• Helper method to Replace/Remove characters that do not match the Regular Expression

- by Michael Freidgeim
I have a few fields, that use regEx for validation. In case if provided field has unaccepted characters, I don't want to reject the whole field, as most of validators do, but just remove invalid characters. I am expecting to keep only Character Classes for allowed characters and created a helper method to strip unaccepted characters. The allowed pattern should be in Regex format, expect them wrapped in square brackets. function will insert a tilde after opening squere bracket , according to http://stackoverflow.com/questions/4460290/replace-chars-if-not-match. [^ ] at the start of a character class negates it - it matches characters not in the class.I anticipate that it could work not for all RegEx describing valid characters sets,but it works for relatively simple sets, that we are using. ///
/// Replaces not expected characters. ///
/// The text. /// The allowed pattern in Regex format, expect them wrapped in brackets /// The replacement. /// <returns></returns> /// // http://stackoverflow.com/questions/4460290/replace-chars-if-not-match. //http://stackoverflow.com/questions/6154426/replace-remove-characters-that-do-not-match-the-regular-expression-net //[^ ] at the start of a character class negates it - it matches characters not in the class. //Replace/Remove characters that do not match the Regular Expression static public string ReplaceNotExpectedCharacters( this string text, string allowedPattern,string replacement ) { allowedPattern = allowedPattern.StripBrackets( "[", "]" ); //[^ ] at the start of a character class negates it - it matches characters not in the class. var result = Regex .Replace(text, @"[^" + allowedPattern + "]", replacement); return result; }static public string RemoveNonAlphanumericCharacters( this string text) { var result = text.ReplaceNotExpectedCharacters(NonAlphaNumericCharacters, "" ); return result; } public const string NonAlphaNumericCharacters = "[a-zA-Z0-9]";There are a couple of functions from my StringHelper class http://geekswithblogs.net/mnf/archive/2006/07/13/84942.aspx , that are used here. // ///
/// 'StripBrackets checks that starts from sStart and ends with sEnd (case sensitive). /// 'If yes, than removes sStart and sEnd. /// 'Otherwise returns full string unchanges /// 'See also MidBetween ///
///                ///                ///                /// <returns></returns>               public static string StripBrackets( this string str, string sStart, string sEnd)              {                      if (CheckBrackets(str, sStart, sEnd))                     {                           str = str.Substring(sStart.Length, (str.Length - sStart.Length) - sEnd.Length);                     }                      return str;              }               public static bool CheckBrackets( string str, string sStart, string sEnd)              {                      bool flag1 = (str != null ) && (str.StartsWith(sStart) && str.EndsWith(sEnd));                      return flag1;              }               public static string WrapBrackets( string str, string sStartBracket, string sEndBracket)              {                      StringBuilder builder1 = new StringBuilder(sStartBracket);                     builder1.Append(str);                     builder1.Append(sEndBracket);                      return builder1.ToString();              }v

• Escape characters in MySQL, in Ruby

- by Swards
I have a couple escaped characters in user-entered fields that I can't figure out. I know they are the "smart" single and double quotes, but I don't know how to search for them in mysql. The characters in ruby, when output from Ruby look like \222, \223, \224 etc irb> "\222".length => 1 So - do you know how to search for these in mysql? When I look in mysql, they look like '?'. I'd like to find all records that have this character in the text field. I tried mysql> select id from table where field LIKE '%\222%' but that did not work. Some more information - after doing a mysqldump, this is how one of the characters is represented - '\\xE2\\x80\\x99'. It's the smart single quote. Ultimately, I'm building an RTF file and the characters are coming out completely wrong, so I'm trying to replace them with 'dumb' quotes for now. I was able to do a gsub(/\222\, "'"). Thanks.

