  Is there a way to do a inverse search? I have very big log file where a particular pattern fills up for few dozen pages 20100414 alpha beta 20100414 alpha beta <few dozen pages> 20100414 alpha beta 20100414 gamma delta 20100414 gamma delta <few dozen pages> 20100414 gamma delta Problem is, I don't know what text would be after "alpha beta". It could be "gamma delta" or something else. So I would like to skip all the lines that contain "alpha beta".

  Hi, I want to define an structure, where some math constants would be stored. Here what I've got now: struct consts { //salt density kg/m3 static const double gamma; }; const double consts::gamma = 2350; It works fine, but there would be more than 10 floating point constants, so I doesn't want to wrote 'static const' before each of them. And define something like that: static const struct consts { //salt density kg/m3 double gamma; }; const double consts::gamma = 2350; It look fine, but I got these errors: 1. member function redeclaration not allowed 2. a nonstatic data member may not be defined outside its class I wondering if there any C++ way to do it?

  I have a List of Dictionaries that have keys of type string and values that are ints. Many of the dictionaries have the same keys in them but not all of them. So my question is: using LINQ how would I find the maximum value associated with each distinct key across all of the dictionaries? So for example given the following input: var data = new List<Dictionary<string, int>> { new Dictionary<string, int> {{"alpha", 4}, {"gorilla", 2}, {"gamma", 3}}, new Dictionary<string, int> {{"alpha", 1}, {"beta", 3}, {"gamma", 1}}, new Dictionary<string, int> {{"monkey", 2}, {"beta", 2}, {"gamma", 2}}, }; I would like some kind of collection that contains: {"alpha", 4}, {"gorilla", 2}, {"gamma", 3}, {"beta", 3}, {"monkey", 2} (I'm currently looping through the list and keeping track of things myself, really just wondering if there is a nicer LINQ-esque way of doing it) EDIT: I also don't know what the string keys are in advance

  This is something new that I learned about the readonly keyword. Have a look at the following class: 1: public class MyClass 2: { 3: public string Name { get; set; } 4: public int Age { get; set; } 5:  6: private readonly double Delta; 7:  8: public MyClass() 9: { 10: Initializer(); 11: } 12:  13: public MyClass(string name = "", int age = 0) 14: { 15: Name = name; 16: Age = age; 17: Initializer(); 18: } 19:  20: private void Initializer() 21: { 22: Delta = 0.2; 23: } 24: } I have a couple of public properties and a private readonly member. There are two constructors – one that doesn’t take any parameters and the other takes two parameters to initialize the public properties. I’m also calling the Initializer method in both constructors to initialize the readonly member. Now when I build this, the code breaks and the Error window says: “A readonly field cannot be assigned to (except in a constructor or a variable initializer)” Two things after I read this message: It’s such a negative statement. I’d prefer something like: “A readonly field can be assigned to (or initialized) only in a constructor or through a variable initializer” But in my defense, I AM assigning it in a constructor (only indirectly). All I’m doing is creating a method that does it and calling it in a constructor. Turns out, .net was not ‘frameworked’ this way. We need to have the member initialized directly in the constructor. If you have multiple constructors, you can just use the ‘this’ keyword on all except the default constructors to call the default constructor. This default constructor can then initialize your readonly members. This will ensure you’re not repeating the code in multiple places. A snippet of what I’m talking can be seen below: 1: public class Person 2: { 3: public int UniqueNumber { get; set; } 4: public string Name { get; set; } 5: public int Age { get; set; } 6: public DateTime DateOfBirth { get; set; } 7: public string InvoiceNumber { get; set; } 8:  9: private readonly string Alpha; 10: private readonly int Beta; 11: private readonly double Delta; 12: private readonly double Gamma; 13:  14: public Person() 15: { 16: Alpha = "FDSA"; 17: Beta = 2; 18: Delta = 3.0; 19: Gamma = 0.0989; 20: } 21:  22: public Person(int uniqueNumber) : this() 23: { 24: UniqueNumber = uniqueNumber; 25: } 26: } See the syntax in line 22 and you’ll know what I’m talking about. So the default constructor gets called before the one in line 22. These are known as constructor initializers and they allow one constructor to call another. The other ‘myth’ I had about readonly members is that you can set it’s value only once. This was busted as well (I recall Adam and Jamie’s show). Say you’ve initialized the readonly member through a variable initializer. This is perfectly valid. There is a possibility that based on the way the object is instantiated, the readonly member will have a different value. • After upgrade from 10.10 to 11.04 Ubuntu doesn't load the splash screen anymore

