  • How common is it to submit papers to journals or conferences outside of academia?

    - by Furry
I worked in academia a few years, but more on the D-side of R&D. The race for papers never appealed to me and I'm a practical not theoretical type, but I do like reading papers on certain topics (e.g. Google Papers, NLP, FB papers, ...) a lot. How common is it that normally working developers submit papers to conferences or even journals? It seems to be somewhat common in certain companies (it's not common or encouraged in mine). Do journals or conferences even take papers by an academic nobody (BSc) under consideration? I ask, because I have a few rough ideas and I would just like to bring them into form, one way or the other. Bonus question: Is there a list of CS (in the widest sense) conferences/journals with short descriptions? PS (Four out of five researchers I met published quite some fluffy stuff for my taste. I am no expert, but those people told me sometimes themselves, that the implementation does not matter, just the idea and the presentation. I always wondered about that. I probably could write about ideas all day long (not instantly but with a bit of preparation), but the implementation and the practical part is the really hard part, that academia just does not like to be concerned with. Also many papers actually scream: I was written so the publication list of my author gets longer - which is a waste of time for everyone, and often a waste of tax money, too. When I think of CS-ish papers, I think of running implementations or actual data, like e.g. Google's Map Reduce, Serving Large-scale Batch Computed Data with Project Voldemort or the like.)

  • Cannot get Correct month for a call from call log history

    - by Nishant Kumar
I am trying to extract information from the call log of the android. I am getting the call date that is one month back from the actual time of call. I mean to say that the information extracted by my code for the date of call is one mont back than the actual call date. I have the following in the Emulator: I saved a contact. Then I made a call to the contact. Code: I have 3 ways of extracting call Date information but getting the same wrong result. My code is as follows: /* Make the query to call log content */ Cursor callLogResult = context.getContentResolver().query( CallLog.Calls.CONTENT_URI, null, null, null, null); int columnIndex = callLogResult.getColumnIndex(Calls.DATE); Long timeInResult = callLogResult.getLong(columnIndex); /* Method 1 to change the milliseconds obtained to the readable date formate */ Time time = new Time(); time.toMillis(true); time.set(timeInResult); String callDate= time.monthDay+"-"+time.month+"-"+time.year; /* Method 2 for extracting the date from tha value read from the column */ Calendar calendar = Calendar.getInstance(); calendar.setTimeInMillis(time); String Month = calendar.get(Calendar.MONTH) ; /* Method 3 for extracting date from the result obtained */ Date date = new Date(timeInResult); String mont = date.getMonth() While using the Calendar method , I also tried to set the DayLight SAving Offset but it didnot worked, calendar.setTimeZone(TimeZone.getTimeZone("Europe/Paris")); int DST_OFFSET = calendar.get( Calendar.DST_OFFSET ); // DST_OFFSET Boolean isSet = calendar.getTimeZone().useDaylightTime(); if(isSet) calendar.set(Calendar.DST_OFFSET , 0); int reCheck = calendar.get(Calendar.DST_OFFSET ); But the value is not set to 0 in recheck. I am getting the wrong month value by using this also. Please some one help me where I am wrong? or is this the error in emulator ?? Thanks, Nishant Kumar Engineering Student

  • WCF: Per-Call and Per-Session services...need convincing that Per-Call is worthwhile

    - by mrlane
Hello all. We are currently doing a review of our WCF service design and one thing that is bothering me is the decision between Per-Call and Per-Session services. I believe I understand the concept behind both, but I am not really seeing the advantage of Per-Call services. I understand that the motivation for using Per-Call services is that a WCF services only holds a servier object for the life of a call thereby restricting the time that an expensive resource is held by the service instance, but to me its much simpler to use the more OO like Per-Session model where your proxy object instance always corrisponds to the same server object instance and just handle any expensive resources manually. For example, say I have a CRUD Service with Add, Update, Delete, Select methods on it. This could be done as a Per-Call service with database connection (the "expensive resource") instanciated in the server object constructor. Alternately it could be a Per-Session service with a database connection instanciated and closed within each CRUD method exposed. To me it is no different resource wise and it makes the programming model simpler as the client can be assured that they always have the same server object for their proxies: any in-expensive state that there may be between calls is maintained and no extra parameters are needed on methods to identify what state data must be retrieved by the service when it is instanciating a new server object again (as in the case of Per-Call). Its just like using classes and objects, where the same resource management issues apply, but we dont create new object instances for each method call we have on an object! So what am I missing with the Per-Call model? Thanks

  • Change Call Screen

    - by vyana
I need to change or customize the call screen when initiating a call on Android. After searching on google I do not find any way to do it. There is no way to send DTMF tones during a call, the idea is to send a specific number to the call screen. So when a call is made is possible to see the number to dial during a call to the PBX. I tried to putting the number in the "status bar", but the notification hide after seconds and it is not practical. I appreciate any other suggestion. Thanks

  • Bringing people into an Asterisk conference call

    - by Harley
I'm using Asterisk 1.4 and am trying to work out a way to bring people into a conference call. In the ideal scenario two people would be talking and one of them would push some keys, then a phone number and then the three of them would be in a conference. From there they should be able to bring in other people as well. This seems to be what the Asterisk n-way call HOWTO is trying to do, but it doesn't work quite properly for me. Here's what happens: 1. Internal person A calls person B 2. Person A presses *0, he is given a dial tone and person B is taken to a conference room 3. Person A calls person C and they can talk, and then person A presses **. 4. Person C is brought to the conference room, but person A is disconnected. In the last step, A should be taken to the conference room as well. Here's the relevant logs, where 230 is person A, 231 is person B, 207 is person C, and 282 is the conference room.

