can't properly shutdown ubuntu and sound problem on HP mini 311 netbook

hi, I recently bought a HP mini 311 netbook. I replaced its harddrive and installed ubuntu 10.04. Since then, I have encountered some very strange problem with its sound and shutdown/reboot. At times, when I start the computer, it will have no sound, on the GUI the sound is at max, but no sound is available. This sometimes also happen after after upgrades, hibernate, and toggling the wireless radio button. Strangely, when the sound is out the device will also refuse to be shutdown. If I shutdown the computer using the GUI, it will simply go back to the log in screen without actually shutting down. If I use "sudo shutdown 0", the computer will hang on the loading screen of the shut down process. I had to force the pc to shutdown by holding the power button down. usually (probably always) after I force a turn-off then start off again. the sound and shutdown become normal. I wonder if anyone have clues regarding to the cause of this problem. This the info about the computer: 1) installed ubuntu 10.04LTS RC, later upgraded to formal released version. 2) cat /proc/asound/version == "Advanced Linux Sound Architecture Driver Version 1.0.21." however, when doing 'alsaconf' the version displayed is 1.0.23 any help is appreciated. Having spent several hours reading about the features and limitations of services like DropBox and Jungle Disk and the hundreds of competitors they seem to have (as though everyone with an AWS account these days goes ahead and writes a file sharing application just for fun), I have yet to find one that would let a team of people at a small business collaborate without stepping all over each other's toes. At a small business there are often many small documents per project — estimates, contracts, project plans, budgets — and team members frequently have to open and edit them, with all sorts of problems happening if two people edit a file at once. Even if a sharing service is smart enough to keep both versions of the file created, most small-business software (like word processors, spreadsheets, estimating software, or billing systems) has no way to compare — much less to merge! — the changes in two rival versions of a file that two people edited at the same time without each other's knowledge. So, my question: are their cloud-based file sharing solutions that not only provide a virtual network drive that people can access, but that also let users lock files — even if it's not a real lock but just a flag or indicator — that could possibly prevent remote workers from both editing the same file at once? Having one person wait for another person to finish editing is a very, very small inconvenience compared to the hour or more than it can take to compare two estimates by hand until you find and resolve the rival changes. Given this fact, I am surprised that almost none of the popular file sharing solutions seem to recognize this problem and provide some solution! Does anyone know of a service that does?

Does a VPN requirement kill the concept of having a Web Application in the Cloud?

Recently I posted a question in SO, but so far I got no answers. I wonder if I'm asking the wrong question. This is the problem: We need to design an application which offers a public http web service, but at the same time it must consume some services through a VPN connection from other existing company. There is no other alternative but to use a VPN connection to access those services. We want to host our application in some cloud infrastructure like Heroku or Amazon EC2. But there is no direct way to access the VPN services of the other company from there. The solution I'm thinking, but I don't like is to have a different server to expose the services from that VPN. But this will require the setup of another server which I prefer to avoid. In the case this is the solution, can I use an Amazon EC2 instance to connect to a VPN? This is what I was thinking, is it correct? I don't have experience using VPNs, tunnels or those kind of networking stuff. I will really appreciate if you can propose me an alternative solution, or just give me a comment.

Migrating to AWS Cloud with auto-scaling - where to put Redis and ElasticSearch?

I've been trying to research this topic but haven't found anywhere that recommends where to install services such as Redis and ElasticSearch when migrating to a cloud framework. I'm currently running a Symfony2 application on 2 static servers - one is running MySQL and the other is the public facing web server, which also has Redis and ElasticSearch running on it. Both of these servers are virtualised, but they're static in terms of not being able to replicate at present (various aspects are still dependent on the local filesystem). The goal is to migrate to AWS and use auto-scaling to be able to spin up and kill web servers as required, but I'm not clear on what I should put on each EC2 instance. Should they be single-responsibility only? i.e. Set up individual instances for the web server(s), Redis, and ElasticSearch and most likely an RDS instance for MySQL and only set up auto-scaling on the web server(s)? I don't foresee having to scale the ElasticSearch server anytime soon as it's only driving the search functionality, but it's possible that Redis may need to be replicated at some point - but should this be done manually? I'm not sure of how this could be done automatically as each instance needs to be configured to know about it's master/slave(s) as far as I know. I'd appreciate advice on this. One more quick question while I'm here - how would I be able to deploy code changes when there are X web servers currently active? I'm using a Capifony deployment script (Symfony2 version of Capistrano), which I think can handle multiple servers easily enough by specifying an array of :domain addresses...but how can should this be handled when the number of web servers can vary?

which is best smart automatic file replication solution for cloud storage based systems.

