  • Detect damage done by virus

    - by user38471
Hey, this morning after I went to college a virus infected my pc without any user interaction at my end. When I came home my computer was completely frozen and infected with lots of trojans. I have not typed anything important since returning so keys cannot be logged. However I want to know exactly when my computer crashed from the time of infection to see what could potentially be done remotely by a hacker. The virus my pc was diagonosed with was "fakespypro" http://www.microsoft.com/security/portal/Threat/Encyclopedia/Entry.aspx?Name=Win32%2fFakeSpypro on a fully updated windows 7 installation with firewall enabled. My computer was connected to an internal dorm room network, so probably that has had to do something with it. Any further information about how I could backtrace this virus infection or ways to discover what data might be stolen would be greatly appriciated.

  • Website visitors are still being redirected after "fixing" the damage from a conditional redirect website attack

    - by Shannon
BACKGROUND A website of mine was recently the target of a conditional redirect attack. PHP code was added to my pages to redirect visitors. The .htaccess file was edited to redirect visitors. I've re-uploaded my website so the compromised PHP and .htaccess code have both been removed. My site is mostly handwritten php and static HTML content. I don't use page comments or any third party libraries. THE PROBLEM After removing the compromised php and htaccess files, visitors are still being re-directed. What could be the reason that visitors are still being redirected? Are there any tools to check where/how redirects are taking place so I can debug the problem? UPDATE - PROBLEM FIXED As suggested in the comments, I cleared my Firefox cache and that fixed the problem (for me anyway). Visitors with old cache data will obviously still be re-directed.

  • circumstances where software change leads to device damage

    - by nerorevenge
Recently I changed a friend's OS from a really virus filled windows 7 to Ubuntu ..but kept changing os's because lsusb wouldn't detect the camera. But after coming back to windows, the camera wasn't detected, though I must point out the device driver for the camera was never found. The Sony 'technician' told me that that since the dev-manager of windows 7 couldn't detect the camera , irregardless of whether the device driver was installed, the software change must have damaged the hardware. I was wondering if there is any truth to it.

  • Could this code damage my processor??!!

    - by Osama Gamal
A friend sent me that code and alleges that it could damage the processor. Is that true? void damage_processor() { while (true) { // Assembly code that sets the five control registers bits to ones which causes a bunch of exceptions in the system and then damages the processor Asm( "mov cr0, 0xffffffff \n\t" "mov cr1, 0xffffffff \n\t" "mov cr2, 0xffffffff \n\t" "mov cr3, 0xffffffff \n\t" "mov cr4, 0xffffffff \n\t" ) } } Is that true?

  • What damage is done by document.write()?

    - by Simon Gibbs
What bad things happen at the moment document.write() is invoked? I've heard bits and peices about document.write having an adverse impact on the DOM or on the use of Javascript libraries. I have an issue in front of me that I suspect is related, but have not been able to find a concise summary of what damage the method does.

  • Huge area of stuck pixels

    - by pixelady
A toddler slammed down my laptop screen while an iPod was laying on top of the keyboard. The damage resulted in a massive area of stuck pixels on the laptop screen, approximately 2 inches by 10 inches in area. I've tried running various programs that rapidly flick the pixels in different colors, as well as massaging the screen with heat and also without heat. These are the standard methods I read about for fixing a stuck pixel. But none of the online articles I read said how to fix a huge area of pixels, not just single pixels. What else can I try to get the many pixels unstuck? My computer is no longer under warranty and I don't want to buy a new one.

  • Spilled water on MS 4000 keyboard

    - by FreshCode
I spilled some water on the left side of my Microsoft 4000 Ergonomic Keyboard xausing several keys to malfunxtion. Most started working again after leaving the keyboard upside down in a warm-air clothes dryer for an hour. I presume there is some lingering moisture whixh is xausing the keypress errors. Should i be worried about permanent damage and what xan I do to get the remaining keys baxk? Here is a list of broken/malfunxtioning keys, in xase it helps to pinpoint a solution: z, c (prints x), Right Shift, 7, 8, 9, 0 Delete, Page Up, Num-4, Num-5, Num-6, Num-(, Num-), Num-=

  • Moving an external hard drive while running

    - by user1108939
I mean physically moving the drive around. I've never dealt with external hard drives before. Just plugged this wd mypassport to test the transfer rate. At one point I 'safely ejected' the drive. A minute later I decide to check the underside of the drive, not realizing the disk is still spinning. I lift the drive, rotating my writs about 70 degrees to the left... I hear a sequence of three high pitched sounds. I couldn't determine whether that was an indication beep by an internal security feature or the head scratching the plate (oh god...). Drive stops and usb power is disconnected. I reconnect it - it shows up fine - reads/writes. The drive was not reading/writing when i moved it. Did I damage my drive? Are these things that fragile? I thought them to be at least as durable as a standard 2.5" internal drive. Am I mistaken?