  • SQLAuthority News – 2 Whitepapers Announced – AlwaysOn Architecture Guide: Building a High Availability and Disaster Recovery Solution

    - by pinaldave
Understanding AlwaysOn Architecture is extremely important when building a solution with failover clusters and availability groups. Microsoft has just released two very important white papers related to this subject. Both the white papers are written by top experts in industry and have been reviewed by excellent panel of experts. Every time I talk with various organizations who are adopting the SQL Server 2012 they are always excited with the concept of the new feature AlwaysOn. One of the requests I often here is the related to detailed documentations which can help enterprises to build a robust high availability and disaster recovery solution. I believe following two white paper now satisfies the request. AlwaysOn Architecture Guide: Building a High Availability and Disaster Recovery Solution by Using AlwaysOn Availability Groups SQL Server 2012 AlwaysOn Availability Groups provides a unified high availability and disaster recovery (HADR) solution. This paper details the key topology requirements of this specific design pattern on important concepts like quorum configuration considerations, steps required to build the environment, and a workflow that shows how to handle a disaster recovery. AlwaysOn Architecture Guide: Building a High Availability and Disaster Recovery Solution by Using Failover Cluster Instances and Availability Groups SQL Server 2012 AlwaysOn Failover Cluster Instances (FCI) and AlwaysOn Availability Groups provide a comprehensive high availability and disaster recovery solution. This paper details the key topology requirements of this specific design pattern on important concepts like asymmetric storage considerations, quorum model selection, quorum votes, steps required to build the environment, and a workflow. If you are not going to implement AlwaysOn feature, this two Whitepapers are still a great reference material to review as it will give you complete idea regarding what it takes to implement AlwaysOn architecture and what kind of efforts needed. One should at least bookmark above two white papers for future reference. • iPhone - how to be notified of call completion

    - by ecodan
Hi- I'm developing an application that needs to take action on completed phone calls, preferably right after the call ends but minimally once per day. I've read up on the new CoreTelphony framework, and it seems I can get call events if my app is active, but I don't see how to launch/wake my app when a call ends if my app is not the foreground app. I also don't see how any of the new pseudo-background "modes" would allow my app to listen for these events in the background. Do any of you know how this might be done? If post-call processing isn't possible, then I'd like to figure out a way to automatically wake my app up once per day, pull all of the call events since the last wakeup, and process them. I know how I might do this with Push or Local notifications, but my understanding is that those require user action to continue; in this case, I just want the processing to happen automatically. Is there a mechanism that would enable this? Thanks, Dan

Is there any way to control the background music when in a call. My music volume becomes softer when i am in a call but it becomes louder as soon as i end the call. final AudioManager mAudioManager = (AudioManager) ctx .getSystemService(AUDIO_SERVICE); final int originalVolume = mAudioManager .getStreamVolume(AudioManager.STREAM_MUSIC); mAudioManager .setStreamVolume( AudioManager.STREAM_MUSIC, mAudioManager .getStreamMaxVolume(AudioManager.STREAM_MUSIC), 0); mp = new MediaPlayer(); mp.setAudioStreamType(AudioManager.STREAM_MUSIC); mAudioManager.setMode(AudioManager.MODE_NORMAL); Class audioSystemClass = Class .forName("android.media.AudioSystem"); Method setForceUse = audioSystemClass.getMethod( "setForceUse", int.class, int.class); // First 1 == FOR_MEDIA, second 1 == FORCE_SPEAKER. • After making a call programatically, my android app crashes

    - by Casidiablo
Hello! The title explains all... I have this snippet of code in my application: String url = createTelUrl("3112007315"); Intent intent = new Intent(Intent.ACTION_CALL); intent.setData(Uri.parse(url)); context.startActivity(intent); It does make a call, but once the call ends, my application crashes. I'd like to return to my application once the call has finished, but I read this post and it seems not to be possible. So... is there anyway to at least pause my application and resume it once the call has finished? Thank you so much for reading.

  • How can i call an XSL template within a hyperlink in the XSL stylesheet

    - by AdRock
I am making my own XSL stylesheet which will perform different views on the same XML document Because the XML document is so large, i would like some links at the top of the outputted page to call each template that will be used to display the data. At the moment I can create links that use anchors to a place in the document but it would be better if i just call each template as needed. How can i just call each template in a link? Would i have to use xlink? <?xml version="1.0" encoding="ISO-8859-1"?> <xsl:stylesheet version="1.0" xmlns:xsl="http://www.w3.org/1999/XSL/Transform"> <xsl:template match="folktask"> <html> <body> <a href="folk.xml#organisers">Show all the users</a> <a href="folk.xml#organisers">Show all the festival organisers</a> <xsl:call-template name="show_all_users" /> <xsl:call-template name="show_all_organisers" /> </body> </html> </xsl:template> </xsl:stylesheet>
