• Installing grub2 on ubuntu with software raid mirroring

  Can someone help me out on this? I accidentally installed grub on usb flash drive during ubuntu server installation. Now I cant boot system without drive attached to server. • LVM vs RAID0 vs RAID "linear" - Combine 2 disks as one, data recovery?

  Hi there, given two 2TB USB external disks that have to be combined to one 4TB volume and formatted with one big Filesystem (XFS), I have a small question to ask. Does LVM provide better Data recovery, should one disk be unplugged/damaged by being able to recover the data of the still working disk or is everything lost? I would appreciate a solution where only the data of one disk is lost and I can recover the content of the other with the usual filesystem/lvm/raid tools. Is that possible with LVM or RAID "linear"? This is for storing unimportant files that can be retrieved from backup, but I want to save time :) Thank you in advance

• Windows Recovery partition unusable after Ubuntu 12.04 install on Eee PC 1005P

  Installed Ubuntu 12.04 over the secondary (D:) partition with Grub2 handling multi-boot. Never accessed the 'Recovery' option in the boot menu until Windows7 Starter became unusable due to HDD failure (bad sectors on C:). Tried creating an USB recovery stick using the OEM's recovery application (F9) on hidden partition: all I got was a clean C:\ and an error telling me the recovery images cannot be found [R:\recovery\windowsre\ - or something very much like that] although everything is there (changed 'hidden' flag to check and copy contents). Nothing happens upon pressing F9, then Grub takes over giving the recovery option. The application starts but halts about 30s after initializing, very briefly displaying the error message above. I guess every time it goes through this it actually wipes C:\ but crashes immediately afterwards not being able to find what-ever .wim image files it needs. How to make it work?

  I am trying to run a Linux desktop and Windows desktop simultaneously with a KVM for maximum productivity. Also running three monitors. I need a KVM that can do 3x DVI @ 1920x1080 + 2x usb (mouse and keyboard) + toslink for two machines. What would you suggest? I ask on here because I have searched quite a bit and have yet to find a KVM with these requirements. (I would be open to something like modifying 3x regular KVMs to control them with one button or similar) Thanks! (I tried posting this question earlier, but it was closed as being "not related to computer hardware or software" ... is a KVM not related to computer hardware or software? • No wireless adapter in msi u200

  I have a MSi u200, and the weird thing was that I was using this normally before, then after a few minutes all of a sudden it couldn't find the wifi signal from my house. I did some troubleshooting and a bit of search in the control panel, and it seems like my hardware is missing. :( I can't even turn on the wireless light using Fn+F8, so my suspicions about the missing hardware strengthened. I tried searching for DIY fixes, but I found out that the wireless card is actually built-in deeper, unlike the RAM cards and the hard drive where you can either replace or add more cards. What do I do?? As of the moment, I can get connected to my wifi here at home using a wireless adapter via usb, and it's working. So my guess about the hardware problem seems correct. HELP!!! Thanks!

I want the user to, instead of having to click each thumbnail, also be able to click the full image itself to advance in the gallery.   I have one chance to install this in my server on site. Server that i am running is CentOS 5.6 (Dell R310, RAID1) where i need to install alsa-sound driver so that anything related to audio recording from rtsp is working (rail station/rail passing video recording including audio, where audio is not working). Unfortunately i do not have any kind of internet in that odd none human location so yum will not work for me. I need a offline way to install alsa drivers including missing dependencies if arise. • Three disk (possibly RAID) data recovery

  I have on my desk three 160 GB disks that were once part of an HP Proliant Windows 2003 Server. They may have been part of a RAID configuration of some sort. They may or may not be damaged in some way. When I interface them via USB, one of them shows up as a drive, but unformatted. The others show up as uninitialized disks in manager. An alternative explanation is that the two drives were simply not unused. What's my first step? I've recovered data off damaged drives before but never had anything to do with RAID configs. How can I even tell if any type of RAID was used?

• What are my options for a disk with what seems to be a corrupted filesystem?

  I have a friend with an old Dell that will not boot into Windows. It has an IDE drive. It spins up. I have an IDE to USB device. I've attached the drive via that device to a working laptop. The drive does not mount. If I go into Disk Management I can see the drive but it will not initalize, says "Drive not ready." I've also booted into a linux live cd to see if the drive mounts, it does not. I am just trying to recover some pictures from the drive. The data is not important enough to send to a professional. The issue is more of a curosity on how to recover data if and when these situations would occur in the future.