• Escape Quote in C# for javascript consumption

- by Jason
I have a ASP.Net web handler that returns results of a query in JSON format public static String dt2JSON(DataTable dt) { String s = "{\"rows\":["; if (dt.Rows.Count > 0) { foreach (DataRow dr in dt.Rows) { s += "{"; for (int i = 0; i < dr.Table.Columns.Count; i++) { s += "\"" + dr.Table.Columns[i].ToString() + "\":\"" + dr[i].ToString() + "\","; } s = s.Remove(s.Length - 1, 1); s += "},"; } s = s.Remove(s.Length - 1, 1); } s += "]}"; return s; } The problem is that sometimes the data returned has quotes in it and I would need to javascript-escape these so that it can be properly created into a js object. I need a way to find quotes in my data (quotes aren't there every time) and place a "/" character in front of them. Example response text (wrong): {"rows":[{"id":"ABC123","length":"5""}, {"id":"DEF456","length":"1.35""}, {"id":"HIJ789","length":"36.25""}]} I would need to escape the " so my response should be: {"rows":[{"id":"ABC123","length":"5\""}, {"id":"DEF456","length":"1.35\""}, {"id":"HIJ789","length":"36.25\""}]} Also, I'm pretty new to C# (coding in general really) so if something else in my code looks silly let me know.

• c# winforms events restore textbox contents on escape

- by aj3jr
Using c# in 2008 Express. I have a textbox containing a path. I append a "\" at the end on Leave Event. If the user presses 'Escape' key I want the old contents to be restored. When I type over all the text and press 'Escape' I hear a thump and the old text isn't restored. Here what I have so far ... public string _path; public string _oldPath; this.txtPath.KeyPress += new System.Windows.Forms.KeyPressEventHandler(txtPath_CheckKeys); this.txtPath.Enter +=new EventHandler(txtPath_Enter); this.txtPath.LostFocus += new EventHandler(txtPath_LostFocus); public void txtPath_CheckKeys(object sender, KeyPressEventArgs kpe) { if (kpe.KeyChar == (char)27) { _path = _oldPath; } } public void txtPath_Enter(object sender, EventArgs e) { //AppendSlash(sender, e); _oldPath = _path; } void txtPath_LostFocus(object sender, EventArgs e) { //throw new NotImplementedException(); AppendSlash(sender, e); } public void AppendSlash(object sender, EventArgs e) { //add a slash to the end of the txtPath string on ANY change except a restore this.txtPath.Text += @"\"; } Thanks in advance,

• Unescape _xHHHH_ XML escape sequences using Python

- by John Machin
I'm using Python 2.x [not negotiable] to read XML documents [created by others] that allow the content of many elements to contain characters that are not valid XML characters by escaping them using the _xHHHH_ convention e.g. ASCII BEL aka U+0007 is represented by the 7-character sequence u"_x0007_". Neither the functionality that allows representation of any old character in the document nor the manner of escaping is negotiable. I'm parsing the documents using cElementTree or lxml [semi-negotiable]. Here is my best attempt at unescapeing the parser output as efficiently as possible: import re def unescape(s, subber=re.compile(r'_x[0-9A-Fa-f]{4,4}_').sub, repl=lambda mobj: unichr(int(mobj.group(0)[2:6], 16)), ): if "_" in s: return subber(repl, s) return s The above is biassed by observing a very low frequency of "_" in typical text and a better-than-doubling of speed by avoiding the regex apparatus where possible. The question: Any better ideas out there?

• How to convert Windows filenames (from a checksums.md5) to *nix notation so I can use it on my shell with md5sum?

- by Somebody still uses you MS-DOS
I have some checksums.md5 verification files from an ntfs external drive, but using windows notation: \ instead of /, spaces between file names (not escaped), reserved shell characters (like (, &, ', to name a few). The checksums.md5 has a bunch of checksums and filenames: ;Created by program ;2010 f12f75c1f2d1a658dc32ca6ef9ef3ffc *My Windows & Files (2010)\[bak]\testing.wmv 53445e1a0821b790872e60bd7a166887 *My Windows Files' 2 (2012)\[bak]\testing.wmv 53445e1a0821b790872e60bd7a166887 *My Windows Files ˜nicóde (2012)\[bak]\testing.wmv ;Finished I want to use this checksums.md5 to verify the files that I've copied to my machine: but I'm on a Linux, so I need to convert the names inside checksums.md5 from Windows to Linux to use the md5sum utility from the shell. The first line in my example would become: f12f75c1f2d1a658dc32ca6ef9ef3ffc My\ Windows\ \&\ Files\ \(2010\)/\[bak\]/testing.wmv Is there some application for this (converting a file listing, from windows cmd notation, to linux shell notation) or will I need to create a bash script using sed that just "replaces" what is "wrong" with the filenames?

