  • Cannot start eventlog service

    On a windows 2k8R2 DC box the eventlog service wont start. When i try to start the service the machine returns: "Windows could not start the Windows Event Log service on Local Computer. Error 13: The data is invalid." event viewer wont open either. obviously, i dont have an event log for this error. ive already tried clearing the event logs. that didnt do anything. the other DC isnt experiencing this issue.

  • Script to set "Hide file extensions"

    I'm tired of the multi-step process to set my preferred folder options on every server to which I log on (Mostly Win2008, but also some 2012 and Win7 here and there). I'd love to be able to script the process, but unfortunately, I can't find any commands or extensions to do so for folder options. There are several settings I'd like to change, but in particular, I'd like to set "Hide file extensions for known file types" to false. I figure that if I can do that, I'll be able to manage any additional settings on my own. Methods that work on the vanilla command line would be preferred, but if there are commands in PowerShell, I'll use that.

  • win2008 R2 server core software RAID

    I am trying to set up software raid on a win2008 R2 server core. I have the disks configured as dynamic. In the server manager gui, i can see the disks, but when i right click, the option to set up "new mirrored volume" is not listed. I tried it with the command line using diskpart, and it gives the error "Virtual Disk Service Error: The size of the extent is less than the minimum." The drive are a new pair of 1Tb disks. Is this not supported in server core, or am i missing something else? Thank you

  • How to show disconnect network drives

    Windows 7 and Vista laptops in my company domain has network drives set up by Win2k8 Server GPO. Normally, when the laptops has ethernet cable plugged in before boot, the network drives connect and appear as expected at the end of startup sequence. However, when the laptop has ethernet cable unplugged, the network drives are not connected, which is fine, but the disconnected icons disappear as well. i.e. the drives are not set up. At the end of the startup sequence, upon reaching desktop, the wireless adapters will connect to the network and the laptop will be able to find the network drive. Hence I want the drives to be setup nonetheless, so that the next attempt to connect, say, via a desktop shortcut, will reestablish the network drive connection. How can this be done?

    I'm looking for a relatively simple guide to setting up an IPv6 tunnel properly. This network currently has a server (Windows Server 2008R2) running RRAS that establishes connectivity to the internet using a demand-dial PPPoE connection and handles the NAT. It also hosts a DNS server and DHCP. My ISP does not support IPv6, but I have a static IPv4 address. I've read about 6to4 and signed up at tunnelbroker.net, but quickly felt out of my depth. How do I configure my network to use it, and how I should configure my DHCP server with regards to IPv6 addresses?

  • How do you get around security warnings when redirecting AppData?

    I've recently set up folder redirection for my user profile in a domain. For now, I've redirected AppData, Desktop, Pictures, Documents and Favorites. So far, so good. But now I've noticed a quite disturbing side effect of the whole thing. Whenever I click any of my pinned elements on the task bar, I get the following warning: The shortcuts get synced as well and are no longer trusted. They're located at \\DFS\UserData\Profiles\OliverSalzburg\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch\User Pinned\TaskBar That seems like it could be a problem when rolling it out to the whole company.

  • Need to use wusa to stop endless rebooting on R2

    I installed 3 updates, which after rebooting resulted in a reboot loop, never going past the "configuring your computer for windows" stage. Last known good configuration, safe mode etc make no difference (as expected). I have no system restore images available. I used dism to uninstall one of the updates, but the other two appear to be MSP patches, and so I cannot use dism to uninstall them. From what I have been reading it appears I must use wusa, however wusa does not seem to be included in WinRE. Does anyone have a suggestion of how I can access wusa to uninstall these updates, and hopefully reverse this problem?

  • Issue about Exchange 07 SP2 Backup in SBS 08

    Hi, I'm trying to backup my Exchange 07 SP2 with the Windows Server Backup. Since it's supposed to make a exchange-aware backup with the SP2, I created a scheduled full backup of the C: (where is located my First Storage Group). The backup is successful, but when I go in Mailbox database's properties, I see that the last full backup is 2 months ago (a that time backup worked but we had some issue then). In Server Manager, Features, I checked that I have Windows Server Backup Features checked. What am I missing ? Thank you !

