• Q&A: Will my favourite ORM Foo work with SQL Azure?

- by Eric Nelson
short answer: Quite probably, as SQL Azure is very similar to SQL Server longer answer: Object Relational Mappers (ORMs) that work with SQL Server are likely but not guaranteed to work with SQL Azure. The differences between the RDBMS versions are small – but may cause problems, for example in tools used to create the mapping between objects and tables or in generated SQL from the ORM which expects “certain things” :-) More specifically: ADO.NET Entity Framework / LINQ to Entities can be used with SQL Azure, but the Visual Studio designer does not currently work. You will need to point the designer at a version of your database running of SQL Server to create the mapping, then change the connection details to run against SQL Azure. LINQ to SQL has similar issues to ADO.NET Entity Framework above NHibernate can be used against SQL Azure DevExpress XPO supports SQL Azure from version 9.3 DataObjects.Net supports SQL Azure Open Access from Telerik works “seamlessly” - their words not mine :-) The list above is by no means comprehensive – please leave a comment with details of other ORMs that work (or do not work) with SQL Azure. • What's your favourite programming language, and its killer feature?

- by eplawless
Each language I've used has had its pros and cons, but some features have really shone through as being indispensible, shining examples of how to design a programming language to make programmers happy. I use PHP a lot at work, and the one thing I really miss when moving to other languages is PHP's foreach: foreach($items as $item) //iterate through items by value foreach($items as &$item) //iterate through items by reference foreach($items as $i => $item) //by value, with indices foreach($items as $i => &$item) //by reference, with indices In C#, I'm kind of smitten with the built-in multicast delegate system, as well as the way it handles getters and setters. So what's your favourite/favorite language, and what feature makes it awesome?

• How do I "telnet into [my] favourite Web server"?

- by rookie
I'm reading a book about programming, and I want to check an HTTP response message. The book is instructing me to telnet into your favorite Web server. Then type in a one-line request message for some object that is housed on the server: for example: telnet cis.poly.edu 80 GET /~hello/ HTTP/1.1 Host: cis.poly.edu What am I supposed to do, exactly? What program do I need? Where do I need to type this message?

• What are your favourite less well known keyboard shortcuts in Windows?

- by Richard Szalay
The title says it all. Here are a few of my favourites to get things started: WINDOWS + BREAK - System Properties CTRL + SHIFT + ESC - Task Manager SHIFT + F10 - Context Menu (on keyboards without a CM key) And general text selection: HOME/END - Go to the start/end of the current line CTRL + HOME/END - Go to the start/end of the document CTRL + LEFT/RIGHT - Skip entire words SHIFT + CTRL + LEFT/RIGHT - Select entire words Edit: Just remembered this one SHIFT + DEL - Delete file (skip recycle bin)

• How best to implement "favourites" feature? (like favourite products on a data driven website)

- by ClarkeyBoy
Hi, I have written a dynamic database driven, object oriented website with an administration frontend etc etc. I would like to add a feature where customers can save items as "favourites", without having to create an account and login, to come back to them later, but I dont know how exactly to go about doing this... I see three options: Log favourites based on IP address and then change these to be logged against an account if the customer then creates an account; Force customers to create an account to be able to use this functionality; Log favourites based on IP address but give users the option to save their favourites under a name they specify. The problem with option 1 is that I dont know much about IP addresses - my Dad thinks they are unique, but I know people have had problems with systems like this. The problem with 1 and 2 is that accounts have not been opened up to customers yet - only administrators can log in at the moment. It should be easy to alter this (no more than a morning or afternoons work) but I would also have to implement usergroups too. The problem with option 3 is that if user A saves a favourites list called "My Favourites", and then user B tries to save a list under this name and it is refused, user B will then be able to access the list saved by user A because they now know it already exists. A solution to this is to password protect lists, but to go to all this effort I may as well implement option 2. Of course I could always use option 4; use an alternative if anyone can suggest a better solution than any of the above options. So has anyone ever done something like this before? If so how did you go about it? What do you recommend (or not recommend)? Many thanks in advance, Regards, Richard

