    So there is this nice picture in the hash maps article on Wikipedia: Everything clear so far, except for the hash function in the middle. How can a function generate the right index from any string? Are the indexes integers in reality too? If yes, how can the function output 1 for John Smith, 2 for Lisa Smith, etc.?

  • Why does a simple ApplicationSetting PropertyBinding for a Form does not work in C#?

    My question involves this simple walkthrough shown in the article Preserve Size and Location of Windows Forms – Part I by Dennis Wallentin. This approach works 100% fine when using VB.NET. When using the same steps in C#, however, the settings within the Settings tab of the application's properties looks correct, and the app.config file looks right, but the values are not saved when you run it. Normally, I get no alert boxes. However, if I open developer tools, and pause script execution, I get a single alert that says 0. There's nothign like a good old heisenbug! A live example can be found here. The script itself is called style.js, and it is clear that images have loaded. Am I doing something stupidly, or is jQuery playing up?

  • Can GIT, Mercurial, SVN, or other version control tools work well when project tree has binary files

    Sometimes our project tree can have binary files, such as jpg, png, doc, xls, or pdf. Can GIT, Mercurial, SVN, or other tools do a good job when only part of a binary file is changed? For example, if the spec is written in .doc and it is part of the repository, then if it is 4MB, and edited 100 times but just for 1 or 2 lines, and checked in 100 times during the year, then it is 400MB. If it is 100 different .doc and .xls files, then it is 40GB... not a size that is easy to manage. I have tried GIT and Mercurial and see that they both seem to add a big size of data even when 1 line is changed in a .doc or .pdf. Is there other way inside of GIT or Mercurial or SVN that can do the job?

  • Why does Color.IsNamedColor not work when I create a color using Color.FromArgb()?

    In my app I allow the user to build a color, and then show him the name or value of the color later on. If the user picks red (full red, not red-ish), I want to show him "red". If he picks some strange color, then the hex value would be just fine. Here's sample code that demonstrates the problem: static string GetName(int r, int g, int b) { Color c = Color.FromArgb(r, g, b); // Note that specifying a = 255 doesn't make a difference if (c.IsNamedColor) { return c.Name; } else { // return hex value } } Even with very obvious colors like red IsNamedColor never returns true. Looking at the ARGB values for my color and Color.Red, I see no difference. However, calling Color.Red.GetHashCode() returns a different hash code than Color.FromArgb(255, 0, 0).GetHashCode(). How can I create a color using user specified RGB values and have the Name property come out right?

  • Why doesn't Default route work using Html.ActionLink in this case?

    I have a rather perculiar issue with routing. Coming back to routing after not having to worry about configuration for it for a year, I am using the default route and ignore route for resources: routes.IgnoreRoute("{resource}.axd/{*pathInfo}"); routes.MapRoute( "Default", // Route name "{controller}/{action}/{id}", // URL with parameters new { controller = "Home", action = "Index", id = UrlParameter.Optional }); I have a RulesController with an action for Index and Lorem and a Index.aspx, Lorem.aspx in Views Rules directory. I have an ActionLink aimed at Rules/Index on the maseter page: <li><div><%: Html.ActionLink("linkText", "Index", "Rules")%></div></li> The link is being rendered as http://localhost:12345/Rules/ and am getting a 404. When I type Index into the URL the application routes it to the action. When I change the default route action from "Index" to "Lorem", the action link is being rendered as http://localhost:12345/Rules/Index adding the Index as it's no longer on the default route and the application routes to the Index action correctly. I have used Phil Haack's Routing Debugger, but entering the url http://localhost:12345/Rules/ is causing a 404 using that too. I think I've covered all of the rookie mistakes, relevant SO questions and basic RTFMs. I'm assuming that "Rules" isn't any sort of reserved word in routing. Other than updating the Routes and debuugging them, what can I look at?

  • How much do politics/office intrigue interfere with your day to day tasks at work?

    I'm currently blessed to be employed at a location where politics are pretty much non-existant and management overhead is nearly nil. As I've only worked at this one location for my entire, lengthy career, I have very little frame of reference outside of an occasional Dilbert comic or offhand comment from others about just how bad office politics and management interference get in the way of getting your code done elsewhere. While I'm not actively looking for a new job, this one point has made me quite reluctant to even look seriously elsewhere. My question is, just how much are politics a way of life in larger companies - in or out of the game industry and how much does it affect your day to day satisfaction?

