• How do I add to a model when on the Show of another model?

  I on the Show of "Contacts" and want, from that page, to submit a Comment that is related to the Contact. The way I understand to do it would be: <%= start_form_tag :action => "add_comment", :id => @contact %> <% text_area "comment, "body", "rows" = > 5 %> <br> <%= submit_tag %> <%= end_form_tag %> I would create a method in the Contacts controller: def add_comment Contact.find(params[:id]).comments.create(params[:comment]) end However, I feel there's a better way, but don't know what that is? I learned this on a pretty outdated book. Basically, I want to add a new object belonging to a Model while on the Show of a different Model. Would formtastic help me, and if so, how?

• Creating a second form page for a has_many relationship

  I have an Organization model that has_many users through affiliations. And, in the form of the organization ( the standard edit ) I use semanting_form_for and semantic_fields_for to display the organization fields and affiliations fields. But I wish to create a separete form just to handle the affiliations of a specific organization. I was trying to go to the Organization controller and create a an edit_team and update_team methods then on the routes create those pages, but it's getting a mess and not working. am I on the right track?

• Routing is using ID has action and action has ID after submitting a form

  I have a model User that has_one user_profile and a User_Profile belongs_to user in the User controller I have: def personal @user = User.find_by_id(params[:id]) @user_profile = @user.user_profile @user_profile ||= @user.build_user_profile end def update_personal @user = User.find_by_id(params[:id]) if @user.user_profile.update_attributes(params[:user_profile]) flash[:notice] = "OK" redirect_to @user else flash[:notice] = "Fail" render :action => 'update_personal' end end In my personal.html.erb view I have: <% semantic_form_for @user_profile, :url => { :action => "update_personal"} do |form| %> <%= form.inputs %> <%= form.buttons %> <%end%> And on the rountes I have: map.resources :users, :member => { :personal => :get, :update_personal => :put } Now the strange thing is that I can do: users/1/personal to see the form but when I submit I get this error: Unknown action No action responded to 1. It's trying to find an action with the name 1. Can anyone point me out on the right direction?

But when I change the values and hit the submit button, the values are never changed. I can't figure out why...

• Rails plugin for generating dynamic / ajax crud interfaces compatible with Rails 3 beta?

  Anyone know of some good gems or plugins to create dynamic / ajax crud interfaces for Rails 3 projects? I know active scaffold was popular before and it's been awhile since I have used it / any other gems similar to this (I usually just write it myself). I like the direction that the formtastic gem (http://github.com/justinfrench/formtastic) is headed and wonder what else people are combining with it. Also I like the generators approach that Ryan Bates uses and he appears to be making updates for Rails 3. Anything else I am missing here? (I am also open to gems not compatible with Rails 3 too I guess, I can always make a contribution and try to help them get to the next phase. ;)) PS - Really stackoverflow, only one hyperlink?? lame.

Installing RDoc documentation for fastercsv-1.5.3... Another thing is that I really tried to figure this out. There's a bunch of people saying clean up local gems in your user account, always install with sudo, etc. But I've tried all that. • How can I get jQuery validation plugin Ketchup to stop an Ajax form submission when validation fails?

  I'm using Ruby on Rails, Formtastic gem, jQuery and ketchup to validate my form. I'm submitting the form created by Formtastic inside a modal box using ajax: <% semantic_form_remote_for @contact_form, :url => '/request/contact' do |f| %> I have a validation plugin verifying the fields on the form: $(document).ready(function() { $("#new_contact_form").ketchup(); }); The problem is that semantic_form_remote_for generates an onSubmit ajax request that the jQuery validation plugins won't prevent, since it's not a normal form submission. One question on stackoverflow suggests using :condition on the remote form declaration to fire a javascript function, but I can't do that since I'm not using a function, but rather relying on a jQuery handler. I also tried putting ketchup within a submit event handler: $(document).ready(function() { $("#new_contact_form").submit(function() { $('#new_contact_form').ketchup(); }); }); No luck. Form still submits. I also tried using the beforeSend option of jQuery.ajax: $(document).ready(function() { jQuery.ajax( { beforeSend: function(){ $('#new_contact_form').ketchup(); } }); }); Validation fires off, but form is still submitted. I switched to jQuery Validation plugin just to see if it was due to some limitation in Ketchup. It turns out that Validation has a submitHandler option: $(document).ready(function() { $('#new_contact_form').validate({ submitHandler: function(form) { jQuery.ajax({ data:jQuery.param(jQuery('#new_contact_form').serializeArray()), dataType:'script', type:'post', url:'/request/contact' }); return false; } }); }); This works when I use a regular semantic_form_for instead of semantic_form_remote_for, but alas, I would rather use Ketchup. Is Ketchup just woefully lacking? Am I forced to use jQuery Validation?

