• Adding UCM as a search source in Windows Explorer

  A customer recently pointed out to me that Windows 7 supports federated search within Windows Explorer. This means you can perform searches to external sources such as Google, Flickr, YouTube, etc right from within Explorer. While we do have the Desktop Integration Suite which offers searching within Explorer, I thought it would be interesting to look into this method which would not require any client software to implement. Basically, federated searching hooks up in Windows Explorer through the OpenSearch protocol. A Search Connector Descriptor file is run and it installs the search provider. The file is a .osdx file which is an OpenSearch Description document. It describes the search provider you are hooking up to along with the URL for the query. If those results can come back as an RSS or ATOM feed, then you're all set. So the first step is to install the RSS Feeds component from the UCM Samples page on OTN. If you're on 11g, I've found the RSS Feeds works just fine on that version too. Next, you want to perform a Quick Search with a particular search term and then copy the RSS link address for that search result. Now just click on the search icon and in the upper right search box, enter your term. As you are typing, it begins executing searches and the results will come back in Explorer. Now when you double-click on an item, it will try and download the web viewable for viewing. You also have the ability to save the search, just as you would in UCM. And there is a link to Search On Website which will launch your browser and go directly to the search results page there. And with some tweaks to the RSS component, you can make the results a bit more interesting. It supports the Media RSS standard, so you can pass along the thumbnail of the documents in the results. To enable this, edit the rss_resources.htm file in the RSS Feeds component. • Codeigniter image manipulation class rotates image during resize

  I'm using Codeigniter's image manipulation library to re-size an uploaded image to three sizes, small, normal and large. The re-sizing is working great. However, if I'm resizing a vertical image, the library is rotating the image so it's horizontal. My assumption is that the library would take a vertical image, see that the height is greater than the width and translate the height/width config appropriately so the image remains vertical. What is happening (apparently) is that the library is rotating the image when it is vertical and sizing it per the configuration. • A Simple Approach For Presenting With Code Samples

