  • Why my application ask for a codec to pla the MVI(.MOV) video files while i can play them on WMP and QuickTime?

    - by Daniel Lip
I have an application i did some time ago when im loading the video file its ok when trying to play/use the file im getting the messageBox message say that its need a codec to use gspot or search the internet. Wehn im playing this files on my hard disk with Windows Media Play or either QuickTime there is no problems. The Video files for example name are: MVI_2483 in the file name properties i see its type: Quick Time Movie (.MOV) In my application im using DirectShowLib-2005.dll this is the class im using in my case to extract the video file im using it in my application to extract only lightnings from the video file name. In Form1 i have a button click event that just starting the action: private void button8_Click(object sender, EventArgs e) { viewToolStripMenuItem.Enabled = false; fileToolStripMenuItem.Enabled = false; button2.Enabled = false; label14.Visible = false; label15.Visible = false; label21.Visible = false; label22.Visible = false; label24.Visible = false; label25.Visible = false; ExtractAutomatic = true; DirectoryInfo info = new DirectoryInfo(_videoFile); string dirName = info.Name; automaticModeDirectory = dirName + "_Automatic"; subDirectoryName = _outputDir + "\\" + automaticModeDirectory; if (secondPass == true) { Start(true); } Start(false); } This is the function start in Form1: private void Start(bool secondpass) { setpicture(-1); if (Directory.Exists(_outputDir) && secondpass == false) { } else { Directory.CreateDirectory(_outputDir); } if (ExtractAutomatic == true) { string subDirectory_Automatic_Name = _outputDir + "\\" + automaticModeDirectory; Directory.CreateDirectory(subDirectory_Automatic_Name); f = new WmvAdapter(_videoFile, Path.Combine(subDirectory_Automatic_Name)); } else { string subDirectory_Manual_Name; if (Directory.Exists(subDirectoryName)) { subDirectory_Manual_Name = subDirectoryName; f = new WmvAdapter(_videoFile, Path.Combine(subDirectory_Manual_Name)); } else { subDirectory_Manual_Name = _outputDir + "\\" + averagesListTextFileDirectory + "_Manual"; Directory.CreateDirectory(subDirectory_Manual_Name); f = new WmvAdapter(_videoFile, Path.Combine(subDirectory_Manual_Name)); } } button1.Enabled = false; f.Secondpass = secondpass; f.FramesToSave = _fts; f.FrameCountAvailable += new WmvAdapter.FrameCountEventHandler(f_FrameCountAvailable); f.StatusChanged += new WmvAdapter.EventHandler(f_StatusChanged); f.ProgressChanged += new WmvAdapter.ProgressEventHandler(f_ProgressChanged); this.Text = "Processing Please Wait..."; label5.ForeColor = Color.Green; label5.Text = "Processing Please Wait"; button8.Enabled = false; button5.Enabled = false; label5.Visible = true; pictureBox1.Image = Lightnings_Extractor.Properties.Resources.Weather_Michmoret; Hrs = 0; //number of hours Min = 0; //number of Minutes Sec = 0; //number of Sec timeElapsed = 0; label10.Text = "00:00:00"; label11.Visible = false; label12.Visible = false; label9.Visible = false; label8.Visible = false; this.button1.Enabled = false; myTrackPanelss1.trackBar1.Enabled = false; this.checkBox2.Enabled = false; this.checkBox1.Enabled = false; numericUpDown1.Enabled = false; timer1.Start(); label2.Text = ""; label1.Visible = true; label2.Visible = true; label3.Visible = true; label4.Visible = true; f.Start(); } And this is the class wich is not my oqn class i just just defined it in some places wich making the problem: using System; using System.Diagnostics; using System.Drawing; using System.Drawing.Imaging; using System.IO; using System.Runtime.InteropServices; using DirectShowLib; using System.Collections.Generic; using Extracting_Frames; using System.Windows.Forms; namespace Polkan.DataSource { internal class WmvAdapter : ISampleGrabberCB, IDisposable { #region Fields_Properties_and_Events bool dis = false; int count = 0; const string fileName = @"d:\histogramValues.dat"; private IFilterGraph2 _filterGraph; private IMediaControl _mediaCtrl; private IMediaEvent _mediaEvent; private int _width; private int _height; private readonly string _outFolder; private int _frameId; //better use a custom EventHandler that passes the results of the action to the subscriber. public delegate void EventHandler(object sender, EventArgs e); public event EventHandler StatusChanged; public delegate void FrameCountEventHandler(object sender, FrameCountEventArgs e); public event FrameCountEventHandler FrameCountAvailable; public delegate void ProgressEventHandler(object sender, ProgressEventArgs e); public event ProgressEventHandler ProgressChanged; private IMediaSeeking _mSeek; private long _duration = 0; private long _avgFrameTime = 0; //just save the averages to a List (not to fs) public List<double> AveragesList { get; set; } public List<long> histogramValuesList; public bool Secondpass { get; set; } public List<int> FramesToSave { get; set; } #endregion #region Constructors and Destructors public WmvAdapter(string file, string outFolder) { _outFolder = outFolder; try { SetupGraph(file); } catch { Dispose(); MessageBox.Show("A codec is required to load this video file. • Problem writing HTML content to Word document in ASP.NET

