  • Ruby gem installation error after OSX Yosemite and Xcode 6 installation

    - by Andres Trevino
I tried installing a gem like I did before installing Yosemite, but now I'm getting an error: /Library/Ruby/Site/2.0.0/rubygems/ext/builder.rb:159:in `synchronize': ERROR: Failed to build gem native extension. • Traveling Salesman in polynomial time

    - by Andres
Problem Description: Write a program in any language with the shortest number of characters that solves the following problem: Given a collection of cities and the cost of travel between each pair of them, find the cheapest way of visiting all of the cities and returning to your starting point. All solutions must take at most polynomial time. Input will be in the form of a text file named simply "i". The text file will contain data in the following format: city1# city2# cost$ cityA# cityB# cost$ ... Each element in the file is separated with a space, and there is a newline at the end of every line. Code count does not include whitespace. Solutions that take longer than polynomial time to find will not be accepted

  • Is it worth learning Perl 6?

    - by Andres
I have the opportunity to take a two day class on Perl 6 with the Rakudo Compiler. I don't want to start a religious war, but is it worth my time? Is there any reason to believe that Perl 6 will be practical in the real world within the next two years? Does anyone currently use it effectively? Update I took the class and learned a lot. However, after day 1, my mind was a bit overwhelmed. There are tons of cool ideas in perl 6, and it will be neat to see what filters up to other languages. Overall the experience was a positive use of my time, though I wasn't able to absorb as much on the second day. If it were a three day class it would have been unproductive just because there is a limit to how much you can process in a short amount of time.

  • "SELECT ... FOR UPDATE" not working for Hibernate and MySQL

    - by Andres Rodriguez
Hi, We have a system in which we must use pessimistic locking in one entity. We are using hibernate, so we use LockMode.UPGRADE. However, it does not lock. The tables are InnoDB We have checked that locking works correctly in the database (5.0.32), so this bug http://bugs.mysql.com/bug.php?id=18184 seems to be no problem. We have checked that datasource includes the autoCommit = false parameter. We have checked that the SQL hibernate (version 3.2) generates includes the " FOR UPDATE". Thanks,

  • Ignore SVN files when exporting a WAR file from Eclipse?

    - by Andrés Mejía
I have a Dynamic Web Project in Eclipse. I can pack it to a WAR by right-clicking the project and choosing Export WAR File. This creates the WAR file as expected and it works. The problem is that Eclipse includes all the .svn folders of the project into the WAR file. Is there a way to tell Eclipse to ignore .svn folders in the WAR exporting process? Or even better, tell it to ignore all files or folders that match some given regular expression?

  • OAuth request token for an installed application

    - by Andres
Hi all I'm trying to use/understand Google request token mechanism. I intend to use it for an application I've start to develop to access Orkut data using OpenSocial API. I read this document that explains the steps to obtain a token for an installed application. This document tells you to use the OAuthGetRequestToken method from Google OAuth API to acquire a request token . Accessing the manual of this function (available here). But the parameter oauth_consumer_key, which is required, asks for the "Domain identifying the third-party web application", but I don,t have a domain, it is an installed application. So my question is, what should I put in this parameter in that case? I'm using oauth_playground to run my tests. Thx

  • How do you clear the focus in javascript?

    - by Andres
I know this shouldn't be that hard, but I couldn't find the answer on Google. I want to execute a piece of javascript that will clear the focus from whatever element it is on without knowing ahead of time which element the focus is on. It has to work on firefox 2 as well as more modern browsers. Is there a good way to do this?

  • Should I stop redirecting after successful POST or PUT requests?

    - by Andres Jaan Tack
It seems common in the Rails community, at least, to respond to successful POST, PUT or DELETE requests by redirecting instead of returning success. For instance, if I PUT a legal change to my user profile, the idiomatic response would be a 302 Redirect to the profile page. Isn't this wrong? Shouldn't we be returning 200 OK from the request? Or a 201 Created, in the case of a POST request? Either of those, in the HTTP/1.1 Status Definitions are allowed to (or required to) include a response, anyway. I guess I'm wondering, before I go and "fix" my application, whether there is there a darn good reason why the community has gone the way of redirects instead of successful responses.

  • What device manufacturers have their own Java ME API's

    - by Andres
I know that BlackBerry and Nokia provide their own API's that go above and beyond what is specified in MIDP, CLDC, or any of the JSRs for Java ME. I am looking at a few other platforms for Java ME development and needed to know: Do Windows Mobile, LG, Samsung, ZTE, or Huawei provide their own API's for Java ME development?