I don’t present often (hardly ever), but when I do I like the presentation to have a lot of succinct and executable code snippets to help illustrate the points that I’m making. Depending on what the presentation is about, I might just want to build an entire sample application that I would run during the presentation. In other cases, however, building a full-blown application might not really be the best way to present the code. The presentation I’m working on now is for an open source utility library for dealing with dates and times. I could have probably cooked up a sample app for accepting date and time input and then contrived ways in which it could put the library through its paces, but I had trouble coming up with one app that would illustrate all of the various features of the library that I wanted to highlight. I finally decided that what I really needed was an approach that met the following criteria: Simple: I didn’t want the user interface or overall architecture of a sample application to serve as a distraction from the demonstration of the syntax of the library that the presentation is about. I want to be able to present small bits of code that are focused on accomplishing a single task. Several of these examples will look similar, and that’s OK. I want each sample to “stand on its own” and not rely much on external classes or methods (other than the library that is being presented, of course). “Debuggable” (not really a word, I know): I want to be able to easily run the sample with the debugger attached in Visual Studio should I want to step through any bits of code and show what certain values might be at run time. As far as I know this rules out something like LinqPad, though using LinqPad to present code samples like this is actually a very interesting idea that I might explore another time. Flexible and Selectable: I’m going to have lots of code samples to show, and I want to be able to just package them all up into a single project or module and have an easy way to just run the sample that I want on-demand. Since I’m presenting on a .NET framework library, one of the simplest ways in which I could execute some code samples would be to just create a Console application and use Console.WriteLine to output the pertinent info at run time. This gives me a “no frills” harness from which to run my code samples, and I just hit ‘F5’ to run it with the debugger. This satisfies numbers 1 and 2 from my list of criteria above, but item 3 is a little harder. By default, just running a console application is going to execute the ‘main’ method, and then terminate the program after all code is executed. If I want to have several different code samples and run them one at a time, it would be cumbersome to keep swapping the code I want in and out of the ‘main’ method of the console application. What I really want is an easy way to keep the console app running throughout the whole presentation and just have it run the samples I want when I want. I could setup a simple Windows Forms or WPF desktop application with buttons for the different samples, but then I’m getting away from my first criteria of keeping things as simple as possible. Infinite Loops To The Rescue I found a way to have a simple console application satisfy all three of my requirements above, and it involves using an infinite loop and some Console.ReadLine calls that will give the user an opportunity to break out and exit the program. (All programs that need to run until they are closed explicitly (or crash!) likely use similar constructs behind the scenes. Create a new Windows Forms project, look in the ‘Program.cs’ that gets generated, and then check out the docs for the Application.Run method that it calls.). Here’s how the main method might look: 1: static void Main(string[] args) 2: { 3: do 4: { 5: Console.Write("Enter command or 'exit' to quit: > "); 6: var command = Console.ReadLine(); 7: if ((command ?? string.Empty).Equals("exit", StringComparison.OrdinalIgnoreCase)) 8: { 9: Console.WriteLine("Quitting."); 10: break; 11: } 12: 13: } while (true); 14: } The idea here is the app prompts me for the command I want to run, or I can type in ‘exit’ to break out of the loop and let the application close. The only trick now is to create a set of commands that map to each of the code samples that I’m going to want to run. Each sample is already encapsulated in a single public method in a separate class, so I could just write a big switch statement or create a hashtable/dictionary that maps command text to an Action that will invoke the proper method, but why re-invent the wheel? CLAP For Your Own Presentation I’ve blogged about the CLAP library before, and it turns out that it’s a great fit for satisfying criteria #3 from my list above. CLAP lets you decorate methods in a class with an attribute and then easily invoke those methods from within a console application. CLAP was designed to take the arguments passed into the console app from the command line and parse them to determine which method to run and what arguments to pass to that method, but there’s no reason you can’t re-purpose it to accept command input from within the infinite loop defined above and invoke the corresponding method. Here’s how you might define a couple of different methods to contain two different code samples that you want to run during your presentation: 1: public static class CodeSamples 2: { 3: [Verb(Aliases="one")] 4: public static void SampleOne() 5: { 6: Console.WriteLine("This is sample 1"); 7: } 8:   9: [Verb(Aliases="two")] 10: public static void SampleTwo() 11: { 12: Console.WriteLine("This is sample 2"); 13: } 14: } A couple of things to note about the sample above: I’m using static methods. You don’t actually need to use static methods with CLAP, but the syntax ends up being a bit simpler and static methods happen to lend themselves well to the “one self-contained method per code sample” approach that I want to use. The methods are decorated with a ‘Verb’ attribute. This tells CLAP that they are eligible targets for commands. The “Aliases” argument lets me give them short and easy-to-remember aliases that can be used to invoke them. By default, CLAP just uses the full method name as the command name, but with aliases you can simply the usage a bit. I’m not using any parameters. CLAP’s main feature is its ability to parse out arguments from a command line invocation of a console application and automatically pass them in as parameters to the target methods. My code samples don’t need parameters ,and honestly having them would complicate giving the presentation, so this is a good thing. You could use this same approach to invoke methods with parameters, but you’d have a couple of things to figure out. When you invoke a .NET application from the command line, Windows will parse the arguments and pass them in as a string array (called ‘args’ in the boilerplate console project Program.cs). The parsing that gets done here is smart enough to deal with things like treating strings in double quotes as one argument, and you’d have to re-create that within your infinite loop if you wanted to use parameters. I plan on either submitting a pull request to CLAP to add this capability or maybe just making a small utility class/extension method to do it and posting that here in the future. So I now have a simple class with static methods to contain my code samples, and an infinite loop in my ‘main’ method that can accept text commands. This tells CLAP to inspect that class for methods that might be able to handle the commands passed in. I’m also throwing in a little “----“ style line separator and some basic error handling (because I happen to know that some of the samples are going to throw exceptions for demonstration purposes) and I’m good to go. Now during my presentation I can just have the console application running the whole time with the debugger attached and just type in the alias of the code sample method that I want to run when I want to run it.

  I'm building a library to access the Google Analytics Data Export API. All the data the library accesses is in Atom format and utilises numerous different namespaces throughout. My experiments with the API have used SimpleXML for parsing so far, especially as all I have been doing is accessing the data held within the feed. Now I'm coming to write a library I am wondering whether forging ahead with SimpleXML will be adequate or whether the enhanced functionality of the DOM module in PHP would be of benefit in the future. I haven't written much code for this part of the library yet so the choice is still open. I have read that the PHP DOM module can be a better choice if you need to build an XML DOM on the fly or modify an existing one, but I'm not entirely sure I would need that functionality anyway due to the nature of the API (no pushing data to the server, for instance). SimpleXML is certainly easier to use and I have seen people saying that for read-only situations it is all you need. Essentially the question is, what would you use? Compatibility will not be an issue as the server configuration will match the application's requirements. Is it worth building the library with PHP DOM in mind or should I stick with SimpleXML for now? Update: Here are two examples of the kind of feeds I will be dealing with: Account feed Data feed