    - by saran
    I am trying to export the HTML page contents to Word. My Html display page is: What is your favourite color? NA List the top three school ? one National two Devs three PS And a button for click event. The button click event will open MS word and paste the page contents in word. The word page contains the table property of html design page. It occurs only in Word 2003. But in word 2007 the word document contains the text with out table property. How can I remove this table property in word 2003. I am not able to add the snapshots. Else i will make you clear. I am designing the web page by aspx. I am exporting the web page content by the following code. protected void Button1_Click(object sender, EventArgs e) { Response.ContentEncoding = System.Text.Encoding.UTF7; System.Text.StringBuilder SB = new System.Text.StringBuilder(); System.IO.StringWriter SW = new System.IO.StringWriter(); System.Web.UI.HtmlTextWriter htmlTW = new System.Web.UI.HtmlTextWriter(SW); tbl.RenderControl(htmlTW); string strBody = "<html>" + "<body>" + "<div><b>" + htmlTW.InnerWriter.ToString() + "</b></div>" + "</body>" + "</html>"; Response.AppendHeader("Content-Type", "application/msword"); Response.AppendHeader("Content-disposition", "attachment; filename=" + fileName); Response.ContentEncoding = System.Text.Encoding.UTF7; string fileName1 = "C://Temp/Excel" + DateTime.Now.Millisecond.ToString(); BinaryWriter writer = new BinaryWriter(File.Open(fileName1, FileMode.Create)); writer.Write(strBody); writer.Close(); FileStream fs = new FileStream(fileName1, FileMode.Open, FileAccess.Read); byte[] renderedBytes; // Create a byte array of file stream length renderedBytes = new byte[fs.Length]; //Read block of bytes from stream into the byte array fs.Read(renderedBytes, 0, System.Convert.ToInt32(fs.Length)); //Close the File Stream fs.Close(); FileInfo TheFile = new FileInfo(fileName1); if (TheFile.Exists) { File.Delete(fileName1); } Response.BinaryWrite(renderedBytes); Response.Flush(); Response.End(); }