  • Is it safe to just yank an external hard drive if you know nothing is writing to it?

    - by Nathaniel
Yes, I know somewhat about the possibility of data corruption if there was data that hadn't been all written to it. But I just saw this: Note:If u remove HDD(not USB sticks) without safely removing it,its not healthy and will affect life. So, if nothing is actually writing to it, could there actually be any harm caused by not safely removing or unmounting it before disconnecting it?

  • How does one get rid of fishy behavior in Windows?

    - by Tom Wijsman
After I had boot my computer this morning there suddenly flooded water from the top of the screen, after which some fishes dropped into it. Now I can barely see what I am doing because the water distorts the view. Sometimes the fish follow the cursor so I need to move it away or wait for the fish to mind their own business. This makes it very annoying to use my system. What have I tried? Reboot the system. This caused the water to deplete from the desktop. Upon reboot, the screen was refilled with water and fishes. Attach another monitor. Same problem, fills that monitor as well and gives me extra fish. Clicking the fish. Makes them turn direction. Right clicking the fish. Changes color of the fish, not really useful. I'm locked out of changing the background or screen saver settings. Hence, I had to post the lady below... Safe mode doesn't save me from the fishes. It does give me another background there, but I can't screenshot easily. Other user accounts experience this as well. The Guest account seems to experience more fish than the other accounts. Using HijackThis, OTL Timekeeper List, Syninternal Autoruns, RootKitRevealer, ShellExView and similar tools I can't seem to find any entries that could be it, the Sysinternals tools show everything as verified. I'm suspecting this to be a driver problem. Randomly removing drivers doesn't seem to alleviate the problem. When removing the Graphics Drivers, it makes my screen black. While that could be considered the solution, it's not what I want. Changing the time / date settings does also not seem to affect the fishes. Changing the time a few years in the future, I would have expected the fishes to be dead. But, the same fishes are still there... They simply won't die! Tried to get used to them. They are really bothering me, looks like they require food. I don't know how to give them food, but apparently they get it elsewhere during reboot... Tried to disable my mouse pointer and use the keyboard. This works, they now swim around more randomly. They do put their attention to huge changes on the screen, so I need to type slow. Or otherwise I can't see what I'm tying exactly. Hold my laptop upside down. This seems to affect the water and fishes, but the water stays in the screen. They seem super resistant against water sickness and confusion though... What does the problem look like? What do I need? A way to get rid of these fishes on my screen forever, they are really annoying me a lot and I'm about to crack the screen to see if that makes them escape. Do you have any idea why this problem is occurring? What are my considerations? Buying an USB fish tank could make the fish leave the screen, I am uncertain though whether the fish could leave the screen through the USB cable. Using the FISh (programming language) which seems to provide EXPRESSIVE POWER and EFFICIENT EXECUTION, I can however not find any examples on how to remove fish. What are my Specifications? I'm using a Sony Vaio Fishy laptop. Sony VAIO VGN-Fishy, VAIO. Processor: 1337 MHz, Intel Core 2 Duo, T5432, 1 MB, Intel PM965 Express, 667 MHz. • Cannot enter BIOS due to broken screen

    - by gamer
Lately my laptop(hp g42 247sb) screen is damaged, so I hook it up with a external monitor(LG something) and it works fine now. But the only annoying thing is I cannot navigate the BIOS menu for some tweaking because the BIOS not shown on the external monitor, instead, it only shown on the broken laptop screen, and it only output to my external monitor when windwos/os is loged-on. So, is there anyway I can force output during BIOS/BOOT/POST to my external monitor? Things I have done and didn't work: (1)Set my LG monitor as primary display on both window properties and Intel Graphics panel (2)Enter the bios (F10 key) and press the fn+F4 key(change display output). (3)Disable and uninstall my internal screen(broken laptop screen) using device manager and restart, but windows(bios?) install it back on log-on. Please help me!

