• Repairing or recreating a bootloader on a multi-booting EFI GPT system

  Reinstalling Ubuntu messed up my boot loader so I I tried to fix it with boot repair. It detected my OSX installation and asked about removing the "separate boot/EFI". It also said my partition was full despite the fact that it wasn't and asked me to remove stuff. I declined both and proceeded. It's been stuck at the "purge and reinstall the GRUB" stage for half an hour. Is this typical, bearing in mind I have a fast SSD and CPU? Is there a better way to re-install grub on a multi-booting UEFI system? Does my pastebin provide any insight?

• What's the proper response to WM_ENDSESSION with ENDSESSION_CLOSEAPP and wParam == FALSE?

  According to the WM_ENDESSION docs, when lParam is ENDSESSION_CLOSEAPP and wParam is FALSE, "the application should not shut down". So, should I just ignore that and use the default response? What is it's purpose? (I'm listening to Windows events/messages in Qt (C++) to shutdown some launched processes, but that's just the context and shouldn't have any bearing here...)

• PHP next MySQL row - how to move pointer until function checks true?

  I have a PHP script which takes a value from a row in my MySQL database, runs it through a function, and if it determines it's true returns one value, and if it's false, it needs to go to the next value in the database and check that one until eventually one returns true. I think I need to use mysql_fetch_assoc, but I'm not really sure in what way to use it... I wish I could post my code to be more specific, but it's a lot of code and most of it has no bearing on this issue...

  For a back office application which is going to be used in house and users trained to use it, does it make sense to have browser side validation. After training users will seldom make mistakes. These mistakes would get caught at the server side. Also bearing in mind that the bandwidth availability is a lesser concern I feel we should avoid browser side validations. This will save the effort of maintaining the same functionality at two places.

• Looking for a simple alternative to Thread.Sleep

  HI, During the development of my app, I was using Thread.Sleep to give our external devices some time to adjust to settings before making queries, as they are quite old and slow. I now want to replace these with something a bit more stylish and correct. To do this though, I need to synchronize reading/writing so that a race condition is never met.   I have content on subdomain1.mydomain.com which can't reside on mydomain.com/subdomain1. Nevertheless, all my other content resides in folders of the mydomain.com/subdomain* type. • Is there a standard Mac OS X Snow Leopard home folder naming convention?

  I recently re-installed a fresh copy of Snow Leopard on my Mac. I was a bit surprised when the process completed it had changed the name of my home folder to use my name rather than my initials. This messed up all the paths in my Eclipse IDE workspace. I vaguely remember being asked if I use it for home or business use and wondered if something I did there has a bearing on the way the default name is assigned. • Concurrent backups in SQL Server?

  We currently have our backups managed by a third party company. There are a bunch of agent jobs created that take full backups (4 times a day) and transaction log backups (4 times an hour). We now want to manage our backups in house, but don't want to disable the third party's jobs until we are sure that we have everything configured correctly internally So I am proposing to have a short period (say, a couple of days) where backups are being taken both by the old and the new system. I am wondering what the ramifications of having these two different systems both manage backups, and the potential pitfalls of having backups taken simultaneously. Is this even supported? If so, and bearing in mind that the system can cope with one backup without any noticeable performance degradation, is it fairly logical to assume that it should be able to cope with two simultaneous backups? Currently the load on the server is fairly light and it rarely struggles. Any advice is appreciated

• Why does installing NVidia 9600GT graphics card, take 1GB of RAM away from Windows?

  Hi, I've changed graphics cards in my PC and now Windows 7 (32bit) is reporting that I have a whole gigabyte less physical RAM in my PC. Why is this? Firstly, the machine has 4GB of physical RAM. The old card was an ATI 2600XT with 256MB and the new card is an NVidia 9600GT with 512MB. With the ATI card windows sees 3326MB. With the NVidia card, windows sees 2558MB. I realise that due to address space restrictions I will not see all 4GB with 32bit windows, but why is there such a massive loss of RAM when simply changing cards (bearing in mind BOTH cards have their own RAM and borrow no main memory like some built on chipsets do). Would using 64 bit windows solve this? Thanks Nick.

• OEM Office 2010 without media - how to reinstall?

  I have recently purchased a new office desktop PC from Dell with OEM version of Windows 7 Pro and Office 2010 Pro. One of the reasons I always use Dell is that they always supply installation media CDs or DVDs, unlike some other companies that just give you ISO images on the hard disk that you have to burn yourself. This is the first PC I have purchased with Office 2010 Pro (OEM), and I was disappointed to see that Dell don't ship out any installation media for office 2010, they just supply a piece of card with the office pro product key printed on it. If the HDD fails completely and I have to perform a clean installation, how can I re-install office? Can I download the trial version of Office 2010 and install that, then offer it my product key? Bearing in mind that the product key is an OEM product, not a retail product, would this work?

• Why are default spamassassin rules not being applied to emails we generate?

  My company uses a standalone spam-assassin install to test marketing emails, however, mail originating from us does not seem to run the full gamut of test. For example, Spam assassin has a default rule that flags messages that contain the phrase Dear [Something], and it properly flags spam that I feed it.It does not, however, apply that same rule to in house email I send it. Is it possible that spam assassin has white-listed us somehow, perhaps because the mail originates in the same domain as the server or receiver? I believe most of the recent spamassassin questions have been mine, so thanks for bearing with me as I figure this out! Additional requirements: Use with mdadm Software RAID 5 (can be on separate disks) that multiple instances with access Paravirtualized Ubuntu Server guests instances Possible ideas for now: Ubuntu host (dom0) with ubuntu-xen-server package (this purportedly isn't supported) dom0 host will "own" RAID 5 partition More Ubuntu servers as guests Citrix XenServer bare-metal host XenServer will own RAID Citrix XenServer bare-metal host Ubuntu guest instance creates and owns RAID Questions and concerns: Can Ubuntu be used as a dom0 Xen host? • Transfer Raid Drives to External Enclosure

  I have 2 raid disks (a grand total of 360GB) in my laptop. I'm fast running out of space and want to install new drives. I've a pretty good idea how to do this. My question is what can I do with the drives that I remove? • How can I share files from my Windows 7 machine to my friend's Ubuntu machine?

  I run a Windows 7 Pro SP1 laptop as my home machine, and my housemate runs an Ubuntu 12.04.1.05 desktop. We share a WLAN. I would like to make certain locations and files available for him to read and maybe write. How can I go about this? Bearing in mind I have very little recent experience with modern Linux, and Ubuntu in particular. My first idea is to share a Windows folder with my Ubuntu VM under VMWare Player, then his Ubuntu machine can connect to my Unbuntu VM, and the two can use whatever magic Ubuntu uses to achieve file sharing. This requires my Ubuntu VM to be always running though, and that may not always be possible. I have also heard that Samba may have a feature to help here, but I know nothing about that. How can I share my Windows files with my mate's Ubuntu machine, preferably with a 1 to 1 connection, i.e. rather not using shim VM's

• Remote Access using Windows 7 Home Premium

  I'm hoping to try and do some trans-atlantic tech support for my in-laws. Both my machine and theirs are running Windows 7 Home Premium. I read in this HowToGeek article that the Home editions of Windows 7 and Vista don't support remote access. What's the most straightforward way for me to access their machine - bearing in mind that they are a retired couple and this is their first computer and therefore anything that needs to happen at their end needs to be super simple. Free would be prefered but if there is a good paid for solution I'd consider it.