  I have the problem that Ubuntu doesn't load the splash screen anymore (after upgrading from 10.10 to 11.04). After the Grub-bootloader, it takes a few seconds to load and then the monitor turns black. I already tried to boot from a Ubuntu Live CD, but the result was the same error. Furthermore I tried to start the protected mode, but it freezes just after showing me menu. Do you have any solutions for this? And is it possible to switch from Grub to the Ubuntu console?

  The last few months have been pretty crazy. Just before the MVP summit in February I was approached about changing to a different project with my (then current) employer, and right after the summit I was approached by another company. Eventually I went with the new company and a new role in the Information Assurance field. More to come on that as things progress. All that being said I've not been as active in the .NET community as I once was and I miss it - so I'm looking to dive back in especially as Windows Phone 7 draws nearer and nearer. Speaking of the community - many of you may not recognize me if you see me now :) I had told my son for the last couple years that I would cut my hair before he turned 5 (he always asked how come he didn't have long hair) and he turns 5 (time has flown!) on June 19th so May 30th I cut my long hair down pretty short and donated the hair to Locks of Love. As Chris said to me on Twitter, "pics or it didn't happen" - well fortunately my wife was there to document the whole thing so I'll get a picture or two posted here soon.

  Let's imagine we have an (x,y) plane where a robot can move. Now we define the middle of our world as the goal state, which means that we are going to give a reward of 100 to our robot once it reaches that state. Now, let's say that there are 4 states(which I will call A,B,C,D) that can lead to the goal state. The first time we are in A and go to the goal state, we will update our QValues table as following: Q(state = A, action = going to goal state) = 100 + 0 One of 2 things can happen. I can end the episode here, and start a different one where the robot has to find again the goal state, or I can continue exploring the world even after I found the goal state. If I try to do this, I see a problem though. If I am in the goal state and go back to state A, it's Qvalue will be the following: Q(state = goalState, action = going to A) = 0 + gamma * 100 Now, if I try to go again to the goal state from A: Q(state = A, action = going to goal state) = 100 + gamma * (gamma * 100) Which means that if I keep doing this, as 0 <= gamma <= 0, both qValues are going to rise forever. Is this the expected behavior of QLearning? Am I doing something wrong? If this is the expected behavior, can't this lead to problems? I know that probabilistically, all the 4 states(A,B,C and D), will grow at the same rate, but even so it kinda bugs me having them growing forever. The ideia of allowing the agent to continue exploring even after finding the goal has to do with that the nearer he is from the goal state, the more likely it is to being in states that can be updated at the moment.

  I'm just exploring ruby and was wondering about the theoretical possibility of adding a method to the class of an object. For example, define a method that takes in a parameter and would add a method to the class of that parameter (not just to the parameter object itself). Something like this example: class SomeClass end class AnotherClass end alpha = SomeClass.new beta = AnotherClass.new def AddHelloMethodTo param # This is where I'm trying to # add a method to the class of the parameter def param.class.Hello "Hello" end end AddHelloMethodTo alpha AddHelloMethodTo beta gamma = AnotherClass.new alpha.Hello beta.Hello gamma.Hello (Excuse me if I have syntax errors / typos I'm REALLY new to this!) Notice how I don't call the AddHelloMethodTo on gamma but I expect Hello to be defined because I added it to the class. Is this possible?