  • USB drive errors after airport scan

    - by bobobobo
Well, I just got a new PNY usb drive and it passed through an airport scanner yesterday. For some reason, I wrote to it and then tried to read from it today, and it gave me a corrupted error! chkdsk reports errors like: Bad links in lost chain at cluster 1179 corrected. Lost chain cross-linked at cluster 1200. Orphan truncated. Lost chain cross-linked at cluster 1228. Orphan truncated. Lost chain cross-linked at cluster 1236. Orphan truncated. Lost chain cross-linked at cluster 1237. Orphan truncated. Lost chain cross-linked at cluster 1244. Orphan truncated. Lost chain cross-linked at cluster 1250. Orphan truncated. Lost chain cross-linked at cluster 1266. Orphan truncated. Lost chain cross-linked at cluster 1278. Orphan truncated. etc. What is this from? Could it possibly be from the airport scanner, or is it likely a defective USB chip? How can I check the chip to see if I should just return/throw it away or continue to use it?

  • Microsoft Natural Keyboard 4000, more problematic keys?

    - by Saebin
So my new motherboard doesn't have a ps/2 connector, so I bought a Microsoft natural keyboard 4000 to replace my old natural keyboard. But, some of the keys stopped working, so I bought another 4000... which then had different keys stop working. I tried cleaning them out, but no go. My guess is some condensation or something fell on it and shorted it out... but if it is that easy to short out, I can't imagine how my old keyboard lasted for years. Did I just get unlucky or are newer keyboards more vulnerable? Any recommendations?

  • Windows shell damaged? Basic tabs and buttons layout with Aero enabled

    - by Dragiša
I would need little help from you. This is first time I see something like this happen to shell in Windows 7, as you can see, tabs and buttons in some programs, or control panel (see screenshot) are like those in basic Windows theme. Of course, there is selected 'Adjust for best appearance' in System Properties, so it's not making a problem, also Aero theme is enabled, which is obvious. What could be solution for this?

  • What is the way to submit a patch to fix all the damage that LP: #600941 causes?

    - by nutznboltz
What is the best way to submit a patch to fix all the damage that LP: #600941 causes? I ask because LP: #600941 was put into every version of Ubuntu still supported at this time. Should I pick a particular version and run ubuntu-bug on it? Should that version be the LTS or Oneiric or Precise (how can I get Precise if I need it?) The story is that after it was pushed out all of our systems started experiencing Nagios nrpe restart failures. Commands like /etc/init.d/nagios-nrpe-server restart would cause nrpe to stop but not restart. I tracked this down to the way that the /etc/init.d/nagios-nrpe-server script is calling start-stop-daemon. The issue is that the "stop" stanza in the /etc/init.d/nagios-nrpe-server script first calls start-stop-daemon which sends SIGTERM to nrpe and then waits only for one second. If nrpe has not exited by that time the pid file will still exist and the /etc/init.d/nagios-nrpe-server script will remove it. Worse if /etc/init.d/nagios-nrpe-server restart is used not only will the pid file be removed, the attempt to restart nrpe will fail provided that the nrpe daemon is still tardy in shutting down. The attempt to start under those circumstances will fail because nrpe will still be bound to a socket and the second attempt at binding will cause the nrpe startup to abort. They should have wondered why there was a comment about "sometimes the pid file does not get removed". They should have tested on systems that have a heavy load and therefore slow nrpe response times. The fix is to add --retry 10 or such to the invocation of start-stop-daemon ... --stop ... Thanks

  • C#: Delegate syntax?

    - by Rosarch
I'm developing a game. I want to have game entities each have their own Damage() function. When called, they will calculate how much damage they want to do: public class CombatantGameModel : GameObjectModel { public int Health { get; set; } /// <summary> /// If the attack hits, how much damage does it do? /// </summary> /// <param name="randomSample">A random value from [0 .. 1]. Use to introduce randomness in the attack's damage.</param> /// <returns>The amount of damage the attack does</returns> public delegate int Damage(float randomSample); public CombatantGameModel(GameObjectController controller) : base(controller) {} } public class CombatantGameObject : GameObjectController { private new readonly CombatantGameModel model; public new virtual CombatantGameModel Model { get { return model; } } public CombatantGameObject() { model = new CombatantGameModel(this); } } However, when I try to call that method, I get a compiler error: /// <summary> /// Calculates the results of an attack, and directly updates the GameObjects involved. /// </summary> /// <param name="attacker">The aggressor GameObject</param> /// <param name="victim">The GameObject under assault</param> public void ComputeAttackUpdate(CombatantGameObject attacker, CombatantGameObject victim) { if (worldQuery.IsColliding(attacker, victim, false)) { victim.Model.Health -= attacker.Model.Damage((float) rand.NextDouble()); // error here Debug.WriteLine(String.Format("{0} hits {1} for {2} damage", attacker, victim, attackTraits.Damage)); } } The error is: 'Damage': cannot reference a type through an expression; try 'HWAlphaRelease.GameObject.CombatantGameModel.Damage' instead What am I doing wrong?

