• How to set Laptop Brightness in Gnome and /proc on Thinkpad W510?

  I can set the brightness of my laptop screen already via /proc. I can read and change the value. Now I've set the value to 33 and then I went into gnome power management and enabled the option that it should reduce the backlight brightness being on battery. That works, the screen gets darker. If I now read out the current setting from /proc it still says it's 33. So I assume that there is another node in /proc to be used to control the brightness. The node I use so far is: /proc/acpi/video/VID/LCD0/brightness I'm using the nouveau driver. With the nvida driver the brightness can not be controlled.

• Server goes offline. What to look for?

  I'm using a new virtual server through GoDaddy, and this morning I received a call from the powers that be informing me our website was offline. After confirming this, I requested a power cycle through our GoDaddy control panel, and within a minute or two the server was back online. I made the call, and reported the news that we're back up. Of course, a couple minutes later we're down again. I tried connecting through PuTTy, and it takes forever to prompt me for a username, and each successive prompt takes a long time to come up. I'm using CentOS. So my questions are: How can I determine the cause? What types of things can I do to prevent this in the future? One interesting, and perhaps relevant, observation is that yesterday our bandwidth consumption was about 20% greater than our top figures from the past month.

  I'm looking for a open source report framework for statistics. A more detailed explanation is: We have a number of tests running on different servers collecting data (for example, login time) every 5min. What we need is a framework that collects this data (or exposes web services for us to push the data into the framework) and presents it in form of graphs and so on.   I just setup virtual machines on one hardware with Vagrant (this is just a test environment, not production!). I want to use a Puppet to configure them and next try to setup OpenStack. I am not sure If I am understanding how this should look at the end. • Streaming audio to headless linux box

  I have a dual boot (Win 7 + Ubuntu) PC connected via wifi with my music collection on a local HDD. I usually use Rhythmbox on Ubuntu or Winamp on Windows to listen to my music but I'll change if I have to. I also have a Raspberry Pi (low power PC running Debian) in the living room that is usually headless and connected via ethernet. The Raspberry Pi is also connected to my living room speakers via an amp. I would like to be able to stream music from my PC over the network to the linux raspberry pi. What software can I use to do this? Some sort of audio client\server?

  I know I'll get into all kinds of trouble for bringing this up on SO, but considering that nearly all of us programmers depend on the Internet to get our jobs done, I really think it's worth looking into today's failure of our right to use the Internet by way of Lobbying ISPs. Although something tells me there will be retribution for the actions of the ISPs/tel cos/cable and their lobbyist since, lets face it...ISPs/Telcos didn't invent the Internet. I'm not going to be the one to do it, but um I think somebody already has...as everybody I talked to was having Internet connection problems today at work. • Why the different coarse threaded screws?

  I'm seeing more and more of these screws (pictured below), which are almost triangular. I find I can only put them into Power Supplies and PCI(e) cards in cases, but they will break/strip away if I put them into a hard drive or a standoff for a motherboard Notice the triangular shape on it? On the Root Access chat, I started asking, but no concrete answer yet. I don't assume it's a production flaw, as I've seen hundreds and replaced them with the "proper" round screws. It is coarse-threaded, not fine-threaded (i.e. for a DVD drive or floppy drive). What are they for, and why do we need them instead of the regular round ones?

• Using VLC to Unicast High Definition Webcam over local gigabit LAN with low/zero delay

  We're setting up a webcam "window" between two offices in the same buildilng. The two PC's are connected to the same gigabit switch. We're using VLC to stream the webcam over HTTP using the following commands. vlc dshow:// :dshow-caching="0" :dshow-size="640x480" :sout=#transcode{vcodec=h264,vb=0,scale=0}:http{mux=ffmpeg{mux=flv},dst=:8080/} :no-sout-rtp-sap :no-sout-standard-sap :ttl=1 :sout-keep vlc http://192.168.0.1:8080 :http-caching="0" Even with the caching set to zero, the delay in the image is a good 2-3 seconds. The CPU usage of each pc is also maxed. I'm guessing it's the transcoding that's causing much of the delay. Can anyone give me some changes to these command lines that will reduce the transcoding power, or send the webcam over a different protocol, or anything that will reduce the delay of the cameras? Bandwidth is not an issue at all as the pc's can be connected to a dedicated switch/vlan if required.

• Black screen after scheduled resume from sleep

  I have a problem with my two Windows 7 setups at home. Whenever a scheduled task wakes up the machines from sleep, a black screen with a mouse cursor appears. If I move the mouse or press any key, desktop appears. The biggest problem is that during that black screen phase the display, sometimes even the PC too, doesn't go to stand by after a set period of time in power settings. If I get the desktop to show up, standby functions work fine. Display goes blank after a few minutes and as soon as the task doesn't need the PC, it goes back to sleep. It's frustrating that this "feature" is wasting energy and keeps lighting up the pc in the middle of the night for me to find it that way after I wake up. I found a handful of threads on the intertubes about the issue, but there were no answers in any of them. It sometimes happens in my XP machine at work as well.