• Rails table inheritance issue

  I've setup some models in the table inheritance fashion and everything seems to be all fine and dandy. But, when I use a collection select field to select values from one of the models it saves it but it saves the ID of the data and not the actual value of the data. So when I try to display the value on the show view it just shows the corresponding ID and not the actual value. Here is my setup. I'm using formtastic as a side note. View <%= show_field "County", @company.county %> Form <%= f.input :county, :label => 'County', :as => :select, :collection => County.find(:all) %> Base Model class Tag < ActiveRecord::Base before_create :set_type before_update :set_type attr_accessible :type, :name, :category belongs_to :company def set_type self.type = self.category end end Inherited Model class County < Tag end

• Why is my html getting mal-formed?

  I have the following table in a form that's embedded in a formtastic form (semantic_form_for). Everything I ask to be generated by ruby shows up, but the table gets badly mangled (essentially, the tags NEVER get formed. The table headers get drawn correctly There are 14 available_date objects that get passed, and they alternate between having a time value of 1 or 2, so this is just terribly boggling, but probably simple to fix... <table class="availability_table"> <tr> <th>Date</th> <th>Early</th> <th>Late</th> </tr> <% f.fields_for :available_dates do |ad| %> <% if ad.object.time == 1 #if this is an early shift, then start the new row %> <tr><td><%= ad.object.date.strftime('%a, %b %d, %Y') %></td> <td><%= ad.collection_select(:availability , LookupAvailability.all.collect, :id, :name) %></td> <% else #otherwise end the row with just a box%> <td><%= ad.collection_select(:availability , LookupAvailability.all.collect, :id, :name) %></td></tr> <% end %> <% end %> </table> So like I said, the form functions properly, and the objects all get updated and displayed correctly and all that, it's just that the HTML isn't getting echo'd out properly so my table is all mangled. • How would I go about letting a user add and associate a comma separated list of categories while add

  I've been struggling for quite a while to get this feature working: I want my user to be able to select categories when uploading a photograph, but additionally be able to specify a comma-separated list of categories to create/find and associate with the photograph. I've had this working by using an attr_accessor :new_categories on the photographs model, but having that there without the column existing breaks both Paperclip and Exifr. Obviously, image upload and EXIF data retrieval are pretty important for a photography website, but not being able to add categories while uploading a photograph is a pain in the arse. Methods I've tried so far: Using attr_accessor to add a field for new_categories. Breaks gems. Using an Ajax sub-form to add categories. Formtastic can't handle it. Adding a column for new_categories to the photograph model. It works, but it's horrific. I haven't tried using a nested form, but I'd need to intercept it and stop it from processing it as normal. • Using Gem Dependencies if a server is 2.0 instead of 2.1

  At work for internal Rails applications, the server is running Rails 2.0.4 and Ruby 1.86. As far as I know, that's not going to change anytime soon and I have no control over it. I was going to try and test this out between a couple of computers and was curious if anyone knew what would happen. Being the server is on 2.0.4, I'd like to build Rails 2.3.5 applications for that server if at all possible. From what I understand so far, it won't be a problem if I freeze gems and upack dependancies. Does that sound right? Also, the internal work server has no gems beyond what Rails installs. What I'm wondering is, if I can successfully run a 2.3.5 application on the 2.0.4 server, can I also use extra gems and unpack those to use even though the server doesn't have them? I know that it was version 2.1 that introduced Gem Dependencies so would a 2.3.5 Rails app running on a 2.0.4 server be able to use required gems that are unpacked into an application? One of the worst things with this situation is even if the above stuff works, the server being on 1.86 would exclude me from using a lot of really cool gems that require Ruby 1.87 (like Formtastic). I assume it needs some sort of e.at_xpath() to find the div.control-group parent and add the .error class to it but I'm not sure how to do this. Can anyone help? PS This may all be possible using the formtastic or simple_form gems but I'd rather just use my own html if possible. EDIT If I put e['class'] = 'foo' in the if e.node_name.eql? 'label' section then it applies the class to the label so I think I just need to find the parent tag of e and then apply an .error class to it but I can't figure out what the xpath would be to get from label to its div.control-group parent; no combination of dots, slashes or whatever seems to work but xpath isn't my strong point.

• Please help to clean up my RoR development environment

  I started RoR development a few months ago, and being new to Mac... Time flies and now I have a lot different ruby versions, rails versions and gems versions located everywhere......And currently I installed rvm and things got even worst, all things messed! And so I started want to clean all things and use rvm again! I want to uninstall all gems, all rails, and all ruby versions, except the system's default one (the very old one born with the mac). Or any other better solutions or suggestions!?
