• My acer aspire laptop suddenly stopped working, just a blank screen

  My acer aspire laptop suddenly stopped working while it was connected to my nokia mobile modem through usb. It stopped with power swich staying on and no response to clicking off, no irregular sound, nothing but just a blank screen. I disconnected the power and battery quickly but power switch did not respond at all and even the power indicator didn't turn on again. the display was also gone after disconecting the power and removing battery. It has no response or any sign of power while both battery and power supply are working. What do you think? A completely dead mainboard? Does the MB has any safty board or fuse that could be replaced? Any suggestion will be appreciated, Thank you.

• Two network cards in one Windows 7 PC

  Hi, I've upgraded from Vista to Windows 7. On Vista I used to run one network card (Intel 82566DC -2 Gigabit) for my internet which was connected to a Dovado USB mobile broadband router connected to a 3G modem. The IP setup on the card is set on DHCP. The second card (3com Ethernet link) was used to connect to our town's local WUG (wireless user group) and all worked fine. Now the problem I have with Windows 7 is that when I connect to the internet with the (Intel) first card, the internet work fine but as soon as I connect the second card to the wug my internet drops. If I then disconnect the first card (internet one) and try to connect to the wug it works. It seems that the two cards are fighting each other. Is there maybe something I can do to fix the problem? As you probably can gather from this post is that I am not an expert on PC's so please if you do answer do I in simple terms. :) Thanks, Martin

• CSS Rotation & IE: absolute positioning seems to break IE

  I'm trying to rotate a variety of text blocks so they are vertically oriented, and position them in very specific locations on a diagram which will be previewed and then printed. CSS rotates the text very nicely in IE, FF, even Opera. But when I try to position a rotated element, IE 7 & 8 (not worried about 6) breaks completely and the element stays in its original location. Any way around this? I really need to-the-pixel control of where these labels are located. • Best way to pan & scan images with jquery

  Hello, I am trying to make an image pan & scan system. I have a slider that zooms the image (that can be dragged) and also a small map in the corner of the image (that can also be dragged). You can see a rough example here (sorry, I am not allowed to use the design, so it's not formatted): http://lighe.madetokill.com/test/test.html My problem is that although it works great in firefox and opera, it stutters in chrome, safari and IE (it doesn't currently work in IE) at any zoom level except 100% (at 100% it's butter smooth). What is the reason for webkit's poor performance? Am I implementing this wrong? I am basically changing the margin-left and margin-top properties of the image. I know this is fast enough since at 100% it's perfectly smooth. Would I be better off using canvas? I am trying to avoid flash (or any other plugins) if possible. Also please note this is work in progress, there are other bugs except this, so do not bother with those :) Thanks in advance!

• How to efficiently merge a lot of vCard files for the same person?

  I currently have contact information at several places: old PDA's address book mobile phone's phone book (primarily name, phone number) email client's address book (primarily name, email) web mailer's address book (primarily name, email) instant messenger's contact list (primarily name, im, email, birthday) And there are several social or business networking sites on the Internet where contacts provide information about themselves, like LinkedIn or XING. All those sources can export as vCard, but as you might imagine, I get a lot of vCards for the very same contact that way. Are there any tools where I can import them and then merge them (it may ask me which phone number is more current in case of field clashes of course)? Bonus points if it can track which information I have discarded so when I re-export all information from one of the sources I can't import to (networking sites), it won't ask me again if I want to overwrite phone number of person X with the same ancient number... I hope you understand what I try to accomplish, if not just ask :-)

  Machine A is behind a firewall. I have physical access to it, but I want to log into it remotely, and I do not have access to the firewall settings. Machine B is remote, and not behind any firewall. (It's my linode) Machine C is the mobile device I'm going to attempt to ssh into A from. Is there an ssh command that I can run from machine A that connects to machine B and stays open, that will allow me to log into A from C, via B? From the manual I'd guess it would be to run the follwing on A ssh -R *:9999:localhost:22 me@B and then run this on C ssh me@B -p 9999 but the previous command reports "Connection refused."

• how to handle base tag target attribute in iphone uiwebview to open new window

  When the links are supposed to open a new window, iphone uiwebview won't trigger an event when user click these links. We had to use javascript to do some trick to the target attribute of the links. I can handle 'a' tag to open in the '_self' window with the trick without problem. But when I do it the same way with the 'base' tag. it doesn't work. I believe the base target is set by the javascript. But the base tag is in the head, which may be handled by the uiwebview before my javascript executed, so the target change may not reflected in the webkit engine. Could someone please give some suggestion, so I can open the link in the same uiwebview?   I recently upgraded a Dell Inspiron 6400 to Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit. I have a 32-bit 3D application that refuses to run, giving an error of "Failed to initialise [sic] Direct3D device". The dxdiag tool tells me: DirectDraw Acceleration: Enabled Direct3D Acceleration: Not Available However, the 64-bit version of dxdiag tells me: DirectDraw Acceleration: Enabled Direct3D: Enabled I have installed and re-installed the latest graphics drivers, as well as the DirectX 9 redistributable, but it stills fails in the same way. dxdiag reports the chipset name as the "Mobile Intel(R) 945 Express Chipset Family" with the the Chip Type as "Intel(R) GMA 950". The main driver is igdumd64.dll, version 8.15.10.1930. How can I get 32-bit Direct3D working?