I am looking for a solution for a project i am working on. We are developing a websystem where people can upload their files and other people can download it. (similar to rapidshare.com model) Problem is, some files can be demanded much more than other files. The scenerio is like: I have uploaded my birthday video and shared it with all of my friend, I have uploaded it to myproject.com and it was stored in one of the cluster which has 100mbit connection. Problem is, once all of my friends want to download the file, they cant download it since the bottleneck here is 100mbit which is 15MB per second, but i got 1000 friends and they can only download 15KB per second. I am not taking into account that the hdd is serving same files. My network infrastrucre is as follows: 1 gbit server(client) and connected to 4 Nodes of storage servers that have 100mbit connection. 1gbit server can handle the 1000 users traffic if one of storage node can stream more than 15MB per second to my 1gbit (client) server and visitor will stream directly from client server instead of storage nodes. I can do it by replicating the file into 2 nodes. But i dont want to replicate all files uploadded to my network since it is costing much more. So i need a cloud based system, which will push the files into replicated nodes automatically when demanded to those files are high, and when the demand is low, they will delete from other nodes and it will stay in only 1 node. I have looked to gluster and asked in their irc channel that, gluster cant do such a thing. It is only able to replicate all the files or none of the files. But i need it the cluster software to do it automatically. Any solutions ? (instead of recommending me amazon s3) S

Juju didn't configure rabbitmq for openstack?

I have installed ubuntu Openstack HA with juju with all 24 servers. But my openstack is not working at all. On dashboard on every page I get errors saying "could not retrieve usage information", "could not retrieve volume information, "could not retrieve .....etc I spent hours and have discovered that juju has not done configuration correctly. I found that on cloud controller in nova.conf juju has added rabitmq vhost enrty, but that virtual host is not added in rabbitmq. Then how is its suppose to work? And on juju-gui canvas rabbimq is all green and is working fine, which in reality its not. I am really wondering if juju has really done correct configuration in all 24 servers now, I am getting the feeling that it would have been faster if I would have done openstack deployment manually instead of using juju. Why was the virtual host entry not added in rabbitmq? How should I solve this?

Error applying iptable rules

When I try to use iptables command on one of my Rackspace cloud server, I'm getting the following error. I was trying to apply iptable rules with iptables-apply -t 120 /etc/iptables.rules and iptables-restore < /etc/iptables.rules FATAL: Could not load /lib/modules/2.6.35.4-rscloud/modules.dep: No such file or directory iptables-restore v1.4.4: iptables-restore: unable to initialize table 'filter' Error occurred at line: 2 Try `iptables-restore -h' or 'iptables-restore --help' for more information. UEC - Unable to SSH into instance, asks for password

I am attempting to set up a private cloud using Ubuntu 10.04.4 Server. I am following the tutorial at http://cssoss.wordpress.com/2010/11/26/eucabook-v1-1/ . All steps go on perfectly apart from that I am unable to SSH into the running instances. I have created the instance using a public key and try to SSH into instance using the private key. However it asks for password. I am able to ping the instance though. I have tried using both the pre-built images from the store as well as custom built images. Several people seem to have the same problem but there does not seem to be any working solution. Thanks in advance.

fastest flavor of linux for netbook / laptop

Hello, Is Ubuntu the best OS for an uber lightweight quick to boot setup for a laptop / netbook? I have a laptop and I'm just looking for the best OS for watching movies / tv shows while traveling. I'm using windows 7 right now so ideally I'd like a barebones fast linux dual booted that uses less battery etc while traveling. I'm not looking for miracles in battery savings but it would be great if I could squeeze an extra 20 minutes out of it. Any suggestions?

I only installed Ubuntu a couple of weeks ago but my friend showed me how to use aircrack.Anyways, he said that i needed to install a special driver for it and while i was trying to install it the instruction told me to uninstal the previous driver but the installation of the new driver didnt work, so now im stuck with no wireless drivers on my netbook.But, when i boot into windows it works fine,any tips? Btw,i'm using an ar2427 wireless adapter on an asus eee pc 1001pq,please reply.

Monitor won't enter power save mode

My LCD monitor won't enter power save mode. I've gone into System ? Preferences ? Screensaver, clicked Power Management, then set Put display to sleep when inactive for: to 10 minutes (for both On AC Power and On Battery Power), but the monitor still doesn't enter power save mode, even after an hour. Anyone have ideas on what to try? I'm using Ubuntu 10.04.1 LTS 64-bit desktop on a Dell Latitude E6400 laptop.

How do I get my clipboard (copy and paste) working again?

I'm running Ubuntu 9.04, and out of the blue I can no longer cut and paste, I imagine if I restart my computer I'll be able to, but thats a pain, how can I fix/reset the clipboard? Type "hello" into Text Editor Highlight the text "hello" Press CTRL-C See the text become unhighlighted (is this normal?) Press CTRL-V See the word "network" get pasted in.. perhaps that was the last thing I copied when it was still working?

What's the best Wireframing tool?

Im looking for something similar to iPlotz or Mockup. I've found Pencil Project, but it require xulrunner-1.9 (seem to be incompatible with xulrunner-1.9.2) to be run as a standalone application; However it can be used as a firefox plugin..but is a bit slower. The error on my desktop (ubuntu 10.04) is: Could not find compatible GRE between version 1.9.1 and 1.9.2.* Does anyone know other software? Edit: open-source softwares are preferred, doesnt matter if free.