• Returning a list from a function in Python

- by Jasper
Hi, I'm creating a game for my sister, and I want a function to return a list variable, so I can pass it to another variable. The relevant code is as follows: def startNewGame(): while 1: #Introduction: print print """Hello, You will now be guided through the setup process. There are 7 steps to this. You can cancel setup at any time by typing 'cancelSetup' Thankyou""" #Step 1 (Name): print print """Step 1 of 7: Type in a name for your PotatoHead: """ inputPHName = raw_input('|Enter Name:|') if inputPHName == 'cancelSetup': sys.exit() #Step 2 (Gender): print print """Step 2 of 7: Choose the gender of your PotatoHead: input either 'm' or 'f' """ inputPHGender = raw_input('|Enter Gender:|') if inputPHGender == 'cancelSetup': sys.exit() #Step 3 (Colour): print print """Step 3 of 7: Choose the colour your PotatoHead will be: Only Red, Blue, Green and Yellow are currently supported """ inputPHColour = raw_input('|Enter Colour:|') if inputPHColour == 'cancelSetup': sys.exit() #Step 4 (Favourite Thing): print print """Step 4 of 7: Type your PotatoHead's favourite thing: """ inputPHFavThing = raw_input('|Enter Favourite Thing:|') if inputPHFavThing == 'cancelSetup': sys.exit() # Step 5 (First Toy): print print """Step 5 of 7: Choose a first toy for your PotatoHead: """ inputPHFirstToy = raw_input('|Enter First Toy:|') if inputPHFirstToy == 'cancelSetup': sys.exit() #Step 6 (Check stats): while 1: print print """Step 6 of 7: Check the following details to make sure that they are correct: """ print print """Name:\t\t\t""" + inputPHName + """ Gender:\t\t\t""" + inputPHGender + """ Colour:\t\t\t""" + inputPHColour + """ Favourite Thing:\t""" + inputPHFavThing + """ First Toy:\t\t""" + inputPHFirstToy + """ """ print print "Enter 'y' or 'n'" inputMCheckStats = raw_input('|Is this information correct?|') if inputMCheckStats == 'cancelSetup': sys.exit() elif inputMCheckStats == 'y': break elif inputMCheckStats == 'n': print "Re-enter info: ..." print break else: "The value you entered was incorrect, please re-enter your choice" if inputMCheckStats == 'y': break #Step 7 (Define variables for the creation of the PotatoHead): MFCreatePH = [] print print """Step 7 of 7: Your PotatoHead will now be created... • How to save/retrieve words to/from SQlite database?