• X locks up with konqueror on comics.com

  If I browse to comics.com using konqueror under KDE on Fedora 11, X will, after a delay, lock up. The mouse will move, but no keyboard input is recognized, and the screen does not react to the mouse passing over objects on screen. I am able to ssh into the machine and issue shutdown -r now and have that work. The machine is a Dell XPS M1330 with Intel Corporation Mobile GM965/GL960 Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 0c), and Fedora 11 is fully updated. Visiting the same site in Firefox does not cause a lockup. I am booting with nomodeset since it won't boot into X otherwise. I tried the other two accel options: EXA (still locks up) and XAA (X won't start). Any suggestions on how I can debug this? bugzilla

How do you call/message an emergency service (of whatever country in hope they will route the request to the correct destination) using only Internet?   Hi, I'm trying to setup a reverse proxy in lighttpd, such that all requests (and only those requests) under /mobile/video is redirected to the / directory of a secondary web server. • Invalid domains in DNS don't work on mac/*nix like systems

  At work we use domains like abc-01, which work fine on windows. Whilst developing mobile applications we already saw that this doesn't work on both iOS and android which we fixed for a few specific domains (by setting the dns up that abc-01.def.local also works in those) and was assumed to be caused by it being an invalid domain. Now however it's necessary to connect through VPN from a mac and changing all relevant domains is not an option at the moment (far too many of them and would require changing the settings of far too many applications), so I was hoping whether somebody knows a trick or setting to get this to work on mac (or even linux in general).

My sites aren't anything major just a few wallpaper websites and few other small sites, nothing real database intensive. I currently own a dedicated server and I feel like it's overkill for my network. I'm looking into getting a Virtual Private Server (VPS).   I am looking for a solution to send SMS/MMS message to mobile device from desktop or browser in LAN environment. As such, it is most probably using TCP/IP protocol to transmit request/response. The server may attach to a GSM device with SIM card attached. An server application would then start accept the request from any LAN client and convey the SMS/MMS to one or more recipients. • Can't connect to exchange thru my smart phone

  We just moved Exchange server from our company to Local data center. Everything is working except mobile access. There is no problem with receiving and sending email from outlook of my laptop, but I can’t connect to exchange server from my smart phone to receive email. While I am setting up exchange account for my phone(Google) , it recognizes when I put wrong password. But it says “Unable to open connection to server” with right password and ID. Is there any option for IP address for this service when I move my server to different location? Please, help me out for any clue.

  Hi, When you download files from Google Code now (example), in addition to the text version of the SHA1 hash, it includes a QR code of it. The device that the file was downloaded to is the one that has to hash the file. But, if it can download the file (ie, has access to the webpage), it also has access to the text version of the hash, so the QR code seems completely useless—and more work to decode when the raw text is available. How would reading the hash into a mobile phone allow you to verify the file you download to the computer? Or if you download the file to the phone, how would you use the phone to take a picture of the QR code displayed on the webpage on its own screen? Does anyone know what the point to the QR code is or how you would use it to verify the downloaded file (I don’t mean QR codes in general, but specifically in this context).

• Running complete Native Linux on phones that are bootloader-unlocked [on hold]

  Since there are many phones (HTC, Samsung, LG, Nexus) today that have bootloader unlocked, I want to ask what's preventing them from running a complete native GNU/Linux. GNU/Linux has ARM port and we can run a command line GNU/Linux on top of Android by the method of chroot. So, what's preventing for existing bootloader unlocked Android phones from running a complete GNU/Linux natively? The device should get a long shelf life if it has one such port. My few thoughts.. Proprietary drivers for hardware that cannot be made to work when using a different OS. And the binary provider will never support any OS other than what the phone is shipped with. Application Interface. The interface for desktop apps doesn't fit to the mobile display with different PPI. Kernel. Since android devices use Linux kernel whose sources should be available, could the device kernel be modified to work with GNU/Linux. And any other reasons?

• Android beginner: understanding MotionEvent actions

  I am having trouble getting my activity to return a MotionEvent.ACTION_UP. Probably a beginner's error. In LogCat, I'm only seeing the ACTION_MOVE event (which is an int value of 3). I also see the X/Y coordinates. No ACTION_DOWN and no ACTION_UP. I looked everywhere for a solution. • Use Outlook 2007 to connect to mail using active sync protocol

  Has anyone tried connected outlook(I am running v2007 on Windows 7) to a mail service using the MS Exchange Active Sync protocol? I know it is intended for mobile devices, but to me it looks like it is becoming the latest 'de facto' mail protocol for email/calendar/contact sync'ing due to the iPhone's support for it. I just think it would be an elegant solution to get my lotus notes mail in outlook(my company uses lotus notes with traveler service installed that exposes mail over the active sync protocol so I can currently read my notes mail via iPhone). This solution would probably eliminate the need for all the hacks needed to connect outlook to 'X' mail (Gmail, notes, etc) So, maybe someone out there has tried this or knows how to do it before spend time on more researching this.