• XStream <-> Alternative binary formats (e.g. protocol buffers)

  We currently use XStream for encoding our web service inputs/outputs in XML. However we are considering switching to a binary format with code generator for multiple languages (protobuf, Thrift, Hessian, etc) to make supporting new clients easier and less reliant on hand-coding (also to better support our message formats which include binary data). However most of our objects on the server are POJOs with XStream handling the serialization via reflection and annotations, and most of these libraries assume they will be generating the POJOs themselves. I can think of a few ways to interface an alternative library: Write an XStream marshaler for the target format. Write custom code to marshal the POJOs to/from the classes generated by the alternative library. Subclass the generated classes to implement the POJO logic. May require some rewriting. (Also did I mention we want to use Terracotta?) Use another library that supports both reflection (like XStream) and code generation. However I'm not sure which serialization library would be best suited to the above techniques.

• error when installing mysql ruby gem on OSX 10.6.3

  So I am getting the same issue as mentioned here - http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1366746/gem-install-mysql-failure-in-snow-leopard But I haven't been able to get it fixed using the answers on this link. Here's a brief history - I had MAMP on my machine, but now I downloaded the latest MySQL from mysql.com and installed version 5.1.46 this new version runs fine and client "mysql" is able to connect and I also have XCode v3.2.1, since someone mentioned that it can cause issues. Here's the error - **Building native extensions. This could take a while... • How to use pthread_atfork() and pthread_once() to reinitialize mutexes in child processes

  We have a C++ shared library that uses ZeroC's Ice library for RPC and unless we shut down Ice's runtime, we've observed child processes hanging on random mutexes. The Ice runtime starts threads, has many internal mutexes and keeps open file descriptors to servers. Additionally, we have a few of mutexes of our own to protect our internal state. Our shared library is used by hundreds of internal applications so we don't have control over when the process calls fork(), so we need a way to safely shutdown Ice and lock our mutexes while the process forks. Reading the POSIX standard on pthread_atfork() on handling mutexes and internal state: Alternatively, some libraries might have been able to supply just a child routine that reinitializes the mutexes in the library and all associated states to some known value (for example, what it was when the image was originally executed). This approach is not possible, though, because implementations are allowed to fail *_init() and *_destroy() calls for mutexes and locks if the mutex or lock is still locked. In this case, the child routine is not able to reinitialize the mutexes and locks. On Linux, the this test C program returns EPERM from pthread_mutex_unlock() in the child pthread_atfork() handler. Linux requires adding _NP to the PTHREAD_MUTEX_ERRORCHECK macro for it to compile. This program is linked from this good thread. Given that it's technically not safe or legal to unlock or destroy a mutex in the child, I'm thinking it's better to have pointers to mutexes and then have the child make new pthread_mutex_t on the heap and leave the parent's mutexes alone, thereby having a small memory leak. The only issue is how to reinitialize the state of the library and I'm thinking of reseting a pthread_once_t. A new pthread_mutex_t is only created when the library function is invoked in the child process. This is hacky but maybe the best way of dealing with this skirting the standards. If the pthread_once_t contains a mutex then the system must have a way of initializing it from its PTHREAD_ONCE_INIT state. If it contains a pointer to a mutex allocated on the heap than it'll be forced to allocate a new one and set the address in the pthread_once_t. I'm hoping it doesn't use the address of the pthread_once_t for anything special which would defeat this. Searching comp.programming.threads group for pthread_atfork() shows a lot of good discussion and how little the POSIX standards really provides to solve this problem. There's also the issue that one should only call async-signal-safe functions from pthread_atfork() handlers, and it appears the most important one is the child handler, where only a memcpy() is done. Does this work? Is there a better way of dealing with the requirements of our shared library?

