  If I'm right, each request for http://ajax.microsoft.com/ajax/jQuery/jquery-1.4.2.js use something like 3 kb of microsoft.com cookies. I don't understand something and it doesn't matter or microsoft do it wrong?

  Here is the header from firebug that shows the scope of the PHP Session cookie: Set-Cookie PHPSESSID=f0e2dfe56cc78be718c8154ac80d1ae2; path=/; domain=pix-all.com But still the PHP Session cookie is been sent for any requests to static.pix-all.com Cookie PHPSESSID=f0e2dfe56cc78be718c8154ac80d1ae2; What could be the problem?

• Serving CSS from a static domain

  I want to serve my css and images from a static cookieless domain. Now my problem is how to point to the images from within my css files. I don't want to program my domain hard within the css file, for example: http://static.com/image.png I would rather have a variable pointing to the the image, so it works for every static domain i use. What is the best way for achieving this. Should i run the whole css file trough php and add the static domain in front of all the png references. A downside in this is that i have to place the whole css in html. Or is there another more optimized way of doing this.

• SEO for images: can I use a different (cookieless) domain?

  Hello, We want to increase the value of some of our important images by means of SEO, and we want to start serving them from a different, i.e. cookieless, domain. We want to go from http://www.example.com/images/1234.jpg to http://www.example.com/germany/bavaria/landscape.jpg which can easily be done via URL rewriting. Then on the other hand, we would like to serve the image from a completely different domain, let's say http://www.examplestatic.com/germany/bavaria/landscape.jpg, to save the overhead of sending the cookie from www.example.com. Somehow I feel that this is not a good idea because I move the image away from the content by putting it on a different domain. Can anyone shed some light on this problem? Naturally, I would just use a different subdomain, e.g. img.example.com, but we already use subdomains for languages and our cookies are valid for all subdomains of example.com, so this won't help.   Let me try to explain by example. Say website is hosted at example.com (NOT www.example.com). In order to serve static content cookie-free, I've chosen to use a different domain example-static.com. Now, lets consider that my static content is currently served like this: http://example.com/js/script.js http://example.com/css/style.css http://example.com/media/image.jpg ** Now I create a CNAME record aliasing example-static.com to my main domain i.e. example.com so that the static content is served as such: http://example-static.com/js/script.js http://example-static.com/css/style.css http://example-static.com/media/image.jpg ** Is that all I have to do? Will all browsers execute JavaScript files and load web fonts without any security concerns? OR should I be using some .htaccess rules to modify header information and the like? PS: It would be great if you can provide what rules should be added, if need be.

• How practical to change MVC app from traditional authentication to cookieless?

  I have an application written in MVC that uses your regular .Net Forms Authentication. There's nothing particularly new or exciting going on with it. My client has now asked that users be able to log in to the app on the same machine but in different browsers, or different tabs within the same browser. To my mind, he's asking for a scope change to have authentication moved to cookieless instead of its current design. Not having had any experience with doing this in MVC, I'm curious to know before I get started how much hurt I'm in for by trying this. Are there better ways to do it? What should I consider? Any advice appreciated.

However to some users this gets displayed as http://://www.foo.com/Show.aspx?pageid=10&AspxAutoDetectCookieSupport=1 Now i read that the AspxAutoDetectCookieSupport=1 gets appended as in my web.config since I have my web.config as <sessionState cookieless="AutoDetect"/> whereas it should be <sessionState cookieless="UseCookies"/> What I wanted to know is that is there an issue doing this change. Is there any other way to just have the url show up as http://www.foo.com/Show.aspx?pageid=10

I already added the <sessionState> tag in my web.config file like this <sessionState mode="InProc" cookieless="false" timeout="20"> </sessionState> I get a session ID in my url like this if I use cookieless="true" http://localhost:2967/%28S%28hcawmi55zoruuy453fbo3k55%29%29/RmdReqBankAccount But I still can't use session variables in my application. I set the variable like this in my login method: Session["username"] = userName; and I retrieve it like this string user_id = (string)Session["username"]; I get an empty string when trying to retrieve values.

• Upgrading to IIS7 stopped Firefox from receiving cookies?

  Our website has been using IIS6 for a long time. We test on IE8, Firefox, and Chrome. All browsers worked fine. We recently did an upgrade to IIS7, and Chrome and IE8 continue to work normally, but Firefox appears to be unable to get the ASP session cookie. As a result, when our code checks the Session[] object, we see nothing, we think the user has logged out, and the site resets your session. Does anyone know why upgrading to IIS7 would cause this behavior in Firefox? We've: 1) Reverted our application pool back to classic mode (no change); 2) Added a dummy value in the Global.asax object (no change); and 3) changed the web.config file from "authentication cookieless=autodetect" to "cookieless=usercookie" and back (no change).

  For testing I have 1 isolated page - no masters, controls, …. My sessions are lost after about 30 seconds. I’ve tried setting timeout on the page itself, in web.config, both, and neither. Tried forms authentication with timeout and windows authentication. Recycle the AppPool after changes. I can response.write from the Session_Start , but I never get any response.writes from the Session_End. • Why does a change of Session State provider lead to an ASPx page yielding garbage?

  I have an aspnet webapp which has worked very well up until now. I was recently asked to explore ways of making it scale better. I found that seperation of database and Webapp would help. Further I was told that if I changed my session providing mechanism to SQLServer, I would be able to duplicate the Web Stack to several machines which could each call back to the state server allowing the load to be distirbuted better. This sounds logical. So I created an ASPState database using ASPNet_RegSQL.exe as detailed in many locations across the web and changed the web.config on my app from: <sessionState mode="InProc" cookieless="false" timeout="20" /> To: <sessionState mode="SQLServer" sqlConnectionString="Server=SomeSQLServer;user=SomeUser;password=SomePassword" cookieless="false" timeout="20" /> Then I addressed my app, which presented me with its logon screen and I duly logged in. Once in I was presented, not with the page I was expecting, but with: I can change the sessionstate back and forth. This problem goes away and then comes back based on which set of configuration I use. Why is this happening?

It just appears that sessions drop randomly for random users It's a single server setup, no web farms and no load balancing Even though the issue I point to above doesn't occur in the logs, is it worth increasing the stateNetworkTimeout attribute anyway?   I want to pass the sessionID as a json parameter, I can see how to override SessionIDManager and such, but this just covers custom creation/validation of sessionID's as opposed to where it actually gets the sessionID from. There is of course 'cookieless' which puts it in the url, but that doesn't work for me either. So i'd like to override the session handling so I can specify where it should look for the sessionID.

• Apache ProxyPass/ProxyPassReverse to IIS

  We have an ASP.NET web application which is mapped to a folder on an apache hosted php site using ProxyPass.ProxyPassReverse. A couple of problems being encountered. cookies are being lost which breaks the site navigation, this can be overcome by setting the asp app as cookieless. Forms authentication is used on the ASP site, this is also broken withe the proxypass in place, suspect this is cookie related also. ASP site works ok when run from a domain/ip address. Use of a separate domain / sub-domain is not an option duew to client requirements.
