• Errors trying to run MongoDB

  I'm running Ubuntu Server 12.04 (32 bit) on an old (1998) computer. Everything's working fine until I try and start MongoDB. somekittens@DLserver01:~$ mongo MongoDB shell version: 2.2.2 connecting to: test Sun Dec 16 22:47:50 Error: couldn't connect to server 127.0.0.1:27017 src/mongo/shell/mongo.js:91 exception: connect failed Googling the error lead me to all sorts of "repair" options, none of which fixed anything. I've also removed MongoDB and installed it again (using apt-get, have not built from source). • Dell Optiplex 980 vs. Dell Studio XPS 9000?

  My company is allowing me to upgrade to either the XPS 9000 or the Optiplex 980. I haven't bought an Optiplex in over a decade, and the only thing I can remember is that the Optiplex is really meant for corporate IT environments, and we're not even close being large enough to have IT issues. I think the components might be of higher quality as well, like the motherboard and power supply. The XPS 9000 is about $150 cheaper than the Optiplex, but the Optiplex has 4GB more RAM, a 2nd video card, and an extra year of service. Seems like the Optiplex is a better deal overall, but since I haven't ever used one, I wanted to see what everyone else here thought.

• Confused about C++'s std::wstring, UTF-16, UTF-8 and displaying strings in a windows GUI

  I'm working on a english only C++ program for Windows where we were told "always use std::wstring", but it seems like nobody on the team really has much of an understanding beyond that. I already read the question titled "std::wstring VS std::string. It was very helpful, but I still don't quite understand how to apply all of that information to my problem. The program I'm working on displays data in a Windows GUI. That data is persisted as XML. We often transform that XML using XSLT into HTML or XSL:FO for reporting purposes. My feeling based on what I have read is that the HTML should be encoded as UTF-8. I know very little about GUI development, but the little bit I have read indicates that the GUI stuff is all based on UTF-16 encoded strings. I'm trying to understand where this leaves me. Say we decide that all of our persisted data should be UTF-8 encoded XML. Does this mean that in order to display persisted data in a UI component, I should really be performing some sort of explicit UTF-8 to UTF-16 transcoding process? I suspect my explanation could use clarification, so I'll try to provide that if you have any questions.

• Cannot launch 16-bit application anymore

  I'm trying to debug and resolve some issues with a Win32 macro application written C++ however I'm having the strangest issue. I have to launch a 16-bit program and then simulate entering data into and have been using ShellExecute for over two years now. I haven't touched this actual code at all, but now it doesn't work. I'm doing ShellExecute(NULL, "open", exe_path.c_str(), NULL, "", SW_SHOWDEFAULT);. This has worked flawlessly for years but all of sudden, it stopped working. It gives me an ACCESS_DENIED error code. I've Googled and apparently this is a pretty common issue with launching 16-bit apps. The workstation XP SP2 environment hasn't changed at all, and it was actually working until I rebuilt a little while ago (I've rebuilt it before many times). The code is inside a window procedure function and when I take it out and launch the program in the WinMain function it works, but the code has to be in the window procedure... I've tried numerous alternatives but they all give the same issue. The biggest issue with this is it was working then all of a sudden decided it wasn't going to with no change to both code and environment! In fact, it was about half way through testing changes that it thought it'd stop working. Please help as I cannot do anything without the program launching. It's the first step in the code that I'm debugging!

• Should UTF-16 be considered harmful?