• Gparted Partition Mount Points Alternate Between 2 Physical Disk Drives

  I'm running Ubuntu Server 14.04 on a system with 2 physical disk drives. I am frequently seeing mount errors on startup. When I check the drive partitions using GPARTED, I see that my two "non-system created" data partitions have the wrong disk assignments (i.e. sda1 vs sdb1) or visa-versa. If I hand edit /etc/fstab to match GPARTED, the system will boot error free one time. On the second restart I will get the "serious mount problem" error for the 2 data partitions and when I check GPARTED, the disk assignments have changed again (again, GPARTED and fstab don't match). The fstab entries to NOT change between system restarts but the mount points in the GPARTED display do. Does anyone have a fix for this? Thanks Mr. Young and Mr Gedak, Following is my fstab file and two blkid outputs. The fstab output is correct. The first blkid output was after a reboot and is WRONG! The sda and sdb device partition data is reversed. The 2nd blkid output was after a second reboot (fstab not changed). It shows the sda and adb partition data CORRECTLY. I didn't see any duplicate UUIDs. Does anyone have any idea why the GPARTED and blkid outputs alternate on consecutive reboots? The alternating partition data is real since when the partition assignments are reversed, the boot sequence halts with disk mounting errers (I have to press "s" to skip the mounts). Thanks again. This is what I get from clicking on SHOW MORE DETAILS: "Error removing file: Read-only file system" This is what I've tried so far: delete from the downloads directory from my user. deleting permanently, but it does not work. My concern is that if I log the exception in the library, there will be many duplicates (because the library layer will log it, the application layer will log it, and anything in between), but if I don't log it in the library, it'll be hard to track down bugs. Is there a best practices for this?

• Mounting with Nautilus works but fstab gives "Host is down" error?

  I'm connecting to my university's VPN so I can connect to the network drive. The VPN seems to be working fine and I can connect to the drive by typing the address into Nautilus and entering my login details: smb://139.___.___.140/home However, this fstab entry doesn't work: //139.___.___.140/home /media/___ cifs domain=CS,username==___,password=___,uid=sai,gid=sai 0 0 Nor does manually mounting it: sudo mount -t cifs //139.___.___.140/home /media/___ -o domain=CS,username=___,password=___,uid=sai,gid=sai,user The only error it gives is: mount error(112): Host is down Refer to the mount.cifs(8) manual page (e.g. man mount.cifs) It's obvious the host isn't down since I can view the share from Nautilus. Why is Nautilus mounting it fine but not the normal mount command? What could cause this error?

  I know I've had this problem before so I'm really frustrated.   Ubuntu Core's wiki page page contains the instructions to install Ubuntu Core on a target media: Uncompress (do not unpack) rootfs Format target media: at least one partition should be ext2, ext3, or ext4 Unpack Ubuntu Core to ext{2,3,4} partition Install boot-loader Install Linux If the Linux kernel requires modules, add these to /lib/modules/$(uname -r) in the ext{2,3,4} file system Boot the target device Install any additional required software using apt-get But what are the specific commands to do the above? The things I'm specifically confused about are: Uncompressing and unpacking, what's the difference and how do I do them? What package should I install if I want the generic kernel provided in regular Ubuntu installation? I won't be installing any drivers or anything related to kernel other than what's provided in the repos, do I need to worry about manually adding kernel modules? PS I would like to request that all the commands used in the installation process be mentioned in the answer, for the benefit of ones who're completely unfamiliar and myself, should I ever forget.

• dlopen() with dependencies between libraries

  My program uses plugins, that are loaded dynamically with dlopen(). The locations of these plugins can be arbitrary, so they aren't necessarily in the library path. In some cases, one plugin needs to depend on another plugin. So if A and B are dynamic libraries, I'll first load A, then load B which uses symbols defined in A. My reading of the dlopen() documentation implies that if I specify RTLD_GLOBAL this should all work. But it doesn't. When I call dlopen() on the second library, it fails with an error saying it couldn't find the first one (which had already been loaded with dlopen()): Error loading library /usr/local/openmm/lib/plugins/libOpenMMRPMDOpenCL.dylib: dlopen(/usr/local/openmm/lib/plugins/libOpenMMRPMDOpenCL.dylib, 9): Library not loaded: libOpenMMOpenCL.dylib Referenced from: /usr/local/openmm/lib/plugins/libOpenMMRPMDOpenCL.dylib Reason: image not found How can I make this work?

• Problems running Java SWT application. Is this something to do with 64 vs 32-bit libraries?

Presumably, that should make them available on the classpath when I select the java module that contains "main" and do a "run as" application. What's the problem? I suspect it may be related to 64-bit vs 32-bit VMs....

• Ruby Rss parser and event trigger

  I'm using RSS library so i can parse Atom and RSS in Ruby and Rails and store it in a model. I've looked at the standard RSS library, but is there one library that will auto-detect that there is a new rss feed so i can update my database ? what are the best practice to trigger an instruction in order to store the new rss feed ? should i use threads to handle that problem ?is it going to be slow? thank you for your help