    I just set up an Exchange server to replace my DeskNow mail server. I want to start testing my internet mail exchange of my Exchange server. I can only set the MX records on my DNS up to my one external IP address so I was thinking that I could set up a firewall rule on my internet-facing firewall that port forwarded the smtp packets to two different servers. My question is: If I do that, will that mean that the smtp packets will be forwarded to just the first internal IP on the list? Or does it mean that the packet will be cloned and sent to both IPs?

Whenever there is a network interruption, or a server rebooted (at worst, when the server which is running all these DCSs is rebooted), I have to manually restart some or all of the Data Collector Sets. Is there a way to configure them to automatically restart, or otherwise be more resilient?

    As you can see, my two Windows Server Failover Cluster (WSFC) nodes have three network interfaces each, which connects them to three different networks : A public network A private network consisting of the WSFC nodes A private network consisting of the WSFC nodes and a machine with the WSFC Quorum Witness File Share Does this network configuration I've planned, make sense? Do I have the "right" number of NICs and networks? I'm thinking the 2nd NIC/network may be unnecessary.     I have recently been doing a lot of updates to our network drive permissions... such as consolidating direct user permissions into group permissions. The built-in ACL editor (Advanced Security Settings dialog) is adequate, but its limitations are frustrating, particularly that it cannot be resized and you cannot look at the list of existing entries at the same time as you are adding a new entry. Is there an improved ACL editor that can be downloaded to supplement the default one?

  • poor performance when deleteing many files

    I've got two machines: The first is IBM Blade with 24 cores 96GB RAM and single local hard drive with 278GB divided to 4 partitions: 1. c: - 40GB; 3GB free 2. d: - 40GB; 37GB free 3. e: - 198322GB; 198.1 free 4. 100MB (EFI system Partition) Formatted with GPT The other is pizza server with 4 cores 8GB RAM and single local hard drive with 273GB divided to 3 partitions: 1. c: - 136.81; 20GB free 2. d: - 88.74GB; 87.91 free 3. e: - 47.85GB; 46.91 free Formatted with MBR I have two scripts, the first creates 20,000 files in one directory, each file size is 192KB, the second delete the folder (recursive) and prints how much time it toke to delete all files. The problem is on the first server (blade) it takes about 2 minutes to delete all 20,000 files while on the second (pizza) it takes about 4 seconds!? Both servers have clean windows server 2008R2 with no special application running on background. Any ideas what is going on?

  • locally logged on a domain joined Win 7 = no authentication prompt so no printing

    We have problems with Win 7 PC's when the user only log on locally on (a domain joined) PC, but still use the Windows printserver. Installed printers suddently stop working and seem to appear offline. In Windows XP the (logged on locally) user would be prompted to autheticate to the domain when printing, but in Windows 7 this feature seem to be faulty or not implemented. I assume the problem is a timeout on the Kerberos ticket. Of course the user has to authenticate to install the printer from the printserver, and that works fine, but in time the authenticaton stops, and no prompt appear. Any suggestions how we can "force" a prompt to authenticate like it happened in XP?

The API uses JSON to transfer data from SQL Server to the front end. We need to move it to an internal production environment (nothing will be exposed on the public Internet) and we’re having problems - or just not understanding what needs to be done. There are two domains: The corporate domain - where all users login normally. The process domain - contains the database the Web API needs to access. The IT staff wants to put a DMZ between the two domains to house the IIS app and shield the users on the corporate domain from having access into the process domain directly. The ideal configuration is: corp domain (end users) <–> firewall (open port 80) <–> DMZ (web server running IIS) <–> firewall (open port 80 or 1433????) <–> process domain (IIS for Web API and SQL Server) We don’t really understand how to deploy our browser/Web API application in this scenario. Do we need to break up our application so that all the client code is on the IIS server in the DMZ, while the Web API gets installed on the server in the process domain? Does the entire app (client code and Web API) stay together on the IIS server in the DMZ, which then somehow accesses the SQL Server instance to get data? From the IIS server and app in the DMZ, would you simply access the Web API on the server in the process domain by going to http://server/appname/api/getitmes? In the second firewall between the DMZ and the process domain, would you have to open port 1433 or just port 80 since the Web API is a HTTP endpoint? Or, is there some better way of deployment (i.e., how ASP.NET Web API single page applications written all in HTML5 and JavaScript supposed to be deployed to production environments?)? NB: The servers are Win2k8 R2, SQL Server 2k8 R2, and IIS 7.5.

