• Considerations for a business looking to transition from PSTN to IP Telephony

  Full disclosure - This is related to a homework assignment question. I am not asking you to do my work for me, I am merely looking for some pointers and considerations to direct me in my further research. I have an assignment I'm working on where I've been given a scenario where a business wants to look into transitioning to using "Internet Telephone" as opposed to a traditional PSTN/PBX system and I need to write a report on it. I'm after some high level pointers from people, especially anyone that has been involved in a real life transition of this nature, on what some of the most important considerations are. These can be financial considerations, initial setup considerations, ongoing administrative considerations, quality of service considerations or anything else that is pertinent to performing such a transition.

• Ubuntu 10.04 freezing and Ctrl + Alt + Backspace does nothing but music keeps playing

  I'm having intermittent problems where the screen will freeze in Ubuntu. I've tried using Ctrl + Alt + Backspace to restart the X-server, though this does nothing. When the freeze occurs, there's a small square of black dashes around the mouse pointer - maybe 1 inch in size. These dashes look a lot like a 2d barcode. The rest of the screen looks normal, but I can't move the mouse and none of the keyboard shortcuts work to do anything. However, music that I begin playing before the freeze continues to play, which seems to indicate it hasn't stalled up completely. I've noticed a similar freezing problem when I'm using Windows 7. That is, I see the same barcode like dashes around the mouse pointer when it freezes up. So I'm guessing it's either a driver or hardware problem. I thought if it was a hardware problem though, the whole computer might stop working (i.e. music would stop playing)? The video card I am using is an Nvidia, and I believe it's in the 7600 range. In Ubuntu I have the drivers for the card set to the latest available (proprietary). Ideally I'd like to be able to continue using the proprietary drivers. Is there any known issues with the drivers for this model graphics card, or has anyone experienced the same problem and knows how to fix it?

• How to make VLC show single FLAC file containing many tracks as separate tracks

  I have a single .flac file that encompasses multiple tracks comprising a music album along with the corresponding .cue file. I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 with VLC player, and am trying to get VLC player to show the individual tracks and allow me to use the previous and next controls to move back and forth between tracks. The problem I'm having is that when I open the single .flac file with VLC, it just shows a single track the duration of the entire album, and I'm unable to skip back and forth between tracks. Is there any way to have VLC show the individual tracks contained within a .flac file without having to pre-split the .flac file into individual track files first?

• Remote Desktop to Windows 2008 hosted in VirtualBox makes host unresponsive

  I have installed Windows 2008 R2 SP1 in a VirtualBox VM. It works fine, except that if I Remote Desktop (RDP) to the VM from the host (machine running VirtualBox, Windows 7 SP1), after a minute or so the windows shell becomes unresponsive. I can no longer start task manager, open the start menu or switch applications. Keyboard input also drops some keys. Mouse movement is not affected. Any idea what is causing this? NB: This is Windows RDP, not the remote display built into VirtualBox

• Prevent Ultrabay HDD from ejecting on sleep

  I have a lenovo T430s thinkpad with a small SSD primary drive and 500gb ultrabay drive. When I put the computer to sleep and then return, I get the message titled "problem ejecting < drive name " "Windows can't stop your 'Generic volume' device because a program is still using it." This pop up is very annoying every time every time I use the computer. I don't want to disable write caching [D:Hardware[drive]policiesquick removal] because I want best performance and never remove the drive. Any ways to avoid this pop up?

