• Cumulative Update 8 for SQL Server 2008 R2 is available

  Today the SQL Server Release Services team has published Cumulative Update #8 for SQL Server 2008 R2. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2534352 The build number is 10.50.1797, there are 14 fixes showing on the KB article, and this update includes the security update from last week's Patch Tuesday . • SQL Server 2008 R2 still requires a trace flag for Lock Pages in Memory

  Almost two years ago, I blogged that Lock Pages in Memory was finally available to Standard Edition customers (Enterprise Edition customers had long been deemed smart enough to not abuse this feature). In addition to applying a cumulative update (2005 SP3 CU4 or 2008 SP1 CU2), in order to take advantage of LPIM, you also had to enable trace flag 845. Build # 10.00.5861 KB Article: KB #2958696 9 public fixes Relevant for builds 10.00.5500 -> 10.00.5860 NOT for SQL Server 2008 R2 (10.50.xxxx) Once more, this is the last cumulative update for SQL Server 2008.   Earlier today, MSSQLTips posted a backup compression tip by Thomas LaRock ( blog | twitter ). In that article, Tom states: "If you are already compressing data then you will not see much benefit from backup compression." KB article: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2891666 Build # is 11.0.2420 This build has 4 fixes For most customers, this cumulative update hardly justifies the download, never mind patching and regression testing, at least IMHO.   Well, much quicker than I would have suspected, the SQL Server Release Services team has incorporated all of the fixes in 2005 SP3's CU #12 into the first CU for SP4. Thanks to Chris Wood for the heads up. • SSMS Tools Pack now supports Denali CTP1

  Earlier today, Mladen Prajdic ( blog | twitter ) released an updated version of his SSMS Tools Pack (v.1.9.4), a free add-in for Management Studio that provides a ton of helpful functionality that isn't available with the native tools. I'm really glad this happened, because I've installed Denali on all of my VMs and have been using it for most of my work, and I've been missing some of the little things the tool adds.   Fellow MVP Hugo Kornelis ( blog ) has suggested that the proprietary UPDATE FROM and DELETE FROM syntax, which has worked for several SQL Server versions, should be deprecated in favor of MERGE.   Last February, I blogged about something I was initially very happy about: a stand-alone installer for Management Studio Express (SSMSE) 2008 . Now users could allegedly download a much smaller installer, and only install the client tools without having to install an instance of SQL Server Express. While the latter is true, the former remains a pipe dream.