  I have router Draytek Vigor 2100VG at home almost in the center of it. The farthest point at my home is my balcony, ~12m from it. I have constant wifi signal range problems with some of my devices, but not with others. Notebook Lenovo W510 - no problems Nokia Home Music - always on 10m - no problems Sony PS3 - always on 7m - no problems Sony tablet S - problems around 6m Sony PSP - problems around 8m Sony PS Vita - problems around 8m Nokia E63 - problems around 8m I'm curious why my Notebook don't have any problems even on the balcony? I guess it has better hardware or uses more power for transmission. This information is really important when you want to buy new device/computer, so my real question is: Can device wifi range can somehow be found/suggested from official hardware technical specification? If not Is there some web page with wifi range reviews?

• What service can hold CPU at lowest frequency possible when on battery load under Ubuntu?

  When I'm running on battery even with "performance" frequency scaling governor, something regularly lowers CPU speed to it's lowest value. I don't really want that, my AC strip usually in another room so I don't really need to save power. How can I find what service doing that? laptop_mode is disabled so that's not it. Update: Looks like CPU being scaled down only if it is under load. If it is more or less idle, it could stay on any frequency pretty much forever, but once it gets loaded, it quickly jumps to it's lowest frequency.   I am in a similar situation as question Can I fine-tune my screen brightness? . For me, Thinkpad T420s and Ubuntu Studio 11.10. The brightness keys work fine but the increments are too large. I have the /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0 and I can see the value of actual_brightness changing as I use the brightness keys - it changes between values 0,3,6,9,12,15. None of the listed answers for fine control works here, as follows: As the root user I can echo integers to brightness in the above folder. As an ordinary user I cannot. I do not have /usr/sbin/gnome-power-backlight-helper (because I'm using xfce perhaps?), and not sure what package it's from or if installing such a package would make sense since it's not what's currently managing the backlight. How can it be done, please?

  Is it possible to create an application for Android, which can generate a video signal (HDMI or VGA) via USB? Any Android device has miniUSB port. Theoretically it's possible to create a small commutator device on microcontroller or microscheme, which will be a USB-host for Android device. You'll connect Android device with commutator and then connect commutator with monitor. For example, the scheme looks like: Android phone - commutator (USB-host) - TV/Monitor. Summary, I need to connect android phone with TV via miniUSB port. I found soft which can use miniUSB - HDMI cable, but those apps only for Motorolla Droid and HTC Evo.   Soon I will be getting my own mini-PC (RaspberryPi / MK802 / Mele A1000 / VIA APC). But I was wondering whether is there any possibility that I can just power up and access my mini-pc's OS by connecting it to wifi/ethernet link and remotely access it over the LAN without actually needing a monitor (throughout the process?) ? I currently own a laptop and need a download box and later will be getting a HDTV for converting to a HTPC :D So, I don't really own a spare monitor now but I do have an extra keyboard and mouse. Is there exists any linux distro for the same? which I can use to directly fireup my mini-pc and hook it up across my LAN to remotely access through my laptop? • Forgot to unmount/eject external hard drive, lost moved files. Mac OS X

  So I was using my Mac with my external hard drive connected via USB. I moved about 10 GB of data to it (via drag and drop while holding down the Command key to move the files rather than to copy them). They moved to the drive all right, but as I was having some issues and the Finder crashed after the transfer, I was unable to eject the volume and later everything froze so I had to do a hard restart (hold the power button). When I remounted the volume (plugged the external hard drive back in) it no longer had any of the files which I moved onto it. As it was a lot of data, how can I recover these files?

• Windows 7 random black screen when idle

  Occasionally, when I'm away from my computer for about 5 minutes, the computer screen will go black and all USB devices (keyboard/mouse) will lose power. Attempting to move the mouse or pressing keys does not 'wake up' the computer. This only started happening a few days ago but I'm not sure what changes I did could have caused this and I uninstalled programs (one by one) I installed before it started happening, but still having the same issue. The one thing I noticed different about my computer since it started happening is i've been getting random survey popups from www.insightexpress.com. I ran Microsoft Security Essentials scan, it picked up some Java related malware, I removed it but still the same issue. I'm running MBAM right now and will run SAS after. Edit: I just updated drivers for motherboard and video card and ran virus scans, still having the same issue.

• Windows 7: from Geforce 8800 to three monitors?

  I've got a GeForce 8800 that I've quite happy with. It drives my two 23" widescreen displays well. Now I've got a 19" standard display that I want to stick between the two widescreens. My second PCIe 16x slot is unused (as is the PCI slot below that), and I want to add a card to my Win7 x64 system. This 19" display won't be used for gaming, so I don't need anything fancy. Here are two cards I was considering, but I'm wondering if they're bad choices for some reason? If they're both fine choices, which is better and why? Again, I'm needing to power only the 19" standard display with this card, and it won't play games. I just need 1280x1024 in Win7 x64. • Windows 7 Pro x64 suffering from insomnia

  My Win 7 Pro x64 is unable to enter sleep mode. Pressing the sleep button results in strange state where the computer starts entering the sleep mode, the display is turned off but then the whole process stops, it does not switch off the hdd, the keyboard still responds to numlock/capslock, but the display does not on anymore. I have to cut power and restart. If I remove everything (wireless mouse, external hdd, usb hub, etc.) it does enter sleep mode, but if there is something left, it does not, though every one of them has "Allow the computer to turn off this device..." checked and "Allow this device to wake the computer" unchecked. Why does it not work? It was working properly in the RC.