  • Feedback on Optimizing C# NET Code Block

    - by Brett Powell
I just spent quite a few hours reading up on TCP servers and my desired protocol I was trying to implement, and finally got everything working great. I noticed the code looks like absolute bollocks (is the the correct usage? Im not a brit) and would like some feedback on optimizing it, mostly for reuse and readability. The packet formats are always int, int, int, string, string. try { BinaryReader reader = new BinaryReader(clientStream); int packetsize = reader.ReadInt32(); int requestid = reader.ReadInt32(); int serverdata = reader.ReadInt32(); Console.WriteLine("Packet Size: {0} RequestID: {1} ServerData: {2}", packetsize, requestid, serverdata); List<byte> str = new List<byte>(); byte nextByte = reader.ReadByte(); while (nextByte != 0) { str.Add(nextByte); nextByte = reader.ReadByte(); } // Password Sent to be Authenticated string string1 = Encoding.UTF8.GetString(str.ToArray()); str.Clear(); nextByte = reader.ReadByte(); while (nextByte != 0) { str.Add(nextByte); nextByte = reader.ReadByte(); } // NULL string string string2 = Encoding.UTF8.GetString(str.ToArray()); Console.WriteLine("String1: {0} String2: {1}", string1, string2); // Reply to Authentication Request MemoryStream stream = new MemoryStream(); BinaryWriter writer = new BinaryWriter(stream); writer.Write((int)(1)); // Packet Size writer.Write((int)(requestid)); // Mirror RequestID if Authenticated, -1 if Failed byte[] buffer = stream.ToArray(); clientStream.Write(buffer, 0, buffer.Length); clientStream.Flush(); } I am going to be dealing with other packet types as well that are formatted the same (int/int/int/str/str), but different values. I could probably create a packet class, but this is a bit outside my scope of knowledge for how to apply it to this scenario. If it makes any difference, this is the Protocol I am implementing. http://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/Source_RCON_Protocol

  • Write string to fixed-length byte array in C#

    - by toasteroven
somehow couldn't find this with a google search, but I feel like it has to be simple...I need to convert a string to a fixed-length byte array, e.g. write "asdf" to a byte[20] array. the data is being sent over the network to a c++ app that expects a fixed-length field, and it works fine if I use a BinaryWriter and write the characters one by one, and pad it by writing '\0' an appropriate number of times. is there a more appropriate way to do this?

  • C# Read Byte [] to Image

    - by LucasGuitar
    I have an application which I'm adding pictures and these are automatically converted to binary and stored in a single file. how can I save several images, I keep in an XML file start and size of each set of refente to an image byte. But it has several images in bytes, whenever I try to select a different set of bytes just opening the same image. I would like your help to be able to fix this and open different images. Code //Add Image private void btAddImage_Click(object sender, RoutedEventArgs e) { OpenFileDialog op = new OpenFileDialog(); op.Title = "Selecione a Imagem"; op.Filter = "All supported graphics|*.jpg;*.jpeg;*.png|" + "JPEG (*.jpg;*.jpeg)|*.jpg;*.jpeg|" + "Portable Network Graphic (*.png)|*.png"; if (op.ShowDialog() == true) { imgPatch.Source = new BitmapImage(new Uri(op.FileName)); txtName.Focus(); } } //Convert Image private void btConvertImage_Click(object sender, RoutedEventArgs e) { if (String.IsNullOrEmpty(txtName.Text)) { txtName.Focus(); MessageBox.Show("Preencha o Nome", "Error"); } else { save(ConvertFileToByteArray(op.FileName), txtName.Text); } } //Image to Byte Array private static byte[] ConvertFileToByteArray(String FilePath) { return File.ReadAllBytes(FilePath); } //Save Binary File and XML File public void save(byte[] img, string nome) { FileStream f; long ini, fin = img.Length; if (!File.Exists("Escudos.bcf")) { f = new FileStream("Escudos.bcf", FileMode.Create); ini = 0; } else { f = new FileStream("Escudos.bcf", FileMode.Append); ini = f.Length + 1; bin = new TestBinarySegment(); } bin.LoadAddSave("Escudos.xml", "Brasileiro", nome, ini, fin); BinaryWriter b = new BinaryWriter(f); b.Write(img); b.Close(); f.Dispose(); } //Load Image from Byte private void btLoad_Click(object sender, RoutedEventArgs e) { getImageFromByte(); } //Byte to Image public void getImageFromByte(int start, int length) { using (FileStream fs = new FileStream("Escudos.bcf", FileMode.Open)) { byte[] iba = new byte[fs.Length+1]; fs.Read(iba, start, length); Image image = new Image(); image.Source = BitmapFrame.Create(fs, BitmapCreateOptions.None, BitmapCacheOption.OnLoad); imgPatch2.Source = image.Source; } }

  • How to do a non-waiting write on a named pipe (c#) ?