• Trouble with backslash characters and rsyslog writing to postgres

- by Flimzy
I have rsyslog 4.6.4 configured to write mail logs to a PostgreSQL database. It all works fine, until the log message contains a backslash, as in this example: Jun 12 11:37:46 dc5 postfix/smtp[26475]: Vk0nYDKdH3sI: to=<[email protected], relay=----.---[---.---.---.---]:25, delay=1.5, delays=0.77/0.07/0.3/0.35, dsn=4.3.0, status=deferred (host ----.---[199.85.216.241] said: 451 4.3.0 Error writing to file d:\pmta\spool\B\00000414, status = ERROR_DISK_FULL in "DATA" (in reply to end of DATA command)) The above is the log entry, as written to /var/log/mail.log. It is correct. The trouble is that the backslash characters in the file name are interpreted as escapes when sent to the following SQL recipe: $template dcdb, "SELECT rsyslog_insert(('%timereported:::date-rfc3339%'::TIMESTAMPTZ)::TIMESTAMP,'%msg:::escape-cc%'::TEXT,'%syslogtag%'::VARCHAR)",STDSQL :syslogtag, startswith, "postfix" :ompgsql:/var/run/postgresql,dc,root,;dcdb As a result, the rsyslog_insert() stored procedure gets the following value for as msg: Vk0nYDKdH3sI: to=<[email protected], relay=----.---[---.---.---.---]:25, delay=1.5, delays=0.77/0.07/0.3/0.35, dsn=4.3.0, status=deferred (host ----.---[199.85.216.241] said: 451 4.3.0 Error writing to file d:pmtaspoolB The \p, \s, \B and \0 in the file name are interpreted by PostgreSQL as literal p, s, and B followed by a NULL character, thus early-terminating the string. This behavior can be easiily confirmed with: dc=# SELECT 'd:\pmta\spool\B\00000414'; ?column? -------------- d:pmtaspoolB (1 row) dc=# Is there a way to correct this problem? Is there a way I'm not finding in the rsyslog docs to turn \ into \\?

• Interpretation of Greek characters by FOP

- by Geek
Hi, Can you please help me interpret the Greek Characters with HTML display as HTML= & #8062; and Hex value 01F7E Details of these characters can be found on the below URL http://www.isthisthingon.org/unicode/index.php?page=01&subpage=F&hilite=01F7E When I run this character in Apache FOP, they give me an ArrayIndexOut of Bounds Exception Caused by: java.lang.ArrayIndexOutOfBoundsException: -1 at org.apache.fop.text.linebreak.LineBreakUtils.getLineBreakPairProperty(LineBreakUtils.java:668) at org.apache.fop.text.linebreak.LineBreakStatus.nextChar(LineBreakStatus.java:117) When I looked into the FOP Code, I was unable to understand the need for lineBreakProperties[][] Array in LineBreakUtils.java. I also noticed that FOP fails for all the Greek characters mentioned on the above page which are non-displayable with the similar error. What are these special characters ? Why is their no display for these characters are these Line Breaks or TAB’s ? Has anyone solved a similar issue with FOP ?