• MX setup for a domain registrar and web host with the same domain name

  I have a client that has registered their domain through a registrar, then signed up for hosting on through a different provider, but used the same domain for said provider (didn't re-register the domain, I think the declaration of domain on the host was for CNAME records specifically). The registrar properly routes his emails at his domain name (email hosted by Google), but the problem is, on the hosted site, when an administration action occurs, he is supposed to get an email stating so. The site is sending him an email with PHP and he never receives an email when its to his address with the same domain name; all other domain addresses work just fine. I have to imagine its something misconfigured on the host. From what I can assume, I think that the host sees that the to and from domains are the same, and it decides not to route the email externally. Currently, the registrar uses the proper nameservers for the host, and there are MX records on both the registrar and the host (they are identical entries). I hope I've been clear in my question. • Choose between multiple keyboard layouts for different users in GDM3

  I am trying to set up a computer with multiple users each with different preferred keyboard layouts. The biggest sticking point right now is allowing each to log in comfortably. GDM used to offer a way to choose keyboard layout, but I can't discover how to set this up in GDM3. All the solutions I found when Googling this problem suggest changing the keyboard layout in xorg.conf, but that only sets a different single layout and still does not seem to allow me to change the layout between multiple choices. How can I allow multiple layouts when logging in?

• Notification Email Best Practices--From Server Setup to Programming

  All, I'm in the process now of building a SaaS tool that allows network admins to generate notification emails to the members of the end-users of our platform (among many many other things). I'm running into a bit of an "out of my expertise" wall, as I know there are a lot of variables involved with configuring an application that can: Run in a distributed way via load balancing and still-- Leverage a single mail server for sending notification emails Process unsubscribe requests Avoid any ISP blacklisting in the process. If anyone has the time and has done this before, I'd love if you could walk me through the A-Z of best practices both from a configuration perspective and an execution perspective for generating these emails (anything from necessary DNS settings to ideal SMTP setup and configuration) Currently, our application generates email via Google Apps using the PHPMailer class. While this works well, it doesn't queue messages (potential for timeout problems if any of our clients amass a very large list of end-users), and Google limits the amount of allowed generated email messages to 500/day. I know this is a lofty question, but any guidance you could provide would be smashing and a big help as we work through this hurtle in our beta development stage. Thanks!

  i'm trying to send the iOS device name along with the deviceToken to my server in didRegisterForRemoteNotificationsWithDeviceToken.. my device has an apostrophe in it and the request string shows as ....&name=John+Doe’s+iPhone ... I've tried replacing "'" with "" and "’" with "" .. but neither fix it.. i assume i need to convert the encoding? • fast, clean, C, timsort implementation?

  Does anyone know of a clean implementation of timsort? The Python sources contain a description and code for the original timsort, but it is understandably full of python-specific calls. I have a smoothly varying 2D array of double floats that I would like to sort as quickly as possible. It ought to contain a lot of monotonically increasing and decreasing runs. I'd like to try timsorting the rows individually, and then merging the sorted rows. If you know of a better sort technique, I'm open to suggestions. Thanks!

• Nested/Child TransactionScope Rollback

  I am trying to nest TransactionScopes (.net 4.0) as you would nest Transactions in SQL Server, however it looks like they operate differently. I want my child transactions to be able to rollback if they fail, but allow the parent transaction to decide whether to commit/rollback the whole operation.   Working with Unity, I thought it would be a good idea to create some LiveTemplates to help out with creating configuration entries. For example, I want to create some typeAlias elements in a file called "unity.config": <typeAlias alias="QueryService" type="type,QueryAssembly"/> So, I created a live template: Shortcut: typeAlias Available "in all files" <typeAlias alias="$ALIAS$" type="$TYPE$,$ASSEMBLY$"/> the unity.config file is an XML file. I put the cursor in an empty spot and type "typeAlias" and then the tab key. Nothing happens. Any ideas?

• Does .NET have a built in IEnumerable for multiple collections?

  I need an easy way to iterate over multiple collections without actually merging them, and I couldn't find anything built into .NET that looks like it does that. It feels like this should be a somewhat common situation. I don't want to reinvent the wheel. • USB Barcode Scanner and WM_KEYDOWN