    - by Jelly Amma
Hello, I'm using .net 3.5 named pipes and my server side is : serverPipeStream = new NamedPipeServerStream("myPipe", PipeDirection.InOut, 1, PipeTransmissionMode.Byte, PipeOptions.Asynchronous); When I write some data with, say, BinaryWriter, the write() call itself doesn't return until the client side has called a read() on its NamedPipeClientStream. How can I make my write() to the named pipe non-blocking ? Thanks in advance for any help.

  • Jumbled byte array after using TcpClient and TcpListener

    - by Dylan
I want to use the TcpClient and TcpListener to send an mp3 file over a network. I implemented a solution of this using sockets, but there were some issues so I am investigating a new/better way to send a file. I create a byte array which looks like this: length_of_filename|filename|file This should then be transmitted using the above mentioned classes, yet on the server side the byte array I read is completely messed up and I'm not sure why. The method I use to send: public static void Send(String filePath) { try { IPEndPoint endPoint = new IPEndPoint(Settings.IpAddress, Settings.Port + 1); Byte[] fileData = File.ReadAllBytes(filePath); FileInfo fi = new FileInfo(filePath); List<byte> dataToSend = new List<byte>(); dataToSend.AddRange(BitConverter.GetBytes(Encoding.Unicode.GetByteCount(fi.Name))); // length of filename dataToSend.AddRange(Encoding.Unicode.GetBytes(fi.Name)); // filename dataToSend.AddRange(fileData); // file binary data using (TcpClient client = new TcpClient()) { client.Connect(Settings.IpAddress, Settings.Port + 1); // Get a client stream for reading and writing. using (NetworkStream stream = client.GetStream()) { // server is ready stream.Write(dataToSend.ToArray(), 0, dataToSend.ToArray().Length); } } } catch (ArgumentNullException e) { Debug.WriteLine(e); } catch (SocketException e) { Debug.WriteLine(e); } } } Then on the server side it looks as follows: private void Listen() { TcpListener server = null; try { // Setup the TcpListener Int32 port = Settings.Port + 1; IPAddress localAddr = IPAddress.Parse("127.0.0.1"); // TcpListener server = new TcpListener(port); server = new TcpListener(localAddr, port); // Start listening for client requests. server.Start(); // Buffer for reading data Byte[] bytes = new Byte[1024]; List<byte> data; // Enter the listening loop. while (true) { Debug.WriteLine("Waiting for a connection... "); string filePath = string.Empty; // Perform a blocking call to accept requests. // You could also user server.AcceptSocket() here. using (TcpClient client = server.AcceptTcpClient()) { Debug.WriteLine("Connected to client!"); data = new List<byte>(); // Get a stream object for reading and writing using (NetworkStream stream = client.GetStream()) { // Loop to receive all the data sent by the client. while ((stream.Read(bytes, 0, bytes.Length)) != 0) { data.AddRange(bytes); } } } int fileNameLength = BitConverter.ToInt32(data.ToArray(), 0); filePath = Encoding.Unicode.GetString(data.ToArray(), 4, fileNameLength); var binary = data.GetRange(4 + fileNameLength, data.Count - 4 - fileNameLength); Debug.WriteLine("File successfully downloaded!"); // write it to disk using (BinaryWriter writer = new BinaryWriter(File.Open(filePath, FileMode.Append))) { writer.Write(binary.ToArray(), 0, binary.Count); } } } catch (Exception ex) { Debug.WriteLine(ex); } finally { // Stop listening for new clients. server.Stop(); } } Can anyone see something that I am missing/doing wrong?