  • Visual studio 2008 Professional Edition acting weird

    - by Andres
I have a weird situation on a winform project. I have user control (with 600 lines of code around) with a datagridview. I change de ColumnHeaderStyle of the font and save it. After I save the file I close it and open again, the changes were not saved (although the asterisk is dissapeared), because the ColumnHeaderStyle is back to the former value. This is driving me crazy because I cannot change any visual thing in the Designer. Any clue? Thanks in advance.

  • Why does git remember changes, but not let me stage them?

    - by Andres Jaan Tack
I have a list of modifications when I run git status, but I cannot stage them or commit them. How can I fix this? This occurred after pulling the kernelmode directory from a bare repository somewhere in one huge commit. % git status # On branch master # Changed but not updated: # (use "git add <file>..." to update what will be committed) # (use "git checkout -- <file>..." to discard changes in working directory) # # modified: kernelmode/linux-2.6.33/Documentation/IO-mapping.txt # ... $ git add . $ git status # On branch master # Changed but not updated: # (use "git add <file>..." to update what will be committed) # (use "git checkout -- <file>..." to discard changes in working directory) # # modified: kernelmode/linux-2.6.33/Documentation/IO-mapping.txt # ...

  • Create an SQL Express 2008 database in C# code, but login fails when trying to connect with a sysadm

    - by Andrés Gonzales
I have a piece of code that creates an SQL Server Express 2008 in runtime, and then tries to connect to it to execute a database initialization script in Transact-SQL. The code that creates the database is the following: private void CreateDatabase() { using (var connection = new SqlConnection( "Data Source=.\\sqlexpress;Initial Catalog=master;" + "Integrated Security=true;User Instance=True;")) { connection.Open(); using (var command = connection.CreateCommand()) { command.CommandText = "CREATE DATABASE " + m_databaseFilename + " ON PRIMARY (NAME=" + m_databaseFilename + ", FILENAME='" + this.m_basePath + m_databaseFilename + ".mdf')"; command.ExecuteNonQuery(); } } } The database is created successfully. After that, I try to connect to the database to run the initialization script, by using the following code: private void ExecuteQueryFromFile(string filename) { string queryContent = File.ReadAllText(m_filePath + filename); this.m_connectionString = string.Format( @"Server=.\SQLExpress; Integrated Security=true;Initial Catalog={0};", m_databaseFilename); using (var connection = new SqlConnection(m_connectionString)) { connection.Open(); using (var command = connection.CreateCommand()) { command.CommandText = queryContent; command.CommandTimeout = 0; command.ExecuteNonQuery(); } } } However, the connection.Open() statement fails, throwing the following exception: Cannot open database "TestData" requested by the login. The login failed. Login failed for user 'MYDOMAIN\myusername'. I am completely puzzled by this error because the account I am trying to connect with has sysadmin privileges, which should allow me to connect any database (notice that I use a connection to the master database to create the database in the first place).

  • How to inherit from a non-prototype object

    - by Andres Jaan Tack
The node-binary binary parser builds its object with the following pattern: exports.parse = function parse (buffer) { var self = {...} self.tap = function (cb) {...}; self.into = function (key, cb) {...}; ... return self; }; How do I inherit my own, enlightened parser from this? Is this pattern designed intentionally to make inheritance awkward? My only successful attempt thus far at inheriting all the methods of binary.parse(<something>) is to use _.extend as: var clever_parser = function(buffer) { if (this instanceof clever_parser) { this.parser = binary.parse(buffer); // I guess this is super.constructor(...) _.extend(this.parser, this); // Really? return this.parser; } else { return new clever_parser(buffer); } } This has failed my smell test, and that of others. Is there anything about this that makes in tangerous?

  • Should I use Drupal or Kohana-type framework for a web "application"

    - by Andres
The debate is that I need a PHP Framework/Drupal with the flexibility to add custom features to a potentially large application (web and with an api). However, with a framework, like Kohana, I see myself tackling and re-inventing the wheel with the simple stuff like account management and cms stuff. Account management and quick data collection, like fast form creation, are tedious in Kohana but appear incredible simple in Drupal. On the other hand, based on my limited Drupal experience, I doubt building rapid custom "features" and allowing users to create "groups" and to manage their own roles within those groups is something Drupal can easily accomplish. To simplify, is Drupal capable of true Web Applications; where the application is a service and provides custom results to each user? Can it provide a dashboard-like interface for users to change their settings or preferences? Can it aggregate data from particular users to provide better results/info to others? If so, please point me to some knowledge :-)