- by user998032
Sorry if I repeat my question but I have still had no clues of what to do and how to deal with the question. My app is a dictionary. I assume that users will need to add words that they want to memorise to a Favourite list. Thus, I created a Favorite button that works on two phases: short-click to save the currently-view word into the Favourite list; and long-click to view the Favourite list so that users can click on any words to look them up again. I go for using a SQlite database to store the favourite words but I wonder how I can do this task. Specifically, my questions are: Should I use the current dictionary SQLite database or create a new SQLite database to favorite words? In each case, what codes do I have to write to cope with the mentioned task? Could anyone there kindly help? Here is the dictionary code: package mydict.app; import java.util.ArrayList; import android.database.Cursor; import android.database.sqlite.SQLiteDatabase; import android.database.sqlite.SQLiteException; import android.util.Log; public class DictionaryEngine { static final private String SQL_TAG = "[MyAppName - DictionaryEngine]"; private SQLiteDatabase mDB = null; private String mDBName; private String mDBPath; //private String mDBExtension; public ArrayList<String> lstCurrentWord = null; public ArrayList<String> lstCurrentContent = null; //public ArrayAdapter<String> adapter = null; public DictionaryEngine() { lstCurrentContent = new ArrayList<String>(); lstCurrentWord = new ArrayList<String>(); } public DictionaryEngine(String basePath, String dbName, String dbExtension) { //mDBExtension = getResources().getString(R.string.dbExtension); //mDBExtension = dbExtension; lstCurrentContent = new ArrayList<String>(); lstCurrentWord = new ArrayList<String>(); this.setDatabaseFile(basePath, dbName, dbExtension); } public boolean setDatabaseFile(String basePath, String dbName, String dbExtension) { if (mDB != null) { if (mDB.isOpen() == true) // Database is already opened { if (basePath.equals(mDBPath) && dbName.equals(mDBName)) // the opened database has the same name and path -> do nothing { Log.i(SQL_TAG, "Database is already opened!"); return true; } else { mDB.close(); } } } String fullDbPath=""; try { fullDbPath = basePath + dbName + "/" + dbName + dbExtension; mDB = SQLiteDatabase.openDatabase(fullDbPath, null, SQLiteDatabase.OPEN_READWRITE|SQLiteDatabase.NO_LOCALIZED_COLLATORS); } catch (SQLiteException ex) { ex.printStackTrace(); Log.i(SQL_TAG, "There is no valid dictionary database " + dbName +" at path " + basePath); return false; } if (mDB == null) { return false; } this.mDBName = dbName; this.mDBPath = basePath; Log.i(SQL_TAG,"Database " + dbName + " is opened!"); return true; } public void getWordList(String word) { String query; // encode input String wordEncode = Utility.encodeContent(word); if (word.equals("") || word == null) { query = "SELECT id,word FROM " + mDBName + " LIMIT 0,15" ; } else { query = "SELECT id,word FROM " + mDBName + " WHERE word >= '"+wordEncode+"' LIMIT 0,15"; } //Log.i(SQL_TAG, "query = " + query); Cursor result = mDB.rawQuery(query,null); int indexWordColumn = result.getColumnIndex("Word"); int indexContentColumn = result.getColumnIndex("Content"); if (result != null) { int countRow=result.getCount(); Log.i(SQL_TAG, "countRow = " + countRow); lstCurrentWord.clear(); lstCurrentContent.clear(); if (countRow >= 1) { result.moveToFirst(); String strWord = Utility.decodeContent(result.getString(indexWordColumn)); String strContent = Utility.decodeContent(result.getString(indexContentColumn)); lstCurrentWord.add(0,strWord); lstCurrentContent.add(0,strContent); int i = 0; while (result.moveToNext()) { strWord = Utility.decodeContent(result.getString(indexWordColumn)); strContent = Utility.decodeContent(result.getString(indexContentColumn)); lstCurrentWord.add(i,strWord); lstCurrentContent.add(i,strContent); i++; } } result.close(); } } public Cursor getCursorWordList(String word) { String query; // encode input String wordEncode = Utility.encodeContent(word); if (word.equals("") || word == null) { query = "SELECT id,word FROM " + mDBName + " LIMIT 0,15" ; } else { query = "SELECT id,content,word FROM " + mDBName + " WHERE word >= '"+wordEncode+"' LIMIT 0,15"; } //Log.i(SQL_TAG, "query = " + query); Cursor result = mDB.rawQuery(query,null); return result; } public Cursor getCursorContentFromId(int wordId) { String query; // encode input if (wordId <= 0) { return null; } else { query = "SELECT id,content,word FROM " + mDBName + " WHERE Id = " + wordId ; } //Log.i(SQL_TAG, "query = " + query); Cursor result = mDB.rawQuery(query,null); return result; } public Cursor getCursorContentFromWord(String word) { String query; // encode input if (word == null || word.equals("")) { return null; } else { query = "SELECT id,content,word FROM " + mDBName + " WHERE word = '" + word + "' LIMIT 0,1"; } //Log.i(SQL_TAG, "query = " + query); Cursor result = mDB.rawQuery(query,null); return result; } public void closeDatabase() { mDB.close(); } public boolean isOpen() { return mDB.isOpen(); } public boolean isReadOnly() { return mDB.isReadOnly(); } } And here is the code below the Favourite button to save to and load the Favourite list: btnAddFavourite = (ImageButton) findViewById(R.id.btnAddFavourite); btnAddFavourite.setOnClickListener(new View.OnClickListener() { @Override public void onClick(View v) { // Add code here to save the favourite, e.g. in the db. Toast toast = Toast.makeText(ContentView.this, R.string.messageWordAddedToFarvourite, Toast.LENGTH_SHORT); toast.show(); } }); btnAddFavourite.setOnLongClickListener(new View.OnLongClickListener() { @Override public boolean onLongClick(View v) { // Open the favourite Activity, which in turn will fetch the saved favourites, to show them. • How do I disable DirectDraw and Direct3D acceleration on Windows 8? [closed]