  • ILMerge - Unresolved assembly reference not allowed: System.Core

    - by Steve Michelotti
ILMerge is a utility which allows you the merge multiple .NET assemblies into a single binary assembly more for convenient distribution. Recently we ran into problems when attempting to use ILMerge on a .NET 4 project. We received the error message: An exception occurred during merging: Unresolved assembly reference not allowed: System.Core.     at System.Compiler.Ir2md.GetAssemblyRefIndex(AssemblyNode assembly)     at System.Compiler.Ir2md.GetTypeRefIndex(TypeNode type)     at System.Compiler.Ir2md.VisitReferencedType(TypeNode type)     at System.Compiler.Ir2md.GetMemberRefIndex(Member m)     at System.Compiler.Ir2md.PopulateCustomAttributeTable()     at System.Compiler.Ir2md.SetupMetadataWriter(String debugSymbolsLocation)     at System.Compiler.Ir2md.WritePE(Module module, String debugSymbolsLocation, BinaryWriter writer)     at System.Compiler.Writer.WritePE(String location, Boolean writeDebugSymbols, Module module, Boolean delaySign, String keyFileName, String keyName)     at System.Compiler.Writer.WritePE(CompilerParameters compilerParameters, Module module)     at ILMerging.ILMerge.Merge()     at ILMerging.ILMerge.Main(String[] args) It turns out that this issue is caused by ILMerge.exe not being able to find the .NET 4 framework by default. The answer was ultimately found here. You either have to use the /lib option to point to your .NET 4 framework directory (e.g., “C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v4.0.30319” or “C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework64\v4.0.30319”) or just use an ILMerge.exe.config file that looks like this: 1: <configuration> 2: <startup useLegacyV2RuntimeActivationPolicy="true"> 3: <requiredRuntime safemode="true" imageVersion="v4.0.30319" version="v4.0.30319"/> 4: </startup> 5: </configuration> This was able to successfully resolve my issue.

  • What's the best way to read/write array contents from/to binary files in C#?

    - by Eric
I would like to read and write the contents of large ( 2GB), raw volume files (e.g. MRI scans). These files are just a sequence of e.g. 32 x 32 x 32 floats so they map well to 1D arrays. I would like to be able to read the contents of the binary volume files into 1D arrays of e.g. float or ushort (depending on the data type of the binary files) and similarly export the arrays back out to the raw volume files. What's the best way to do this with C#? Read/Write them 1 element at a time with BinaryReader/BinaryWriter? Read them piece-wise into byte arrays with FileStream.Read and then do a System.Buffer.BlockCopy between arrays (keeping in mind that I want 2GB arrays)? Write my own Reader/Writer?

Hello All, With help of this question C# 4.0: Convert pdf to byte[] and vice versa i was able to convert byte[] to PDF. But the problem here is not all the contents were written in PDF. Byte array length is 25990 approx. Only 21 to 26 KB size PDF file was created. When i try to open the PDF it says file is corrupted. What could be the reason? I tried the BinaryWriter but it creates PDF of 0 KB.

  • Response.BinaryWrite calls the ASPX page twice

    - by Jon.ee
I am trying to open a file in the browser using BinaryWriter. This causes the a dialog window to open and prompt the user to save or open the file. That behavior is fine; however, if I select open, the aspx page is called again and after a long wait the file finally opens. I set the ContentType Response.BinaryWrite(binary); Response.End(); Repsonse.Close(); This behavior only occurs with excel and word files. Browser IE8

