appears to be a well-known problem with countless threads on the internet giving as many "solutions" as there are discussion threads about it (mostly ranging from installing third-party commercial samba servers, to switching to some other protocol, to compiling a plain-vanilla Samba installation - the latter which I will probably do when I give up this :) ) I am stubborn, and I believe there must be some problem here that can be solved or worked around, but there is surprisingly little detail about this problem. It appears to have something to do with a mismatch of authentication methods. • UITableView becomes invisible after changing data in it

  Hi I have application with TabBar that control several views. In one view i control connection to different servers.Each server provides different set of items. I display these items in UITableView on other view. I create table view like this UITableView * aTableView = [[UITableView alloc] initWithFrame:CGRectMake(X,Y,Width,Height) style:UITableViewStyleGrouped]; [[self view] addSubview:aTableView]; aTableView.da taSource = self; The problem is that Table view displayed ok first time , but if i go back to view number one and change server(changing list of items that should be displayed in table view), table view becomes invisible for some reason. If i tap on the screen in place where it should be, its becomes visible again. Ive tried to call to reloadData and setNeedDisplay in viewWillAppear of the UIViewController that hosts this table view, but without success. Any advice? Thanks

• Too much free space on FreeNAS - ZFS

  I have a FreeNAS server with 3 x 2 To disks in raidz1. I would expect to have about 4 To of space available. Also, used space as reported by zpool list does not match what's reported by du: [root@freenas] ~# du -sh /mnt/main_volume/ 2.6T /mnt/main_volume/ There are quite a few things that I dont yet completely understand about ZFS. But at the moment I am mostly worried that I misconfigured my system and that I dont have any storage redundancy. How can I make sure I did not do an horrible mistake ... • booting FreeBSD 9 from USB stick: boot error

  I am trying to boot FreeBSD 9 from a USB stick that I created following the official guidelines: dd if=FreeBSD-9.0-RELEASE-i386-memstick.img of=/dev/da0 bs=64k Booting fails with a simple 'boot error'. I have used this USB stick for quite a while for the very purpose of booting / installing new OSs, but I tried a different one anyway - same problem. I have also reproduced the issue on a different machine. I've acquired to image file over torrent which AFAIK has an md5 check built in, but I downloaded it again anyway directly from a FreeBSD mirror. Same result. Does anyone have any success with this ? I did not find anything related online which seems to suggest this is not a well-known problem. Does anyone have a thought where else to search for the cause of the problem ?

• Unlock file on Windows Server 2003 by remote desktop without rebooting

  We've several Windows Server 2003 machines running, each with its own purposes. There are scheduled jobs which synchronizes some files over SFTP using WinSCP. Very sometimes a newly copied file is left locked in the "inbox" folder without any reason. The machine's own background task (programmed in Java) can't move it to the "processed" folder anymore after processing it. Manually moving it only yields the well known error message Cannot move [filename]: it is being used by another person or program. The only resort is to reboot the machine, but we would of course like to avoid that. Any suggestions? I tried Unlocker which works fine locally at WinXP, but doesn't work at those Win2K3 machines by remote desktop (unlock option doesn't show up in rightclick context menu). I tried Process Explorer as well as described in this blog article, but it caused the server to crash (not sure if that's because it's executed through remote desktop).

• Any way to disable specific CPU sleep modes?

  I just got a new Toshiba Tecra S11 notebook, which has a Core i5 520M CPU, and it appears to suffer from a well-known problem: a high pitched noise when the CPU is idle. Googling around revealed that this is caused by a specific power-saving mode in the CPU. In most cases, C4 mode is blamed for the noise. So my question is: is it possible to disable C4 mode (or any other "sleep" mode) using some utility or BIOS setting? I don't mind if it hurts battery life. I'd appreciate any advice on this matter. It's driving me crazy.

• Using TrueCrypt with File Replication on Windows Server

  We have a few folders that are set to replicate to a DR file server off-site. One of these folders contains a file that is a TrueCrypt volume container. When this file is mounted in TrueCrypt, the file won't replicate (fair enough!). I'm looking at alternatives to improve this situation. One solution I currently have is to have a scheduled task to unmount the volume and then every morning as the volume is needed, have someone mount it. This is a pain slightly because the password is known by a few people (I'm not one and neither are my colleagues who would be performing the mounting operation) so we'd need to continually get them to come over and type it in. The other I had was to have one TrueCrypt container on each server and replicate the contents when they are mounted. I wasn't able to get TrueCrypt to see the mounted volume so I guess this is a no go. Any other solutions I have missed or a fix for the above?

• My KDE very slow in certain operations

  I have a problem with my Linux installation. It seems that the KDE code that deals with directory windows is extremely slow (on both Dolphin and Konqueror). This happens both when I click on a directory icon and when I want to open/save a file from many KDE applications. The time the window takes to open can be one minute or more. The same happens when I right click on an icon. Looking at the CPU usage, this is very low (less than 10%). Am I the only one with this problem, or is it well known and maybe already fixed? Consider that I cannot update to a more recent version of OpenSuse. • VMware Server guest systems are extremely slow with IO load on host (Ubuntu 8.04)

  We are experiencing performance issues with a VMware Server 2.x installation on an Ubuntu 8.04 host. When the host system is generating IO load (for example, copying large files as part of a backup operation), the guests (also Ubuntu 8.04) become extremely unresponsive and slow (simple Apache HTTP requests taking 5 seconds instead of the usual 200ms). We tried optimizing various aspects of the VMs, but the issue remains. Is there a known bug with VMware performance under linux if host IO load is high? Is there a way to fix this? Is this only an issue with Ubuntu systems, or have you seen it on other systems before? Thanks!