  I have a 500GB HDD on my desktop, and there are two partitions as C and D. The computer would not start and shows me a error message. Notice - Hard drive self monitoring system has reported that a parameter has exceeded its normal operating range. Dell recommends you that you back up your data regularly. A parameter out of range may or may not indicate a potential hard. So I took the hdd out of the desktop and made a USB external HDD. My laptop recognizes the hard drive as “I” drive and “J” drive. I am able to click “J” and see folders and files. But there is no response when I click “I” while it makes weird clicking sound. Can anyone explain why I drive doesn't work while J drive works on same physical hard drive? Is there anyway that I can fix?

• Getting the keyboard working on a MacBook under Windows XP x64

  Despite Windows XP Professional x64's unsupported status on MacBooks (model A1181), I've managed to get most of the hardware working by manually installing either the drivers on the OS X Snow Leopard CD, or finding the appropriate drivers online. However, even after installing the Apple keyboard driver from the CD, I can't get Windows to actually use the special driver. Instead, the keyboard just shows up as a generic USB keyboard, with non-functioning Fn and other special keys. Being unable to generate a right-click or Ctrl-Alt-Del makes Windows a bit of a challenge to use. I've tried: uninstalling and reinstalling the keyboard driver removing the keyboard under device manager and letting Windows re-detect it using device manager to manually update the driver How do I get the special functions of the MacBook keyboard working under XP x64?

  I sometimes get this error when resuming from hibernation: Delayed Write Failed: Windows was unable to save all the data for the file G:\$Mft. The data has been lost. This error may be caused by a failure of your computer hardware or network connection. Please try to save this file elsewhere. I know this is caused because the hard drive (G:, an external USB drive) was (a) plugged in when I hibernated and wasn't ready at wake-up, or (b) I simply forgot to plug it when resuming from hibernation. My question is: is there any way to see which particular file/folder/etc failed to be written? The hard drive functions correctly before and after, so there seems to be no permanent damage. Is there a detailed log someplace or a utility? I've searched but found nothing. Thanks for any help!

• Do I have to reinstall Mac OS in case something goes wrong during a Windows Boot Camp install?

  I have a Macbook laptop running Snow Leopard, there's absolutely no information on the laptop, just a few unimportant files on it, I wanted to use Boot Camp Assistant (version 3) to create a partition and install Windows on it to run Windows alongside Mac OS. My CD/DVD drive doesn't work at all so I'm gonna have to mount Windows on a USB stick and install it from there. My question is, when I start Boot Camp it asks me to back up my files but I have nothing to back up, I was just wondering, in case I go through with the Windows install and something goes wrong do I have to reinstall Snow Leopard? My Snow Leopard install DVD can't be read by the laptop that's why I ask, I wouldn't know what to do if I had to reinstall it.

• Can I use my old Sony Handycam TRV815 as a web cam?

  Has anyone ever used their old Sony Handycam (or maybe any older hand-held camcorder) as a web cam? As in streaming the live video from the cam to a web server (local or remote/Internet). My TRV815 has a pretty darn good picture quality for its time.. Via USB or Ethernet. It has S-Video but I think that is input. It has RCA out (white/red for audio and yellow for video) and I have used that to display to my TV. I have web cams already but was wondering if I could put this one to use also just for kicks..

  I have an external USB disk with an NTFS filesystem on it. If I remove a file from Windows and I run one of the several "undelete" utilities (say, TestDisk) I can easily recover the file (because "it's still there but it's marked as deleted"). If I remove the file from Linux (I'm using Ubuntu) no utility can recover the file (unless I use a deep-search signature-based one). Why? It looks like Linux does not just "mark it as deleted" but it wipes away some on-disk structure, is this the case?

  Note: I am aware of similar questions. The one's I seen here are for Windows, OSX, and Linux (which I do not need). I also can use Mountain Lion, which the other questions did not mention. I was going to use NTFS, but OSX Mountain Lion can only read that filesystem and not write to it for some reason. I want to use something native between OSX and Windows, as I don't want to risk losing the data over filesystem incompatibilities. I have USB 3.0 and want something that will allow files greater than 4GB. I do not mind installing a small set of drivers on the Windows machine(s), but I would strongly prefer to leave the Mac machine untouched. Thanks!