  • .net real time stream processing - needed huge and fast RAM buffer

    - by mack369
The application I'm developing communicates with an digital audio device, which is capable of sending 24 different voice streams at the same time. The device is connected via USB, using FTDI device (serial port emulator) and D2XX Drivers (basic COM driver is to slow to handle transfer of 4.5Mbit). Basically the application consist of 3 threads: Main thread - GUI, control, ect. Bus reader - in this thread data is continuously read from the device and saved to a file buffer (there is no logic in this thread) Data interpreter - this thread reads the data from file buffer, converts to samples, does simple sample processing and saves the samples to separate wav files. The reason why I used file buffer is that I wanted to be sure that I won't loose any samples. The application doesn't use recording all the time, so I've chosen this solution because it was safe. The application works fine, except that buffered wave file generator is pretty slow. For 24 parallel records of 1 minute, it takes about 4 minutes to complete the recording. I'm pretty sure that eliminating the use of hard drive in this process will increase the speed much. The second problem is that the file buffer is really heavy for long records and I can't clean this up until the end of data processing (it would slow down the process even more). For RAM buffer I need at lest 1GB to make it work properly. What is the best way to allocate such a big amount of memory in .NET? I'm going to use this memory in 2 threads so a fast synchronization mechanism needed. I'm thinking about a cycle buffer: one big array, the Bus Reader saves the data, the Data Interpreter reads it. What do you think about it? [edit] Now for buffering I'm using classes BinaryReader and BinaryWriter based on a file.

  • BinaryFormatter in C# a good way to read files?

    - by mr-pac
I want to read a binary file which was created outside of my program. One obvious way in C# to read a binary file is to define class representing the file and then use a BinaryReader and read from the file via the Read* methods and assign the return values to the class properties. What I don't like with the approach is that I manually have to write code that reads the file, although the defined structure represents how the file is stored. I also have to keep the order correct when I read. After looking a bit around I came across the BinaryFormatter which can automatically serialize and deserialze object in binary format. One great advantage would be that I can read and also write the file without creating additional code. However I wonder if this approach is good for files created from other programs on not just serialized .NET objects. Take for example a graphics format file like BMP. Would it be a good idea to read the file with a BinaryFormatter or is it better to manually and write via BinaryReader and BinaryWriter? Or are there any other approaches which suit better? I'am not looking for concrete examples but just for an advice what is the best way to implement that.

  • UDP Tracker not responding

    - by kelton52
Alright, so I'm trying to connect to UDP trackers using c#, but I never get a response. I also don't get any errors. Here's my code. namespace UDPTester { class MainClass { public static bool messageReceived = false; public static Random Random = new Random(); public static void LOG(string format, params object[] args) { Console.WriteLine (format, args); } public static void Main (string[] args) { LOG ("Creating Packet..."); byte[] packet; using(var stream = new MemoryStream()) { var bc = new MiscUtil.Conversion.BigEndianBitConverter(); using(var br = new MiscUtil.IO.EndianBinaryWriter(bc,stream)) { LOG ("Magic Num: {0}",(Int64)0x41727101980); br.Write (0x41727101980); br.Write((Int32)0); br.Write ((Int32)Random.Next()); packet = stream.ToArray(); LOG ("Packet Size: {0}",packet.Length); } } LOG ("Connecting to tracker..."); var client = new System.Net.Sockets.UdpClient("tracker.openbittorrent.com",80); UdpState s = new UdpState(); s.e = client.Client.RemoteEndPoint; s.u = client; StartReceiving(s); LOG ("Sending Packet..."); client.Send(packet,packet.Length); while(!messageReceived) { Thread.Sleep(1000); } LOG ("Ended"); } public static void StartReceiving(UdpState state) { state.u.BeginReceive(ReceiveCallback,state); } public static void ReceiveCallback(IAsyncResult ar) { UdpClient u = (UdpClient)((UdpState)(ar.AsyncState)).u; IPEndPoint e = (IPEndPoint)((UdpState)(ar.AsyncState)).e; Byte[] receiveBytes = u.EndReceive(ar, ref e); string receiveString = Encoding.ASCII.GetString(receiveBytes); LOG("Received: {0}", receiveString); messageReceived = true; StartReceiving((UdpState)ar.AsyncState); } } public class UdpState { public UdpClient u; public EndPoint e; } } I was using a normal BinaryWriter, but that didn't work, and I read somewhere that it wants it's data in BigEndian. This doesn't work for any of the UDP trackers I've found, any ideas why I'm not getting a response? Did they maybe change the protocol and not tell anyone? HTTP trackers all work fine. Trackers I've tried udp://tracker.publicbt.com:80 udp://tracker.ccc.de:80 udp://tracker.istole.it:80 Also, I'm not interested in using MonoTorrent(and when I was using it, the UDP didn't work anyways). • Performance Optimization &ndash; It Is Faster When You Can Measure It