The most common types are 2 (interactive) and 3 (network). The Process Information fields indicate which account and process on the system requested the logon. I found on http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc787567(v=WS.10).aspx that the 4 means "Batch logon type is used by batch servers, where processes may be executing on behalf of a user without their direct intervention." which really doesn't shed any light on it for me. I checked the services and they are all logging in as local system or network service. Nothing for administrator. Anyone have any idea how I tell where these are coming from? I would assume this is a program that is crapping out... Thanks in advance!

  • Accessing the Local System Account to accept a software licence

    Hi All, I have a server at the moment running ColdFusion which is being used to access a windows whois program on the server. Each time I call this command via ColdFusion (using cfexecute) the command times out. I believe the issue is because the first time a user runs the .exe file they are asked to accept the licence. ColdFusion is currently set to run under the Local System account and I am just wondering if it is possible to somehow log into this account and run the program manually via the console so that I can accept the licence. I guess my only other option is to change the account ColdFusion runs under, but I would rather not do this.

  • VMware server 2.0 SYN/ACK repeating issues

    VMWare Server 2.0.0 Build 122956 I am having some issues with connecting into a guest VM (Ubuntu linux 4.4.3-4 lucid) running under VMware 2.0 on a windows server host. All connections to and from the VM's work fine, except for FTP. I thought the issue was the FTP daemon at first but it has been ruled out that it is not the daemon or the server itself. When you try to connect to the FTP server from outside of the host OS it fails with a "421 Service not available" but when you try and connect from the local VM or from the host OS the connection goes through fine. I have ran many packet sniffs using wireshark/tcpdump from the VM, the host OS, and the client connecting, the most informative is the host OS. I have attached a PNG of the relavant packets that were captured. I viewed some other network traffic that was sniffed (WWW specifically) and it seems to do the same syn/ack repeating but the user doesnt see any issues. I have disabled the firewall and the issues persisits, I have tried with specific allow rules to ensure the data is allowed and no changes. It appears like VMware attempts to do the ICMP redirect and it works, but then it vmware repeats the packets sent so you get 3 syn/ack's for every one syn from the client. Also VMWare appears to be attempting to establish an FTP connection between the HOST OS and the GUEST OS, because I see the second SYN sent from the HOST OS to the GUEST to initiate a new connection, and it get the appropriate SYN/ACK followed by an ACK, but the client never sees any of this from its end. EG. syn from client syn/ack from host OS to client syn/ack from guest OS to client syn/ack from host OS to client The same thing happens when the connection reset is attempted, RST's start being sent and repeated, the server responds with a valid header to continue the FTP handshake but the RST acknowledgement is allready issued and things are closed. I am not 100% if this is a bug in VMware or possibly a VMNetwork missconfiguration. Does anyone have any thoughts on where exactly the issue could be, things to try to verify or rule out?   • monitoring services, CPU, memory remotely on a Windows server machine

    I'm looking for a tool that is able to (remotely) monitor CPU and Memory in a Windows server but most importantly, which service/process is using it. Or-- is it possible to monitor a specific running service? We got a server that freezes on regular basis and we're trying to find the culprit without using a local debugger. Would be great if the monitoring software came with an agent that we can install on the remote clients for maximum accuracy. Any suggestions are very much appreciated.

    Hello everyone, I'm in the process of making a script to automate DFS creation and replication for an exam I have next week. So, assuming I have a namespace: dfsutil root adddom \\Foo\bar 'My namespace' And I have a link: dfsutil link add \\Foo\Bar\CoolStuff \\Server2\CoolStuff 'Neat stuff' How can I use the command line to replicate \\Server2\CoolStuff over, say, \\Server3\CoolStuff? When I use dfscmd: dfscmd /add \\Foo\Bar\CoolStuff \\Server3\CoolStuff It says it ended correctly, but opening up the MMC shows that there are no replication groups for CoolStuff. Thanks!