- by Favourite Chigozie Onwuemene
Some old games that i would really like to play run slowly on some graphic drivers when direct3d acceleration is enabled. I have tried many suggestions but none seems to work. The only thing i have not tried is disabling direct3d acceleration. Is it possible to disable DirectDraw and Direct3D acceleration on my Windows 8 pc? There are certain bad versions of GeForce drivers that cause this problem. This is a problem in the drivers themselves and is unfortunately completely outside our control. The recommended way to fix this problem is to update your graphics card drivers (go to NVIDIA's web site for this). Alternatively, there is a workaround that alleviates or solves the slowdown problem altogether. Try this: Right-click on your desktop and select "Properties". Go to the "Settings" tab and click on "Advanced...". Click on the "Troubleshooting" tab and move the slider to the left until it says that all DirectDraw and Direct3D accelerations have been disabled (around the middle of the range). Finally, click on "OK". Note that this workaround might cause other games on your computer to slow down, so you may have to switch back and forth between settings, but it's certainly worth a try if you can't obtain an updated graphics driver. -source: interactionstudios

• Sorting 1 million 8-digit numbers in 1MB of RAM

- by Favourite Chigozie Onwuemene
I have a computer with 1M of RAM and no other local storage. I must use it to accept 1 million 8-digit decimal numbers over a TCP connection, sort them, and then send the sorted list out over another TCP connection. The list of numbers may contain duplicates, which I must not discard. The code will be placed in ROM, so I need not subtract the size of my code from the 1M. I already have code to drive the ethernet port and handle TCP/IP connections, and it requires 2k for its state data, including a 1k buffer via which the code will read and write data. Is there a solution to this problem?

• How to design this simple database?

- by Vafello
I have 2 tables - one storing user information (id, username, password) and the second one storing information about events (id, name, description, date, username(represents the user who created the event)). I would like to implement 'favourite events' functionality. This would allow the user to store his favourite events and later display them in a list. I am not sure how to implement this in terms of design. I need a simple solution. Something like storing the IDs of favourite events in a field in the user table. I am using mysql and php. Can anyone point me to the right direction?

• When calling twitter api favorites, get favourite_count

- by mickyjtwin
Using the Twitter REST API Method: favorites for a user, this returns a list of statuses of each favourite. Is there a way to get the favourite count other than calling users/show, and accessing the property this way? Seems an ineffecient way of determining if there are more than 20 favourites for paging purposes.