    - by Alois Kraus
Performance optimization in bigger systems is hard because the measured numbers can vary greatly depending on the measurement method of your choice. To measure execution timing of specific methods in your application you usually use Time Measurement Method Potential Pitfalls Stopwatch Most accurate method on recent processors. Internally it uses the RDTSC instruction. Since the counter is processor specific you can get greatly different values when your thread is scheduled to another core or the core goes into a power saving mode. But things do change luckily: Intel's Designer's vol3b, section 16.11.1 "16.11.1 Invariant TSC The time stamp counter in newer processors may support an enhancement, referred to as invariant TSC. Processor's support for invariant TSC is indicated by CPUID.80000007H:EDX[8]. The invariant TSC will run at a constant rate in all ACPI P-, C-. and T-states. This is the architectural behavior moving forward. On processors with invariant TSC support, the OS may use the TSC for wall clock timer services (instead of ACPI or HPET timers). TSC reads are much more efficient and do not incur the overhead associated with a ring transition or access to a platform resource." DateTime. Now Good but it has only a resolution of 16ms which can be not enough if you want more accuracy.   Reporting Method Potential Pitfalls Console.WriteLine Ok if not called too often. Debug.Print Are you really measuring performance with Debug Builds? Shame on you. Trace.WriteLine Better but you need to plug in some good output listener like a trace file. But be aware that the first time you call this method it will read your app.config and deserialize your system.diagnostics section which does also take time.   In general it is a good idea to use some tracing library which does measure the timing for you and you only need to decorate some methods with tracing so you can later verify if something has changed for the better or worse. In my previous article I did compare measuring performance with quantum mechanics. This analogy does work surprising well. When you measure a quantum system there is a lower limit how accurately you can measure something. The Heisenberg uncertainty relation does tell us that you cannot measure of a quantum system the impulse and location of a particle at the same time with infinite accuracy. For programmers the two variables are execution time and memory allocations. If you try to measure the timings of all methods in your application you will need to store them somewhere. The fastest storage space besides the CPU cache is the memory. But if your timing values do consume all available memory there is no memory left for the actual application to run. On the other hand if you try to record all memory allocations of your application you will also need to store the data somewhere. This will cost you memory and execution time. These constraints are always there and regardless how good the marketing of tool vendors for performance and memory profilers are: Any measurement will disturb the system in a non predictable way. Commercial tool vendors will tell you they do calculate this overhead and subtract it from the measured values to give you the most accurate values but in reality it is not entirely true. After falling into the trap to trust the profiler timings several times I have got into the habit to Measure with a profiler to get an idea where potential bottlenecks are. Measure again with tracing only the specific methods to check if this method is really worth optimizing. Optimize it Measure again. Be surprised that your optimization has made things worse. Think harder Implement something that really works. Measure again Finished! - Or look for the next bottleneck. Recently I have looked into issues with serialization performance. For serialization DataContractSerializer was used and I was not sure if XML is really the most optimal wire format. After looking around I have found protobuf-net which uses Googles Protocol Buffer format which is a compact binary serialization format. What is good for Google should be good for us. A small sample app to check out performance was a matter of minutes: using ProtoBuf; using System; using System.Diagnostics; using System.IO; using System.Reflection; using System.Runtime.Serialization; [DataContract, Serializable] class Data { [DataMember(Order=1)] public int IntValue { get; set; } [DataMember(Order = 2)] public string StringValue { get; set; } [DataMember(Order = 3)] public bool IsActivated { get; set; } [DataMember(Order = 4)] public BindingFlags Flags { get; set; } } class Program { static MemoryStream _Stream = new MemoryStream(); static MemoryStream Stream { get { _Stream.Position = 0; _Stream.SetLength(0); return _Stream; } } static void Main(string[] args) { DataContractSerializer ser = new DataContractSerializer(typeof(Data)); Data data = new Data { IntValue = 100, IsActivated = true, StringValue = "Hi this is a small string value to check if