  I'm going to ask what is probably quite a controversial question: "Should one of the most popular encodings, UTF-16, be considered harmful?" Why do I ask this question? How many programmers are aware of the fact that UTF-16 is actually a variable length encoding? By this I mean that there are code points that, represented as surrogate pairs, take more than one element. I know; lots of applications, frameworks and APIs use UTF-16, such as Java's String, C#'s String, Win32 APIs, Qt GUI libraries, the ICU Unicode library, etc. However, with all of that, there are lots of basic bugs in the processing of characters out of BMP (characters that should be encoded using two UTF-16 elements). For example, try to edit one of these characters: 𝄞 (U+1D11E) MUSICAL SYMBOL G CLEF 𝕥 (U+1D565) MATHEMATICAL DOUBLE-STRUCK SMALL T 𝟶 (U+1D7F6) MATHEMATICAL MONOSPACE DIGIT ZERO 𠂊 (U+2008A) Han Character You may miss some, depending on what fonts you have installed. These characters are all outside of the BMP (Basic Multilingual Plane). If you cannot see these characters, you can also try looking at them in the Unicode Character reference. For example, try to create file names in Windows that include these characters; try to delete these characters with a "backspace" to see how they behave in different applications that use UTF-16. I did some tests and the results are quite bad: Opera has problem with editing them (delete required 2 presses on backspace) Notepad can't deal with them correctly (delete required 2 presses on backspace) File names editing in Window dialogs in broken (delete required 2 presses on backspace) All QT3 applications can't deal with them - show two empty squares instead of one symbol. Python encodes such characters incorrectly when used directly u'X'!=unicode('X','utf-16') on some platforms when X in character outside of BMP. Python 2.5 unicodedata fails to get properties on such characters when python compiled with UTF-16 Unicode strings. StackOverflow seems to remove these characters from the text if edited directly in as Unicode characters (these characters are shown using HTML Unicode escapes). WinForms TextBox may generate invalid string when limited with MaxLength. It seems that such bugs are extremely easy to find in many applications that use UTF-16. So... Do you think that UTF-16 should be considered harmful?

  Just wanted to know if both of these are fully compatible with Ubuntu?   Before I make my 16-bits game, I want to clear some stuff up so I dont run into problems later. first question: when making a 16-bits game all i need to do is have 16-bit sprites image(.png or .jpg)? and for 8-bits it is .gif 2nd question is: which tile size is good for 16-bits or it doesnt matter? Right now I am using 30x30 pixels for map tile set. and 40x40 pixels for player, enemies etc.. 3rd question is: what is screen size for 16-bits in most games? I am using 640x480 pixels.

• Battery issues on Dell Inspiron XPS14z Ultrabook

  I'm new in the Ubuntu world. I just bought a Dell Inspiron XPS 14z Ultrabook and installed Ubuntu to dual boot with Windows thanks to the Ubuntu Secured Remix package. Everything works fine except the battery. I have, at most, 1h 30' battery life. With windows it can last more than 3h. Moreover, and I guess it's related to the battery issues, the fan is constantly running at high speed while it does not when working with windows. Do you know where can be the problem?

  After upgrading my vostro 3360 on Ubuntu 12.04, I saw that drivers were not available for this version (notably for network). So I decided to install 11.10 but the mic still doesn't work (notably on Skype, Gtalk etc.) I join the model of the audio device and the drivers which were installed before I upgraded to ubuntu 12.04 (I succeeded only in installing the network one) Can you help me to find the solution to this problem with my microphone? • Dell R510 vs R710

  Hello, the Dell R510 and R710 can both hold regular configurations (e.g. X5650, 24 GB RAM, etc.) and these usually come out to about the same price. Is there a particular reason why one would choose the R510 over the R710 or vice versa? There really appears a lack of differentiating factors. The only 'major' factor I found, which doesn't apply to me though, is that the R510 can hold up to 12 3.5in HDDs while the R710 (which is slightly more expensive) can only hold up to 6 3.5in HDDs. Maybe you guys have some input and bought either of these machines (or both) to shed some light on other differences and why someone should choose one over the other as the pricing is pretty much the same with my configuration. • TFS 2008 Web Access Report 100 record limitation

  By default TFS 2008 Web Access has the limit of 100 record when you open any query in report mode. Even if you tried to export the query to excel or PDF you will only get first 100 record exported. To overcome this issue, you have to reconfigure this count in the web.config file Navigate to web access files C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 Team System Web Access\Wiwa Open web.config modify maxWorkitemsInReportList count to whatever count you need.   My netbook cannot access the wifi network, and I cannot enable it. This is the second time this has happenned. The first time, it came back after a lot of restarts and BIOS factory resets. Ubuntu sometimes simply won't connect to any wifi networks, and other times it will say that the wireless is blocked by a hardware switch. • Is there any reason to prefer UTF-16 over UTF-8?

  Examining the attributes of UTF-16 and UTF-8, I can't find any reason to prefer UTF-16. However, checking out Java and C#, it looks like strings and chars there default to UTF-16. I was thinking that it might be for historic reasons, or perhaps for performance reasons, but couldn't find any information. Anyone knows why these languages chose UTF-16? And is there any valid reason for me to do that as well?