• Solaris 11 Launch Blog Carnival Roundup

- by constant
Solaris 11 is here! And together with the official launch activities, a lot of Oracle and non-Oracle bloggers contributed helpful and informative blog articles to help your datacenter go to eleven. Here are some notable blog postings, sorted by category for your Solaris 11 blog-reading pleasure: Getting Started/Overview A lot of people speculated that the official launch of Solaris 11 would be on 11/11 (whatever way you want to turn it), but it actually happened two days earlier. Larry Wake himself offers 11 Reasons Why Oracle Solaris 11 11/11 Isn't Being Released on 11/11/11. Then, Larry goes on with a summary: Oracle Solaris 11: The First Cloud OS gives you a short and sweet rundown of what the major new features of Solaris 11 are. Jeff Victor has his own list of What's New in Oracle Solaris 11. A popular Solaris 11 meme is to write a blog post about 11 favourite features: Jim Laurent's 11 Reasons to Love Solaris 11, Darren Moffat's 11 Favourite Solaris 11 Features, Mike Gerdt's 11 of My Favourite Things! are just three examples of "11 Favourite Things..." type blog posts, I'm sure many more will follow... More official overview content for Solaris 11 is available from the Oracle Tech Network Solaris 11 Portal. Also, check out Rick Ramsey's blog post Solaris 11 Resources for System Administrators on the OTN Blog and his secret 5 Commands That Make Solaris Administration Easier post from the OTN Garage. (Automatic) Installation and the Image Packaging System (IPS) The brand new Image Packaging System (IPS) and the Automatic Installer (IPS), together with numerous other install/packaging/boot/patching features are among the most significant improvements in Solaris 11. But before installing, you may wonder whether Solaris 11 will support your particular set of hardware devices. Again, the OTN Garage comes to the rescue with Rick Ramsey's post How to Find Out Which Devices Are Supported By Solaris 11. Included is a useful guide to all the first steps to get your Solaris 11 system up and running. Tim Foster had a whole handful of blog posts lined up for the launch, teaching you everything you need to know about IPS but didn't dare to ask: The IPS System Repository, IPS Self-assembly - Part 1: Overlays and Part 2: Multiple Packages Delivering Configuration. Watch out for more IPS posts from Tim! If installing packages or upgrading your system from the net makes you uneasy, then you're not alone: Jim Laurent will tech you how Building a Solaris 11 Repository Without Network Connection will make your life easier. Many of you have already peeked into the future by installing Solaris 11 Express. If you're now wondering whether you can upgrade or whether a fresh install is necessary, then check out Alan Hargreaves's post Upgrading Solaris 11 Express b151a with support to Solaris 11. The trick is in upgrading your pkg(1M) first. Networking One of the first things to do after installing Solaris 11 (or any operating system for that matter), is to set it up for networking. Solaris 11 comes with the brand new "Network Auto-Magic" feature which can figure out everything by itself. For those cases where you want to exercise a little more control, Solaris 11 left a few people scratching their heads. Fortunately, Tschokko wrote up this cool blog post: Solaris 11 manual IPv4 & IPv6 configuration right after the launch ceremony. Thanks, Tschokko! And Milek points out a long awaited networking feature in Solaris 11 called Solaris 11 - hostmodel, which I know for a fact that many customers have looked forward to: How to "bind" a Solaris 11 system to a specific gateway for specific IP address it is using. Steffen Weiberle teaches us how to tune the Solaris 11 networking stack the proper way: ipadm(1M). No more fiddling with ndd(1M)! Check out his tutorial on Solaris 11 Network Tunables. And if you want to get even deeper into the networking stack, there's nothing better than DTrace. Alan Maguire teaches you in: DTracing TCP Congestion Control how to probe deeply into the Solaris 11 TCP/IP stack, the TCP congestion control part in particular. Don't miss his other DTrace and TCP related blog posts! DTrace And there we are: DTrace, the king of all observability tools. Long time DTrace veteran and co-author of The DTrace book*, Brendan Gregg blogged about Solaris 11 DTrace syscall provider changes. BTW, after you install Solaris 11, check out the DTrace toolkit which is installed by default in /usr/dtrace/DTT. It is chock full of handy DTrace scripts, many of which contributed by Brendan himself! Security Another big theme in Solaris 11, and one that is crucial for the success of any operating system in the Cloud is Security. Here are some notable posts in this category: Darren Moffat starts by showing us how to completely get rid of root: Completely Disabling Root Logins on Solaris 11. With no root user, there's one major entry point less to worry about. But that's only the start. In Immutable Zones on Encrypted ZFS, Darren shows us how to double the security of your services: First by locking them into the new Immutable Zones feature, then by encrypting their data using the new ZFS encryption feature. And if you're still missing sudo from your Linux days, Darren again has a solution: Password (PAM) caching for Solaris su - "a la sudo". If you're wondering how much compute power all this encryption will cost you, you're in luck: The Solaris X86 AESNI OpenSSL Engine will make sure you'll use your Intel's embedded crypto support to its fullest. And if you own a brand new SPARC T4 machine you're even luckier: It comes with its own SPARC T4 OpenSSL Engine. Dan Anderson's posts show how there really is now excuse not to encrypt any more... Developers Solaris 11 has a lot to offer to developers as well. Ali Bahrami has a series of blog posts that cover diverse developer topics: elffile: ELF Specific File Identification Utility, Using Stub Objects and The Stub Proto: Not Just For Stub Objects Anymore to name a few. BTW, if you're a developer and want to shape the future of Solaris 11, then Vijay Tatkar has a hint for you: Oracle (Sun Systems Group) is hiring! Desktop and Graphics Yes, Solaris 11 is a 100% server OS, but it can also offer a decent desktop environment, especially if you are a developer. Alan Coopersmith starts by discussing S11 X11: ye olde window system in today's new operating system, then Calum Benson shows us around What's new on the Solaris 11 Desktop. Even accessibility is a first-class citizen in the Solaris 11 user interface. Peter Korn celebrates: Accessible Oracle Solaris 11 - released! Performance Gone are the days of "Slowaris", when Solaris was among the few OSes that "did the right thing" while others cut corners just to win benchmarks. Today, Solaris continues doing the right thing, and it delivers the right performance at the same time. Need proof? Check out Brian's BestPerf blog with continuous updates from the benchmarking lab, including Recent Benchmarks Using Oracle Solaris 11! Send Me More Solaris 11 Launch Articles! These are just a few of the more interesting blog articles that came out around the Solaris 11 launch, I'm sure there are many more! Feel free to post a comment below if you find a particularly interesting blog post that hasn't been listed so far and share your enthusiasm for Solaris 11! *Affiliate link: Buy cool stuff and support this blog at no extra cost. • How do you keep down your urge to learn many things [closed]