  I am trying to write a program that can will read a barcode scanner. In addition, I need it to read the input even when the application is not the window in focus (i.e., running in system tray, etc). I found this article, titled Distinguishing Barcode Scanners from the Keyboard in WinForms, that seems to solve the exact problem. It is working pretty good, it detects my device and handles the WM_INPUT message. However, it is checking to see if the RAWINPUT.keyboard.Message is WM_KEYDOWN (0x100). It never seems to receive this. The only line of code I've altered in the code provided in the article is adding a Console.Out.WriteLine to output the actual values of that message: Console.Out.WriteLine("message: {0}", raw.keyboard.Message.ToString("X")); if (raw.keyboard.Message == NativeMethods.WM_KEYDOWN) { .... Here is what it outputs: message: B message: 1000B message: 3 message: 10003 message: 8 message: 10008 message: 3 message: 10003 message: 5 message: 10005 message: 3 message: 10003 message: 8 message: 10008 message: 8 message: 10008 message: 4 message: 10004 message: 9 message: 10009 message: 9 message: 10009 message: 3 message: 10003 The value I'm expecting to receive when this completes correctly is: 257232709 Which I verified by scanning to notepad. I don't know if the Operation System is relevant here, but I figured I should mention that I'm running this in Windows 7 64 and Visual Studio 2010 and .NET Framework 3.5. Scanner is a USB Barcode Scanner, Symbol LS2208, setup as "HID KEYBOARD EMULATION"

• Google Chrome Speed Tracer what does Request Timing and Response Timing actually measure?

  I'm testing out the Google Chrome Speed Tracer on a few common web pages and taking a look through the results. One thing I'm not sure I understand is what the "Request Timing" and "Response Timing" properties of resources are actually measuring. Initially I thought Request Timing must measure the time from a request for a resource being sent and when that request arrived at the server. However, I then wondered how the Speed Tracer would actually have any way of measuring this. Furthermore, the Response Timing that I'm getting for resources tends to be far less than the Request Timing (e.g. 500ms request, 1ms response), which is a little bit suss. So is anyone able to explain exactly what Request Timing and Response Timing are measuring?

• A PHP script to stream internet radio?

  I've been searching and searching and I haven't yet come up with a solution to host my own streaming audio player. I'm looking for a way to host an internet radio player that connects to whatever streams I enter in and plays them. I'm not looking to play my MP3s or anything like that. I'm looking to play content from 181.fm or 1Club.fm, for example. I'd even settle for ShoutCast-only streams. I've been to www.wavestreaming.com but it didnt work for me. I'm guessing its because in the very first box where you enter your website url, it leads in for you: http//www. then you fill in the rest. My site is https:// and does not contain a www. in the URL. I'm guessing that has something to do with it. Any links, suggestions for search topics, or even a brief technical overview of what I should be looking into would be greatly appreciated. • PHP: optimum configuration storage ?

  Hello, My application gets configured via a lot of key/values (let's say 30.000 for instance) I want to find the best deployment method for these configurations, knowing that I want to avoid DEFINEs to allow for runtime re-configuration. I have thought of - pre-compiling them into an array via a php file - pre-compiling them into a tmpfs sqlite database - pre-compiling them into a memcached db what are my options for the best random access time to these configuration (memory is not an issue) ? • Persisting complex data between postbacks in ASP.NET MVC

  I'm developing an ASP.NET MVC 2 application that connects to some services to do data retrieval and update. The services require that I provide the original entity along with the updated entity when updating data. This is so it can do change tracking and optimistic concurrency. The services cannot be changed. My problem is that I need to somehow store the original entity between postbacks. In WebForms, I would have used ViewState, but from what I have read, that is out for MVC. The original values do not have to be tamper proof as the services treat them as untrusted. The entities would be (max) 1k and it is an intranet app. The options I have come up are: Session - Ruled out - Store the entity in the Session, but I don't like this idea as there are no plans to share session between URL - Ruled out - Data is too big HiddenField - Store the serialized entity in a hidden field, perhaps with encryption/encoding HiddenVersion - The entities have a (SQL) version field on them, which I could put into a hidden field. Then on a save I get "original" entity from the services and compare the versions, doing my own optimistic concurrency. Cookies - Like 3 or 4, but using a cookie instead of a hidden field I'm leaning towards option 4, although 3 would be simpler. Are these valid options or am I going down the wrong track? Is there a better way of doing this?