  • asp.net menu control css for child items

    - by Andres
    I have an asp.net menu control which the child items(submenu) width is tied to its parent's width, I was wondering is there a work around? because some of the titles for the submenu are longer than the title of the parent so it looks all smooshed together and just horrible on the eyes. Any help is much appreciated. :) .net control: <asp:Menu ID="navigation" runat="server" Orientation="Horizontal" CssClass="topmenu" MaximumDynamicDisplayLevels="20" IncludeStyleBlock="false"> <DynamicSelectedStyle /> <DynamicMenuItemStyle /> <DynamicHoverStyle /> <DynamicMenuStyle /> <StaticMenuItemStyle /> <StaticSelectedStyle /> <StaticHoverStyle /> </asp:Menu> html rendered: <div class="topmenu" id="navigation"> <ul class="level1"> <li><a class="popout level1" href="dashboard.aspx?option=1">Seguridad</a> <ul class="level2"> <li><a class="level2" href="security/users.aspx?option=15">Usuarios</a></li> <li><a class="level2" href="security/profiles.aspx?option=16">Perfiles</a></li> <li><a class="level2" href="security/options.aspx?option=17">Opciones</a></li> <li><a class="level2" href="security/actions.aspx?option=18">Acciones</a></li> </ul> </li> </ul> </div> css: div.topmenu{} div.topmenu ul { list-style:none; padding:5px 0; margin:0; background: #0b2e56; } div.topmenu ul li { float:left; padding:10px; color: #fff; height:16px; z-index:9999; margin:0; } div.topmenu ul li a, div.menu ul li a:visited{ color: #fff; } div.topmenu ul li a:hover{ color:#fff; } div.topmenu ul li a:active{color:#fff; } thats what I have and the styling works i just need help in getting submenus to expand if they are bigger than main title. Thanks in advance!

  • Custom Detail in Linq-to-SQL Master-Detail DataGridViews

    - by Andres
Hi, looking for a way to create Linq-to-SQL Master-Detail WinForms DataGridViews where the Detail part of the Linq query is a custom one. Can do fine this: DataClasses1DataContext db = new DataClasses1DataContext(".\\SQLExpress"); var myQuery = from o in db.Orders select o; dataGridView1.DataSource = new BindingSource() { DataSource = myQuery }; dataGridView2.DataSource = new BindingSource() { DataSource = dataGridView1.DataSource, DataMember = "OrderDetails" }; but I'd like to have the Detail part under my precise control, like var myQuery = from o in db.Orders join od in db.OrderDetails on o.ID equals od.OrderID into MyOwnSubQuery select o; and use it for the second grid: dataGridView2.DataSource = new BindingSource() { DataSource = dataGridView1.DataSource, DataMember = "MyOwnSubQuery" // not working... }; the real reason I want it is a bit more complex (I'd like to have the Detail part to be some not-pre-defined join actually), but I'm hoping the above conveyed the idea. Can I only have the Detail part as a plain sub-table coming out of the pre-defined relation or can I do more complex stuff with the Detail part? Does anyone else feel this is kind of limited (if the first example is the best we can do)? Thanks!

  • Memory Allocation - Arduino

    - by Joey Arnold Andres
I'm new to this low level stuff. I'm currently learning arduino. I'm currently using an Arduino Mega 2560 and in our course we are practicing memory management. I'm a pro at memory management in pc but somehow I'm having crazy problems here in arduino. For instance: The arduino have 8192B, I'm trying to overflow it with uint_16 so I made an array of 8192/16 which is 512. so I did uint16_t A[512+1]; Well I expected that to cause an overflow. What is wrong with my concept?

  • Why are gettimeofday() intervals occasionally negative?

    - by Andres Jaan Tack
I have an experimental library whose performance I'm trying to measure. To do this, I've written the following: struct timeval begin; gettimeofday(&begin, NULL); { // Experiment! } struct timeval end; gettimeofday(&end, NULL); // Print the time it took! std::cout << "Time: " << 100000 * (end.tv_sec - begin.tv_sec) + (end.tv_usec - begin.tv_usec) << std::endl; Occasionally, my results include negative timings, some of which are nonsensical. For instance: Time: 226762 Time: 220222 Time: 210883 Time: -688976 What's going on?

  • EntityFramework WCF issue

    - by Andres Blanco
Right now i'm doing some tests involving entityFramework and WCF. As I understand, the EntityObjects generated are DataContracts and so, they can be serialized to the client. In my example I have a "Country" entity wich has 1 "Currency" as a property, when I get a Country and try to send it to the client, it throws an exception saying the data cant be written. But, the thing is, if I Get a Currency (which has a collection of Countries) and dont load its countries, it does work. The client gets all the entities. So, as a summary: - I have an entity with another entity as a property and cant be serialized. - I have another entity with an empty list of properties and it is successfully serialized. Any ideas on how to make it work?