- by devsundar
One of the difficulties i have is to lower my urge to learn new things (Languages, tools, frameworks etc.). I know it's good to stay the bleeding edge, but at the same time i want to learn things properly. I really see that i need to strike a balance between staying bleeding edge and knowing things properly. For example: Before choosing Arch (Desktop), Ubuntu(Server) and Knoppix(Portable) -- depending on situation -- as favourite distributions. Virtually i have tried all popular linux distributions. You name any popular linux (Redhat, Ubuntu, Arch, Suse, Knoppix, Slax, Slackware) i have tried it for some time. In fact i have spent few years experimenting the operating systems. Before choosing Python, Javascript (nodejs). I have tried all the languages i cameacross Scala, Haskell, Erlang, Ruby, Python, Perl, Scheme. Same applies for database. All popular db RDBMS (Oracle, Mysql, Postgres, SQLite[Favourite] etc) and NoSQL (Mongo, Couch, Neo4j etc.). Advantages i see: We get a overall picture of the technologies/tools/languages. It's useful to select the right tool for the job. We develop a taste and choose the One we like. Disadvantages: I feel that i spend somuch time and see a need to strike a balance. In summary, for e.g. If i see a blog post in HackerNews about CofeeScript i will try it out irrespective of what i am currently learning (Say Haskell). I switch back to learning Haskell, then again i see DART i check it out. And this continues.. Effectively i take more time to learn Haskell, but learnt about other new stuff on the way. The quetion i have is how do you strike a balance between staying bleeding edge and learning properly.