• R ggplot barplot; Fill based on two separate variables

  A picture says more than a thousand words. As you can see, my fill is based on the variable variable. Within each bar there is however multiple data entities (black borders) since the discrete variable complexity make them unique. What I am trying to find is something that makes each section of the bar more distinguishable than the current look. Preferable would be if it was something like shading. • xgamma -display parameter for dual monitor setup

  I want to change gamma for my first monitor. Every time I invoke xgamma with different -display parameters it somehow points to my second monitor. But I want to modify first one. I tried these commands. The parameters I have used for -display are :0, :0.0, :0.1, :1.0, :1.1, :1. Only the first 2 works. But it points to my second monitor. Not the first one. • Extending my desktop across two monitors with Nvidia Geforce 8800 GT

  When I played my old computer before I got this one, I was able to use the horizontal span. (Nvidia Geforce 6200 I believe) However, with this new computer, using vista and the 8800, the horizontal span option is gone, and all I have is dual veiw, which doesn't suit my needs. I play World of Warcraft on both my monitors, using CT_Viewport to keep my character and my veiwport on a single screen, while the majority of my addons lie on my other monitor. The problem with dual view is that the WoW will only stay on my primary monitor. Horizontal span would fix this easily, but there is no option for it. Any help regarding this?

• Run batch on files in a relative folder

  I have a windows batch script that runs a SOX command on various files, but I don't know how to get the batch to run on files in a relative path to that of the SOX executable. Currently all the files are in the root and it outputs to /combined. The Batch Script: cd %~dp0 mkdir combined FOR %%A IN (*.mp3) DO sox static.mp3 %%A "combined/%%~nxA" pause I want the script to run the sox command on files in the directory "audiotracks" and output it to the directory "combined". To give you an idea, this would be the desired folder structure: /root sox.exe batch.bat static.mp3 /audiotracks audio1.mp3 audio2.mp3 audio3.mp3 audio4.mp3 /combined audio1out.mp3 audio2out.mp3 audio3out.mp3 audio4out.mp3 Is this possible, or is there a better method of doing this? • Customising Google Maps breaks highway label blocks

  I'm trying to customise a Google map to use shades of a particular colour. It's working nicely except the blocks that contain major road names / numbers is illegible. I've figured out how to target styles to those elements, but setting the 'color' value sets both text and background to that colour.   I just installed Ubuntu on my laptop. The screen resolution is stuck in 1024x768. The screen is made for 1280x800. When I run xrandr I get: xrandr: Failed to get size of gamma for output default Screen 0: minimum 800 x 600, current 1024 x 768, maximum 1024 x 768 default connected 1024x768+0+0 0mm x 0mm 1024x768 61.0* 800x600 61.0 1280x800 isn't offered and I get gamma size error. I was going to look into the Xorg.conf file but I couldn't locate it. 1280x800 was displayed in Windows 7 and I think it is being displayed in Grub before Ubuntu starts also. Here are some details about my computer: CPU: Intel atom D2500 1.86GHz Chipset: Intel 945GSE+ICH7M LCD: 14" TFT 16:9 Resolution ratio: 1280*800 Video Card: Intel integrated GMA950 Does anyone know how to fix this?

  Our company has a very large public Java API which is currently being released standalone and online using (of course) JavaDoc. It is surrounded by product documentation which links into the API. We are moving our static documentation to DokuWiki - which works pretty good - and want to keep the links. Now it would be good to have a method (or doclet) that exports the JavaDoc directly into DokuWiki - or a very near alternative. Question: Is there something like this or do you know a method to do just that?

  We're developing an international product that displays a ruler to the user. Now in Germany and many other countries its of course common to use the metric system: cm or mm. I'm aware that americans and canadians (and maybe others too) do still use inches, feet and yards. So the question is: will todays americans (and other inch-country-citizens) understand the metric system and take it for granted - or do they still love their inches so much that they'd rather die than use a product with incorrect measurements? • xrandr fails when 3rd monitor has higher resolution

  I tried many combinations with xrandr command under lubuntu 12.04 to setup my three monitors DVI (DELL 1) left detected as HDMI1 HDMI (LG E2290) middle detected as HDMI2 VGA (DELL 2) right detected as VGA1 I can get the display with fix 1280x1024 on all the monitors. But once I setup 1280x1024 + 1920x1080 + 1280x1024, I get blank screen on all the monitors. Sometimes it throws crts fail error instead of blanking out. Anyone have similar issues? any solutions/workarounds? P.S. I can setup two monitors using 1280x1280 and 1920x1080 P.S.S. HDMI2 required at least 1920x1080 to display sharp picture.