• Sony Vaio laptop constant "bi" noise when on battery

  I have sony vaio vgn fs215s laptop. When I use it with battery alone it makes a constant "bi" noise that gets louder on more power consuming tasks. Sometimes on startup the screen goes black before xp logo. Then i hear the windows startup sound but sill black screen. I bypassed the xp logo (via msconfig) and it gets me all the way ok but the noise is still there. There is no problem when the laptop is plugged to a socket. What do you think is the problem and how do i fix it (how much money)? Thanks a lot.

• what's POST code 18 / can I run an ASRock P55 Pro + Core i3 530?

  When I switch my newly built PC on, the fans start up, but I get nothing on the monitor, and the POST display on the motherboard runs quickly through various codes and then stops at code 18, which does not appear in the manual (the list there seems identical to this one). This lasts about 10 seconds, after which the machine shuts down. After a pause (also about 10 seconds) it starts up again, and this repeats until I cut the power. Interestingly, when I push the reset button, it stops at POST code 16 (which is also not listed in the manual). Does anyone have information about the meaning of those codes? Motherboard: ASRock P55 Pro CPU: Intel Core i3 530 Graphics Card: Sapphire HHD 5750 Does anyone have experience with that Motherboard/CPU combination? It says on the packaging and in the manual that it's only compatible with Core i5 and i7 (no mention of i3), but on the maker's product page, the i3 is listed as compatible as well.

  I have problem with my pc. Random reboots with post "hyper transport sync flood" error. It happens completely random. Most times i watch movie, some times when i play a game, even when i browse internet. My spec are as follow: MB ASUS M4A78-E CPU Phenom II 940 Sapphire Radeon hd4850 Vapor-X RAM OCZ DDR2 PC2-8500 kit 2x2GB PSU CM Real Power M520W CASE CM Centurion 590 Temps of MB, CPU and 4850 are in normal range. MB is hooter, around 60-70°C under load, Radeon 60-65°C under load (playing game for couple hours). CPU dos not past 50-55°C. So i think its not a cooling problem, CM case is pretty good, and have a lots of fans. I try with this memmory: TWIN2X4096-6400C5DHX same problem.

• Debian crashed, file system is read-only and cannot backup - How Do I find/mount a USB drive?

  We have a Debian server (vm's) here at work and the server crashed after a power failure. I can only boot the system in maintenance mode, and the whole file system is set to read only. I can run fsck though maintenance mode, however I would like to get a backup of some files before I do. Problem: I cannot access the net since there is no network connectivity in maintenance mode, and for some reason I try to add a USB flash drive to the computer but I can't find it through the console. Question: how to you find/mount a usb drive on Debian? I have tried several resources from the internet but nothing worked. Is there any other way I could get a backup of my files? I cannot start networking since the filesystem is set to read only. Any help would be appreciated.

• Screenflick Audio option in MacBook Pro

  When after I shut down my MacBook Pro by holding the power button for a few sec, (which I found is bad for the computer, so I will not do anymore) I found that my speaker doesn't play until I plug in and out earphone into the machine. When my speaker is not working like this, and when I am on a random webcam chatting site like chatroulette.com, they can hear the music playing on my iTunes when I choose Screenflick Audio option in the Mic setting. But when the Speaker is working back again, they don't hear the music playing even when I do Screenflick Audio mode. How can I make it work? Also, how do you make the chatting partner hear my music playing on my computer while I talk to them (not via my speaker, since it's bad quality).

• Installing Skype on Amazon EC2 instance

  For my application, I need to have Skype working on my Amazon EC2 Windows instance. I got the application installed and am able to log in, however, I can't make a phone call, since I am getting an 'Can't detect your sound card' error. Since I'm trying to inject audio from an audio file into the phone call, I don't need the sound card on the server. Thus, I need a way to bypass this error message. I have tried installing Virtual Audio Cable, which unfortunately didn't work (even though it worked on my desktop machine).

• USB-keyboard & mouse powered off in windows-7

  I have a problem with a pc where usb devices are not getting any power as soon as windows starts up (it works in preboot). This pc has no ps/2, so there is no chance for input, also not in secure boot mode. I "tidied up" using sysinternals autostart, so there is a chance I messed something up here, although I'm quite sure I only deleted some old printer drivers from autostart. I do not know how to reset this, I cant even log in because there is no input possible. I could use a linux live cd, but I don't know what to do there because there is no sysinternals from linux into a not running windows... To make things even worse, I have the windows installation completely encrypted with truecrypt, so I haven't even tried windows recovery cd yet. There is no loss of data since I can access the disc with a live-linux, I only want to use it again without resetting up everything. Any suggestions?