In my bash script I have an external (received from user) string, which I should use in sed pattern. • how escape quotes when inserting into database in PHP

- by Mauro74
Hi all, I'm quite new to PHP so sorry if sounds such an easy problem... :) I'm having an error message when inserting content which contains quotes into my db. here's what I tried trying to escape the quotes but didn't work: $con = mysql_connect("localhost","xxxx","xxxxx"); if (!$con) { die('Could not connect: ' . mysql_error()); } mysql_select_db("test", $con); $nowdate = date('d-m-Y') $title = sprintf($_POST[title], mysql_real_escape_string($_POST[title])); $body = sprintf($_POST[body], mysql_real_escape_string($_POST[body])); $sql="INSERT INTO articles (title, body, date) VALUES ('$title','$body','$nowdate'),"; if (!mysql_query($sql,$con)) { die('Error: ' . mysql_error()); } header('Location: index.php'); Could you provide any solution please? Thanks in advance. Mauro

• Insert Special Characters & Coding in Online Forms in Firefox

- by Asian Angel
If you are active in forums or comment areas on different websites then you most likely use some type of special characters, HTML, or other code throughout the day. Now you can easily insert commonly used “items” with the SKeys extension for Firefox. Your New Special Text Edit Bar After installing the extension you will see the new toolbar that has been added to your browser. These are the kinds of text that can be added to online comment areas, forums, or other website areas that allow their use: Special characters HTML tags BB codes Wiki characters All that you will need to do is click on the appropriate special character or code to insert it into the website text area. The first two toolbar items are each singular in their function and insert the following types of text. A look at the special characters available for your use. The wiki code menu. The HTML menu… And the BB code menu. Here is a quick sample using the HTML menu…much better than doing it manually. This should definitely help speed things up throughout the day. Our only disappointment during testing was not being able to add additional items (i.e. characters, tags) to the toolbar at this time. Conclusion While a new toolbar may not be for everyone this extension can certainly prove useful when you need to quickly add special characters or coding in website text areas. • How to escape the character entities in XML?

- by Chetan Vaity
I want to pass XML as a string in an XML attribute. <activity evt="<FHS> <act> <polyline penWidth="2" points="256,435 257,432 "/> </act> </FHS> /> Here the "evt" attribute is the XML string, so escaping all the less-than, greater-than, etc characters by the appropriate character entities works fine. The problem is I want a fragment to be interpreted as is - the character entities themselves should be treated as simple strings. When the "evt" attribute is read and an XML is generated from it, it should look like <FHS> <act> <polyline penWidth="2" points="256,435 257,432 "/> </act> </FHS> Essentially, I want to escape the character entities. How is this possible?

• Kanji characters appear as boxes

- by s3d10s
i'm having trouble with the display of japanese characters on Windows 8 Pro (English, 64-bit, updated regularly). They appear as boxes (picture) in windows explorer, windows menus (even in the language settings of control panel), iTunes and nearly everywhere else, besides web browsers. I was using windows 7 until now, and it didn't have any of these problems, and i'm using the same applications now, as i was using in windows 7. Sometimes (!) when i restart the machine the problem goes away, but that isn't a real solution. What i've tried so far: added japanese language to windows of course installed/uninstalled/reinstalled japanase language pack (didn't have any impact though) i've read in one of these superuser topics a possible solution, when i had to create a txt file on the desktop with a kanji in the filename - that also didn't work (but i honestly hope that hacking and tweaking an operation system released in 2012 can't be the solution to display kanjis..) Please give me any ideas, i'm a bit hopeless here, and don't want to spend my life installing operation systems..

• Windows 7 Home Premium - Unable to View Chinese Characters Properly

- by David
Is there a proper and permanent fix that will restore the display of Chinese Characters on a Windows 7 Home Premium Laptop computer? This problem has been occurring frequently now and a simple reboot no longer does the trick. The square boxes viewed on many applications and websites has been constantly bothering me and I wish to fix it asap. I have done a lot of research on it but have not been successful. Many responses were to install the language packs for Windows 7 Ultimate Users which apparently is not my case or to configure the "Region and Language" settings of the Control Panel, changing the system locale. Does anyone have any suggestions? All would be appreciated!

How can I: a) Identify which lines in the file contains null characters? I have tried grepping for \0 and \x0, but this did not work. b) Remove the null characters? Running strings on the file cleaned it up, but I'm just wondering if this is the best way? Thanks