  • DOT implementation

    - by Denis Ermolin
I have some DOT(damage over time) implementation problems. My game runs on 30 FPS speed. Current implementation is: let's say hero cast spell which make 1 damage per second. So on every frame i do (pseudo code): damage_done = getRandomDamage() * delta_time; I accumulate damage and when it becomes more then 0 then subtract rounded damage from current health and so on. With 30 FPS and 1 DPS it will be 1/33 = 0.05... We know that floats a not precise enough to sum 30 circulating decimals and have exact 1 in the end. But HP is discrete value and that's why 1 DPS will not have 1 damage after 1 second because value will be 0.9999..... It's not so big deal when you have 100000 DPS - +/- 1 damage will not be noticeable. But if i have 1, 5 DPS? How modern RPG's implemented DOT's?

  • Can Current Backflow from Powered Hub's Adapter & cause PC Damage?

    - by SuperUserMan
Getting this short: Can current flow from a powered USB hub's power adapter (lying 10 Meter away) back to computer via usb port and cause damage to Computer components like mobo, etc? What should be my concerns? Using a 2 Amp 5V Power adapter to power a 10m Long Active Repeater USB extension cable with 4 port HUB & plugging into PC's Front port, causes PC Chassis fan to keep running (thought slower than regular speed) Front Chassis HDD & power LED to turn on (though bit dim) may be other things which i cant detect/see at chip level, in motherboard?? All this even after PC is shut down (bit scary) More detail (in case still want to read): To run 4 High power (needing 450 mAmps) Wifi Adapters, far away from PC, Bought Active Repeater USB Extension Cable with 4 Ports & power port at far end http://www.ebay.com/itm/33FT-USB-2-0-Male-to-Female-Extension-Cable-Hub-Splitter-Adapter-with-4-USB-Port-/390846115254 Then added a locally bought 2 Amp 240V AC to 5V DC Power Adapter and plugged into USB hub which is a part of & situated at far end of a 10 Meter Active Repeater usb extension cable. Even 4 Wifi Adapters run fine (appear to) using this setup, but running chassis fan, dimly lighted Power & HDD LED, even when PC is switched off is bit scary and surely mean 5V & some current is flowing all though that 10 meter extension cable into my USB port & powering stuff. Can this cause damage? and what should be my concerns. Of course I can't switch off the power adapter (lying 10 meters away from PC) every time I switch off my PC to prevent this.

  • PHP Battle System for RPG game

    - by Jay
I posted this a while ago on stackoverflow, they thought it would be better place here, I agree. Essentially I know what I want to accomplish, and I have something to the effect of what I want but I am not satisfied with it. Here's the problem. Each user has some states: STR (how hard they hit), DEF (dodging/blocking attacks), SPD (when they can strike), and STAMINA (basically their endurance in game, if this runs out they can no longer fight and lose) What I need is something like this: UserA Stats: STR: 1,000 DEF: 2500 SPD: 2000 (HP: 1000/1000) UserB Stats: STR: 1,500 DEF: 500 SPD: 4000 (HP: 1000/1000) Because the second user has double the speed, he lands twice the amount of hits on the first user, before he gets hit. Because he has less strength than the first users defence, he will do no, to little damage. This is how the battle would theoretically go: UserB strikes UserA for 0 damage UserB strikes UserA for 0 damage UserA strikes UserB for 500 damage UserB strikes UserA for 0 damage UserB strikes UserA for 0 damage UserA strikes UserB for 500 damage, and sends him to the hospital! I was using this code, which is buggy, and not efficient, I just need a better way to do this: http://pastebin.com/15LiQQuJ Oh, and if anyone has some good ideas on how to improve the concept that would be cool too! It's not that elaborate so I'll be thinking of all sorts of things to make it more dynamic. Thanks.

  • Could a too low voltage during long periods damage my computer fan?

    - by Sopalajo de Arrierez
Computer fans use to run at 12Volt, but most as for today they allow 9Volt or even less to slow down the fan speed (RPM, Revolutions Per Minute). In cases of too low voltage, the fan stops, but I can see it "trying to start again". For example: my Tacens 9dB fan stops at about 10 Volts, but to start it again, 10.5Volt is not enough, and the engine tries to move the fan (I can see a small movement as an "attempt" to move) each 1-5 seconds, but it does not succees, so the fan keeps at 0 RPM. Maybe that "attempt" to move could damage the internal engine of the fan when it last for hours or days?