serialization does work as expected" }; var sw = Stopwatch.StartNew(); int Runs = 1000 * 1000; for (int i = 0; i < Runs; i++) { //ser.WriteObject(Stream, data); Serializer.Serialize<Data>(Stream, data); } sw.Stop(); Console.WriteLine("Did take {0:N0}ms for {1:N0} objects", sw.Elapsed.TotalMilliseconds, Runs); Console.ReadLine(); } } The results are indeed promising: Serializer Time in ms N objects protobuf-net   807 1000000 DataContract 4402 1000000 Nearly a factor 5 faster and a much more compact wire format. Lets use it! After switching over to protbuf-net the transfered wire data has dropped by a factor two (good) and the performance has worsened by nearly a factor two. How is that possible? We have measured it? Protobuf-net is much faster! As it turns out protobuf-net is faster but it has a cost: For the first time a type is de/serialized it does use some very smart code-gen which does not come for free. Lets try to measure this one by setting of our performance test app the Runs value not to one million but to 1. Serializer Time in ms N objects protobuf-net 85 1 DataContract 24 1 The code-gen overhead is significant and can take up to 200ms for more complex types. The break even point where the code-gen cost is amortized by its faster serialization performance is (assuming small objects) somewhere between 20.000-40.000 serialized objects. As it turned out my specific scenario involved about 100 types and 1000 serializations in total. That explains why the good old DataContractSerializer is not so easy to take out of business. The final approach I ended up was to reduce the number of types and to serialize primitive types via BinaryWriter directly which turned out to be a pretty good alternative. It sounded good until I measured again and found that my optimizations so far do not help much. After looking more deeper at the profiling data I did found that one of the 1000 calls did take 50% of the time. So how do I find out which call it was? Normal profilers do fail short at this discipline. A (totally undeserved) relatively unknown profiler is SpeedTrace which does unlike normal profilers create traces of your applications by instrumenting your IL code at runtime. This way you can look at the full call stack of the one slow serializer call to find out if this stack was something special. Unfortunately the call stack showed nothing special. But luckily I have my own tracing as well and I could see that the slow serializer call did happen during the serialization of a bool value. When you encounter after much analysis something unreasonable you cannot explain it then the chances are good that your thread was suspended by the garbage collector. If there is a problem with excessive GCs remains to be investigated but so far the serialization performance seems to be mostly ok.  When you do profile a complex system with many interconnected processes you can never be sure that the timings you just did measure are accurate at all. Some process might be hitting the disc slowing things down for all other processes for some seconds as well. There is a big difference between warm and cold startup. If you restart all processes you can basically forget the first run because of the OS disc cache, JIT and GCs make the measured timings very flexible. When you are in need of a random number generator you should measure cold startup times of a sufficiently complex system. After the first run you can try again getting different and much lower numbers. Now try again at least two times to get some feeling how stable the numbers are. Oh and try to do the same thing the next day. It might be that the bottleneck you found yesterday is gone today. Thanks to GC and other random stuff it can become pretty hard to find stuff worth optimizing if no big bottlenecks except bloatloads of code are left anymore. When I have found a spot worth optimizing I do make the code changes and do measure again to check if something has changed. If it has got slower and I am certain that my change should have made it faster I can blame the GC again. The thing is that if you optimize stuff and you allocate less objects the GC times will shift to some other location. If you are unlucky it will make your faster working code slower because you see now GCs at times where none were before. This is where the stuff does get really tricky. A safe escape hatch is to create a repro of the slow code in an isolated application so you can change things fast in a reliable manner. Then the normal profilers do also start working again. As Vance Morrison does point out it is much more complex to profile a system against the wall clock compared to optimize for CPU time. The reason is that for wall clock time analysis you need to understand how your system does work and which threads (if you have not one but perhaps 20) are causing a visible delay to the end user and which threads can wait a long time without affecting the user experience at all. Next time: Commercial profiler shootout.