  • Linked XSD files in Visual Studio 2010 - How to work with a file in the Unauthorized Zone

    I am trying to view a 3rd Party's XSD file in Visual Studio 2010. The XSD file is stored on my local drive. It includes another XSD file, which is stored in the same folder on my local drive. Visual Studio (or perhaps the underlying .Net framework) will not process the included XSD file, because it is in an "unauthorized zone". This much is explained in the following MSDN blog. Does anybody know how I can authorize this included file, so I can see it in the beautiful new content model view?

  • How does multiple implementing multiple COM interfaces work in C++?

    I am trying to understand this example code regarding Browser Helper Objects. Inside, the author implements a single class which exposes multiple interfaces (IObjectWithSite, IDispatch). His QueryInterface function performs the following: if(riid == IID_IUnknown) *ppv = static_cast<BHO*>(this); else if(riid == IID_IObjectWithSite) *ppv = static_cast<IObjectWithSite*>(this); else if (riid == IID_IDispatch) *ppv = static_cast<IDispatch*>(this); I have learned that from a C perspective, interface pointers are just pointers to VTables. So I take it to mean that C++ is capable of returning the VTable of any implemented interface using static_cast. Does this mean that a class constructed in this way has a bunch of VTables in memory (IObjectWithSite, IDispatch, etc)? What does C++ do with the name collisions on the different interfaces (they each have a QueryInterface, AddRef and Release function), can I implement different methods for each of these?

    I'm writing a GUI program and decided to go native on all platforms. But for all the stuff i need to draw myself i would like to use the same drawing routines because font and unicode handling is so difficult and complex. Do you see any negative points in useing Pango/Cairo. Well on MacOSX i havent succeded installing Pango/Cairo yet. Looks like a bad Omen. I would also like to hear about the performance penality. The first time i looked at Pango i thought, yes thats the reason why Software is still getting despite better hardware.

I tried the following code instead but I also get an Exception. My original question was asked on Aardvark and can be read bellow: var allStudents = from s in dc.students select s; List thestudents = new List(); foreach (student s in allStudents) { if (s.courses.Contains(theCourse)) { thestudents.Add(s); } } I did a right click, "run custom tool" on my dbml and checked my names of my tables and entities. The project compiles but I get an Exception at runtime on this line: "if (s.courses.Contains(theCourse))" Any ideas? Original question on Aardvark: How do I do a LinqToSQL query that gives me this: I want to select all students that attended a certain lesson. The lesson is from a certain course. So select the course the lesson is from. Now select all the students that are following that course. There is a many-to-many relationship between the students and the courses table in my DB.   • How can I get "Copy to Output Directory" to work with Unit Tests?

    When I build a unit test project before the tests are executed the test output is copied to a TestResults folder and then the tests are executed. The issue I'm having is that not all the files in the Debug/bin directory are copied to the TestResults project. How can I get a file that is copied to the Debug/bin directory to also be copied to the TestResults folder?   • Which JavaScript or ASP.NET Charting Component/Tool/Library Will Work For This?

Hi, An interaction designer employed by the client I am currently working for produced some mock-ups, and now it is my job to determine the best way of implementing the charts included therein. After looking at the options I am aware of and was able to find doing some simple Google searches, I have narrowed it down to using either ComponentArt, Dundas Charts or Infragistics, simply because from what I can see of their demos, they have certain features I believe I will need to get things done. Here are the pictures from the mock-ups - ideally I need one piece of software that will cover all of these: This chart seems to be simple enough. Notice the arbitrary spacing between the years - not yet sure if this will be a sticking-point for the client or not. I don't know that I have ever seen a chart like this one - it combines the previous chart with some additional data. Here is the same chart, only this time illustrating what happens when a user mouses-over or clicks on an annotation within the chart. They want the nice styling within the pop-up, so the pop-up needs to be something like an iframe or similar. Any ideas or recommendations would be appreciated, I haven't used charting controls in years, so I am at a bit of a loss and the client wants an estimate soon. Thank you!

  • Has anyone gotten VB highlighting to work in Emacs23?

    I have found and installed the visual basic mode for emacs. It seems to be loading on emacs startup and the VB mode loads when I open a *.bas file. The code is not highlighted at all, however. I'm using Emacs23, tried it with 21 and saw no difference. Background for the curious: I am rewriting a set of codes from VB to Python. The syntax highlighting will make it much easier for me to see what's going on.