  I am trying to install ububtu on an external drive. I am a programmer who wants to start using Linux. I downloaded the usb installer from the ubuntu website and followed all the steps. But when I get to the part where I have to setup the partitioning, it says an error when moving forward "No root file system is defined". I've been doing some research and I think that I have to partition the external drive but do not know how to do so. The problem is that I only want 20gb used from that external drive and let the rest be used for storage. I am also a musician and use Pro tools so I would like to keep all my files there, but I dont want ubuntu on my main hardrive since the external one is portable. I'd appreciate it also if you could provide me the steps.

• Unable to read DVD on laptop

  I have a DVD disk that I created on an HP laptop. I believe it was setup to be accessed as a USB device. I do not have that laptop any longer and I still would like to access the files on that DVD from my current DELL laptop but it can not open the disk. My guess, the session nwas not closed on the disk and for some reason the new laptop can not read it. My question is, is there any way I can access the files using new laptop, of do I need to find similar HP to try to access the files and possibly close the session? • Left click and enter not working

  Sometimes when I turn on my homemade desktop computer (running 64-bit Windows 7), the left mouse click and enter key doesn't work. They work well in BIOS, as well as on the Windows 7 BCD and login screen. Usually, restarting the computer solves the problem. Why does this keep happening? I've tried: Using other USB ports Refreshing, repairing and reinstalling drivers Changing mouse settings Refreshing mouse profiles My keyboard is a Logitech G510, and my mouse is a Razer Lanchesis 5600. Both work without problems in Ubuntu 12.04 and Windows 8.1 Preview, and I've been using both on my 64-bit Windows 7 homemade desktop without problems for about a year and a half. • Keyboard no longer works when entering BIOS

  I am trying to boot from USB so I can install a couple different Linux distros. I can enter the BIOS, but as soon as I enter the BIOS the keyboard lights switch off (Num Lock and Caps Lock) and I cannot use the keyboard to do anything in the BIOS or even exit or restart the PC using Ctrl+Alt+Del or do anything at all with the keyboard. But as soon as I boot back into Windows, everything is fine... I've never had this problem before and some Googling hasn't helped. I've tried using a few other keyboards and simply unplugging/replugging the keyboards, but it didn't work. Is there anything I can do in Windows to maybe find out why the keyboard isn't working in the BIOS screen? In the Device Manager, all the drivers are up to date and there are no conflicts.

(the internet goes through the phone by tethering) I want to use ssh to connect to the computer (from a different computer in the same network), but I am not able to access the computer. EDIT: The changed title completely changed the question! My setup is the following: I have an android phone connected to a computer through the usb cable tethering internet from the phone, I wanted to ssh into the computer behind the android phone from another computer in the same network as the android phone. This was not possible, because the android phone creates a separate network for the connected computer, effectively shielding it from any incoming signals. It turned out to be quite simple to fix by just using iptables.

  We have a small training network with server 2003, and XP clients and users in a AD domain. A printer is connected to a client with USB. We are trying to share the printer to all the users but it's not working. We come so far as the users can see the printer when they search for it. But when they try to add it, there appears a pop up window for user name and password. No matter what user name we try it doesn't work. We have checked the shared printer's security settings and they are all in order. Everyone has printer rights. But even with full rights it doesn't work. The only ones it works for are Domain Admins. Anyone have any ideas?

• Effective system to backup this setup?

  I currently have my development environment on a usb hd. It has things like portable xampp, virtualbox with ubuntu guest, portable firefox and other dev tools. It works fantastic! I can attach it to almost any computer and all works fine. However, if this drive decides to go suicide on me I will be close behind it. The problem I'm having is I use this portable HD almost all the time and so I need a fast way to backup the entire drive. It is around 400gb. Any advice?

  I have a somehwat ancient toshiba laptop (which cant boot from a usb) that i want to install linux on (ubuntu i guess). currently running windows XP and ubuntu (via wubi). I want to delete these OSs and replace with ubuntu only. it does have a network boot option - i was wondering if the easiet way is to steup some sort of network boot server on my other computer (which has ubunutu) and get the machine to boot from it so i can install linux? i cant seem to find instructions on the 'net as to how i would go about doing this... any pointers would be most appreciated. thanks!
